10.4.7 sleep problem "solved"...kind-of...

Hello, all. I was having a problem w/ my PowerMac G5 after the 10.4.7 update - it would not go to sleep. The screen would freeze and the computer would not respond...and it wouldn't sleep. Eventually, the fans would crank up to full blast and that's where it would stay until it was forcefully powered down. I checked the system.log file and it stated that sleep was "prevented by non-power-managed IOService".
I then removed the two externally-connected USB devices that were attached - a Griffin PowerMate and a D-Link DBT-120 (rev.B4) Bluetooth adapter - and the computer went to sleep just fine. I then reconnected the PowerMate, and it still went to sleep just fine. Lastly, I attached the Bluetooth adapter. Yep, that was the culprit. The PM wouldn't go to sleep with the BT-120 attached (but it did before the 10.4.7 update).
So, I'm now running w/o the adapter attached, but I would like to find a real solution as I'd like to reattach the adapter. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to really fix the sleep issue I'm having?
Regards,
Curt

You may be able to manually replace the Extension that's causes the incompatibility with the version from 10.4.6. I did this to solve same sort of sleep issue with a USB PCI card. Instructions here. The file in that post seems specific to USB, though it's been proposed that it may help with Bluetooth also- don't know since I don't have BT installed.
FWIW, the BT drivers, IOBluetoothFamily.kext, was updated with 10.4.7. If that is the only problem and it worked in 10.4.6, going back may work until Firmware updates become available.

  • Possible reason for the iMac G5 with 10.4.3 Sleep Problems

    Ok first off let me say that I got this new iMac G5 20" about 4 days ago. It's wonderful. If anyone out there is holding out for the intel machines, don't wait, get a G5. It's a fantastic machine. Now on to the meat of the subject. The story goes like this; I hooked up my Plextor PVR with eyeTV to my iMac to see how well it would do (been using it with a P4 Windoze XP machine and my iBook G4 14" with no problems). It worked just great. No problems with the iMac, the PVR or any of my other addons (including the boatload of software I migrated over from the iBook). So I set up EyeTV to record some stuff while I was asleep. It's supposed to wake up the Mac, record the shows then the Mac goes back to sleep. Easy huh? Well the wakeup, record part went just fine but the Mac wouldn't go back to sleep. Perplexed (actually thrilled, this is where I have my most fun with new machines, figuring out why they aren't working correctly) I did all the standard "I can't get my Mac to sleep automatically" things. You know, blow away all the plist files that have anything to do with powermanagement and autowake, reset NVRAM from OF, reset the PRAM (3 times just like the old days), reset the SMU, blow away all the Bluetooth plist files, etc, etc. Did them all, don't suggest any, I did them all I swear, really. I've been through this kind of thing before. One big difference with this iMac. Nothing and I mean nothing would work to fix the problem. The only way the bad boy would sleep is by hitting the Power button for a second or selecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Hmmmm. Spent the better part of a morning reading every thread here about peoples problems like mine. One post and I mean exactly one had something I hadn't tried. I rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down while it boots until you get the login screen with the red text "Safe Mode".) I forgot that OSX even did that. Logged in as myself (normal login but still in safe mode) and low and behold the thing would sleep automatically! I repeated this (boot in normal mode, boot in safe mode) many times. Every single time the Mac would sleep from safe mode but not from normal mode. Tells me it's software not hardware. In each mode I run "Activity Monitor" and save a list of the running processes to a text file. Now compare them and shutdown each process that is different one at a time. To make this story somewhat shorter (heh) I finally found that I could consistantly make the machine sleep or not sleep by killing the "mdimport" process and restarting it. This has to do with Spotlight. To be exact, it's the process that imports Metadata into Spotlights data list (I'm no expert, have a basic understanding of this). So on a hunch I ran the terminal and entered the command to delete then rebuild Spotlights databases, "mdutil -E /". Then I let Spotlight rebuild that databases and rebooted. Guess what? The iMac sleeps perfectly now, go figure. I did this once so far and the Mac has been working correctly now for about 5 hours. I've got a feeling that the problem will come back. Especially if it's an inherent problem in Spotlight and the 10.4.3 upgrade. I don't seem to have this problem with 10.4 or earlier. Long post I know but I thought it could help someone out. Please post any comments. I'd like to know if what I did is coincidence (I really don't think so since I reproduced it many times) or not.

    iBook G4 1Gig, iMac G5 2.1 Gig, iMac 266   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMac 266 running 10.3.6, been using Macs since the '80s

    Right guy's i to have researched this problem
    concerning my auto sleep problem.I started off by
    following Joeaux's original post by safe
    booting,noting what was running in the activity
    monitor,booting normaly and again noting what was
    running now.I eliminated the same processes that were
    running from both boots, and then started quiting one
    by one, the extra processes, from the normal boot, in
    activity monitor.Once you quit a process, allow the
    computer to try to go to sleep i.e set energy saver
    to 1minute and wait to see what happens.I tried the "
    mdimport"as of Joeaux but this was not my problem.In
    my case the sleep problem was down to two
    applications called N67U_ButtonManager and
    N124U_ButtonManager.These are for use with my Canon
    scanner.I also noted that if i left the scanner
    connected to the computer this would also stop it
    going to sleep,even after deleting the two
    applications.Hope this helps!
    Thank you now i know that those login items are for my scanner, and not logic audio i am a little less angry(Logic is now an apple application but the version I run was from the emagic days and i presumed that the button managers were from this app as it was the oldest bit of software running on my machine) By the way any apps that may cause a problem like this are more than likely simply residing in your user login items and can be disabled from there permanently as far as i can see.

  • Unresponsive Keyboard and Trackpad problem AT STARTUP + Sleep problem

    When I turn on my computer it boots the OS and everything works except for the trackpad and the keyboard. I wait for about 5-7 minutes and then the trackpad and the keyboard start working.
    Additional problems:
    If I try to sleep my computer, the screen turns off, but the computer never stops working, so I have to force it to shut down.
    Temporal Solutions
    1) Boot in safe mode, it solves the trackpad/keyboard problems but not the Sleeping problem
    Attempted fixes
    1) Conencted external keyboard mouse/keyboard. Doesn't work
    2) Reset the battery controller.
    3) Reinstalled 10.6
    4) Installed 10.5
    5) Installed 10.6.3
    Known Stuff:
    1) The trackpad/keyboard are always connected as I can move the mouse and use some gestures with the Better Touch Tool app, and the keyboard works because if I click the Caps Lock key, the small led turns on.
    2) Also, I have the HardwareGrowler app which tells me if hardware gets connected or disconnected and it never tells me anything about the trackpad/keyboard getting disconnected.
    3) The OS is working at startup because apps show stuff and get updated and I can still get growl notifications.
    NOTE: This is an intermittent problem, about 1 out of 10 times I turn on the computer I GET the problem.
    Thanks a lot!

    I came across a similar issue as the original poster. My trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive for 5 - 7 minutes after startup. I've updated my OS to 10.6.4 twice and it's still happening. I recognized this behavior after the Preferences->Network pane froze while I was trying to remove a VPN setting. Removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations did not help the problem.
    Do any of you have advice on debugging the issue?

  • PROBLEM SOLVED--CS5 WIN7 X64 INSTALL ERROR DEPENDENCY FAILURE

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I just spent 9  hours straight on this, but will was stronger than "its". Now I have  both cs4 and cs5, but hopefully it will work if you just have cs5 as  well. I also did not try runnning cs5 installer first after implementing  the fix, maybe that will work too..And when getting the cs5 error, I  went to re-install cs4 but got an error as well so that is why I took  the steps I did. On 7x64 do the followin
    First  run the cs5 cleanup tool and reboot.
    Second,  go into c:\program file(x86)\common files\adobe\installers . Delete  everything in it
    Then go into you registry  (start, run, then type regedit) and expand to this registry key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\ Components  ...(if this isnt there, try an install again, then go to the folder  that you deleted the files from a moment ago and extract the log from  the zip file and open it and go to the end. where it says error 1402  will be followed by a unknown\components\(a bunch of numebers right  here)\(more numbers)  ...
    Copy the numbers  directly after the components\ and go back into registry and click edit  then "find" paste those numbers into the box and hit find..when you get  to the key, scroll ALL the way back up to components again. Right click  components and hit permissions.. Go to advanced and then the ownership  tab up top.. click edit, hightlight administrator(s), check the box to  "replace subcontainers" and click apply. respond yes to everything and  close that and hit apply again if asked. then click the add button above  the advanced button you just clicked. when the new box appears, click  advanced and then click find now. Highlight Administrators and SYSTEM  and hit OK. Then give both of them full rights and hit apply. Then click  advanced again and in the first window check the box that says "replace  all child objects...." and hit apply. accept the prompts and hit okay.
    Now  go into c:\windows and on the system32 folder, right click and go to  properties. Go to the security tab. Click advanced and then "owner" and  click edit. highlght administrators and check the box "replace all child  object....." again and hit apply....
    Now give  Administrators, SYSTEM, AND TrustedInstaller full rights by clicking  edit above the advanced tab in the first properties box.. Then click  advanced again and in the first window click replace all child  object....." again and hit apply....
    Now  do the same for the winsxs folder and (for good measure i did syswow64  but not sure if its necessary)...
    Now you should  be able to install both versions..(as i said, I installed cs4 first,  maybe it was not necessary)...
    If you dont  like the idea of just blindly giving administrators full rights to all  system folders, you can spend MANY MANY hours running the installs over  and over and getting the faulty registry value that caused it to fail  and create specific permissions for that and then go on to the next  value that fails......what a pain

    Thank you for this.
    I have been trying to install CS5 MC now for weeks. I first got it to install everything except After Effects and Premiere Pro. Then trying to follow all the suggestions on this forum I wound up not being able to install any part of it at all. Now..
    Well...following your kind suggestions as much to the letter as I could I have now been able to install everything...except Affter Effects and Premiere Pro. Sigh.
    At least I can get back to work on everything that doesn't require AE and PPro.  I still need to get them installed and working.

  • Powerbook sleep problem

    I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
    Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
    I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
    Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
    I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
    What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
    4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
    4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

  • Were any reboot after sleep problems NOT fixed by the EFI firmware update?

    The subject says it all. I wanted to get a read on whether this EFI update really did solve the reboot after sleep problem for all 2008 Mac Pros. If have an early '08 Pro that had the problem before the update and it didn't go away after the update (and it's not due to some other problem like kernel panics, etc.), then please post details in this thread. thanks!

    We have 4 total systems (all had the issue, all slightly different configurations) and the reboot-on-wake issue has disappeared on all 4 of them.
    Looks like a definitive fix to me.

  • Diagnosing sleep problem w/ MacPro

    With 10.4 I had no problems, but since installing 10.5 my MacPro will not automatically go to sleep. My monitor goes to sleep, but unless I press the power button the MacPro won't. I've turned off all of my 3rd party apps but that hasn't solved the problem.
    Below is a short copy of my system log. Since I can't really make any sense of it, does anyone else see a clue to what the problem may be? Any suggestions on a course on diagnosing this?

  • Vista x64 Sleep Problem (no sleep, blank screen)

    Just after installing the PCI-E X-Fi Fatalty card, my computer is now unable to go to sleep. It just hangs there at a blank screen with everything still working. Once I reinstalled the X-Fi driver in the device manager and that fixed it for a minute but the sleep problem still came back when I switched from Game Mode (default setting) to Audio Creation Mode. Now even if I reinstall the driver completely and not touch anything, the problem is still there. Maybe its the way Vista detects and assigns the memory space to the card I would like to get this resolved, my system specs are below.

    I have replaced the power supply now and there is no change. I see a flash of the backlight when I initially power the system on, then the post beeps and nothing displayed.
    To recap, initially the system would not post. I attributed this, correctly, to a failed video card. Replaced it and I'm reasonably certain I could boot into Windows though I couldn't see anything. There was appropriate POST beeps and hard drive activity light consistent with Windows booting. When I waited for the hard drive activity light to stop, I could then press the power button and there would be hard drive activity consistent with Windows shutting down and the system would power off.
    I replaced the inverter, but I lost track of which power leads were connected where on the inverter board. (IF anyone knows where the pink and blue leads connect for certain PLEASE let me know). Anyway, no change.
    I replaced the LCD. No change.
    I replaced the motherboard. No change.
    I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one. No change.
    I cleared the BIOS config, now I can't boot into Windows but otherwise, no change.
    Finally, I bought a power supply, as recommended, and replaced it and you guessed it, no change.
    So I guess, besides maybe getting the inverter connected incorrectly, I have tried replacing every part that I could even remotely imagine could cause my issue. I have devoted a lot of time to figuring this out and I almost always solve a system problem. Help!?!

  • G510s/windows 8.1 sleep problems (power management options & BIOS do not correct it)

    hi there,
    suddenly seemingly for no reason, the sleep function of my machine no longer works properly.  when the machine goes to sleep, it either shuts itself off or goes into unwakable hibernation, in which case i must shut  the machine off improperly and crash my open files.  the fan also stays on non-stop when it is in unwakable hibernation.
    i have changed the power management options numerous times based on suggestions i have read about or been told via lenovo support, and in each case, the sleep function works properly the next 5 times or so, but then the same old problem arises again.
    in addition, i now receive pop-up boxes every time i turn the machine on that indicate that the start menu has been updated, and it asks me if i want to install skype, etc.  this is now a daily occurrance, and i wonder if it is related to the sleep problems, or if this is a new unrelated glitch.
    please tell me how to fix the machine, keeping in mind that i have already changed the power settings numerous times to no avail.  in addition, my BIOS is and always has been up to date, as this is a brand new machine.
    thanks very much in advance,

    After upgrading to Windows 8.1 did you install the appropriate chipset driver and IMEI software?
    Which BIOS version did you install?

  • 15" AL PB G4 Sleep Problems

    Another in the long list of sleep problems. Running the latest & greatest Tiger and all that. I have read and read and READ! the discussions and followed most of the advise to no avail. Here's what's up.
    When I try to put the PB to sleep, either by closing the lid or through apple menu, everything starts out ok. Screen goes dark, LED comes on, Great! At the moment when the LED becomes brightest, the Superdrive makes a noise like it is cycling, and the PB wakes up. If I leave the lid closed it continues this indefinitely. If the lid is up, it wakes and the srceen flashes from desktop to black a couple of times the seems ok.
    When I open the lid after experiencing this behavior I can hear the machine wake, but screen stays black. Must turn off by holding down power button, then start up again and all is fine.
    Any one else experiencing this drive cycling?
    Thanx,

  • Power Mac G4 sleep problem

    Hello!
    My G4 (mdd) won't go to sleep anymore. Neither on its own via energy saver nor when you press the power button or select sleep in the apple menu. Does anyone know what to do?
    I already unplugged my USB devices, didn't help. Then I trashed my energy saver and bluetooth preferences and reset PRAM by pressing <commandoption+PR> at startup, no luck. I read all the previous posts about this issue and did everything they said, but it didn't help.
    maybe someone has an additional suggestion.
    Thank you!
    David
    Power Mac G4 (mdd) 867 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
    In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
    Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
    If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
    In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
    Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
    Yours would be the 10.3.9 combo update. Others here would use the one for their version.
    Cheers!

  • Leopard sleep problem which seems related to Entourage 2008...

    Hi all,
    I have a MBP (3,1) running 10.5.2 and I noticed about 3 months ago that if I left the lid open the energy saver triggered sleep wouldn't kick in (very hot laptop next morning syndrome).
    I've read a number of other threads on Leopard auto-sleep problems (which pointed to the HP AIO frameworks) but this doesn't appear to be the same issue I have...
    If I quit Entourage 2008 then the computer will sleep after the correct period of time - and that's with no other changes to my normal use. Of course I'd like to not have to worry about quitting Entourage each time I might, maybe, just possibly not be back at the computer for a while.
    Now in the system log I do keep getting the following strange entries:
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Entourage[914]: Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
    I have no idea what this really does and I do appear to have such a file in the system called X509Anchors...
    If I switch Entourage to Offline mode then the entries don't appear in the system log anymore but... the unit still won't sleep. It requires Entourage not to be running it seems.
    Having not seen anything else on the discussions forum relating to Entourage 2008 preventing auto-sleep I'm beginning to wonder whether it's just me?!?
    Anyone else seeing this effect? And most importantly, does anyone know of a fix?
    I have tried the NMS sleep utility stuff and although it worked perfectly whilst I was testing it using Energy saver timings of 1 minute... as soon as I upped the time back to my usual 30 minutes for CPU sleep it failed to work again.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Ok two things based on the crash report and the steps you took right before the crash:
    # Try to disable scrolling acceleration and restart Firefox. Does it continue to crash?
    # Try Safe Mode and do the same task as above with email and the pdf [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
    # Also pdf.js may be helpful to read pdfs in the meantime. You can change the default reader in the Preferences/Options > Application menu of Firefox.
    # Try to clear out the downloads folder and update flash to version 14 (that should do it)
    IF it crashes again please also provide the new crash signatures and we can take a look :-) Sorry for the crashing :-(

    Nobody knows.  iWorks apps have always had bugs that make them unsuitable for Hebrew/Arabic for most people.  Tell Apple here:

    Alex,
    the missing thing in your example is the fact, that if only one value is selected, the parameter has exact this value like BOSTON. If you choose more than one value, the parameter includes the *'*, so that it looks like *'BOSTON','NEW YORK'*. So you need to check in the package, if there's a *,* in the parameter or not. If yes there's more than one value, if not it's only one value or it's null.
    So change your package to (you need to expand your variables)
    create or replace package bip_departments_2_parameters
    as
    p_dep_2_param varchar2(1000);
    p_loc_1_param varchar2(1000);
    p_where_clause varchar2(1000);
    function beforereporttrigger
    return boolean;
    end bip_departments_2_parameters;
    create or replace package body bip_departments_2_parameters
    as
    function beforereporttrigger
    return boolean
    is
    l_return boolean := true;
    begin
    p_where_clause := ' ';
    if p_dep_2_param is not null then
    if instr(p_dep_2_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := 'WHERE DNAME in ('||p_dep_2_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := 'WHERE DNAME = '''||p_dep_2_param||'''';
    end if;
    if p_loc_1_param is not null then
    if instr(p_loc_1_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || ' AND LOC IN ('||p_loc_1_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || ' AND LOC = '''||p_loc_1_param||'''';
    end if;
    end if;
    else
    if p_loc_1_param is not null then
    if instr(p_loc_1_param,',')>0 then
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || 'WHERE LOC in ('||p_loc_1_param||')';
    else
    p_where_clause := p_where_clause || 'WHERE LOC = '''||p_loc_1_param||'''';
    end if;
    end if;
    end if;
    return (l_return);
    end beforereporttrigger;
    end bip_departments_2_parameters;
    I've written a similar example at http://www.oracle.com/global/de/community/bip/tipps/Dynamische_Queries/index.html ... but it's in german.
