100,000+ "image" files in Address Book's home Library folder

I was backing up my home folder and noticed that the directory ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images had 105,619 files taking up over 800 MB of space. I was wondering if anyone else has had this "problem" (I'm not sure what to call it...)

Hi
Sorry about the delay in replying to your last message, but I've had a print deadline to meet, which always puts everything else on hold.
I've opened a few of the .abcdp files with Text Edit and the information is in there, buried among loads of code, so many thanks for telling me that. I've beamed the address book from my other half's Palm (which used to be mine) over to mine, so I should have most of the current contacts which I hope I can transfer onto the iMac. The missing ones, distant members of my family for instance, I will have to search for in the .abcdp files and enter manually into AB (always remembering to take a backup regularly!).
Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a Mac running Leopard, in fact I only know one other person with a Mac. We freed ourselves from the thralldom of the PC only three years ago and are still the odd ones out with colleagues and friends. Having the Macs has made using a computer enjoyable for the first time in 25 years, ever since we bought a Commodore 700 and I began the daily struggle with various pieces of user-hostile software.
Many thanks for helping me out. I've put Snow Leopard at the top of my shopping list by the way.
Regards
Susan

  • Images lost in Address Book!

Address Book crashed this evening and the .previous file didn't work. Luckily last month I copied the Address Book Folder in the App support folder in my user folder -- so I transferred it over. My contacts and groups are back BUT the images on the vcards are GONE! The folder for images is still in Address Book>App Support> library>user (all 228 images!) but they're not showing up in Address Book.
    Help!
    Thanks!

Just something to try. Have you gone to Disk Utility and repaired permissions after doing the update? If not, go ahead and try it.

  • 100,000 images?

Last fall, I was shooting beside a friend who teaches Aperture at various shows and events. He mentioned rumors of LR having problems with the database files once the catalog reaches 100,000  images. At the time, I probably only had 75,000 images in my main catalog, but I am now just over the number. I upgraded to 3.0 just in case the story was true, and hoping Adobe would have fixed the problem if there ever was one. So, was he spreading a bad rumor? Was there really a problem? And if there was a problem in 2.x, is it now resolved in 3.x?
Are there people here with well over 100,000 images in their catalogs?
    Thanks in advance,
    M. Jackson

    John,
Thanks for the response. Sounds like the 100,000 barrier might just be a rumor if people have 275,000 in LR2. After I heard it, I kept watching for posts with similar concerns and haven't seen it. The guy who told me is an active wildlife photographer and is around lots of people with plenty of experience using LR. He went on to say Apple had a different way of maintaining the database than Adobe, making it more reliable. I put more faith in the comment than some comments I might hear in the field.
Back when I was building my first catalogs, people here said they knew of people with 90,000 images in their catalogs and going strong. That gave me the courage to continue with just one main catalog. At something like 101,000, I started to hear the echo of that warning.
    Take care,
    M. Jackson

  • Backup tips for 100,000+ images/yr

I shoot roughly 100,000 images a year and I am on the road quite a bit. I am currently using a Macbook Pro w/256GB SSD so space is limited.  I pretty much just keep the images from the current week before I move them to a backup drive.
Any suggestions to access the archive on the road?  I currently have a few Travel HD's that are roughly 2TB each. I often get requests where I need to access a specific RAW file when I am out of town.  Any Cloud based solutions? Should I explore a home server?

  • Easiest way to import a bunch of addresses from text file to address book?

What is the easiest way to import text files to address book?
I have a Microsoft Word file with all of my addresses set-up like this:
    Johnny Appleseed
    Apple Computer
    1234 main St.
    Anytown, CT 06905
    203-321-4709
    [email protected]
Is there some easy way to get them in there without having to copy & paste into each individual field.
    Thanks!

  • Problem importing CSV or tab-delimited file into Address Book

I am trying to import a text file (tab delimited) or csv file into address book. The files are created in Excel and consist 8 columns with address info (first name, last name, street, city etc). For the sake of simplicity, the file only contains 2 records - so all in all 3 rows with data where the first row contains the headers as described above.
I am perfectly able to import the fields first name, last name using Address Book's text import feature. However, as soon as I try to map Address Book's address field (Home, work or other) to my text file's headers, the import wizard stops responding. I can still scroll through the records with the left and right error, but the record count is screwed up ("-3 of 2") and clicking the OK button doesn't result in anything.
So I am able to import the names but not the addresses - so I better rename the Address Book to Name Book
Any clue of what's going wrong?

I've been wrestling with the exact same problem. I have come to a solution, though serendipitously. The address variables belong to a group say address Office.
1 - I creted a column with address Office which clued in AddressBook the the existence of the data for +address Other+ (and it assigned the columns ot the proper data)
2 - address book does have an entry of address with all group elements of same colour, normally. I reassign address other to address office
3 - I also assign address office (in right-hand column) to address office.
At this point I have two groups of address office
4 - I indicate to the second group 'do not import'
    5 - Then hit OK
It seems that this loop is necessary to instantiate the proper group name to the group of variables. Why? who knows. Bad UI? Clearly. Apple engineers should've thought about it before? no kidding...

  • WISH TO TRANSFER FILES AND ADDRESS BOOK FROM WINDOWS 98PC TO NEW IMAC.

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES AND ADDRESS BOOK FROM WINDOWS PC 98 TO IMAC .

For addresses, general answer is to use Export function in your PC program and export in .csv (comma separated value) format. Then open Address Book app on new iMac and choose Import from File menu and locate the file you exported (on USB stick, or by email, for example). Should work! You've heard that before, right?
This page includes how to transfer files, among other questions that might arise. http://www.apple.com/why-mac/faq/

  • Importing .wab file into address book or anywhere else on my mac

    Hello all,
I'm trying to import a Windows .wab file into Address Book (or anywhere else on my Mac for that matter) but can't find a way to make the two like eachother.
I got the file from someone else and do not have a Windows computer to use in the process.
Any suggestion would be most welcome!

Unfortunately those files are in a format unknown to any Mac application. What you may try is this utility but I do not know that it will convert only the .wab file, but it's supposed to be able to convert Outlook data to an OS X readable format.
In the future be aware that Outlook data files are incompatible with OS X. Have your Windows friends export their data files in a readable format such as Comma or Tab delimited text files.

  • Image Capture in Address Book

It's not possible for me to capture an image in Address Book with the built in webcam. When I try to make a picture it counts back, the led is on but no image is taken and a blank image is dispayed. If I retry the capture, the webcam light is no longer on and an error message appears in the Console:
    Address Book\[2812\] --ImageKit Error: QTKit launched an error : userInfo = {
    QTCaptureSessionErrorKey = Error Domain=QTKitErrorDomain Code=-1 UserInfo=0xf21c6f0 "Operation could not be completed.";
    error's userInfo = {
    NSLocalizedDescription = "Operation could not be completed.";
    NSLocalizedRecoverySuggestion = "The operation could not be completed due to an unknown error. (Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=268451843 \"Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error 268451843.)\")";
    NSUnderlyingError = Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=268451843 "Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error 268451843.)";
The webcam works fine in Photo Booth and Skype, except if I launch Photo Booth right after quitting Address Book (than it crashes), a minute later it's OK.
Am I the only one with this issue ?

The <$sectionnum> building block is controlled by the Section tab in the numbering dialog. But you are not using that. You are using <n+>, which is a paragraph counter. So, you use the Paragraph tab in the numbering dialog to control paragraph numbering. Select "Restart Paragraph Numbering".
NOTE: After you set the numbering in all the files in your book, you need to update the book in order to see the changes. Did you update the book?

  • PDF files and address books

I am no longer able to open any PDF file. When I try to do so the screen on the PDF file is black and I cannot view the content of the file.  Also, I am unable to open my address book.  There is a shadow "question mark" image over the book.  Any help on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.  I did check another forum which suggested uninstalling Adobe Reader to solve the PDF issue.  I have uninstalled this program however, it has not helped. Thnx.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Importing text file to address book?

I created a text tab-delimited file for import. From within Address Book, ran "Import". Matched up field names. All looked good. When I clicked on "OK" basically very little happened. After a few seconds the blue OK button became clear but nothing else. I advanced another record, clicked OK on it and same few seconds then nothing. I expected all the records to be imported.
In any case, tried this individually with a few records, then checked the Address Book and none of the info was in there.
Is this some kind of bug? I don't see that I did anything that was wrong with the import.
    Advice appreciated.
    Richard

Not sure if this helps, but ...
I made a quick text file to see if I could duplicate your problem. I put in three lines, the first with field names (First, Last, Work) and the other two with corresponding data. The values within each line were tab separated. When I ran AB's import I had to match up the third field to correspond with email (work). I flicked through the displayed records (all two of them!!) and they displayed as contact cards. I then clicked OK, and unlike your description, the import dialogue immediately vanished. The records were correctly imported.
When you look at the records in the import dialog do they all display correctly?
Could it be a 10.4.3 issue?
After attempting to do the import, has your contact count gone up?
What happens if you select the "last import" group?

  • How can I export to a text file from address book?

I started a group in Address Book for a project. Now it is the most complete database of folks involved. I want to send it to some folks who live in the PC world.
Exporting as a VCF or address book archive just doesn't do it.
    Any and all suggestions welcome.

The feature to export SWF files directly from After Effects has been removed. It never worked at all well.
To create SWF files, use Flash Professional.
If you want to play a movie that you've created in After Effects in a SWF container, then export your composition using Adobe Media Encoder in H.264 format and then link or embed that movie into a SWF file in Flash Professional.

  • What are the files for address book named?

my hard drive was failing, and i tried to save as much as I could.  I got everything back and loaded on my new drive, but my address book.  I have several files with the title address book but none seem to restore my names and addresses..
    HELP
    thanks
    Jack Osterholt

    Jack..
If you didn't create an archive, might be out of luck.
File name should be:   Address Book - (the date).abbu
To restore: In Address Book, choose Revert to Address Book Backup from the File menu. In the resulting dialog, locate your backup file (it ends with a .abbu extension), select it, and click Open.

  • Access via command line to the data files for Address Book

    Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8
Mac Mini 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3
I rolled back from Mountain Lion Server to Snow Leopard Server because I needed mySql. At the time I was under AppleCare and they walked me through the steps. However, I ended up with Address Book issues.
Addressbook user on the Snow Leopard Server was upgraded to Mountain Lion Server. During the rollback process, the Apple tech had me delete the Addressbook user.
When we finished the rollback, he had me recreate the Addressbook user, but now it is linked to a new, empty data file. I cannot add new contacts nor edit or delete them. So I need to use the command line to view both data store files, find the one that has my data in it and re-attach it to my new Addressbook user.
Can someone help me with the Command Line commands?
    Thank you,
    Cailyn

    Hi,
There are a couple of more advanced solution I can think of and I'm actually working on one myself.
    * You can create your own jnlp client that allows you to pass in arguments. That sounds harder than it easy. Building a stripped down jnlp client (e.g. no installer, no applets) using one of the two open-source client as a start takes probably just a couple of days and should be sufficient for in house usage.
    * Another solution is what I'm working on now. You can wrap your own executable around javaws that takes your passed in arguments plus jnlp href and looks up the original in the cache and adds a new one to the cache that it passes on to javaws and suddenly everything works as it should. The magic will be revealed at http://www.geocities.com/vamp201

  • Can't import the address part of a text file into Address Book

I am trying to import from a text file. It simply will not let me hit OK if I try to import the address information but works fine if I omit the address.
    Any ideas? Getting very frustrated.
    Schmleff

I exported my database in a tab delimited format from palm desktop on a windows machine.
I clicked import from the address book menu, selected "from text file". It opens the import window as you would expect it to. I begin to align the data with the proper fields. If I ignore all address information, it imports just fine, but obviously with no addresses. If I try to align any address information at all, it will not let me click ok. the button clicks, but does nothing. If I unselect the address info again, its imports. No directions are available to guide me and everything looks like it should work. Begining to feel like Im in windoze world again.
