10.3.9 and force quits

hi have some probs on the beige with 2 hard drives running 10.3.9 when i force quit an application why does it still show in the task bar and is there anything i can do to kill them? it does not work when i kill it but then when i do i get the spinning beach ball and then i have to do a reboot forced with apple control and power key?
any answers please
thanks
hugo

What you are describing is not the usual way Applications behave when you force quit. Mac OS X does not have a "task bar", that is a Windows term. I presume you mean it still has a triangle under its Icon in the Dock. That is not normal behaviour.
What Application is this? How much memory in your beige G3? How large are those drives and how much free space do they have?

iMovie won't respond.  I've restarted and "forced-quit" move, but not getting a response.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • How can I keep Firefox from saving my my last visited websites, even after I log out and Force Quit?

I quit and Force Quit Firefox when I log out of my MacBook Pro. Lately when I re-start Firefox, it has saved my last few visited websites and asks me if I'd like to restore these, or quit. How can I get Firefox to stop saving these sites and really quit?

hello, this is currently a problem in firefox when you first close all open firefox windows and then close the application afterwards - the bug should be addressed in a later version of firefox.
as a workaround in the meanwhile you could close firefox (through firefox > quit) while the browser window is still running or try this: enter about:config into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash'''. double-click it and change its value to '''false'''.

  • How can I shutdown my Mac since my Google Chrome is "open" and Force Quit is not working

Can someone help me shutdown my mac?
Problem: Google Chrome is not responding, and force quit from the dock, and using the apple icon seems to not work in quitting Google Chrome. Because of this, I cannot shutdown/restart my macbook pro.

    Try this:
    Command+Control+Option+Power button
If that does not work, as a last resort, hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the MacBook powers off. Wait 30 seconds before starting up again.

  • ICal 5 ... I quit and force quit and it will not stay closed!

I upgraded to the new OSX Lion ... since that time, iCal will not stay closed.  I quit and force quit, but a couple seconds later, it opens again and appears on my dock.
    Anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks

  • Programs freezing and Force Quit won't help.

I guess my problems started with the time freezing in the menu bar. Though that doesn't seem to be a problem now, it could just be because I have to keep restarting my computer.
    Here's the current problem:
Last Sunday programs would randomly freeze and the only way to get them going again would be to force power down the computer, which I have to do by shutting the power to the power strip that also powers my external HD. Why, you ask? Because if I do it just by holding the power button the external HD won't mount. Have to shut them both down.
As of Sunday I had all software up to date, but after coming to the boards and seeing others having problems after the last updates I decided to go back to a previous version.
After restoring from Time Machine to a date before the I updated to 10.5.2 I discovered my external drive had been corrupted.
I then had to start over and restore from the very first back up made in Dec. That worked and I got my computer back BUT then had to save what I could from the Time Machine back ups between then and now then erase the drive.
When I did I used the "zero out" option. Got that back up and running but I'm still having issues with not being abled to force quit and now think this week was a waste of time because the problem wasn't fixed with wiping both the internal and external HD's.
Obviously, while I know Macs better than Windows machines I don't know all the technical stuff that needs to be done with them.
So my current headache is that I'm trying to restore my iTunes library (should be noted I'm using an external HD to store everything due to the size of the library).
If I don't get to it fast enough to put in the next back up disc, iTunes will freeze.
If it freezes, I can try to force quit but all that does is close the window, not the program and gives me the option to report to Apple.
I then have to shut down the computer using the power strip as previously stated.
Once everything is back up, iTunes will sometimes freeze when I try to open it.
I'm also having trouble with Safari freezing on me sometimes. I don't know about any other programs because right now I'm mostly just focused on iTunes.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, whether it's hard ware or software related? Any solutions I might try?

Well this problem is also happening to me, and I'm using a Lacie Big Disk Extreme 500Gb, never had any problems before but after the update 10.5.2 problem reveals all the time. After disconnecting the disk the problem is solved, but this mustn't be normal.
Seems to be a bug in 10.5.2 as I can't imagine that Lacie disks and Maxtor disks won't be recognized anymore...
So to reply.. this case isn't solved yet..

  • Applications quitting unexpectedly and Force Quit doesn't work

    Hi there -
Hoping someone can help me out because this is driving me crazy! For the last week or so, probably 75% of the time that I save my work on word, excel or numbers the application stops responding. Force Quit either doesn't work or takes an extraordinarily long time to work and I end up restarting the computer. A few times during these episodes, Finder also stops responding, in which case I can't even restart appropriately. I'm wondering if an upgrade to 10.6 would fix this issue or if I should be doing something else instead to avoid total hard drive failure! Thanks for any help you can offer.

Ok, so day 2 of getting updated software (my office for mac was way out of date and so the mac genius proposed that i try that and see if it solved the issue) installed and then updated and i'm still having the same issues. Happened in Mail today for the first time - went to attach something and mail stopped responding, wouldn't force quit. Mac Genius also told me to try a different account on the computer to see if that account has problems, so I logged out of the account I normally use, and the computer wouldn't log out - just showed my desktop photo and no other options for the longest time. Eventually just shut down the machine, logged in as a different user and seems that everything works fine when I do this.
Thoughts on how to start fixing what seems to be communication (maybe indexing problems) on the account I normally use?
    Thanks!

  • My macbook pro early 2008 running 10.8.2 frozen in system preferences under desktop/screensaver after a hard reboot and force quit still frozen with spinning wheel - help

After selecting System Preferences and the selecting Desktop/Screensaver the laptop stays in a frozen state. It continually shows a spinning wheel and even after a Force Quit and also Holding Down the Power Button to shut laptop down anytime I go into Desktop/Screensaver it still shows a Spinning Wheel. What can I do to try to resolve this issue????? I'm thinking I will have to Re-Install Mountain Lion on my MBP. I just purchased this as a used system and also my 1st Mac coputer. It is most probably something I have done BUT now need to resolve this irritating issue since I can't change my desktop picture nor change my screensaver. Who knows what else may be going on.....
Please, someone give some constructive guidance...

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

  • Freezing and Force Quitting

I am currently having a massive problem with iTunes: at certain arbitrary times (entirely arbitrary, it has happened while opening and it has happened several hours later) iTunes will freeze (i.e. the spinning beachball of death). This would normally be nothing but a minor annoyance, however it is entirely impossible to force quit. If I click the force quit button angrily enough times it will close the iTunes window but iTunes itself will not close.
The kicker is that sometimes this will spread to other applications. I'll open up System Preferences with iTunes open and it will aquire the same problem.
Just to warn you: I have an MBox (and thus ProTools 7) on my computer (which I've heard can be an issue) but I've not had any problems with it (other than this, if the two are actually related). Finally, I do think it might related partly because this will also happen when I use Rosetta Stone (almost the only other program I use that uses audio).
Thanks for your time and any help you can give.

I'm having (almost) the same problem. Right out of the blue yesterday, the problem began. I start iTunes, it comes up ok, then about 5 seconds later, the "downloads" folder appears on the left hand side of the application, in the "STORE" subsection, and the spinning beachball appears. At that point, I can do nothing except force-quit. This happens regardless of whether or not my iPod is connected (I posted this question yesterday, but with no response, as of yet).
I downloaded 7.0.2 , and reinstalled it. again, and reinstalling. It appears that the reinstall went ok, but there's no change.
However, I do seem to see a pattern here, with more people having trouble with the latest version of iTunes; 7.0.2 Frankly, I don't know where to turn...Perhaps I can go to the Apple Store...

  • Can't Do Anything but Restart and Force Quit

Hello all, I'm here on account that my mother messed up her computer and I can't figure out what to do to help her.
She recently had fonts in conflict (extensis suitcase told her so) and so she went into the System Folder, deleted a few of the "problematic" fonts and then this happened....
Her menu bar at the top disappeared except for everything to the right past the volume icon. The rest of the desktop disappeared as well, except her wallpaper.
The only thing that can be done from this screen is open the force quit window, which contains a blinking finder icon and word.
I have tried opening the system preferences through short-cuts, but none of the short-cuts work.
When I attempt to work around that and click on the date on the menu bar (in the only part that shows), the entirety of the remaining menu bar disappears.
So... does anyone have any suggestions?! This is really important because she was working on some work-related files on there...

Hi Leah, and welcome to the forums!
I think she must've deleted some necessary System Fonts, you normally don't touch them.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1538
It appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Starred files and force quitting.

I've been having problems with Bridge when I star items and then quit and reopen and the stars have disappeared. Also Bridge keeps freezing and I have to force quit, around 5-6 times a day.

Try resetting the preferences by holding Shift + Ctrl + Alt while starting up Bridge. This will remove your favorites though and other customizings...

  • Itunes and Forcing Quit?

Hi, I just got my Macbook yesterday and am having a few problems. First, whenever I try to upload my music from my household computer (a Dell) from the itunes on that computer to the new Macbook, itunes will freeze (on my Macbook) and I will have to forcequit. Then, when I force quit, the itunes will just disappear from the screen but the little arrow under itunes at the bottom of the screen on the toolbar thing will still be there, so I know that it didn't actually quit. Then, when I go to the force quit menu again, Itunes is still there! It will never actually quit. Then my computer will never turn off and I will have to hold the power button until it turns off. What is going on?

    Hi krroell,
    Welcome to macbook forum.
    Try to repair permission:
Finder > application > utilities > disk utility > First aid tab > repair permission.
    Good Luck

  • OSX 10.5.2 is crashing often and force quitting is NOT an option.

Fellow Mac users... My computer is crashing often. I can't seem to figure out what is causing it. It's happens sometimes without me even doing anything.
What happens is my screen freezes. I've waited it out for hours before and nada! Force quitting isn't even an option (mouse won't work and neither does the keystroke). The only way out of it is holding the power button for 10 seconds to power down. I'm constantly checking the disk and repairing permissions etc... I've booted off the Leopard DVD and ran disk doctor.. No problems to be repaired.
30GB of hard drive space free...
What the heck is going on here? Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

You sure what you ran was Disk Doctor? If the software you ran was by Norton/Symantec, it is incompatible with any version of Mac OS X, and causes the very freezes you talk about.
If you ran Disk Utility and it found nothing wrong, it sounds like you ran into a data corruption, directory issue, disk too full (30 GB of free disk space is OK for 80 GB hard drives, but not for 200 GB or greater sized hard drives), bad permissions, or bad or incompatible hardware issue which needs to be isolated. Please tell us exactly what you ran? Is your data backed up? If you can access your data, and it isn't backed up, backup now*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
So we can troubleshoot your problem more in depth without the risks entailed with failing hard drives which can exhibit the same symptoms as some of the other issues we've mentioned.
    In summary please tell us:
    1. Is your data backed up?
    2. Did you run Disk Utility or Disk Doctor?
    3. How big is your hard drive?

  • Cant turn on computer since removing device by mistake and force quitting

I accidentally removed a hard drive attached through a usb without ejecting it. I then force quitted and when I turned the mac on I got a grey screen with a small folder symbol in the centre of the screen that alternated between the mac logo and a question mark. Does anyone know how I can get back to my desktop?

You did everything you could. Nothing will fix this other then a repair. something inside the ipad must of became disconnected. Find a company to do the repair.
