10.6.8 Freezes Mac Pro

Guys,
Hopefully someone can help!
My Mac Pro has worked flawlessly for over 2 years BUT the latest 10.6.8 upgrade is creating a nightmare for me - the machine randomly hangs (not always the same program), sometimes it won't even empty the trash unless I powerdown hard reset from power button - disconnect power and then restart. I have verified the startup disc, checked permissions, closed everything down that I can from within activity monitor and still it refuses to be stable. I am about to try setting up a new user account to see if that helps but, as I tearing my hair out, I was looking for pointers that anyone might have? My boot drive is an SSD from Intel -
Model:          INTEL SSDSA2M160G2GC   which has never caused any problems. If anyone needs more specific info please ask. This is a very bad joke as it stands and I just can't work reliably.

I was having this "freeze" issue on an older MAC I decided to resurrect: MAC PRO A1186, Snow Leopard 10.6.8, 4g ram, 500gb HD.
After many attempts: fresh install of OS, replace PRAM battery, Rest NVRAM, repair disk permissions, turn off TimeMachine, turn off SpotLight, and a few more....
I finally had success in a simple obvious way: The previous owner had 4 dual-DVI video cards installed. They weren't optimized in setup. I pulled out 3 of them, left Video Card 1 in the machine. Issue solved! Running well now.

  • Mac Os 10.6.8 Crash and video freeze, Mac Pro

    Hi,
I just installed Mac OS 10.6 on my old Mac Pro, early 2009 (8 gib of Ram installed). I still have my old Mac OS10.5.8 on another internal boothable disk.
It went well the first day or so but now I'm experiencing some major video problems: picture of the desktop keeps freezing, videos are crashing in Firefox 30 with Flash 14 plugin, etc. I have 2 internal identical video cards and 2 separate monitors (NVIDIA-GT120). Here is a picture of what's happening:
I have installed upgrade for FireFox and Flash Player plugin 14.
I've tried to deactivate Flash option for "Accelerated": nothing is changing, the problem is still there.
Everytime a have a window that I move from one monitor to another smear and freeze all over on both monitors.
I have QuickTime 7 and QuickTime for mac OS 10.6. I want to keep my older version because I have Quicktime Pro.
Where should I start, I'm no expert, thank you in advance to explain it  to me in a simple manner if you answer to that post.
    Please help,
    Thank's!

Thank you for answering so promptly,
I already made a backup with TimeMachine of my new and original files of Mac OS 10.6 system.
May I point out that I've just installed Mac Os 10.6 as an upgrade of  Mac OS, from 10.5. I have now Mac OS 10.5 on one boothing disk and Mac Os 10.6 on another boothing disk. I can wether rebooth on one or the other. I upgraded to my new Os from a clone copy of 10.5 to 10.6 on a different disk: I'm aware that my new Mac OS may be not be as clean as it should be.
I also did all the operations you where mentionning such as disconnecting all non essential peripherals (even my main monitor) then power it up again. I also reboothed in "Safe Mode" and started again in normal mode afterwards. I've even zapped the "P RAM". I even did a "Repair Permissions with "Dislk Utilities". Nothing of that nature have resolved the various issues that I metionned in my previous Post.
"Isolating an issue by using another user account"
Thank you for the link, I shall read it carefully and thoroughly. Yes, I have tried to logged-in as a new user before your Post. I  think this solution helped afterwards.
I don't use these options often, I'm the only user and I'm not that familiar with all these options. I've tried to share some folders or files and also tried to setup an automatic password but I was not that very succesfull. As this article is mentionning: the main idea is to "check if  the Mac OS is behaving as expected" in a new user account.
The answer to that is a positive "yes" and I did regain a better control of my Mac OS new system afterwards.
I did not understand at first your expression "If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work". Reading a little about it, I think it has to do with an "iCloud feature to set up a network of Mac computers that you cant then access remotely". I don't have an iCloud connection/account installed/set-up. I only expremimented with that option once or twice many years ago with my iPod so, I,m not familiar with that option.
"Deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer"
Since I'm not a newbie on the Mac, I know how "Third Party's Applications/utilities" may really mess up an OS and make it behave in unusual ways sometime... I did find some of them installed in the menu that where messing up my new Mac OS. I deleted/deactivated them completly and reinstalled them one by one, carefully reboothing my Mac between each new installation. Some upgrades where installed for some.
Question about User Account vs. System's Files
Can I delete certain presets and/or preference files only stored in my "User Account" but should I never do this with files stored in the "System Folder" or the "Main Library"? Sorry, I'm an "Older Guy" and I'm used to older versions of Macs... Thank you for suggesting any good updated documentation on that matter.
Which Quicktime to use with mac OS 10.6: 7.6.6 or 7.7?
This is not clear at all on Apple's Web Site. I've downloaded and installed both. Maybe this is my problem. I wish Apple would more clear about it for those like me who want to use Quicktime Pro: 7.6.6 for Mac Os 10.6 and 7.7 for Mac Os 10.5???
    As for now...
My system is behaving better and it' also much more stable now, thank you! All the suggested steps have been made to to resolve certain issues.
    But not all...
I've still have the problem with QuickTime 7 and Flash 14 plugin when I browse and watch certain videos on the Web after a certain time. It's still very annoying when it's starts: I get an all smeared up display of my desktop afterwards (as shown in the above example in my first post). Restarting my Mac resolve's it for a a while only... It seem's that there's a problem with the Video Ram stored when Quicktime/Flash 14 are used? They freeze the System's process who is trying to erase the old data and prevent's it to replace/refresh it with new data on screen...
Thank you for your time and looking forward to read you,

  • Freezing Mac Pro with graphics glitch?

Over the last 3 weeks I have been having my mac pro freeze up and become unresponsive to any input requiring a hard reboot from the power button. This freeze is associated with the open window having a line through it. It is a thin horizontal line that occurs in various sections of the page. I have noticed this occur occasionally without a concurrent freeze as well. It stays put as the widow scrolls and otherwise works properly. This line can also occur in the desktop. To me it sounds like a graphics card problem. Has anyone had similar experience?

    Hi Gord,
first of: what graphics card is in your MP ?
If it is the ATI X1900, it might simply be that you have to clean the card and especially the fan from dust which has gathered over the time.
Shut down your MP, wait some minutes for it to cool down, open the side panel and look if the fan and/or the card itself is showing dust on and around it.
Clean the insides of your MP compressed canned air of all dust.
Reassemble your MP, boot up and see if it helps.

  • Freezing Mac Pro

    ello
    I have a mac pro laptop, MAC OS X Version  10.7.2 2.4 Ghz i5 4GB 1067 &  Lion (for +4 months)
I have been getting constant freeze ups from 1-4 times a day whether im on the internet (google chrome) or in the finder it will freeze. The only thing that works is the mouse moves but i cant click on anything and the keyboard is innactive. Im not sure from over heating, but its not too hot. I have had it for over a year and its been happening for a little over a month. I have a external hard drive but it is rarely connected into it and there is usually never anything connected with the USB. I did some research but nothing seemed to fix the problem. I tried to verify the disk and do a repair in Disk Utility but it said its fine and nothing is wrong. Also i dont have a warrenty so dont punish me lol.
Please is there anything i can do?
    Please & Thank you!
    MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Curiously as you posted this, I have also just posted regarding my machine  a 13'' with similar to what you are describing with the same conditions set, i.e. nothing plugged in only the power cord, external drive not plugged in. In the past with this problem I have also tried the disk utility and came up with the same results, yet using the internet, quite regularly now the machine freezes and nothing I know will force a quit other than turning off and resetting SMC hoping it doesn't happen again, but it does every time. Similarly, I also do not have a warranty, having had the machine for over a year, where the problem never occurred.

  • SSD Freeze Mac Pros? 2009 3.33 Nehalem

Are there any know problems using SSDs with this version of Mac Pros? I am using 2 Crucial (256GB M225 SSD Part #:CT256M225), 1 drive for OSX and 1 drive for Win7. The machine consisently locks up using Time Machine in the middle of backups and consistently slow when doing disk writes. I have the latest firmware installed on both drives. The Win7 drive seems to work much faster and I have even swapped drives to make sure that it wasn't drive specific. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you erase files on any drive, only the directory entry is cleared. The actual data blocks are unchanged. With a Hard Drive, this is generally not a problem, because the minimum that can be written is one sector/block, historically 512 Bytes. To modify a block, you re-write the entire block.
With a Solid State Drive, that uncleared old data presents an impediment to fast operation, because the smallest block the drive can write is quite large (4K or larger), and you must literally perform an agonizingly slow read-modify-write cycle to change it. If the rest of the block were cleared, the write could be done with a fast destructive write, and would go much faster.
So one way to improve the performance of these drives is to clear out all the old data from time-to-time, and zero out any unused blocks. I use a third-party utility to de-fragment (which by itself does NOTHING for SSD performance) followed by "erase free space with Zeroes". This increase the likelihood that the next bunch of data written can be placed in a large empty disk block without the need for slow read-modify-write cycles.
Remember that if you run Disk Tests to check the performance before and after, you have left all sorts of deleted files all over your drive. These should be removed before proceeding to production work.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Xeon Freezing when I use any software

Can Anyone Help me, I have a serious freezing issue with My Mac Pro, Everytime I use any software it just Freezes on my ie IDVD, I tried Instaling a new OS System, and repalaced a new Hardrive but with no joy, I'm Guessing its the graphic card now but I dont want to waste anymore money until I'm sure.
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 SDRAM used to give me dual screen display until the right side failed so now I'm only using one screen, also everytime I'm displaying a video their are thin random lines and a bit of screen display distortions before it eventually freezes on me.
    Please Help

Mac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one.

  • Mac Pro keep freezing and powering off itself

I have a Mac Pro 2008. For weeks now, it will start, work for plus minus 4 minutes and freeze or go off itself.
There is no authorised maintenance in my country. Has someone experience the same before ? Have tried all reset, etc..
Does it has to do with the power supply ? It is connected via a UPS.
    PLEASE HELP.

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

  • System-wide freeze when Time Machine begins back up - Mac Pro 10.7.5

I  have recently upgraded my MacPro Intel Early 2008 to Lion 10.7.5 on an external drive. Overall this nice fresh install has been working very well. The problem is that every 2 hours Time Machine starts its automatic back up and then ...
    A) Music playing on Spotify stops
    B) Curser freezes
    C) Application switching freezes
    D) Current app stops working
This freeze typically lasts about 15 to 30 seconds, or until the small incremental back up is finished.
I have verified the cause using the Console and reading the activity. I read the log 4 times yesterday (it has been doing this since I upgraded a week ago) to confirm this activity. Usually the log reports the begin and finish of the backup with no activity in between, but in the freeze I just had there was activity in the middle relating to Spotify. That most recent log is shown below. For the record, nearly all of the log activity is something to do with Spotify unless I am doing some other system level process.
I have studied other threads, but the symptoms don't really match those, or I don't have the same suspect apps installed. I have run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on the Time Machine internal drive, and it appears ok. In energy settings the hard drive disks are NOT set to sleep when possible, but the computer will sleep after an hour of inactivity.
My Time Machine is getting large and using some 90% of the disc. I think I need to redo it because the old (10.5.8 & 10.6) and new system (10.7) inadvertantly wrote to the same TM backup. Thoughts on that?
Here is the last freeze (I truncated the IP addresses) ...  and thanks, I appreciate your help. L

Hi Hatter - thanks for the info, interesting. When making these upgrades, which I resisted for as long as possible, I needed to make it as quick and painless, with "minimal" disruption in my work. It still took three weeks to plan and execute, plus it has been a week of fiddling - that is a lot of time to devote to computer maintenance. I kept the original system as a back-up in case things really went south. Also I need 10.5 because I have several active legacy client web sites in GoLive CS2, which I tried in 10.6, but it did not run well.
I agree that doing things off the internal drives is faster to operate, but my approach was prudent. Later I can swap those around. My external 10.7 drive is a WD My Passport Studio, and has had no problems (except the sucker runs pretty hot). I considered the SSD but the price is still high: NewEgg, internal 500GB regular drive today is $60 - 75, 500GB SSD is $340-370. That is a pretty big difference in a small business. I am maxed out on RAM, so that helps a lot.
One last thing though, for the Adobe Creative Suite the scratch discs are the internal drives, so it still runs fast in that sense. Fast is relative ya know, I remember programs taking 40 and 50 seconds to launch, now Photoshop is 19, barely time to drink some coffee.
I have bought a number of UPS over the years, including replacement batteries. It has been expensive frustration, because in a real emergency they seldom do what they promise. In Colorado there are big thunderstorms every summer, and I field tested them a number of times - but was never happy with the protection. Dollar for dollar, investing in a whole house (or whole office) surge arrester at the main utility panel offers protection for the equipment, with about the same amount of time to save your work (which in reality is about 1 second).
I had a ton of connection issues with Spotify working in 10.5, but I am happy to say those have completely gone away with this upgrade. I also like many of the refinements in Lion, such as the improved System Profiler.
Linc, I will will take a look at your suggestion, it is a little vaque. Am I looking for a perticular result ? I don't want to operate for too long with the firewall off.
I think my first step is getting the Time Machine figured out, that could be the whole issue.
Thanks guys for the input -- it is appreciated. L

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

If you just got it back and it isn't fixed or something else is wrong with it take it back and have them do the repair correctly.

  • Since installing Maverick my Mac Pro freezes at least once a day, any advice?.

Since installing OS Maverick my Mac Pro is freezing at least once a day. I can not access 'Force Quit' via shortcut and have to force a shutdown. This has occured when using Firefox, so i tried Safari and Chrome, freezes using all three. It has happened while use software as well eg, Photoshop and Word.
I have installed and run AVG Anti Virus and done a full system check to ensure that there was no virus etc.... all was clear.
I am assuming that it is a bug within Maverick as i experienced none of these problems prior to its installation.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues and does anyone have any advice on prevention?

Firstly, uninstall any anti-malware software. It isn't needed and could cause your problem. Also, avoid using Chrome which can also cause problems. Never use more than one browser at a time. Using three is asking for disaster.
I've been using Mavericks on all my computers and have had no problems, so what you describe is unlikely to be a bug. Start by uninstalling the AV software using their uninstaller. Disconnect all third-party peripherals. Then try the following:
    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 freezes my keyboard and mouse on my Mac Pro

I own a Mac Pro (Late 2009), 2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 3GB memory 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB graphics card.
Ever since the latest Yosemite upgrade (10.10.2), my computer will boot up fine, but within a minute or so, the mouse and keyboard are no longer responsive. The computer still runs in the background—Google Drive updates, browser windows open, the shutdown window pops up when I press the power button—but I can't move the mouse or make the keyboard work.
The keyboard is wired, but the problem persists whether I plug it into a different USB port or not. I have tried both my Bluetooth mouse (a brand-new Logitech Anywhere MX) and an older corded Magic Mouse, but neither works. I've unplugged the Bluetooth dongle for the MX to see if that's causing the problem and tried the Magic Mouse in other USB ports, also to no avail.
Starting the computer in Safe Mode eliminates the freezing, so I suspect the problem is not a fatal or unfixable one.
How can I trace the source of this problem? I haven't found others having similar issues.
    Thanks in advance!

    You are most welcome.

  • Mac Pro keeps freezing & no longer Shuts Down properly

    Hya.
Im using a Mac Pro in work (Mac Os 10.5.8. with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) . One day while doing a "Save as" in a program, the program froze/became unresponsive. In the Force Quit tab, it says "not responding", so i click force quit on it. It closes the window ive been working on and i get the message that the program has closed, BUT in the Force Quit tab, it still shows it listed and "not responding" next to it. It is also showing as running in the dock still. So obviously i cant restart this program, because its unresponsive. I have to shut down the computer, it shuts down everything else, but gets stuck trying to close down this frozen application, so it doesnt shut down the computer and i have to just switch the computer off.
I thought maybe it was just one program, but its litterally any program, could be safari if i say...click a box in facebook, or sendspace where it asks to search my computer for a file, if i ask it to do this, then the program freezes. It seems to mostly happen when i ask the computer to search for something i guess. "Save As" in most programs. Or if i click to import an image into a program, then bam, freeze.
Sometimes even "Finder" freezes and i have to just switch the computer off.
I generally get about 20-25mins without it happening, that is if im not heavily "saving as" or importing things, or asking the computer to do anything "tough".
Also, if one program freezes, and i ignore it and keep using another program, within a few minutes the next program im using freezes.
Some of the things ive tried are killing the running program in the Terminal application, and trying to quit the process in the Activity Monitor application. Neither work in closing the frozen program.
Ive used Disk Utility to see if there are any problems with the disk and there are none. We also bought DiskTools Pro and it also sees no problem with the hardware.
Originally i had something like 40gb on my desktop, i thought this might be slowing things down, but ive cleared it to nothing on the desktop and the problem continues.
I know I could reinstall the operating system, but i just dont like the idea of having to put everything back in its proper place again, and files "linking" up to their original place.
Not sure if this ties in with the problem, but we have an external hardrive plugged in which used to automatically sync up with time machine. This no longer works, and havnt been able to Back Up since the problem started.
Anyone have any idea what could be the problem before we have to send it off to get repaired?
    Thanks in advance!

    that is why my approach
    clone your system
be ready to restore if needed
    don't rely on Disk Utility
have an emergency boot drive / a working clone
    keep data on another drive
    spare extra drives
probably Disk Warrior has been rated #1 for over 10 yrs to rebuild directory
you should never need to reinstall, but you do need backups and how to use them

  • Is this creative suite or leopard causing my mac pro to freeze, quit and not sleep?

I hav recently bought a high end mac pro and leopard and I am lucky if I get 30 minutes before the whole system freezes. Tried re-installing in a different hard drive on the pro - same problem. If I put the computer to sleep, 80% of the time when I return, it has shut down. Actions in CS3 are deleted. Everything is a bit random and I can not work it out. Running disk utility, from the computer and disk produces this:

    """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" on Library
