10.6.8 "infected"?

Been using 10.6.8 for years, no problems. Recently I'm seeing the Beachball soon after start-up, nothing shows in Force Quit window, suspicious Anonymous Process (need to note PID) comment after doing a Forced Shutdown then Reboot out of Single-user Filecheck.
If I check Activity Monitor at start-up I see a MDS function with a large CPU %. Trying to do an Inspect gives me password window then Beachball.
Did a DiskWarrior directory rebuild not too long ago, and Permissions verify thru Disk Utility running off another, maintenance hard drive.
I'm wondering if somehow I have a compromised OS now that Macs have become so much more popular with all the iPhones & iPads out there, to say nothing of actual computers....
Where the heck do I begin to look for suspicious activities / files / processes?

Thanks Lanny, that's a comfort knowing MDS isn't malicious.
Spotlight's never seemed to cause the "beachball" before so I doubt that's the cause of what I'm seeing.
Running FSCK a couple more times seems to have improved things markedly.
Also found thread(s) re: Flashback trojan with Terminal commands given which gave "no such item" as result so there's comfort in that also.
Still, will try to become more adept at ferreting out current threats & whether present....

  • I opened the attachment on a malicious email in error on my IPad and have been informed by the genuine company that it will download malware software. Is this possible on my IPad or is there a way of running a security scan to see if it has been infected?

I received an email that I now know to be malicious and inadvertently opened up the attachment on my IPad that I've been informed will download malware or a virus. Can my IPad be infected this way or does anyone know if there is a way of running a security scan to check if there is a problem? I do have the most up to date IOS software installed.

There is no anti-malware for iOS, at least none that actually does anything useful. The odds of getting any malware infection via an email attachment on an iOS device is quite low - practically non-existent. Unless you are seeing any issues, there isn't much to do, other than deleting the email and being more cautious in the future.

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse.  It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book.  I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month.  It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone.  Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word.  The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer.  It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have.  The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up.  If it pulls up at all.  I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean.  I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks.  I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either.  I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me.  I do remember when I believe my computer became infected:  I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected.  I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late.  I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all.  I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer.  It refuses to uninstall.  The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible.  If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,
    Beth

  • Windows 7's Infection Rates Five Times Lower Than Windows XP

"Windows 7's marketshare continues to grow at a steady pace at the expense of its two older siblings, Windows Vista and XP, according to the data from StatCounter. In terms of global usage, Windows XP is at 46.44%, Windows Vista at 12.5%, and Windows 7 at 32.64%. Good news for everyone, right? Well, if these adoption numbers aren't convincing enough, perhaps this might convince you (or your technologically challenged peers) - Windows 7 has the lowest infection rates per quarter amongst Microsoft's currently supported operating systems."

I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435
The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • I lost all of my Itunes music because of an infection that required them to wipe my computer.  I am trying to get the music back from multiple sources.  What I have recovered is a mess. Albums are mixed or songs not grouped as album. Help?

My computer got infected with some terrible virus.  I contacted the manufacturer and they said the only thing to do was wipe the whole thing. I could not back it up bec this mess?ause it would include the infection. I have been trying to recover the lost music from several different places.  A friend tried to help me by putting all of his music on my computer from his external hard drive. That was very nice of him but now it is a terrible mess. The recovered songs are not grouped into albums correctly.  Some albums are mixed - every other song is from the other album.  Some songs are listed separately and not grouped as an album.  I tried to ask iTunes to find album art work and it has been running that for over 48 hours. Is that possible?  When I try to stop it I get a message that says I will lose all the data.  I admit that I am not very tech. savvy and I really don't know what I am doing.  It took me more than 20 years to make that collection and I am heart broken. Do you have any ideas about how I start to fix

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.

  • Firefox 4 crashes after windows recovery virus /malware infection

Hello My computer was infected by the "windows recovery " virus/malware when running Firefox 4 with administrator right user . I could get rid of the virus/malware using antivirus and antimalware sw ( superantispyware, antimalwarebytes, spybot and avast ) . Currently , no viruses or malwares are reporetd on my system . Still, when starting firefox.exe , the error message " firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close " is triggered and , although firefox starts and runs OK; it will close whenever a send/don't send option is taken on the error message . If I rename the Firefox.ex exe program into another name, Firefox runs OK and the error message is not triggered .
I have had superantispyware support run an analysis tool on my system and their feedback was that the infection, if any, can only be viral . I had AVAST run in F8 safe mode and no viruses are reported any longer after desinfection of the system where a couple of exes created by the malware were found/deleted . I tried uninstall/reinstall Firefox 4 and 3, but the problem remains . Also, I have looked for a crash report in the documents and settings folder but finds none . Last, I also tried to start firefox.exe in safe mode but it will not start ( it will well start if I rename firefox.exe into another name )
Thanks beforehand if you can suggest something to solve this .
    Best regards Pierre W

Does it help if you create a new profile or uninstall and reinstall Firefox?
If you reinstall Firefox then be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove possibly left over files in it.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
    See:

  • I attempted to download the "lastest version" and it infected my laptop with a virus

Last week I was given a prompt from Firefox that I needed to update to the latest version 4.01 and I did so and after it finished downloading my computer prompted me that it was an infected file. My computer has now crashed several times and is infected with viruses. I have tried cleaning and scanning my computer but it keeps shutting off my Microsoft Windows defender and firewalls. I also attempted to uninstall the 4.01 Firefox and it did and installed google chrome til I could get this situated with you guys and it worked but then today it crashed yet again and now the 4.01 Firefox will NOT uninstall off my computer and it will NOT let me install any other web browser. I do not know what to do about this and I definitly DO NOT have the money to bring my computer in and get it fixed. I have talked highly of firefox and have enjoyed using it as my web browser with all the awesome features and add ons you guys have to offer. Now I no longer have any of that and a lap top that barely works. I have already lost all my files and pictures that I CAN NOT get back.

  • How can I determine if my iMac is infected with Malware.  Internet is very slow at times.

Some time ago I opened a link in an email from a friend and later found out that his email address had been hijacked.  The site the link took me to seemed innocuous, but ever since it seems that from time to time that my internet connection is very slow, as if there is not enough band width.  Is it possible that my computer is infected with some sort of malware?  How can I determine that?  If it is infected how can the malware be removed?

    Here is the report.

I clicked on a link in a email from a hacked email account and since then my internet connection runs very slow at times.  I am concerned that my iMac may be infected with some sort of Malware

  • GoDaddy claims my Mac is infected

Today I received an email from GoDaddy with the following information in it:
"Your hosting account had uploaded infected content, which we have removed. Please scan your local computer with current virus definitions prior to uploading any further content as future uploads of infected content can result in account suspension"
I only use one computer to attach/upload information to the GoDaddy site and it is a MacBook Pro running OS X.  I have never worried about anti-virus software so I have to admit I was very surprised when this email arrived in the Inbox.  The software for the website is DreamWeaver, which I know is cross-platform, but I have only ever used this MacBook Pro to upload content to the server.  Is it possible my GoDaddy account has been compromised?  I checked the website and it still looks fine.  Does anyone have any ideas on how I can "scan" my MacBook Pro and send the results back to GoDaddy to show that it is fine?
    Thank you,
    Book

Thank you for the comments.  I have downloaded and installed ClamXav on the MacBook Pro and it is currently running the scan.  I also have an voice mail from Go Daddy tech support with the call back number matching one of their phone numbers.  As soon as the scan is complete, I am going to call them directly and request more information.  I thought about the possibility of a hack, still haven't ruled it out, but the password would be hard to figure out, in my opinion.  Still, I am going to change the password as soon as I get the scanning and the phone call out of the way.  What I find odd about a possible hack, and not being a hacker maybe I don't see it, is that nothing has changed on the website.  I checked out the main page and all my subpages and they all look fine.  Now, I am not going to say there is not something going on behind the scenes, but I would think that the files/wording/pictures/something would have been changed if the site was hacked.  Am I being naive in my assumption?  I can accept that as fact if you guys feel that may be the case.  But for now, I will let the scan run then call GD tech support at the direct number from the website itself and see if I can get to the bottom of all this.  Once I have found a resolution, I will post it back here for reference.
    Thanks!

  • 100% CPU! HALP! w/ Win 8.1 Pro infected by malicious content that reoccurs even after a factory restart. I've tried near everything malwarebytes, win defender, I'm still too new to effectively use MMC, or GPEDIT.MSC,

Some form of malicious content is assaulting my PC's registrys, drivers, along with portraying as other Users, and programs. It's a constant struggle to keep my property, authority, permission under my control over security ownership of my files etc. I
have seen PUP and PUM files in scans, I'm still learning the different forms of malicious content, but I have a feeling there's male-ware, root-kit, and ad-ware that I haven't Identified. Even though my network is private, haven't even created a home-group,
and all my remote access is turned off, but I haven't ruled out someone still being clever enough to access my system/network remotely. I've tried to keep my computer as secure as possible, multiple passwords, and two-step verification I thought I was going
off the deep end when I started to suspect my SYSTEM profile had been compromised. I can't tell if it's a phony, or actually my system taking away everything until I literally cant do a thing on my computer.  I didn't want to remove any files that I shouldn't.
When ever I feel that I'm about to lose complete control over my PC I restore it to factory condition, it's about all I can do. Even after 5 restarts it's persistent. I"ve stopped short of using the more extreme programs like Anti-maleware tool Adlice,
RogueKiller, and Combofix. I've actually learned a lot about script, and IS no thanks to my computers new little friends. I've been dealing with this malicious content since december upgrading OS from 7 up to 8.1 has really been the only thing my computer
and I from being completely run over. Some newer up to date advice would be great, I don't want to use out of date or ineffective programs the instructions I've been following are sometimes several years, to at least months old. No point in waisting my time
if the information is irrelevant and out of date. I'll attach some of my reports, and the progams that I have/haven't used yet. I have several MS accounts, from XboX, college, and this old one I was contemplating on putting all three of them in an admin group,
making it more difficult to challenge my authority, or maybe just joining a workgroup/domain would also work. Last night I did use GPEDIT.MSC to disable inheratance, followed by a taking global ownership, if it I actually managed to get GPEDIT.MSC to can't
wait to get my hands I"m kind of enjoying myself though, it's been fun teaching myself IS I always wanted to learn how to use CMD script with proper syntax, I was starting the think that my only solution was to learn command prompt, but there may be a
newer programm that just might work. I've been using reginout, drivertoolkit, MBAM/backup/chameleon, ncleaner, cclearner, and many others. I've scanned but haven't put combofix, roguekiller, or Adlice to the grind stone, I'd probably do more harm not being
able to tell whats more benine for beneficial. Here is a link to the instructions that I was following https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/149492-pcregserviceexe-infection-pup-infections/ the members description was also very close to what I was
dealing with, he just had better luck with MBAM

  • Are Power PC based Macs open to infection by Flashback?  And if so how do I find out if it's on my G4?

Are Power PC Macs open to infection by Flashback?  And If so, how do I check to see whether my G4 has been a victim?  All the scanners that I've seen are for Intel based Macs only.

I would run Terminal, then COPY the command shown in Step 2 (from the web site link).  PASTE it in Terminal (to ensure you don't mistype something) and hit Return.  If you do NOT get "... does not exist" message, don't do the anything else in the procedure.
If you DO get the "... does not exist" message, then COPY the command shown in Step 8.  PASTE it in Terminal and hit Return.  If you do NOT get "... does not exist" message, don't do the anything else in the procedure.
If you DO get the "... does not exist" message, then your Mac is clean.
The commands in Steps 2 and 8 can do no harm, because nothing is being changed.  Some of the other commands for "removal" in the procedure do make changes.  So if Steps 2 and 8 indicate your Mac is clean, that's good and you're done.
If they indicate otherwise, there may be a problem.  You can ask additional questions here about what to do.
FYI - I just ran the procedure on my Power Mac G5 running Leopard, and I got the expected "... does not exist" messages after entering the commands in Steps 2 and 8.

I just installed Avast on my iMac. It did a full scan and found ( Win32:MalOb-C[Cryp] )
I deleted the 30 infections and 7 warnings. I hope this fixes the problem 4/30/13
Sorry, but that's Windows only malware, so unless you are having Windows issues, it's not going to solve your problem, whatever it is.
I got this from an email and I changed my email password, but it surfaced again
    before I did this scan.
Be careful how you deal with infected e-mails as you can easily corrupt the mailbox index and cause a few other issues, including leaving that e-mail on the server.  Always delete e-mails from within your e-mail client.
