10.8, trouble assigning apps to a space

I am having an issue assigning some apps to a space. Some apps, < when right clicked and options selected > are fine. The sub menu is there for them and I can set as none, all or this desktop, as usual.
But some apps the submenu just isn't there.  Sometimes it does show up eventually and some never.  Any clues??
This is a fresh install on a new Macmini, with a SSD for the system and the apps folder symlinked from the hard drive. However, that doesn't seem to be the issue since all my apps run from the hard drive and some work fine.
Weird
Thanks for any assistance.

*2. When in the Spaces preferences, you used to be able to click on an application in the list and DRAG it to the space you want to assign it to.* For example:
    a. Open Spaces preferences
    b. Click on the + (plus) button to add an application to the Application Assignments list, let's say Address Book
    c. Once the Application is in the list, click and drag it to the space to assign it to, say, Space 3.
    d. The application SHOULD now be assigned to that space.
Since 10.5.3, I'm not able to drag any application to the space to assign it. It doesn't change the space assignment. I can still select the space in the dropdown.
Can anyone else confirm either of these (either the Warnings in the console or the behavior I'm seeing)? Neither my Mac Pro or MacBook work correctly.
    -Kevin

I cannot replicate your problems, so I would assume either you upgraded over an already dysfucntional system or your update was corrupted in some way.
To start I would suggest you download the 10.5.3 Combo Updater and reinstall it after you do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this does not resolve the problem, then you will need to reinstall OS X. Assuming the disk is OK you can do that as follows (you will need about 10 GBs of free space or more:)
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Assigning Apps to Multiple, not all, Spaces

    Yo,
So I know how to move and assign applications to certain spaces. My question, however, is whether an application can be assigned to multiple, but not all, spaces. For example, I would like iTunes to be in spaces 1,3, and 5 but not in 2,4 or 6. As far as I've seen, you can only assign it to either no spaces, 1 space or all spaces. Anyone else have any success in this area?

    Hello?  Anybody?

  • Assign apps to Spaces (as previously with spaces)

    Hello there,
With Spaces I was able to assign application to specific spaces, now with Lion I can't seem to save the state, where applications should open.
For example I like to have iTunes on Desktop 2, so that I have a clean desktop for work on Desktop 1, as soon as I restar tthe computer iTunes and everything that was previously opens on different Desktops (spaces), opens on desktop 1 and I have to sort everything again. I miss that feature to assign applications to specific spaces. Does anyone know a way to do this in Lion, or a tool to download?
Thanks very much for your input,
    Joe

I did not do a clean install; ML was installed over Snow Leopard.
I have found that the only way application assignments to specific Spaces will "stick" is if you check the box that says "Reopen windows when logging back in" at Restart.  Even then, getting assignments made can be a process of fiddling, with restarts necessary at times before you can assign them.  It is much harder than in Snow Leopard, and of more limited use (since you have to allow your system to reopen applications upon restart and not quit applications before shutting down).
I participated in another thread on this subject, where I gave a few more details.

  • I am having trouble with app updates on my iOS 5 iPhone never getting beyond the "waiting" state.

I am having trouble with app updates on my iOS 5 iPhone never getting beyond the "waiting" state. I have tried signing out/in of my account, rebooting and removing/re-installing the apps.  This started shortly after going to iOS 5 but I am not certain if that is related.  All updates that I try now are stuck in "waiting".  I also tried removing the apps and then installing via iTunes desktop sync with no improvement.  The only thing that I have not tried so far is a restore to a prior iPhone backup.  I have not been able to find anything to indciate what the updates on waiting on.  There is plenty of space on the iPhone (16gb available).  Any suggestions on what to try next?

    Hello there, Missy.
First thing I would recommend is to check your downloads queue to make sure there is not an interrupted download per the following Knowledge Base article:
iTunes: How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1725
If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    1. From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
    2. For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
    3. Enter your account name and password if prompted.
    4. Tap the blue download arrow to resume.
If you can't complete the download on your iOS device, you can download it in iTunes on your Mac or PC and then sync it to your iOS device. You can also transfer purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer.
For Apps, you can also try tapping on the application icon to resume the download, as outline in this featured discussion:
App updates won't download on my...: Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4111336
Try tapping the App, so that it changes to Paused instead of Waiting, then tap it again to resume the install.
Make sure you don't have any paused downloads in other apps either, like the App Store or iTunes Store.
If that doesn't do it, try resetting or restoring the iPhone.

  • Load various apps in different Spaces at login?

    Hello all,
Is it possible to launch, at login, different apps in each space of Spaces? I'd like upon login to have each one of my four spaces to have apps preloaded. Some apps need to be usable in all spaces, some not. I know you can assign login apps to a specific space, but that is not what I need. Since the Login prefs panel doesn't allow to select a startup launch Space for each app, I've been searching high and low for a solution. Maybe Automator or Applescript, but I know very little about both. Thank you for any help !

Thanks WBW, but won't that cause the behavior I'm trying to avoid, ie systematically opening a given app in a specific space? I know I can do that in the spaces prefs, but what I want is keep all apps able to be opened in any space, while having each space launch a specific instance of certain apps upon login. For instance, I have a space for entertainment and another for work, among others, so I'd need a copy of Firefox in each, for instance, along with a text editor in the work space and a video player in the entertainment one, for example... does that make more sense? I apologize for any ambiguity.

  • Whither "Show app on every Space"?

Hmm, Lion seems pretty cool so far, but it appears the option to display an app in every Space (or even to assign an app to a specific Space) is history.
    Am I missing something?
I typically have RSS feed tickers, and other dynamic information, displayed in every space on a second display so, no matter which Space I'm in, they're visible.  I've looked through the Mission Control prefs, but that option seems no longer available?

    Hi Clay,
Hmm, nope.  I didn't do anything special to enable it.  You should also be able to click-hold on the app icon while it's in the Dock.  A little menu will be displayed with an "Options" submenu.  This submenu contains the following:
    Keep in Dock
    Open at Login
    Show in Finder
    Assign To
      All Desktops
      This Desktop
      None
    Good luck!

  • Spaces -- one app in two Spaces?

Can you only assign an app to one space or all Spaces?
I'd like Safari, for instance, in Space 1 and Space 4 but not 2 and 3. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

The "for all" appears to have been designed to allow an application "float" onto each and every desktop as you select each "Space". It does not actually reside in each "Space". If you press F8 you will see it will only appear in the active "Space" and hence only one "copy" is actually loaded. This can be demonstrated by opening multiple windows in Safari. ALL windows move together irrespective of which "Space" they were opened in.

  • Why are Apps taking up space on my Mac in iTunes when I have iCloud?

The Apps in iTunes on my Mac take up a lot of disk space. Why are they there at all? I use iCloud to backup my iPhone and iPad. iTunes Store keeps my purchase history. So, why are the Apps taking up space on my computer?

  • I'm having trouble assigning keyboard to their own channels.

I have trouble assigning keyboard to different channels.  I am using 3 keyboards.  One is an M-Audio Keyrig49 which is using on USB port.  The other two MIDI keyboards are ports A and B going through an M-Audio MIDISPORT 4x4.  The Macbook is detecting 5 MIDI channels (4 from the MIDISPORT and one from the Keyrig49), but keyboards always "learn" on channel 1.  I would like to assign each keyboard to its own channel.  Suggestions?

Actually, you can assign each keyboard to its own group of 1-16 MIDI channels. I'm using 3 keyboards, too, and I believe you'll find it easier to do it this way. Below is a snapshot of Audio MIDI Setup. All my keyboards are connected to USB MIDI cables. USB ports work the same way. I named and color-coded all the USB MIDI cables and keyborad icons for easy ID and troubleshooting. Then when you create and assign screen controls in layout mode, it's easy to find the right keyboard(fig. 2).
Each keyboard can transmit on any and all MIDI channels, without conflicting with another MIDI device. Hope this helps.

  • I am having trouble updating apps through iTunes, iTunes shuts down when I try to sync.

I am having trouble updating apps that I have on my iPhone through iTunes.  I go through the update then when syncing I get an error message iTunes has to shut down.  The only way I have been able to work around is to delete the app and download it again.  If I don't do this the app says waiting on my iPhone.

I just got the same message myself. Which I have only had 2 times in three years, so I checked here.
    http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
There is an issue with the iTunes Store on Apple's end, so I assume that is why we cannot connect.

It probably got too cold and shut down. Warm it to room temperature, then hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears.
