10.6.8 update destruction

Hmm, it seems someone has no sense of humour and has taken such exception to a tongue-in-cheek joke that I have been blacklisted from my own post.
Thanks Stedamn (real nice name!)
Having had my MBP completely disabled by the Software Update OS10.6.8 update I rebuilt it with a Time Machine backup and then downloaded the10 .6.8 Combo updater that many advised following the flood of complaints from other unsuspecting Mac owners whose computers had been trashed to varying degrees by this rogue OS update.
The result of that 10.6.8 Combo install is a completely disabled computer once more that cannot boot up. Just the same grey screen full of geekspeek. So it is now busy reloading the same Time Machine backup.
Whatever the holier-than-thous around here claim it is clearly an extremely flakey, and iresponsible on Apple's part, release. I will skip it completely because as far as the comments suggest it does not include anything much other than Lion preparation stuff and I am not going anywhere near that potential train wreck with no solid OS install DVD.

Very constructive Barney.
As the MBP was yet again disabled trying the 10.6.8 update I decided to go right back to basics.
This time I erased the drive and installed 10.6 from the original disc. Then, without adding anything applied the 10.6.8 Combo update. Apparently no problem because at least it booted up.
The next step was to use Migration Assistant to import all Applications, Settings etc. from the Time Machine backup and ... Hey Presto ... it was screwed again!
So, now I have to find out if it is an Application or a user setting/preference which is causing this probme and that means migrating one section at a time. I think however first that I will remove Parallels from the equation.
Although that is easier said than done because Parallels leaves traces behind that cannot be removed without wiping the drive. More evidence that Bill Gates should have been drowned at birth.
Since Time Machine backups cannot be messed with this new attempt will entail rebuilding the MBP from the TM backup, uninstalling Parallels and then making a separate TM backup from which to restore after wiping the drive and reinstalling from scratch again.
Generally speaking I have a very troublefree and productive time with my Macs but suddenly both the MBP AND the iMac have been beset with weird and time consuming stupid issues.

  • Update Failure; OS Destruction

While my iMac was installing the latest OS Update, it froze. The progress bar animation stopped and remained in the same place for over an hour. I held the power button and shut it down. Now it constantly asks me to restart every time I turn it on; I cannot get to the login screen or access any facet of the OS. Here is the message that is given: Version mismatch between kernel and cpu-m.
I am assuming there is no easy to resolve this problem... I am hoping that the simplest way to fix this is to use the OS reinstall disc that was included and wipe it down to factory settings, using my TimeMachine harddrive to reinstall everything (should I leave the external HDD plugged in during this process, or should I plug it in later when the OS installation asks for it?). Would this be the best thing to try?

    HI,
    First things first.
*"Now it constantly asks me to restart every time I turn it on"*
That's called a kernel panic. Go here for help to Resolve Kernel Panics
Boot from your install disk and check the startup disk for errors and available disk space.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
Make sure your iMac is ok and then if necessary, reinstall the OS and use TM.
Also, if you could update your profile and tell us which iMac you have, that would help. Click My Settings on the right side of this window. Thanks!

  • Update on 10.6.8 fails due to digital signature on update is missing

wanting to install the Parallels version 10 and it won't work on 10.6.8 version of my Mac OS so I learned how to go to the software update which indicates an update is available. When I go ahead and load the update it runs fine and then stops with a message that the Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update can't be saved. It says the digital signature on the update is missing or invalid.
I don't know if the digital signature is on my computer or the update? I would upgrade to a more recent version of the OS but don't know what will work.
    Can anyone help?
    Dan

Parallels 10 isn't compatible with 10.6 according to the web site.
    Mac Requirements
    Hardware:
A Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (Core Solo and Core Duo processors are no longer supported)
Minimum 2 GB of memory (4 GB of memory is recommended to run Windows 7 in a virtual machine or if your host OS is Lion)
About 850 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop installation
About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine
    Software:
OS X Yosemite 10.10 or later
OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 or later
Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 or later
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 or later
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.
Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X
    Mountain Lion
Note - Mavericks is no longer available.

  • Ok I know people are having this problem. I updated to the latest version of iPhoto and now I get the following:  "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable". Can someone please point me to a fix?

    This is super frustrating.
I tried to uninstall iPhoto and all related files and then reinstall but I keep getting the same result.
I have spent hours trying to fix this and nothing seems to work. I am pretty good with computers so I think this requires some expert help. I notice many people are stuck with this problem. Do I have to go and buy the disk from the store? How ironic that I was updating the software online so I could use photostream. Now the solution may be I need to go back to the "old school" way of doing things. Lucky I don't have a mac airbook. Lol.

Re-installing the app is unlikely to help because the problem is with the Library and not the application.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro and now it says I need to restart every time I turn the computer on.  It is on a grey screen.

I have not used my MacBook Pro for a few months and when I started it up did all the microsoft and system updates.  Now it will not turn on and it goes to a grey page that state "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button untilmitmturns off, then press the Power button again." I have done this several times and keep arriving at the same page.

OK, then there is little else to do other than to reinstall OS X.
Make sure you removed everything connected to the MBP including any USB devices.
If your Mac came with a System Install DVD, then insert it and hold the c key while starting your Mac. This will boot from the DVD instead of your internal disk.
If you find the grey screen reappears then it may not have restarted from the disc, so try again. You have to get past this step to do anything. If you can't, the problem may be a dirty or damaged DVD or an inoperative optical drive.
When it gets to the Mac OS C Utilities screen, select Disk Utility and repair your hard disk. Record any errors that it finds, since your problem may be due to a failed hard disk. If that is the case, the failure will probably arise again.
Then, reinstall OS X. Reinstalling is non-destructive to your user accounts or data.
If your Mac is running Lion, or Mountain Lion, you can boot OS X Recovery and perform all the above without a disc.
Read about OS X Recovery here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • IPHOTO Library file will not open after update of iPhoto 9.6.1

I am trying to open up my IPHOTO Library in IPHOTO 9.6.1 with not success.
My computer is a Mac (27-inch, Mid 2011), 2.7 GHZ Intel core i5 processor, 8 GB ram, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics card, 1TB Hard Drive.
My iPhoto 9..6.1 appears to be created on March 16, 2015 and was modified on March 20,2015 which I assume is from a security update 2015-003.
My iPhoto Library was created March 22, 2012 and was last updated March 1, 2015.  To the best of my knowledge, it has not been open since it was last updated.  Unfortunately there are no current backups to the file.
When I launch IPHOTO the screen shows a rotating sprocket then after a period of time I receive a message:
Your photo library is either in use be another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again.  If the problem persists, try rebuilding your iPhoto library,  to do this , quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed.  You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
When I follow this am left with four  items to chooses from:  repair permissions, rebuild thumbnails, repair database, rebuild database.  The first is selected and assume this is by default. I am not sure what the best choice is to select.  Secondly since i have no backup of the file and I am not sure the file is corrupted, I started trying to create  a copy on on an external drive however the file (192GB Size) new completes a copy routine. I considered a backup process which would take multiple hours.
    Looking for direction.

    1. make a back up. No matter how long it takes.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    2.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

This girl here found the fix:
How to Manually Fix Updates on Adobe Photoshop CS6 (from 13.0.3 to 13.0.6) on Mac with Retina Display |
Basically, all you have to do is update the Application Manager (if your installation was like mine, I was still on v.6... it's up to v.9 now.  Go here for the update: Adobe - Adobe Application Manager : For Macintosh : Adobe Application Manager and run it... when done, launch Photoshop and check for updates.
This is amazingly idiotic, I must add -- how does App Manager NOT update itself through the update process???

  • I downloded iphoto 11 9.2 and when opened it for the first time and the program started to update my iPhoto library the file got corrupted. That has happened in the two macs I have (both of them rather new and updated to last Lion version 10.7.2).

I downloaded Iphoto 11 9.2 from the apps store (was on iphoto '09 before version 8.x) and when opened it for the first time it tried to update my photo librery and ended up corupting it to the extreme that I had to get a backup from time capsule and downgrade my iphoto version. I spent yesterday 6 hours at the genius bar in an apple store and they were not able to provide me with any other solution. In the emantime, I have to forget about about photo streaming... Any idea, is this a bug that somebody knows how tp fix?

In fairness, this isn't an issue in iPhoto 11 but one in your Library. Some file or other in there is damaged and that's what causes the crash during the upgrade.

  • I cannot open itunes. I updated the software yesterday but it stopped working half way though use and now every time i try openeing it it comes up with the message 'allow programme to make changes to your computer?' and on clicking yes doesnt do anything.

On using my latop yesterday, i opened itunes and  it gave me the option to update to the new software, which i was happy to do. I went through all the stages on installing the software and it opened up for use.
On using the software to download new music, i found it was freezing quite a lot and just in general wouldnt work. I closed the prgramme after having to use task manager as it wouln't respond. I then re-opened the programme and it came up with the message 'Do you wish to allow this prgramme to make changes to your computer?' i automatically said yes and expected itunes to open however, it didn't. I ran through troubleshoot compatibility however the issue found said 'Incompatibe application' to which i didnt know what it meant.
I've tried everything to make it work. Re-starting the computer, going on unistalling the programme and repairing it but, nothings worked.
I dont want to unistall the programme because i dont want to lose my music. I need a way to fix the programme without unistalling it.
    Can anyone help??

I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.

  • Why can't I open photos after updating an iphoto Library on new computer?

I have saved a 13,000 photos from my old Mac onto a hard disc, and am now trying to import those photos onto a new Mac computer.
When I copied the 2012 iPhoto Library onto my new computer, a prompt came up to tell me that the Library needed to be updated in order to be used on this computer. So I followed the steps and it seems to have successfully updated itself. But see all the photos when I scroll through the Library... but, when I try to click to open it, I get a HAZARD sign -- triangle with a big exclamation mark.
Please, can someone advise how I get my old photos onto my new computer?
    Thanks. Corinna

That sign turns up when iPhoto loses the connection to the actual file.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • Can't access photo library after last update

I have a Macbook Air 13 and am running the most current Maverick (10.9.5) before Yosemite was released.
I take all updates as they arrive and are listed by AppStore.
After the last iPhoto update that came about the time Yosemite arrived I can no longer access my photo Library.
When opening iPhoto it give me a choice to upgrade my library or quit. So I tried to upgrade and after about 30 seconds iPhoto simply goes away.
I am traveling and can not do the large Yosemite upgrade, in case that is the issue, but need access to my photos.
When I plug in and sync my iPhone5S  (which is running the latest updates as well) it seems to sync but I have no way to import the photos.
I am guessing this is related to the last update but have no idea what to do in order to recover.
iPhoto 9.6 now show incompatible but I don't recall seeing this earlier.
I am running iTunes 12.0.1 and it can not access the photo settings. It just sits with the busy spinner.

iPhoto 9.6 only runs on Yosemite.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • ScreenUpdating=False fails to prevent screen updating, and causes bizarre behaviour

I have recently installed Office 2013 (MSO Standard 2013) on my (Win 7 Professional) computer.  During a brief transitional period, Office 2003 will remain on my computer.
I had been looking forward to running the many Excel VBA applications on Excel 2013, but am not only disappointed, but alarmed.  We are significantly dependent on over 50 business applications running in Excel VBA (many of which are complex,
and many of which I have developed), but we now find that seemingly one difference alone (though we may yet discover more) is rendering many of them virtually unusable.  That difference is the behaviour of the Application.ScreenUpdating method.
In Excel 2003, the ScreenUpdating method behaved intuitively, predictably and reliably.  It basically does what it says - all screen updating, except for the status bar, is frozen.  To allow users to peek at any updates, one would simply
set ScreenUpdating=True and at the appropriate point freeze updating with ScreenUpdating=False.  Now, in Excel 2013, we are instead finding behaviour which has to be described as bizarre, counterintuitive and destructive.  Essentially, what is happening
is that whenever another worksheet is activated, ScreenUpdating=False does not prevent screen updating - and for good measure, there are a number of other unpleasant side-effects.  I have spent many long hours searching through hundreds of forum posts
and testing workarounds - all without success.  I have seen many posts complaining about ScreenUpdating in Excel 2013, but not a single implementable solution.  Yes, I've seen the advice about replacing Select or Activate methods with objects, but
this workaround would not only be extremely costly and impractical in our case (it would require reworking tens of thousands of lines of code and would probably take many person months of unjustifiable work), it almost certainly wouldn't work.  (You'll
have to take my word on that.)  And all because ScreenUpdating=False doesn't really prevent screen updating any more!  I cannot accept that ScreenUpdating is working properly in Excel 2013, nor that its functionality is in any way acceptable.
The problems are best illustrated with a simple example.  I created this example to verify that the flickering was unrelated to the complexity of the business applications I referred to above.  In this example, there is a "master"
workbook named "ScreenUpdatingTest.xls".  This contains a single button on its only worksheet, and this button executes macro "TestScreenUpdating".  This macro turns screen updating off, then sequentially opens workbook AAA.xls,
workbook BBB.xls and workbook CCC.xls with a 3 second interval between each workbook being opened.  After 3 more seconds, it activates workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls and then turns screen updating on.  Along the way, it reports these actions in
the status bar.  One would expect that this would result in AAA, BBB and CCC being opened in the background, with the user seeing no changes on the screen apart from the status bar and the workbooks appearing in the task bar.  This is precisely what
    happens in Excel 2003.
By contrast, Excel 2013 seems to do absolutely nothing for about 12 seconds (even the task bar and the status bar remains unchanged), then, AAA, BBB and CCC can be seen to open (in maximized windows) in rapid succession.  The only message I see in the
status bar is the last one, "Switched back to ScreenUpdatingTest.xls."  Even more bizarrely, that there is a call to Msgbox "Hi" just before the Application.ScreenUpdating=True at the end of the subroutine - and this should be unrelated
to which workbook the focus end up with, right?  Wrong!  If Msgbox "Hi" is commented out, the focus ends up with CCC.xls - in other words, Workbooks(ThisWorkbook.Name).Activate seems to be ignored.  But if Msgbox "Hi" is
uncommented, the focus ends up with ScreenUpdatingTest.xls!  This is crazy, isn't it?
    Sub TestScreenUpdating()
    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
    Application.Wait Now() + TimeValue("00:00:03")
    Workbooks.Open ThisWorkbook.Path & "\AAA.xls"
    Windows("AAA.xls").Activate
    Application.StatusBar = "AAA.xls has been opened."
    'Excel 2003:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls is open in the task bar.
' The message that AAA.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    'Excel 2013:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls is >>>NOT<<< open in the task bar
' >>>NO<<< message that AAA.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    Application.Wait Now() + TimeValue("00:00:03")
    Workbooks.Open ThisWorkbook.Path & "\BBB.xls"
    Windows("BBB.xls").Activate
    Application.StatusBar = "BBB.xls has been opened."
    'Excel 2003:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls and BBB.xls are open in the task bar.
' The message that BBB.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    'Excel 2013:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls and BBB.xls are >>>NOT<<< open in the task bar.
' >>>NO<<< message that BBB.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    Application.Wait Now() + TimeValue("00:00:03")
    Workbooks.Open ThisWorkbook.Path & "\CCC.xls"
    Windows("CCC.xls").Activate
    Application.StatusBar = "CCC.xls has been opened."
    'Excel 2003:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls, BBB.xls and CCC.xls are open in the task bar.
' The message that CCC.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    'Excel 2013:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
    ' AAA.xls, BBB.xls and CCC.xls are >>>NOT<<< open in the task bar.
' >>>NO<<< message that CCC.xls has been opened appears in the status bar.
    Application.Wait Now() + TimeValue("00:00:03")
    Workbooks(ThisWorkbook.Name).Activate
    Application.StatusBar = "Switched back to ScreenUpdatingTest.xls."
    MsgBox "Hi"
    Application.ScreenUpdating = True
    'Excel 2003:
' I see workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls on the screen with no flickering.
' AAA.xls, BBB.xls and CCC.xls are open in the task bar.
' The message that we have switched back to ScreenUpdatingTest.xls appears in the status bar.
    'Excel 2013:
' Workbooks AAA.xls, BBB.xls and CCC.xls appear in rapid succession.
    ' When execution ends:
' If Msgbox "Hi" is commented out, the focus is with CCC.xls.
' If Msgbox "Hi" is uncommented, the focus is with ScreenUpdatingTest.xls.
    ' AAA.xls, BBB.xls and CCC.xls are >>>NOT<<< open in the task bar.
' The message that we have switched back to ScreenUpdatingTest.xls appears in the status bar.
    End Sub
Surely it is reasonable to expect that such functionality should remain consistent from one version to the next!  Our applications in Excel 2003 had a professional, elegant user interface, and they behaved predictably, intuitively and robustly.
With Excel 2013, this is utterly trashed, with flickering, unpredictable behaviour (who knows what will get the focus?) and inefficiency (things are so much slower when the screen updates).  With Office 2003 going out of support, vast numbers of people
in my company will be moving to Excel 2013 as Excel 2003 is decommissioned.  I imagine the same will be happening in many other companies.  We now find ourselves on the cusp of being dealt us a devastating blow due to ONE DYSFUNCTIONAL METHOD, and
we are desperate for a solution.  A solution would either have to restore the former Excel 2003 functionality of ScreenUpdating, or it would have to introduce a new method which really does turn screen updating on or off without exception.
    Please, HELP!
    -Peter

    Thanks for the input, Jim.
I don't think the Single Document Interface is contributing to the problem.  Since installing Office 2013, Excel 2003 has also inherited a Single Document Interface - yet while it behaves like a charm, Excel 2013 behaves ineptly.
Whatever the reasons for the problem, the fact is that this functionality is now broken - one might even say catastrophically broken - and some sort of resolution is essential.  It would be madness to allow something like this to have such a severe
    impact on business operations.
My call for help is still out there, as loud as ever!  BTW, I can send my example files, zipped, to anyone who might like to look at them.

See this: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/run_as_administrator.htm
*'''<u>NOTE for IE:</u>''' Firefox and most other browsers use a Plugin. IE uses an ActiveX version. To install/update the IE ActiveX version, same instructions as above, except use IE to download the ActiveX installer.
