1 catalogue managed on 2 Computers, looking at their own drive of Original Photos.  Is this Possible? Thx

My LR4 catalogue is installed on my Desktop (Mac) with 11k Photos stored on an external drive (A) which is backed up hourly by time machine on a 2nd external drive (B). However I have now invested in a MacBook Pro to allow me to edit and keyword etc photos on the go.  The photos will always be imported to the Desktop External (A) and this computer would continue to be the master because of the time machine backups and option to make a second copy, however most of my photo editing and key wording would be done on the laptop.
After extensive research online I concluded that my best approach would be to have a single catalogue (LRCAT file) that is backed up to my dropbox account so that both computers access the same modifications file.  But how do I store the original photos?  My ideal would be to have a 3rd portable drive (C) for the macbook that has all the same photos on as the desktop external drive (A) and is synchronised with the desktop external (A) to reflect all of the deletions made while doing the library management on the MacBook.
In summary, 2 computers, each with it's own external drive of originals, kept in sync, and managed by the LRCAT file stored in dropbox. Is this possible?
To anticipate your question, I don’t want to have a shared folder of original photos because the huge external desktop drive would be impossible to take on the road for use with the laptop, and actually is incompatible with the laptop as it is Firewire 800.  And I don’t want to scrap it to make a portable drive the master external drive from performance, practicality and cost reasons.  Not to mention that (inspite of the best will in the world) it would almost permanently be connected to the laptop and therefore the time machine back ups running on the desktop would rarely get to back up my precious photos.  Having 2 identical drives of originals managed via to the workflow described above, would force hourly backups of all photos with Time Machine (since all new photos from the camera are imported to Desktop Drive (A)), and then necessity would require me to sync laptop drive (C) with (A) in order to be able to work on organising and editing the new images.
So…Can I have each computer looking to a different source of photos, if the photos are stored in the same hierarchy etc, but managed by 1 catalogue file?

THe long answer is no.

  • I just purchased two Macbook Air along with two Time Capsule (2TB) for my kids. Meanwhile I use a sagemcom ADLS modem/router for home use. Can I connect both Time Capsule and laptop which will allow both laptop to have their own backup system?

I want both of the computers to have their own independent time capsule.

want both of the computers to have their own independent time capsule.
I assume that you are asking about using the Time Capsules for Time Machine backups here, correct?
If yes, both MBAs will be able to select the specific Time Capsule that they will use for backups, so "point" MBA1 to Time Capsule 1 and MBA2 to Time Capsule 2.
Since you will have plenty of available backup space if you use two Time Capsules, you might want to consider having each MBA back up to both Time Capsule 1 and Time Capsule 2.
This way, if one Time Capsule fails, you will still have a complete set of backups for both MBAs.

  • I have two cell phone, different numbers.  Each has their own apple id.  How can i merge them so apps on one show on the other but keep their emails addresses separate on their own phone?

Have two cell phones, different numbers.  Each has their own apple id.  How can I merge them so apps purchased on one phone show on the other.  But.as each has their own email address, I want to keep these email addresses separate on their own phone?  Thanks.

We do this in my family now.  We have one account for purchases, so it is used to share music and apps (I think that is in Settings/iTunes & App Stores).  Each iDevice has this configured.
Then, each of us has our own iCloud account that is configured under Settings/iCloud.  That then allows us to have our own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/Reminders/Safari Bookmarks/Notes/Passbook/Photo Stream/Documents & Data/Find My iPhone/and Backup.  That Backup piece is pretty sweet and comes in handly if you replace your iDevice.  You can just restore from it.
So we all share the Apple Store account but we all have our own iCloud accounts to keep the rest seperate or things like you mentioned are a nightmare.
In answer to what iCloud does for you: http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/
Think of it as an internet based ("cloud") area for all of those items listed in my response.  What you need to remember is photo stream only maintans the last 1000 pictures so don't count it as a complete backup solution for your pictures.  Even though I rarely sync with a computer these days, I do still try to sync my phone with iPhoto (I have an iMac) so that I have copies of all of my pictures.  1000 may not stretch as far as it sounds.

  • Im having problems with my Kids facetime accounts that seem to be because they are both using my itunes and there are conflicts with multiple email addresses? Is it possible to now set the kids up with their own accounts without losing their apps etc

    Hi All,
I have my kids using iTunes via thier ipods etc through my own account and this hase been the case for some time?
This has started to cause issues lately with imessaging and facetime, as there seems to be a limit on email addresses that can be associated with one account?
I wonder if I would be best off setting the kids up with their own accounts, but want to be able to do this without them losing their existing apps, music etc?
Is this possible, if so is there a simple process cos I can seem to find anything relating to this?
    many thanks, Jim

Not going to happen the way you want it to.
When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

  • Is there a way to prevent an end-user from changing their own password?

All you guru's out there, I need your help. Is there a way to prevent an end-user from changing their own password? Is there a function or procedure I can create or what?

In this case, you do not want someone (whoever they are DBA etc) to connect as that
particuler user to change the password.Yes, but I wouldn't expect the users to[i] know that password. The connnect would be handled automatically, behind the scenes.
The clear implication of the OP's question and response was that users would not be allowed to change their own passwords. I'm guessing this is in response to a policy that says users mustn't have simple passwords like 123abc or mom. In such a scenario a better approach would be to apply regexp to a user's password to ensure it contains a mix of letters, numbers, punctuation, etc to achieve the desired level of complexity.
So questions, should not be regarded as daft Agreed, but the same is unfortunately not always true of business decisions. As the OP has told us not to ask we cannot know why they want to do this. Personally, I think a user's individual password should always be their responsibility; anything else strikes me as insecure. YMMV.

  • My children are currently sharing an account with my ex husband, how can create them their own account so they are not dependent on him, will they lose all their music they have bought on his account?

As far as I can tell, they don't have their own libraries or store accounts

Thank you this helps, also once they create their own id, will their purchased songs be theirs?
    Yes.
Can they share a library together somehow??
They can either share an Apple ID, or, if they create two seperate accounts, they can authorize the same computer with two different apple IDs so purchases across both accounts are accessible on the same machine.
An additional option for sharing an iTunes library across machines on the same network exists:

  • I look after multiple ipads each with their own itunes account. How can I manage them all from one computer.

I am looking after 20 ipads each with their own itunes account.  Am I able to have more than one itunes account on my computer so that I can sync these ipads when necessary.  We don't always buy our songs on itunes. Sometimes we buy the cds and download them onto itunes so i need to attach them to the computer to sync the songs.  I will need to do this all on my one computer.  Can this be done.  If not, what do you do in this instance.

Best way to do it is to create a user for each iTunes account.

  • Is it possible to manage 3-4 iPods from the same laptop?  Each iPod owner needs their own iTunes account, correct?

I've used an iPod for many years, and now that my kids are old enough to enjoy their own, with their own music, I want to to buy each one their own shuffle.  I just don't know if it's possible to manage all of these different music libraries from one computer.  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks, Jim

Entirely possible.  If you create a different Windows login for each user, then everyone will have a distinct library by default, located in:
    C:\Users\user1/Music\iTunes
    C:\Users\user2/Music\iTunes
    etc.
In this scenario it is a good idea to disable fast user switching in iTunes, so that you can't have multiple users logged in and running iTunes at the same time.  This is probably the best solution, especially as it provides the simplest upgrade path to the time when your children have their own computers.  The only real downside here is that it is a little more difficult (and not automatic) to share music between the libraries.
You can also have multiple iTunes libraries under a single Windows login, though this is a little more awkward to set up and use - everyone will need to hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes and select his/her library based on the location of the appropriate iTunes database file.
Last option would be to have one Windows login, one iTunes library, and just use different playlists associated with each user's iPod.

  • 2 computers, 5 family members with their own iTunes accounts. How do we share purchased iTunes and downloaded CDs with homeshare? (I can't get my old iPod music to all go onto my iPad)

    I have 2 computers - Windows Based
My husband, myself and the kids all have our own "accounts" on the home computer. This was done to limit certain access when the kids were younger.
The laptop is pretty much mine. I use both computers for my iTunes music.
Everyone has their own iTunes account for their music and games. I have been able to get music purchased by my other family members on my iPod in the past if I logged in the home computer under their IDs and attached my iPod. Or, if a family member downloaded a CD, I could get that music thes same way without having to download the CD again under my own login ID. However, I now have an iPad, and I can't transfer music from the iPod to the iPad - specifically that which was downloaded from CDs - not iTunes. And I couldn't get it to go from my iPod to my laptop, although both are authorized computers in the Home Sharing.
It doesn't seem like the Home Sharing works with the different computer login IDs. The iTunes is universally available regardless of who is logged in, but the libraries vary based on who's user name you are under. I have strugged with importing from one User ID to another, which led me to simply log in under a different family member to get the desired music. There has got to be an easier answer and I'm just not figuring it out.
I've read the support answers, I've read many of the other responses here as well to those with similiar questions, but I am still struggling.
    Any suggestions?

If you are completely confident that you didn't hide it, then you purchased those with different apple id. If you completely confident that you purchases with same apple id then you have hidden it. One of the other or you are speaking about a miracle. While miracles are possible they are not very likely. • How should I give itunes autonomy to my children now that they are in high school and have used my Mac and my itunes account to buy music for years, including all gift cards given to them. They now both have their own computers.

When my children were younger, and needed more help and oversight, I had them purchase songs with my permission, often with gift cards that they had been given on various occaisions. Now, however, they both have laptops, they would like to split out "their" music and books, sync their Itouches to their own system, and I would love to have 9000 less Taylor Swift songs stored on my hard drive. Also, it seems that I can't set up independent Itunes accounts for them without a credit card, however they both get gift cards several times a year. A suggestion for this? It must happen to a lot of families. Thanks.

Unfortunately you cannot split (nor merge) items purchased with an AppleID.  I am not clear on what you will have to do to allow them continued access to their music on your account.  Apple no longer has DRM protection in its music but then I also hear people have all kinds of authorization issues when trying to synch so it sounds like they still keep restrictions on what you can do with the music when trying to move it about.  I'll let somebody more experienced with syncing answer this part.  You may have to authorize their computers and devices to your AppleID to allow them all functionality with the music.
Ideally you would have set them up with their own AppleIDs years ago but...

I have 5 computers authorized to use my iTunes. 2 of those computers do not exist and  have had their hard drives destroyed. How do I remove those computer from my iTunes account?

Begin by opening the iTunes program and going to the iTunes Store via the iTunes Store button in the top right.
Once you're at the iTunes Store, click on the Sign In button at the top left corner (if you're not signed in) or on your account name in the same location (if you're already signed in).
This will bring you to your iTunes account. In the top box, you'll see a section labelled Computer Authorizations towards the bottom. Next to it is a button that reads Deauthorize All. Click it.
A window will pop up asking you to confirm that this is what you want to do. Continue.
In just a few seconds, all 5 computers on your account will be deauthorized.
Now, re-authorize just the computers that you still use and you'll be all set.

  • Allow user to manage their own schema with OEM

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out a way to allow a user to use only DML and DDL statements on their own schema. I would like for them to have the ability to use Oracle Enterprise Manager to manager their database objects. And by manage I mean only create/alter/drop tables, select/insert/update/delete from those tables and other typical application developer tasks. No DBA type stuff at all. What is the best way to allow them to connect to OEM while allowing them to only manage the objects in their schema? Thanks.

You'd need to write a php script or something to interface with applescript…

  • Has anyone managed to load a movie on their Moza

I've bought two of these things for the kids this Christmas, and I can load pictures, and music, but I can't seem to load any of my movies. Has anyone else While in the Central Software it shows the file transferring, it take a long time but finally gets to 00%. When I try to view it on the mp3 player it plays 5 seconds, and that's it. It obviously didn't transfer everything. It plays in Media Player as well. I tried to transfer it using media player too. It locks up and I have to end the program. I need a hammer.

Re: Has anyone managed to load a movie on their Mozaic i With a screen resolution of 28 x 60 you're going to be hard-pressed to get great quality from downscaling a full-size movie. That said, you dissatisfaction with the movies converted by this Daniusoft application may simply indicate the compression level was too aggressi've. That would appear as blocky or splotchy areas during playback or freeze frames. With any converter you need to balance between the quality setting and the final output file size.
If you search the forum you'll find mention of an application called BADAK http://www.robbiek.com/badak.htm. It is a free converter that is significantly faster than the once Creative bundles that has a preset option for the flash Zen. Those setting will probably work reasonably well for the Mosaic if you change the output resolution from 320x240 down to 60x28. However, I don't have a Mosaic so I'm speculating. Even so the presets may not be ideal for some source video being converted. Quality video transcoding is a "fiddle with it" process not a "one-button" process.
