10.3.9 server with 10.4 clients

We are having a host of ongoing issues with OS X server version 10.4.3 on an XServe. We still have a backup drive with 10.3.9 loaded. Can server version 10.3.9 be used with clients running 10.4.3? If so, what issues are we to expect? We do not want to have to reformat all the clients until we resolve the other issues. Thanks for any responses.

We run Panther Server (10.3.9) with Tiger clients (10.4.3) just fine, except for random reboots every now and then because something makes the watchdog timer expire. But as long as that doesn't happen it runs fine.
Certain Tiger only features won't be supported by Panther Server, such as mobile home directories, Software Update Services, certain managed client features etc.
We decided to move back to 10.3.9 a while ago, after we had major lockup problems with 10.4.x (which seem to be pretty widespread considering the amount of posts dealing with similar issues), and are going to stick with it for a while.

    Current OS X doesn't provide Windows Workgroups and related authentication.   That's entirely different than having OS X Server set up to provide DNS services and DHCP.   Providing workgroups and particularly Active Directory authentication usually involve adding Samba or similar software onto OS X or OS X Server.
    As for the "home" domain, I'd expect to specify the DNS domain that was configured within OS X Server.   Loading random stuff in there might or might not work, as some clients might try or test or use that.  If you're not using the "short" host name specifications, you won't hit that path.   That specification is the default applied when you enter just the host name and not the domain name in an OS X or other DNS query.)  But if something does try that, it'll append "home" and will probably head into the weeds.  (If "home" is the made-up domain that you're using for local DNS, then that is a domain that is quite likely to become a real top-level domain.)

    Hello, we are running R/3 4.6C on Windows cluster system (node1-DB instance and node2-Central instance) and on Oracle 9i server. We also have several dialog instances running Oracle client 9i. Hardware and software (sap, oracle, windows) - everything is 32bit.
    We are replacing those several old application servers (=dialog instances) with new X86_64 hardware and Windows 64 bit + Oracle client 64 bit. The question is: is it possible (and also supported) to install Oracle client 10g 64bit on new application servers? We are not planning to upgrade DB server to Oracle 10g yet!! So, can we run DB server on oracle 9i 32bit and oracle client 10g 64bit on applicaton servers??

    A little puntualization:
    the oracle client software version depends on the sap version and not on the oracle server version...as far as i remember, oracle client 10 is either supported for sap kernel 7.00 or the brtools 7.00, which means that you cannot use oracle client 10 with sap kernel 46D_EXT
    This is correct for <i>UNIX</i> systems, not for windows.
    On windows the client to be used is the same version as the RDBMS.
    I think this also answers Igor question.
    If you RDBMS software is 9i then you have to use the client 9i

  • Snow Server with Wi-Fi clients - good idea?

    Hi everyone,
    I am planning on purchasing a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server. Currently we have 2 iMacs, one MacBook Pro and a PC (will be going soon!) all networked with a wireless gateway and AirPort Express. Everything works well. However I want to consolidate things. Store all user accounts in one central location (so access, management, backup etc. becomes easier).
    My question is if I buy the Mac Mine Server would I have to connect the clients (atleast the desktops) physically to the server through Ethernet or can ALL clients work over Wi-Fi? I think in offices/businesses etc. Ethernet is preferred and is common. What are the merits and demerits of Ethernet and Wi-Fi (other than the obvious ones)? What about speed? (we have 802.11g for Wi-Fi). Is accessing the Mac OS X Server over Wi-Fi in large numbers and no wired clients a common scenario?
    Is it possible to turn the Mac Mini into a "headless" server. If yes, how?

    Wired Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) networking is massively faster than 802.11n 5 GHz dual-slot is massively faster than 802.11b/g.
    If you're sipping bandwidth, you probably won't notice the difference here.
    If you're slinging any serious quantities of data around, you'll quickly find yourself moving to 802.11n 5 GHz dual-slot (locally 200+ Mb), or to GbE wired.
    If you're in an environment with interference from other WiFi stations, then 5 GHz can avoid the racket in 2.4 GHz band. Regardless, wired networking typically has a much reduced likelihood of interference.
    I generally prefer to run a mid- to upper-end firewall, and to use one or more AirPort or Time Capsule boxes as an access point (AP), and preferably with a gigabit wired "backhaul" to the network.
    A Mac Mini is more than capable of running Open Directory and other such; just make sure you work out your archival strategy, lest you end up with a corruption or data loss or such. RAID is nice and a decent defense against a disk failure, but it doesn't protect against corruptions and deletions. (The Mac Mini Server can have interna; RAID. Other Mac Mini boxes can have external RAID added via the FireWire 400 or FW800 connection or (less desirably) via USB, and external RAID storage.)
    The Mac Mini box doesn't need a head, but it doesn't hurt to have an old LCD and a keyboard available for hook-up to the box; that equipment is cheap and common and usually already available, and it can make various management tasks easier. If you want to administer the box fully remotely, then investing in a network power strip or remotely network-managed Less- Interruptible Power Supply can be useful; having a remote power switch can avoid a few trips over to the box to reset or reboot it.
    And if you're setting up the network fresh, stay out of 192.168.0.0/16 private class c; use the 10.0.0.0/8 private class a or 172.16.0.0/12 private class b blocks, as either of these blocks tends to avoid VPN-related IP routing problems that tend to arise with subnets in 192.168.0.0/16.

    We have some mac OS 10.8 laptops which connect to our 10.6.8 server.
    All the policies that are applied using workgroup manager work fine apart from the drive mapping ones.
    When logging in 70% of the time no drives are mapped whereas the remaining 30% the drives map fine
    This isn't an issue with our 10.6.8 workstations which map the drives with no issues
    Is this just a compatibility issue or is there something I need to change to get them working correctly?

  • Windows iTunes Server with Apple TV clients

    Hello everyone.
    I am hoping to set up a new digital media system in my house. I have the following plan, and would like to know how well this would work.
    I want to install a "Server" box with windows server 2008, and put the latest version of iTunes on it, then authorise it with my apple store account and set iTunes to run on start up. Then, I want to get two apple TV's put one in my bedroom, and one in the lounge and hook them both up to the server.
    Next, I will rip all of the DVD's I own with something like MacTheRipper, and then handbreak them down into the smaller file format. Hopefully then I will be able to watch all of my DVD movies in both the bedroom and the lounge disc free.
    Also, using home sharing, will I be able to copy media from my, and my girlfriends mac books to the server, or will I need to be on the server, and copy from the mac books? (Could syncing help here).
    Also, for occasions where I am not in the lounge, bedroom (for example when cooking) would I be able to point front row on my macbook to the iTunes server?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to get going with this little pet project ASAP.

    You could always just hard wire the mini since it doesn't matter where you put it.

  • One RMI server with 2 different clients

    I have an RMI server which implements 2 different remote interfaces (call them InterfaceA and InterfaceB).
    I then have 2 client programs, ClientA and ClientB, each using their respective interface.
    When I try to run ClientA, I get a ClassDefNotFound exception for InterfaceB - which CientA never references.
    I'm thinking it is because there is only one Stub class for the server, meaning it has info on InterfaceA and InterfaceB.
    My questions are:
    Is it possible to make 2 seperate stub classes from one implementation class?, one for each interface?
    If not, is there some other way I can do this setup?

    Why not have two classes on the server:
    ClassA implements interfaceA
    ClassB implements interfaceB
    and bind both
    objectA (instance of ClassA) for clientA, and
    objectB (instance of classB) for clientB.

    JMF does not have RTSP server capabilities built-in. You would have to program the RTSP request-response protocol yourself.

  • How to use iCal Server with clients?

    Ok, so since I can't find this anywhere... How do I use iCal Server with other desktop clients? I've selected the user, enabled calendaring, the user can authenticate in web-based group calendars. But then I'm stuck.
    How do I give them their own calendar?
    In iCal, I go to Accounts and try and enter the info but it fails every time. I tried the dns name like so: "calendar.example.edu" but it generates an error. But the user can log in to the web calendar for groups. Where is the users individual calendar located?
    The help menu ignores that field as if it's not needed, but then it fails because the calendar doesn't know where the server is. The clients can't all be OD bound, so this has to work outside of Open Directory. According to Apple other CalDAV clients can connect too. How? Computers just don't "connect" on their own.
    Anyone know the answer?

    I was getting the same error when I tried to subscribe to a calendar using:

    principals/users/usershortname
    I found that if I added a trailing slash to the URL then it would work :
    Subscribe to: http://myserver.example.com:8008/
    principals/users/usershortname/
    (the way I found this was to navigate via the web browser to http://myserver.example.com:8008 then authenticate as a user, then navigating through to http://myserver.example.com:8008/principals/users/ where you can see all the user names all with a trailing slash after them)

    I can connect to XE using http://192.168.19.30:8080/apex
    The problem is that I can't use ODBC driver
    In other hand, I can connect to the server in SQL command line, using :
    CONNECT SYSTEM/*******@192.168.19.30
    I saw in Oracle documentation that in Windows it's necessarie to use environnement variables to setup XEClient.
    Do you have any idea on how to configure client and ODBC driver ?

    The customer has a problem with WAAS mobile client. When he disabled WAAS mobile client - all is working, but http is not working.:-( On the server the accelerated networks are configured.The browser send the http request, but the response is not received:-( For other clients it is working. Thank you for help.

    I have WAAS mobile server version 3.4.0.1460 on the Windows2003 server with SP1. Client OS is Windows XP. All clients who use WAAS mobile client have WinXP on their notebooks. All clients are on the same network. This client sees this problem when the waas client is active, disabled, and for now when the waas mobile client is uninstalled - it seems like waas mobile client changed registers for IE or FireFox - so all http answers are redirected to nonexisting waas mobile client:-(

  • How to control one server with multiple clients via TCP/IP

    I am wanting to control a single server with multiple clients.  Only one client would be active at a time, so there would be no conflict.  I want to use TCP/IP.  So far, I have programmed a cluster that passes data back to the server with no problems.  The challenge come in when a second client is added to the mix.  I have't been able to figure out how to turn each client on and send the appropriate data and then turn it off so it doesn't keep sending the same data to the server. 
    Here are the things that I have considered and did some preliminary testing, but don't really know how to impliment:
    1.  Send a numeric on the front of the cluster packet that tells the server that data is on the way.
    2.  Send a boolean on the front of the cluster packet to somehow turn the server TCP/IP on.
    The problem I have found is that LabVIEW TCP/IP doesn't like to be turned on and off.  If it doesn't get the data it expects, it goes into a reset mode and that kills the response time.
    Any help?

    You should consider implementing a set of simple one-byte commands that can be sent back and forth between the Server and the Clients. You can base all of these ideas off the example in the Example Finder under Networking >> TCP and UDP called Multiple Connections - Server.
    You will have two loops in the server VI: one to wait for new connections, and one to send and receive data from the existing connections. For instance, after one of the clients connects, it can request control of the server to send data to it by sending the character "R" for request. Every time the send/receive loop of the Server executes, the first thing it can do is to check all the existing connections to see if any of the clients have sent a control request ("R"). If so, it will create a buffer (array) of control requests. This could be in the form of Connection IDs or indexes in the array for a particular Connection ID. Your choice.
    After the Server receives a request for contol, if it is not already under control by another client, then it can send a response to the first client on the control request list. For instance, the server could send the first client a "S" command for send. Note that after the clients send their control request, they should execute a TCP Read and wait indefinitely for the server to respond with the one-byte "S" command. Then, once the client in control is finished sending data to the server, it could send the character "X" telling the Server to release it from control.
    The example I mentioned above already does a similar thing. Note how when a client wants to disconnect, they send the letter "Q". You can see this in the Multiple Connections - Client VI. The Server then checks each individual connection to see if it's received this one-byte command, and if it has, it closes the connection to the client. This is what you would want to implement, but instead of having just one command, you'll have to distinguish between a few and build up a buffer of control requests.
    Finally, if a client does decide to disconnect in your application, they could send the command "Q" just like the example above. At this point, close the connection and remove that Connection ID from the array of connections. You will also have to handle the case that this client was in the request control waiting line when it disconnected, in which case you need to delete it from that array as well.
    This will definitely work for you, but it will take some work. Best of luck!

  • Can log into Yosemite server (4.0) VPN service with a Mavericks client, but not Yosemite client

    Sever Info:
    Yosemite Server 4.0 running on a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8 GB RAM with vpnd service enabled
    The server was upgraded to Yosemite - not clean install - this may not matter (see below)
    Airport extreme router with standard VPN UDP ports for L2TP forwarded to server (500, 1701, 4500)
    Client info:
    MB Air 13" early 2014 with 8 GB RAM
    Yosemite
    Mavericks 10.9.5 running as a Parallels virtual machine (don't ask - I need it to run an app for work that is not yet compatible with Yosemite)
    OD service is NOT running - no VPN connections ever occurred from ANY client with this service running - OD is not needed in my case fortunately
    With the OD service off, I can connect via the Mavericks virtual machine just fine, but not with Yosemite. With Yosemite, the ppp connection appears to occur, but server config requests appear to fall on deaf ears (client side doesn't appear to respond) until the connection times out. Can't figure out what triggers the client response to a server config request. Client side complains about no route to host and IP addresses don't get assigned to the connection.
    The connection happens successfully in an eyeblink with the Mavericks client. Same username/password/shared secret in both instances.
    Tried a generated .vpnconfig from the server, this also did not work.
    It's possible that it is an auth problem, but can't figure out how the process occurs or what may be going wrong. There does not seem to be an obvious way to increase the granularity of the logging such that it might give other hints - at least that I can find. I found plenty of references to VPN issues when people upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks as well as work arounds for this. I tried the most promising looking of those - no love. I reverted everything back to stock install since I could at least connect with Mavericks.
    If log entries would be helpful, they are included below. I've stared at them long enough - perhaps a new set of eyes can provide a hint.
    In addition, I can find no documentation regarding the VPN service in Yosemite server so as to get a clue as to whether there have been changes in racoon since Mavericks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
