10.5.7 Has killed my machine

I ran the updater from the software update pane, restarted. After several minutes a message popped up saying that it could not be installed and to contact the maker of the software (which is obviously Apple). I clicked the only button available, which was "Restart", but it hung on the spinning tick marks for about 20 minutes. I force shut down the machine and now it just shuts down each time about 5 seconds after POST (the boot chime) suggesting a kernel panic.
Booting into single user, disk utility says that it cannot repair the disk. Typing "exit" causes the kernel panic to happen.
It simply will not boot now. I can't even begin to explain my anger at this point... but I digress.
I am going to search for an install disk or disk warrior, but wanted to add my two cents here. Bad form all around.
Thank you.

Hello,
The best way to check your hard disk is by booting from your install disk and running Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
Check available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

  • 10.4.6 Has killed my machine TWICE

Twice I have tried to install 10.4.6 on my 533 MHz G4 and both times I have been locked in never ending start up. In fact, the first time I tried to install this update I think it somehow killed my system drive. I have since switched to a new hard drive and once again it has been killed. After both installs my 10.4 install disk has encountered "errors while installing" even when told to do a clean install and forced me to try again.
I am now looking at a boot screen that has been "booting" for about 2 hours while writing this from my laptop.

  • Boot Camp Killed Time Machine?

I'm going to try to offer the short version of this story...
Using Boot Camp I created a Windows partitiion and, using the Boot Camp instructions available from within the Boot Camp assistant, got XP Home installing. About halfway through the install (after it's asked you to configure your time zone and network settings etc.) it locked up. Having no other option, I powered it off. When I turned it back on it went into XP Home however I couldn't do the next step of installing the software off the OSX CD because for some reason it wouldn't read it.
I started the Windows installation again, this time it gave me a BSOD. So, I rebooted, held down the option key, went into OSX, ran Boot Camp and killed the windows partition. I remembered that I had difficulty with this copy of XP Home before and went after my XP Pro CD.
I started the Boot Camp process over again, creating the partition, however this time when the installation got to the section of picking the partition, the Boot Camp partition wasn't there. So I had no choice but to cancel.
Giving up and not wanting to mess with this anymore, I rebooted into OSX and once again deleted the partition. This time I noticed my Time Machine drive was no longer showing up on the desktop and the backups said they were delayed because there was no drive. So I reboot and I'm brought to a black screen saying there's no bootable media. I reboot, hold down option and boot into OSX. Still no Time Machine drive. I reboot again and once again see the "no bootable media" error. I'm stuck in a loop AND my Time Machine drive simply isn't mounting.
Being that I deleted the windows partion and OSX is the only thing that comes up on an option-key reboot - I don't quite get why it's looking for the Windows install disk. I also don't get where my external hard drive has gone. I should mention I have unplugged it and tried to force it to remount with no luck.
I want to run Time Machine and get things back to normal... but I can't because what has caused the mess to begin with has also killed Time Machine. Help??

Ok so I got my external drive to be recognized again by plugging it in via firewire but still no joy on the Boot Camp. I guess I'll just try again and see what happens.

  • How to find which user has killed a particular job in CPS?

    Hi All,
I am new in CPS. I want to find the user who has killed a particular job in CPS?
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi  Gerben,
    Thanks for the reply.
But I noticed when I  killed a job and checked in the  last modified by option I didn't  find my user name there. It was displaying the user who had modified that job definition last time.

  • Recent Windows 7 Update has killed windows

Help, I run Windows 7 in Bootcamp, recent windows 7 update has killed windows, this is what happens.
Choose to boot to windows - OK
    Hit logon screen - OK
    Logon - OK
Windows loads, the desktop shows for about 5 seconds and then the screen goes blank.
The computer is still ON but the screen is blank.
I can boot into safemode OK, but can't run the bootcamp update (that I downloaded from here) in safemode.
I tried a restore point, but the ones before the update create an error, so thats a no go.
My thoughts are that it is a video driver issue, but that doesn't explain how it gets passed logon working OK.
I don't know how to fix this if the only way to update drivers is via an .exe vs the driver files themselves like windows usually likes.

You could try this advice from the Windows side.
Startup Repair is a good place to start if your system starts acting up. If you can’t get the Advanced Boot Options screen by hitting F8, you can also access the tools by booting from a System Recovery Disc, or the Windows installation disc. While System Repair might not be able to recover your system in all situations, it’s a great starting point before getting into more detailed recoveries like Restoring from an image or clean install.

Mountain lion has killed my mac book pro. After downloading and trying to install, I am stuck in a loop of "not enough room to install on this disk" and not being able to access the old disk's data to open up space.

Nope. It just opened the installer and stayed in the same loop.
It tells me to choose a startup disk but the only option is the HD which it will not use because it says it cannot gather enough information.
Eveything was working fine until the mountain lion failed install.

Recently I erased an iPhone 3 so that it could be passed on and used by someone else, using the erase all content and settings feature. This has killed my iPhone and it is now stuck on the Apple logo. I have tried a restore in iTunes but recovery fails. This is not a jailbroken iPhone. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

If you haven't already tried, see if you can force it into recovery mode to restore it:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.  If that doesn't work, the last thing you can try is to put it in DFU mode to restore it: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2648467?threadID=2648467&tstart=0.

  • My iPhone has killed four pairs of earbuds

Four times now since I got my iPhone in mid-July, my earbuds have gone bad on one side. The first two times it sounded like a tweeter (i.e. high pitched frequencies sounded "crunchy"), then a woofer (low sounds sounded crunchy), and now it is sort of a weird buzz, which is different than either of the past two.
Every time so far I just brought them in to the apple store and they gave me a new pair without problems. This last pair lasted less than a week.
I definitely do not listen to music at loud volumes -- I am not into that at all. I have no idea what is going on. It seems crazy to me that the phone/earbud combination would be designed in a way that the phone could even put out enough volume to damage the earbuds (if that is in fact the cause).
Anyway, has this been happening to anybody else? Could there conceivably be something wrong with the phone itself, or is this par for the course?

I haven't experienced the same - still using the original set included with my iPhone purchased on 6/29 which work great and based on the number of posts here regarding this which have been few and far between, I don't believe this is par for the course and shouldn't be nor do I believe your iPhone has killed anything. I think you've experienced some bad luck getting a bad earbud set one after the other which doesn't seem likely and should not happen but certainly possible.
Keep making Apple replace your earbuds until you get a set that doesn't fail and/or try a loaner iPhone (should be at no charge in this situation) with a new earbud set. If this works without issue with the loaner iPhone for a week or so and then fail just after being used with your iPhone, this will indicate the problem is with your iPhone and will be repaired or replaced under warranty.

Installing Mac OSX Lion has killed Macromedia (Adobe) Freehand 11 – which is otherwise perfectly viable, current graphics software (originally designed for Mac, I thought). I now cannot open valuable files used to create figures for publications, and work 'underway' is dead in the water. Apparently Apple, in their wisdom, have decided to no longer support 'Power PC' software. Any solutions? Work arounds?

Good point/question (Does Lion have some function I need/want?). It seems, from the blurb, that the move to iCloud requires, or will be best supported by, Lion. Certainly they're saying that iOS5 on iPhone will be needed, and it's implied that iOS5 and Lion are designed for compatibility. So yes, perhaps, not sure.
At this exact moment in time, yes, Lion is required. There are "rumors" of a 10.6.9 SL release for iCloud, but that type of discussion is not allowed here, so I won't discuss it.
However, your idea, and from the other replies, to run SL on another partition – yes I did backup before installing Lion – sounds like a way forward. I'll try it – thanks!
I do think that's the best plan at present. You're welcome, and good luck.

  • Verizon "flips switch" that has killed Pegasus mail over SSL

Last night Verizon email.administrators "flipped a switch" that has killed the use of Pegasus mail over SSL using TCP ports 465 and 995 as Verizon suggests we use.
I have experienced this and so has every other Pegasus Mail user who is on Verizon email.
There are posts on Usenet and posts on the Pegasus Forums
Thus the problem is not just me but ANYONE who is using Pegasus mail with the Verizon email server using...
    # Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
    # Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
    # Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
    # Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465 Why is this important?
    # Your Verizon Online user name
    # Your Verizon Online password
    # Make sure "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked.
    The Lithium Software sux !!

Might be a bug in Pegasus related to TLS 1.1/1.2 security.  Based on someones post over at the site you pointed to looks like its not picking up the entire key.  Microsoft made changes in the support modules to fix a bug earlier this year and it causes the key to be split over transmissions.  Almost the same thing happend for web pages, including Verizons, when that change went in.

Attempts to restore to an older version (7.1.2) failed as well. Same error.

    Has iOS8 destroyed my phone?

    Hi vijay294,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you received a restore error while attempting to update to iOS 8 and now you see the Connect to iTunes graphic on your display. In this situation, I would recommend using recovery mode to restore your iPhone. Please use the instructions located in the attached article to complete this process.

  • Update for OSX 10.2.? has killed my mouse

I have an IMAC blue with CRT. It came with OS 9 and update discs to OSX and a further update CD to I think OSX 10.2.?
However it may be and older version of OSX as I can't see the current version as machine has problems.
I had not used the machine for a while and when I started it the other night it said I needed to update which I did. I think it was the combo update. I am running Norton Anti Virus. It got 98% of way through the update and froze. I left it for a while but as the only thing I could do was move the mouse but not then click on anything I was forced to unplug it. Since then when I start the machine up it looks like it is working but it does not use the mouse and I can't see how to get at anything to try and repair it without a working mouse. I can use te keyboard but can't work out how to do anything usefull without the mouse.
I have tried plugging the mouse into deifferent USB ports without success.
I tried to reinstall the latest OSX update CD I have which boots OK and then lets me use the mouse (not a hardware fault) but when it gets to selecting the disk it says that it is the wrong language and will not let me select the hard drive. So I can't reair it to the previous working version.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Paul, and welcome to the discussions:
I suspect the source of your trouble is Norton. I'm not going to argue the merits of having anti-virus software on a Mac: if you're more comfortable with it than without, then go ahead and use it. BUT, always disable Norton when you're running software updates.
That said, you could try booting into Safe mode, then running Disk Utility. Also, go into System Preferences and open the International pane to check which language has priority. If "English" isn't at the top, move it to the top.
Or, if there isn't anything of importance stored on the iMac, boot from the install disk, and at the first opportunity go to the Install menu at the top of the screen. Launch Disk Utility and erase the hard drive. Then quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation.
    Good luck,
    Andrew

  • Macbook has "killed" 3 batteries in a row

Hi, my first post here. I have a macbook 2 ghz 1st gen that has just killed my third battery. This only 2 months after apple sent me a replacement, so i doubt its a problem with the batteries themselves. It is no longer covered by warranty so i am hoping this can be solved in some way. After left unused for a couple of weeks the battery indicator is X-ed out and it says "no batteries available". Mind you, this is the THIRD time this exact thing has happened. Ive tried resetting smc and also every other thing on the support site. What to do? i could always get a cheap replacement battery on ebay but i am sure that will be murdered in a month or two as well. any ideas anyone?

  • HT4623 iOS upgrade has killed my iPad, it won't start anymore.

I just accepted the iOS 7.0.2 upgrade and my iPad has died. All I get is an iTunes logo mid screen with plug/lead graphic and an arrow pointing to the logo.
I've tried all the buttons and even tried a reset, holding both down for 10 seconds, but it's as dead as a Dodo. I'm really wishing I hadn't agreed to this upgrade, can anyone help please?

I know the symbol means it's required for the upgrade to complete it needs to be hooked into iTunes to have it send off information.  The computer must be connected to the internet and upon seeing that symbol the iPad has to be connected to the computer.  If that doesn't work what I was honestly do is set the iPad down and let it kill its own battery and then the next day plug it in to the computer and listen to it for the sound of a connected device and let it power itself on.  If those don't work then you will have to take it to an Apple Store to have it unlocked.
@Custom17 I would have been able to answer that for you, or at least give you the same answer they're going to give you.  The reason it "jumps" all over the place has to do with the spatial effects built into the iOS.  When the lockscreen is on and you tilt the phone you should see the lockscreen moving (I found the factory "Starry Sky" lock screen is the best example of this.  The operating system works with layers building on it so it can manage the different applications going, think wedding cake, so something happening in the background or a wallpaper that doesn't agree with the OS is going to cause little jerks like that.  The black square can also be attributed to this, and both issues should be fixed quickly we all hope.
