10.6.4 update need 5GB? Won't download

I keep getting a message to upgrade Snow Leopard to 10.6.4 but when I try to update, I get this message:
Your hard disk does not have enough space.
You need 5.83 GB of available space to download and install the updates. To increase available space, remove files from your startup disk, and then try again.
On the main software update screen, it says that "Mac OS X Update Combined" only needs 934.7 MB. What is the other 4GB about?
I have jumped through hoops to get only about 2GB free on my drive. (Mostly since iPhoto took over all my photos and now I can't move them.)

Less than 10GB of free space is rather dangerous and places the likelihood of not being able to update or write out a valid directory or backup directory as well as changes to files and journal, and then you can't boot. Think of taking the card catalog away and then try to find a book, only the books have been moved.
There may be other updates as well.
If you haven't been making backups or repairing your drive, now is the time. A drive to offload files to one partition, a 2nd partition for TimeMachine, maybe a smaller 3rd partition with just OS X on it that you can boot from.
I am pretty sure that there was a time when an update would be just gone on its merry way, and resulted in an unbootable computer and even more trouble and worse off.
You can find instructions and hard drives to upgrade, spare external case for old drive. I'd look for new internal drive, use your existing drive as backup system, and a new backup drive for TimeMachine and clone your system.

  • How can I get my safari 5.1.10 to download the java update so I won't continue to get notices that my browser is out of date and I need to download the update, which then won't download.  Cannot view anything in youtube or most other places.

Jeez.  Trying to view items in youtube.  I keep getting a blacked out picture telling me my browser is out of date and I need to download the update.  I do that and then it doesn't connect so I'm back at square one.

Hi MiMattheMac, you probably won't have any problems but just be aware upgrading from Snow Leopard to anything later is a big leap. Old, PowerPC - only programs won't work, for example, and even more recently developed programs won't work if their developers have not been updating them for recent OS X versions.
If you haven't made a backup of your Mac yet, and you consider the information on it important, please consider doing that. It is the only practicable way to "undo" an OS X upgrade should you want to. Merely having a backup seems to preclude the need to ever use it.
If the information on your Mac is not important to you, upgrading to Mavericks is even easier since you can completely erase the Mac first.
In any event let the download complete.
If this raises any concerns about installing it, and you need to ask questions to alleviate those concerns, you can just close this window when it eventually appears:
The 5 GB downloaded file will not be deleted and will remain available until you actually install Mavericks. You can do that at any time convenient for you.

  • App updates in iTunes won't download

I have downloaded the new Lion and I really like it, however, I'm having issues trying to update my apps in iTues.  I downloaded the new iTunes right after I installed Lion.  When I launch iTunes, it shows I have 3 apps that have updates available but when I try to execute the "download all free updates", it won't connect to get the updates.  Bug?

I had the same problem yesterday *before* updating to Lion.  Maybe it's an Apple server problem.  They are a tad busy now
Just tried again and still could not download 21 updates.

  • Updates for App won't download - not enough access privilege - Err = -5000

I can't update any of my iPhone Apps thru iTunes. I get the following message
"There were problems downloading some purchased items.
For more information on the items that could not be downloaded, click below.
There was a problem downloading “FastFood - Top Restaurant finder app”. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.
Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again."
On the Downloads screen I see the following message. "stopped (err = -5000)"
I can update the Apps thru the iPhone, but not thru iTunes. Didn't have this problem until I upgraded to iTunes 9. Also every time I start iTunes it asks for my password. Any ideas how to fix this.?

Thanks but it's still not working. Also every time I start iTunes it asks for my password. I also have my iTunes library on an external hard drive though iTunes 8 had none of these problems. Another problem I have is that the screensaver no longer sees my album artwork even though iTunes still displays it. Not sure if I should try moving my iTunes library back to my boot drive.

  • I currently have 3.6.13 version but get update alert that won't download.

I have gotten two update alerts for security from Firefox in the last two weeks that never download. I have waited for over an hour and then just cancel. I don't want to miss out on a security update that is important.

I was so happy when I got a second MB of memory on my XP laptop, but I understand that not everyone can do it...
I don't know whether anyone has recently compared browsers to see which perform best with limited memory available. You might have to test for yourself.
If you are still running IE7, have you tried IE8?
If you haven't tested Google Chrome, you could give it a try.
By the way, if there are specific performance issues such as slow startup, slow page loading, etc., please list them so you can get suggestions on those.

  • Why when I update Adobe it won't load any higher than 25 or 30%?

Anytime I try to upload the new Adobe Flash Player Update, the installer won't download any further than 25% or 30% through.
And this annoys me a lot because now it is impossible for me to view any videos, and I think I may not have access to some certain web sites anymore because of that (e.g.: my school's portal).
    This gets me very angry
I just want to get it fixed.
P.S.: I am a MacBook user, I do not know if that influences anything, but it may...
    So please help!!!

    Hello,
This morning we resolved a problem that prevented Flash Player installations from completing for some of our Macintosh users.
If you encountered this problem, please delete any previously downloaded Flash Player installer and either:
Download the installer again from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer, OR
Download the stand-alone installer posted at the bottom of the http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-mac.html in the ‘Still having problems’ section.
If the behaviour reproduces, please clear the browser's cache and try downloading again.
    Thank you.

The first generation Intel-based Mac's were released in January 2006.
Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
If you go to the Apple menu & "About this Mac" this will tell you what type of processor you have:

You need to upgrade OS X.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Have you tried restarting the iPad or resetting it and then try to update?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This should not matter - but at this point you might as well try this as well. Close all apps, restart the iPad and then try to update again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button. Restart the iPad.

I fixed it by going through a few steps using iTunes while hooked to my computer.

You must close Firefox to install the update after it is saved to your hard drive. Follow the instructions below.
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash. Both must be installed and updated on Windows systems. In Firefox it would show as Shockwave Flash in your plug-ins, if you had it installed.
*an ActiveX version for IE only
*a plug-in version for Firefox and most other browsers
#'''Install or Update the [[Managing the Flash plugin|Flash]] plugin''' to the latest version.

#*If you do not have the current version, click on the "Player Download Center" link on the "'''Download and information'''" or "'''Download Manual installers'''" below
#*After download is complete, exit Firefox
#*Click on the installer you just downloaded and install
#**Windows 7 and Vista: may need to right-click the installer and choose "Run as Administrator"
#*Start Firefox and check your version again or test the installation by going back to the download link below
