10G on 32 bit Windows to 11GR2 on 64 bit windows using DBUA

Scenario is this: I am upgrading a 10.2.0.3.0 database running on 32 bit server 2003 to 11.2.0.1 running on server 2008 64 bit.
I normally use export/import for this, but I was thinking about using DBUA if possible this time, is it possible to copy datafiles and configuration files over from the 10G machine and use DBUA?
If not, and I have to use exp/imp or datapump, am I better off to pre create all user accounts and tablespaces ( a big job in this case) and do schema level imports, or use the full=y ignore=y parameters. I ask this because the last import I tried from 9i t0 11G using full=y did not go well when it tried importing sys and system objects into 11G. (I wish oracles import utility would let you exclude schemas as another option instead of just the fromuser= parameter)
thanks in advance.

Hi,
Since you're changing the bit version you can't just directly copy the datafiles to new machine, you would need to convert it into 64bit first then do the DBUA.
I would suggest using datapump instead of old exp/imp. With datapump you just need to prepare the schemas tablespaces. User will automatically created when import is running.
Hope this helps

  • Windows 7 64 bit, Access 2010 32 bit, Oracle 10G client 32 bit, Oracle database 10.2.0.4 64 bit

    I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database from Windows 7 OS - 64 bit using
    Access 2010 32 bit and Oracle 32 bit client version 10.2.0.1 installed on PC.
    My user requires a 64 bit Windows 7 OS for other needs.
    Oracle ODBC driver is 32 bit from Oracle 32 bit client.
    In Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ODBC DSN setup software is located in:
    C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe for 64 bit drivers - all DSN types setup and
    C:\Windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe for 32 bit drivers - USER DSN setup
    When I run the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I see the Version number is 6.1.7601.17632
    I setup a User DSN using the 32 bit odbcad32.exe with a 32 bit ODBC driver.
    Our Oracle TNSnames.ora file has our standard entries which have worked for years
    (Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
    So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
    But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
    1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
    2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
    3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
    4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
    ODBC call failed
    [Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0
             [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)
    I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
    I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
    reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
    I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
    Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

    Thank you for your reply.
    I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
    I found this small comment:
    “There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
    It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
    I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
    When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
    We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
    I tried it and it solved the problem!
    With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
    it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.
    Solved.

  • Oracle 10g xe 32 bit on windows server 2008 64 bit

    I have windows server 2008 64 bit and oracle 10g xe 32 bit
    does it work on ?
    I have tested but no success.
    Any one knows reasons

    You seem to have posted threads before on very similar topics, and you also posted this once in the appropriate forum:
    {thread:id=2270082}
    Please avoid duplicating posts!
    As already stated in one of your other threads, it is not a certified combination. Again, read the Installation Guide !
    If you want to play with it and try to make it "work", that's up to you. And as you say you have already tried, with "no success", it seems you already got an answer.
    I suggest you close this thread and continue in the dedicated 10g XE forum thread (or try the 11g XE Beta - only for 32-bit Windows yet, but there's a chance the general release will be aimed for Windows x64 as well).

  • Oracle 10g ODBC driver with Windows 7 32 bit connecting to Excel

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm having an issue connecting to our oracle 10g database (64 bit system) from a 32 bit windows 7 installation running excel 2010/2007 using odbc drivers. Our excel spreadsheets worked without issue in windows xp.
    In windows 7 I have been able to install the odbc driver via the following method:
    1. Download the oracle 'basic' client and oracle 'odbc' client from www.oracle.com and extract the contents:
    instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115
    instantclient-odbc-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115
    2. Create a folder 'oracle' and place the instantclient_10_2 folder inside.
    3. Ensure all the basic and odbc files reside in this folder.
    4. Create a 'network' folder within instantclient_10_2
    5. Create an 'admin' folder within 'network'
    6. Create sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files within the 'admin' folder:
    7. Run 'obdc_install' within the instantclient_10_2 folder
    8. Download and run the oracle odbc driver exe file from www.oracle.com (ORA10203.exe)
    9. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources and create a new System DN
    This allows excel spreadsheets connecting ONLY to oracle to function.
    Unfortunately some of our spreadsheets connect to both a MySQL database as well as oracle. Spreadsheets connecting only to MySQL also function correctly, however, as soon as the vb associated with a spreadsheet includes a mysql call followed by an oracle call the spreadsheets fail. In Excel 2007 excel crashes completely everytime. In Excel 2010 the mysql data is generated, then when the script hits to oracle odbc connection there is a long pause, the oracle ODBC driver connect pops up requesting a username/password (this didn't happen in xp), then the data source selection pops up, then the username/password connect screen pops up again, and finally it fails with a runtime error '1004' General ODBC error.
    If you look at the VB script it's failing at the Refresh BackgroundQuery statement in the ODBC connection block:
    With Worksheets("Oracle1").QueryTables.Add(Connection:= _
    "ODBC;DSN=Oracle_ODBC;UID=user;PWD=password;SERVER=ORACLE_LINUX;", _
    Destination:=Worksheets("Oracle1").Range("A1"))
    .CommandText = strSql
    .Name = "Oracle1_data"
    .FieldNames = True
    .RowNumbers = False
    .FillAdjacentFormulas = False
    .PreserveFormatting = True
    .RefreshOnFileOpen = False
    .BackgroundQuery = True
    .RefreshStyle = xlOverwriteCells
    .SavePassword = True
    .SaveData = True
    .AdjustColumnWidth = True
    .RefreshPeriod = 0
    .PreserveColumnInfo = True
    .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False
    End With
    Does anyone know how to get around this? It's very important!!
    Also if you try to edit the oracle ODBC connections in Control Panels -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources, ODBC crashes 95% of the time.
    Advice greatly appreciated!!

    Well, here's what I'd check anyway..
    1) get Process Explorer from http://sysinternals.com
    2) make a mysql connection, get a list of dll's loaded (include the location and version columns in the lower pane output)
    3) close that, then make an ora odbc connection, get a list of dlls.
    4) close that, then make a mysql connection followed by an ora odbc connection, get a list of dlls
    5) compare the lists of loaded dlls. In particular, the difference between #3 and #4, is there a dll dependency that gets loaded by oracle's odbc that comes from a different location when you've opened a mysql connection first?
    May or may not help, but might turn up a difference to help point you in a direction.

    If you are running the x64 version of Windows 2003 and not the Itanium version, you will find 10.2.0.1 here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10201winx64soft.html
    You may then patch it to 10.2.0.3 by downloading the patch from Metalink.

  • 10g Express Edition on Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 x64 with Active Directory

    I have successfully installed the 10g Express Edition on Windows 2008 Ent. r2 x64 with Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controller but i could not be able to run http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex
    Although i have run the http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex on my another Windows 2008 R2 x64 ant WITHOUT Active Directory Domain Controller Role.
    i think its related with AD Domain server role of my server, because i run that on same config and operation without Active Directory Domain Controller role.
    Can anyone help about this issue?
    thanks in advance

    I have experienced the same problem - running 10g Express on a Win 2008 (32-bit). When not being a Domain controller, the install was fine. When installing after the server had been given the Domain Controller role (+the required DNS), it failed. NO FIREWALLS are involved on the server. Seems like Oracle Express has problems being installed in this kind of environment - independent of x32 or x64 bit OS.

    Welcome to the forums !
    This issue has been discussed many times before. Pl use the search feature. The only versions supported in Win 7 (Professional or higher) are 10.2.0.5 and 11gR2. 10.2.0.5 is only available on My Oracle Support, while 11gR2 can be downloaded for free from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html

    I would like to install the Oracle server 8i and 10g on the same windows server? Is this possible.
    Forgive me if this question is already asked.
    Thanks in advance!

    WHICH Windows version? (There's more than one). It would be useful to be a little bit more precise (NT,2000,XP,2003, 32/64 bit) .
    For NT and 2000 it is possible to have both 8i and 10g, for XP and 2003 there's no support for 8i at all.

    TIP Use the Enterprise Manager 10g Java Console to manage Streams, Advanced Replication, Advanced Queues, XML Database, Spatial and Workspace.
    But I am still looking from where it can be launched. Have any professional experienced the Enterprise Manager 10g Java Console on MS Windows platform?
    Regds,
    Faran

    It is not installed by default, you have to mark its
    checkbox explicitly. In the package selection tree, it is
    under Oracle Client 10.1.0.2.0.
    It's only a Beta! But it's much more stable and a little
    bit faster than 9iR2. They probably didn't check it for
    default installation as it's just a beta.
    There's one another interesting issue with Enterprise
    Managers (Java and web) in 10g: each of them recommends
    you in the welcome page to use the other one. What was
    first, the chicken, or the egg???
