10.8.4 Finder freezes since upgrading

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.4, my MacBookPro freezes. At first I thought it was the back up device, but even when that is not running, it still happens. I don't know if it is just the Finder freezing everything or an application like iMail. When it freezes, no application will work, I can not click to quit any open apps -- I have to use my mouse RIGHT click to quit those apps or to restart or quit. A few times I ahve had to quit/restart with theON/OFF button on the laptop since I can not navigate at all. Sometimes, when it freezes I am in a Finder window and the mouse will scroll up and down and highlight all documents in the Finder window.
So, the mouse moves, but only works on right click.
I can not close any open window.
I can not quit any app unless I right click on the app icon in the app bar.
Quitting every open app does not help.
I have to restart the computer.
This can happen mulitiple times in an hour or just once every few hours.
Version 10.8.4, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Any thoughts?

Hey Chuck
There are a few things, one is to follow the steps in the article below to isolate if it is just your user or is it system wide. If it is user specific, the best advise is to back up the data and then copy it into the new user and remove the old one.
Isolating issues in Mac OS X

If it something that is system wide then you will need to backup and then reinstall the operating system. I have provided a link for that process.

  • Mac keeps freezing since upgraded to yosemite

since I have upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBook pro 2009 safari and chrome and many other apps that I try to run freeze and lock up the entire computer. If I wait eventually it will unfreeze. I have tried restarting several times. Could I have a virus?

    Could I have a virus?
    You could, your Mac can't.
It's infinitely more likely that your Mac contains incompatible software. Post an EtreCheck report to give us an idea of what is installed.

  • Safari windows freezing since upgrading to Lion

Since I have upgraded to Lion I have had windows freeze - usually when I am filling out an online form. The window becomes blurry & nonresponsive. I can open new windows they work just fine, or if I have multiple windows open, I can switch to them no problem, but nothing short of  quiting Safari will let the frozen be unfrozen.
This is disappointing. I've had a Mac on one sort or another since 19886.
I have included a screen shot of the freeze - it did it while accessing this support site!!!

    I have three extensions installed.
    Ghostery
    Clip to DEVON Think
    1Password
    Ghostery was not enabled.
If I recall, it does seem to occur after using the 1Password extension. (Which is in beta since the release of Lion) so you may be onto something. I will try disabling each & see if I can reproduce the freeze.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • My Iphone5 continuously crashes and freezes since upgrading to IOS 8

Ever since I upgraded all my phone does is crash all the time and freeze. My apps freeze constantly and my messaging does as well. I have the IOS 8.0.2 and my phone is worthless now. I cannot do anything with it. Seriously, it's my first iphone and I can't wait for my contract to be over in a few months so I can go back to Android. There is no reason why my phone should be useless after a supposed great software update. Apple *****!

    Hi kdbecky1,
If you are having issues with your sounds on your iPhone being inconsistent, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Freezing since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hey all,
I've been researching this issue extensively and it seems as if it would be most efficient if I started my own post instead of cluttering someone else's.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion within a week of its release. In the past two weeks, my computer has crashed 3 to 4 times. I can still move my mouse, and if I have an app like Spotify open it will continue to play music through the speakers. However, the computer is frozen and I cannot type/click/control the computer. The only way to get it back is by pressing and holding down the power key and rebooting.
Called AppleCare and went to the "Genius" Bar multiple times; neither helped.
I ran EtreCheck on my computer and below are my results:

  • Preview opening invisible files and freezing since upgrade to yosemite

I "upgraded" to yosemite and now preview more or less doesn't function. It started when I tried to open a locked document (which I had locked using adobe cs6 or cs5 I can't remember. Adobe can open it just fine (one page at a time) but preview can no longer open it. It'll open and then as soon as I scroll one page up the document freezes. and from then on out when I hover over the buttons for any document I open or have open in preview the close, minimize and full screen button do not change their icons to let you know you are hovering over them, but they still work. I can still minimize and close thing.
Additionally, when I go to open any more, they open up a blank/see through window. I can see a slightly opaque box where the file should be but there is nothing there. And I can minimize this box of nothing, and close the box of nothing, but that's it. I have to quit preview and start/get stuck all over again.
I have an early 2013 macbook pro with a dual core i7, 8 GB of ram
Lastly, as a side note, that sound the reminders makes is awful.. It sounds like my computer has gas... *facepalm*

I have similar problems. I used to be able to double click an item, such as a photo or Microsoft Word document, and have it open easily using Mavericks but Yosemite doesn't seem to work. I've tried changing the open with settings for .jpgs, etc. for each app but Yosemite changes all files to the same setting regardless of whether it's a Word document or a photo from Adobe. Running a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 and 4 GB memory.

  • Freezes since upgrading to 10.4.6 in powerbooks

It's a long discussion and I'd suggest you go to the following string. I'm only posting it here because I believe this is where the problem really lies, in the world between Mac and Windows.

Most people having this issue have successfully solved it cleaning up the LaunchServices cache. The following article describes how to manually reset LaunchServices. The notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved.
    Resetting Launch Services
The following article also describes the side effects of cache cleaning:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
The following article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner.
In addition to the utilities mentioned above, you may also consider OnyX, if for no other reason, because it's free. If you want to try OnyX, after installing it, do this (be sure to read the articles about the side effects of cache cleaning first):
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you've already done them using other utilities.
    5. Click the Execute button.
If that doesn't solve the problem, you may try again checking the Links between documents and applications option in step 3 instead.
Please let me know whether you were able to solve the problem, what worked for you and what didn't.

  • Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks the Finder freezes up on me all the time. Does anyone else have this problem?

I recently upgraded my 27" iMac from Mac OS 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.0.1. Now my finder freezes all the time, usually when transfering a file from one folder to another. Most recently I simply double clicked on my Macintosh HD icon and got the spinning beach ball. I then am forced to force the computer to shut down, and start up again.

Sounds like the backup you're using to restore from is corrupt. Restoring from a corrupt backup will continue to restore the problem. I'd suggest you start fresh and delete all of your current iPhone backups(there should only be one). You can delete them here: iTunes>Preferences>Devices.

  • ICal, Mail and Finder times all stuck since upgrade!  System clock O.K.

    Very strange problem:
All of my calendar event times (in iCal), email message receipt times (in Mail), and file modification/creation times (in Finder) are listed as some time between 7:00-7:59 AM or PM, regardless of time of day! My system clock (as it appears in the menu bar) is fine!
    More details:
iCal: the events still look like they're at the right times, i.e. the blocks are in the right places, with the correct spacing, etc etc, they are just labeled with times between 7:00-7:59 AM/PM. Similarly, alarms go off at the correct time. Also, in the day or week listing, the column on the left which is supposed to show times instead just says "Sat" for all times, except "Noon" (at noon).
This is continuous since upgrading to snow leopard a couple weeks ago. Seemingly no other problems besides this.
I don't know much about the OS, but I don't understand how the system clock (in the menu bar) could be fine, but every other sign of time-keeping is completely off. I just its just something about the labeling of times, instead of the actual record of them?!
I have screen shots of the problems if that might help clarify (apparently I can't attach them however).
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
    Any solutions to your problems?
Just found my Mom has the same 'time stuck' problem (iMac OS X 10.6.7) Finder 'Date Modified' is stuck at 2/14/2011. Also, the Time/Date displays correctly on the Menu bar but when click on it, the drop down menu shows a gray out 2/14/2011, etc.
Much appreciated of any help. Thx.

  • Since upgrading to Firefox 4 every time I open or refresh a page everything freezes and I have to wait a minute or so for it to respond again. I'm also having problems with uploading to Photobucket and watching things via Youtube since the upgrade.

Since upgrading to Firefox 4.0 a couple of days ago, every time I open or reload a page the whole browser freezes. At first I thought it might be down to compatibilty issues with other programmes open at the time, but as the problem has persisted when those programmes aren't open I'm starting to think it's the browser itself and it's getting extremely frustrating having everything freeze every time I want to change a page.
My other problem is twofold: with Youtube nothing plays at all because the toolbar with the play/pause option simply isn't there and I am unable to access the upload function on Photobucket because likewise it won't appear. I'm assuming this has something to do with Flash but have no idea how to fix it.
    I've tried

hello, often such issues are caused by a firewall/security software which doesn't recognize & therefore blocks new firefox versions. please remove all program rules for firefox from your firewall and let it detect the new version of the browser again.

Since upgrading to Firefox 27.0 some webpages will not load when I click on them. It gives me a message saying that Firefox can't find the server. I have to click the link several time before it will load and sometimes when they do load it does not show the page right. It is like the HTML is messed up or something. I have tried everything I can think of. I started in safe mode, still did it., I removed add-ons, still did it., I reset Firefox and still did it., I completely uninstalled Firefox and re-installed Firefox and it still does it. I have tried Malware Bytes Anti-Malware scans and Avast boot-time scans and found no malware or viruses. I have found that those websites open the first time with no problems on my IE9 and they used to do so in Firefox 26.0. I'm at my wit's end. The website links are in my bookmarks and are used all the time so they are trusted and my avast is set to allow them. They range from news websites to gun websites and everything I have read says that Mozilla does not filter those unless something has changed recently.

  • Since upgrading to 10.8 my iMac can't see video files to copy across in Finder when connecting my AVCHD camcorder via USB

Hi, I usually connect my Panasonic AVCHD Camcorder via USB to copy the .MTS files across to my iMac for editing. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, Finder sees the directories for photos stored on the Camcorder but not the video directories/files. I can see them via Parallels. Any ideas why?
    Thanks, Julian

ML will show the AVCHD as a pkg, so you are not able view the directories like BDMV-->Stream-->MTS. You can right click AVCHD file, then choose show package contents. you will see BDMV, then you right click BDMV to choose show package, you will see stream folder, just do it again, you will find MTS files. Next time if you want to check the MTS files you just need to do above again. right click AVCHD....
Another way, rename AVCHD to AVCHD.mts then do it same with BDMV and Stream folder, it will let you see MTS files after that. Those mts files will keep showing on your mac next time.
    Hope it helps

Since upgrading to Mavericks I am finding that I am lucky to get 2 hours (when connected to WiFi) of use from my Macbook Pro.  I have turned off Bluetooth ( which was not an issue previously), uninstalled Chrome, again not an issue before I upgraded, and have not seen any improvement.
I was using an older OS system (Snow Leopard) on my 2010 Macbook Pro.  I am wondering now if the upgrade was an unwise move?

    jbuckworth,
which apps do you run under battery power? Are any of them identified as “apps using significant energy” when you click on the battery icon in the menu bar? If you have a 15-inch or 17-inch model, are your apps using the discrete GPU (which consumes more power than the integrated GPU)?
How many charge cycles has your battery accumulated?
How long have you had Mavericks installed? Is Spotlight still reïndexing your boot drive? (It does that whenever your OS is upgraded, because so many files change in an OS upgrade.)
