10.8.2 Server: Ports not open

Hello
I try to configure a ML Server and want it to configured aas a mail server. So I configured DNS names, mail domains, Users and so on.
Now when I try to configure a mail client to receive mails via IMAP the server won't respond. So I tested all open ports on/to the server. Now I noticed that port 110 and 143 is not open. So any 1 knows how to open these ports in ML?
OS X 10.8.2 (Build 12C54) and Server 2.1.1 (Build 12S365)
Many thanks for any informations.
Dominique

If you're connecting from outside your network, the ports have to be forwarded on your router. Note also that some ISP's block incoming traffic on well-known ports unless you have a business account.

  • 10.3.9 problems with FTP server - port not open?

I have set up the ftp server in MacOSX Server 10.3.9 and I think the configuration is correct, but I am unable to access it from a client. When I check the open ports on the server from the client (running 10.4.10), ports 20 and 21 are not open, even though the firewall is not running. How do I open these ports, or start the server listening on them? The FTP server is running as far as Server Admin is concerned, although I have to say that I can't see a process in Activity Monitor with ftp in its name.

I think I might have got a bit farther with this problem, but this just gets me nearer to the problem, not to a solution.
When I stop the ftp service I get an error message in the console that says:
server servermgr_ftp: ftp config:Error:Unable to hup xinetd - pid file shows pid='(null)'
I believe that this means that Server Admin has tried to get xinetd to read its config file but since xinetd is not running (and hence no pid is available) it is unable to do this.
If I try and start xinetd from the terminal I get the following error message:
server xinetd[5484]: bind failed (Permission denied (errno = 13)). service = ftp
    server xinetd[5484]: 5484 {init_services} no services. Exiting...
I now know that xinetd is the process that (amongst other things) listens on port 20-21 for an attempt to establish an ftp session and then launches ftpd to service that connection. At least I think that is how it works! Or should work...

  • "500 Internal Server Error" not opening into explorer

I have problem in ORACLE BI while opening Presentation Services and BI publisher.
I installed MS Windows 2003 Server SP2, Internet Explorer 6.0, ORACLE10g R2 database and created a database MIS. Installed JDK 1.6 and ORACLE BIEE 10.1.3.4.1
When I open ORACLE BI Presentation Services or BI Publisher from menu it is giving
“500 Internal Server Error” not opening into explorer. Attached is the screen shot for your review.
    The log says
    OracleJSP: oracle.jsp.provider.JspCompileException:

    Caused by : java.lang.NullPointerException.
    All advice appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello Brahmeshwar
The defaulttrace error you are looking normally is just a warning, and can be simply ignored.
Please search the Exception ID which you are seeing in the page, like "005056A0354D001F000000650000100C0004904D0B0E33C7"
And check the detailed exception there.
And please check whether you are getting any issue when accesing other J2EE apps like http://<host>:<port>/useradmin  or /nwa.

  • Servermgrd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found

This issue was posted last fall, but no one had ever posted with a solution to it. About every 2 minutes in /var/log/system.log, I get the following message:
servermgrd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found
This is on an Xserve running 10.4.5. No printers are attached or will be. I'm not sharing any printers either.
Again, its just an annoyance, but why is something logging to system.log if its not actually a problem?

same prob here. really annoying. ever find the cure?

  • Cupsd's bootstrap server port not found

I've got both Samba and CUPS turned off at startup, yet I get this recurring error in the system log:
Dec 12 19:07:12 /usr/sbin/smbd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found
Dec 12 19:07:13 /usr/sbin/smbd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found
Dec 12 19:07:13 /usr/sbin/smbd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found
Dec 12 19:07:14 /usr/sbin/smbd: cupsd's bootstrap server port not found
I kill smbd but it starts up again, apparently thanks to /usr/libexec/launchproxy
I'm using the default configuration files for Samba and CUPS and there is no printer set up. Using OS X 10.4.3 (not Server). repaired permissions.
this is driving me nuts...any suggestions welcome.

I get that response all the time, it doesn't seem to have any relevance to anything and as far as I can tell, doesn't impair the functioning of my machine.

  • The Applications File Server could not open the file

    Hi All,
We have shared appl_top between 2 nodes.
When running concurrent request such as active user report, i got the following error:
The Applications File Server could not open the file oXXXXX.out for read
    I have found metalink note
The Applications File Server could not open the file o611681.out for read (Doc ID 1311372.1)
The $APPLCSF are all fine and so are the permissions.
I found out if i start my primary node first, wait till concurrent manager start, then start second node, it would be ok.
    is this recommended practice?
i thought i can start up all node at the same time.
am i right to say that the last node run adautocfg is the primary node?
    Thanks in advance

I found out if i start my primary node first, wait till concurrent manager start, then start second node, it would be ok.
is this recommended practice?Do you have PCP implemented? If yes, you do not need to start the CMs on the second node and running adcmctl.sh script on the first node would be enough.
i thought i can start up all node at the same time. What exactly do you start?
am i right to say that the last node run adautocfg is the primary node? Please explain what components are running on each node.

  • Nimatlabserver indicates server running but port not open

I have a problem, where matlab release13 tells me that the server is running on xxx port when loaded but checking that with netstat -na from a command prompt the xxx port is not open. My main issue is that I can't figure out why the server doesn't open the port? Anyhting you might have learned would be helpful. I used the main.vi to call the SIT start server.vi and I can see then that the port 6011 is open. I tried multiple ports to open in matlab but nothing works. I am using SIT v2.0

    Timmy,
If the SIT server is able to open port successfully, netstat -na will show a TCP port 6011 in Listening state. Failure to open the port should cause an error dialog and is most commonly caused by another application already using the port. More information is needed to diagnose the problem, but make sure that no windows security feature is interfering (ex. windows XP SP2 network security setting)
It is not possible to start multiple ports in one matlab process. You will need to start multiple matlab processes and start server by typing 'NiMatlabServer('start',6012)' for example.

Is there a firewall between client and server? Unfortunately you don't tell us , which Windows version you are using. If it is Windows XP SP2 , by default Windows integrated firewall is activated. But this shouldn't be a problem in your case, because you are using Windows as a client.

  • Distiller Server "Could not open file" modal dialog

We're running Distiller Server 8, and I've got a dilemma that I'm hoping is solvable.
This is installed on a Windows 2008 server, with jobs coming into watched folders from our OPI server. Periodically, we get a dialog box that says Acrobat Distiller "Could not open the file: P:\OPI_Data\PDF_Processing\Index_PDFs\out\<filename>". The path specifics will vary, but it's always a path to a file in process... not to a config file or anything like that.
The big problem is that this pops up as a modal dialog and Distiller won't process any more files until someone clicks "OK". On the console. On a server. In the datacenter. We run two shifts, and I'm getting really tired of phone calls at midnight saying "Distiller is hung... can you fix it?"
Is there a way to run Distiller Server in silent mode? Some way to tell it "If you have a problem, just fail that job and move on"? Having to have a server administrator connect in and click a dialog box is just silly.

That seems to have done the trick, thanks.  I don't really like doing forces unless someone who knows more than I recommends it, as I see way too many threads where that has complicated things tremendously.

  • Linked Server "Could not open a connection to SQL Server [1909]" after reboot

We have two production servers, with RCP [out] enabled linked servers set up back and forth between them. When they are rebooted at the same time one of the linked servers will throw this error:
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [1909]. 767462021 OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "server3" returned message "Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "server3" returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and
if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.".
I've been fixing it by dropping and re-creating the linked server. It's completely identical as before (in sp_linkedservers), so I'm thinking this shouldn't be necessary. My guess is it's only happening because during startup the other server was not available.
If this is true, can I force a reset of the linked server, without having to restart the server instance, or recreate the linked server?

Hi Chuck, thanks for the reply. Both servers were already set to 20. I think this might work if in the ensuing 10 seconds the other server happened to come on line.  I could also set it to 60, but then production queries would be waiting 60 seconds
for timeout.  I'm really after a cause and solution. It's as though the server tries once, sees that the other server is unavailable, and henceforth refuses to try again. I'd like it to try again. Really, it should try every time.
Could it be that upon startup SQL Server looks for all its linked servers and marks ones it can't reach in that moment as forever invalid?  I'm sure this doesn't happen after startup, only during.

  • E1200 Ports not open on DMZ mode

I've DMZ'd my computer using the the E1200's Web Browser Config screen (192.168.1.1) yet when I try to test the ports not a single one is open.
I've used this test to see if they were open:
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/p2p/
And almost none of them were. Is there any issue that could be causing this?
Also when I try to open a single port the site says it times out.
Opening single ports didn't help either.
I've also tried to DMZ via the IP and the MAC address of my PC and still no luck.

As you can see the IP address on the internet port of the E1200 is not a public one. It's not the one you see on whatismyip.com or similar.
Your "modem" is also a router. The public IP address is on that modem. Any incoming connection from the internet ends at the modem. Thus, any port forwarding on the E1200 is fully ineffective as you don't have any matching port forwarding on your modem.
Best solution: set your modem into "bridge" mode to turn it into a real modem. In bridge mode you have to configure the E1200 for your internet connection (DHCP or PPPoE depending on your ISP). Then the E1200 gets the public IP address and port forwarding should work.

  • Server 2008 R2 DNS Server can not open active directory erro 4000

The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory.  This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it.  Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly
and reload the zone. The event data is the error code. Error 4000
This just started happening yesterday. Also File service and print server is unable to contact because of this error. I have no lookup zones. When I try and go to the DNS server I get a message The server VETSALDC could be contacted The error was Access
Denied. Would you like to add it anyway?
    PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that DNS unable to open Active Directory with error 4000.
This happens when that particular DC/DNS server has lost its Secure channel with itself or PDC. This can also happen in a single DC environment where that DC/DNS server holds all the FSMO roles and is pointing to itself as Primary DNS server.
You may check AD DS using command line “DCdiag” (run as administrator). besides, you may try to stop and restart AD DS service(detailed steps reference the link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732714(WS.10).aspx ), make sure that the AD DS is running correctly.
Then restart the DNS service, detailed steps reference the link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc735673(v=ws.10).aspx .
If the problem still exits, is there any other DC or DNS on your network? Post the TCP/IP parameters (ipconfig /all) of DC and DNS here.
    Best Regards,

Please someone help me out. I have been trying to get this for a few days.

Try removing the FCSvr client from your local machine and then reinstalling it from the web installer while you are connected via VPN. Run these commands in Terminal to remove it:
    rm -r ~/Library/Caches/Java/
    rm -r ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finalcutserver/
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finalcutserver.plist
    rm -r ~/Desktop/Final Cut Server.app
Sometimes my client just won't launch like you are seeing and reinstalling it within whatever network connection I'm using gets it working again.
