ThanksStopping the Oracle RAC 10g Environment
The first step is to stop the Oracle instance. When the instance (and related services) is down, then bring down the ASM instance. Finally, shut down the node applications (Virtual IP, GSD, TNS Listener, and ONS).
$ export ORACLE_SID=orcl1
$ emctl stop dbconsole
$ srvctl stop instance -d orcl -i orcl1
$ srvctl stop asm -n linux1
$ srvctl stop nodeapps -n linux1
Starting the Oracle RAC 10g Environment
The first step is to start the node applications (Virtual IP, GSD, TNS Listener, and ONS). When the node applications are successfully started, then bring up the ASM instance. Finally, bring up the Oracle instance (and related services) and the Enterprise Manager Database console.
$ export ORACLE_SID=orcl1
$ srvctl start nodeapps -n linux1
$ srvctl start asm -n linux1
$ srvctl start instance -d orcl -i orcl1
$ emctl start dbconsole
Start/Stop All Instances with SRVCTL
Start/stop all the instances and their enabled services. I have included this step just for fun as a way to bring down all instances!
$ srvctl start database -d orcl
$ srvctl stop database -d orcl

Just a minor comment on the stop nodeapps.
While it is fine to stop the nodeapps on the server, the drawback to this is, that the VIP will not failover if you stop the nodeapps, but will be stopped.
Hence if you only shutdown one server, then you are causing clients to fail to connect to the VIP and having to wait for the TCP/Timeout.
So if you are not going to shut down all the server, but just want to shutdown one node, you should failover the VIP the the other node.
See: Note 749160.1 Vip Does Not Failover When Nodeapps Stopped
So it is sometimes better instead of stopping the nodeapps, to simply shutdown the cluster with crsctl stop crs (which will failover the VIP).

  • 10g RAC on VMWare Workstation

    Hi Folks,
    i tried to install 10g RAC on VMWare 4.5.2 for testing.
    Hostsystem is XP, ghost system are RedHat-ES-30.
    I configured tho 2 nodes with 2 scsi adapters and 2 Network Card and a shared Disk.
    I installed ocfs 1.0.12 on both nodes, formated the disk and it seems to be fine.
    On the next step ( Installation of CRS ) the runInstaller fails after the node configuration screen with the message:
    Oracle Cluster Registry File can only be saved on a shared filesystem file or on a RAW Device.
    Any Ideas ?
    Thanks

    Hi Laurent,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I checked that and i can't find the Processes or any think else witch is discribed in thr article !
    The Installer pops a message during the creation of the ocr file.
    Have any body tried it with RAW Devices ?

  • 10g RAC upgrade to 11g RAC

    How to perform 10g RAC upgrade to 11g with Dataguard in place?
    OS=LINUX
    RDBMS=10.2.0.4
    DG=PHYSICAL STANDBY
    Below is my understanding
    1)Install 11g CRS in NEW_CRS_HOME
    2)Install 11g in NEW_ASM_HOME
    3)Install 11g in NEW_RDBMS_HOME
    4)Export the new NEW_ORACLE_HOME and start up the database with startup upgrade.
    5) Run the catupgrade.sql script.
    Are there any other steps involve?
    In case I have to rollback then how to rollback CRS.

    Personally I would use DBUA instead of catupgrade.sql, but make sure you follow the upgrade documentation for pre-checks etc. You will also need to use netca to recreate the sqlnet listeners in the 11g homes and register with 11g CRS.
    CRS is generally fairly quick to re-install and re-register databases, and this is cleaner than trying to restore OCR and VOTE disks etc. If you prefer to rollback be sure you backup the OCR and VOTE disks (e.g use dd), backup /etc/oracle, CRS_HOME, /etc/init* scripts etc.
    The dataguard standby database should roll forward through the upgrade, but you will need to manually register the standby with 11gCRS. Make sure you have your DB and Log create_file_dest's set, as well as standby_file_management=auto. Personally I would manually recover the standby after the upgrade in case I need to use it to fallback.

    I would like to know what happens with existing connections

    Are connections frozen, actives?
    Can the users continue to use theses existing connections using the another node of RAC?If the interface is down? what do you think? All connections to this node will die. How does your application handle fail-over, does it attempt to reconnect or just have a complete application failure?
    You should spend some time in a test lab where you can test this stuff for yourself. Read the documentation and there are tons of sites out there that purport to have all of your RAC/TAF/FAN/FAF questions. - I would read and trust the documentation first.

    You know its not certified?
    My first thought when I read the subject of this thread, and before reading what you posted, is that you've either done no research on RAC or didn't understand what you've read.
    You can create a RAC cluster using any operating system certified by Oracle.
    But the operating system is the least important part of creating a cluster. The questions you need to be able to address are:
    1. What is your solution to created shared storage?
    2. What is your solution to create the cache fusion interconnect and VIPs?
    If you don't have an answer to these questions you can not build a RAC cluster.

  • Oracle database not starting up in oracle 10g RAC

    Hi!
    Recently I came across one problem with one node oracle 10g RAC.When the Oracle database is started,while opening it is giving ORA-03113:End of file on communication channel error.When I saw the the alert trace file and other trace files I found Disk group is exhausted error and it is not able to create .dbf files.Actually it is not a production server and I gave archive log destination in SAN.Even the spfile(content of init_database.ora) is in SAN..
    I tried Asmcmd utility to delete the archive log files.As the oracle is not available I am not able to asmcmd prompt.
    How to change the destination of archive log and to remove the old archive log files(as it is a testing environment we can remove) from SAN?Please let me know.

Hmmm, doing it several time, and never seen such issue. Which "known issue" and by who are you talking about ?
    I created a brand new Oracle VM Windows 2003 32-bit server, installed the Oracle drivers for paravirtualization, and whammo, the problem is still hereI'm sure, you miss something somewhere in the config. Right now, you're on supported configuration, you could either raise a SR to the support, or get help from your peer on Oracle Database General forum.
    Ah, but it's not a Windows issue. On a non-VM Windows box the database starts just fine all the time. Again, this is a known issue acknowledged by Oracle on the VMware side, I'm just surprised it exists on the Oracle VM side.Again, give more details about this "known issue". Never heard about that, eventhough I've been around for years.
    I was afraid you were going to ask that. I'll have to search for it again, but I think you can do the same as well....Well, I doubt you could find a Metalink note about Oracle on VMWare. So far, Oracle has always refused to support database on OS virtualized on VMWare (or any VM software other than Oracle VM). Based on that, you could be sure, your "known issue" is not an issue on Oracle VM.
    If you want more help, again, give more details about your issue.

  • What could be the disadvantage of the "AUTO_SPACE_ADVISOR_JOB" in 10g RAC?

    Hi, all.
    The database is 2 node RAC database on 32 bit windows 2003 EE SP1.
    What could be the pros and "CONS" of the "AUTO_SPACE_ADVISOR_JOB" job
    in 10g RAC?
    It is one of advisor, and thus I think it is not required.
    What could be the disadvantage of AUTO_SPACE_ADVISOR_JOB
    in terms of PERFORMANCE in 2 node RAC environment?
    The 2 node RAC database seems to be experiencing performance degrade
    due to default jobs on installation such as AUTO_SPACE_ADVISOR_JOB and
    GATHER_STATS_JOB.
    I am looking forwared to hearing your experience and advice.
    Thanks and Regards.

    Dear Justin.
    Thanks for your reply.
    1) What is the magnitude of the waits you're seeing? Over what time frame?
    --> I found the above wait events in the top 5 wait event section from AWR report.
    The AWR snapshot time frame is one hour.
    --> On a regular basis(maybe, one or two week), the database hangs, causing a number of library cache related wait events and gc related wait event.
    2) If the system is hanging and not doing a log switch, have you debugged that process? I'd be hard-pressed to imagine how library cache events would be related to this sort of thing. I would tend to suspect a hardware/ RAC install/ RAC config issue.
    --> I applogize for insufficient information. I took "system state dump" and "hang analyze" at the time of database hang.
    --> It is hard for me to understand the system dump file. I reported those files to Oracle Support, but no answer was returned now.
    --> As you said, it may be caused by different issues. I will try to investigate other factors.
    3) Why do you "guess that when gather_database_stats tries to get statistics about AWR snapshot objects, it causes a number of library cache invalidation and dictionary cache reload between two nodes?"
    --> I investigated AWR reports during the period of database hang. I found the above wait events with gather_database_stats in common. That is all why I suspect "gather_database_stats" job.
    Specifically regarding the statistics gathering job, is your application is doing something unusual that forces the default statistics job to gather statistics regularly on a substantial fraction of your tables forcing your application to re-parse a substantial fraction of its SQL? Do you have an alternate method for gathering statistics that is going to generate less load and/or invalidate fewer SQL statements? Is your application reusing SQL (i.e. using bind variables)?
    --> Currently, we have not deployed all part of an application. At this point, the data is about 10 Mega. The application is using bind variables, but I also could see high number of sql version count. I am inspecting why.
    --> I am considering gathering statistics manually (only application schema, not all database objects)
    4) What makes you believe that the AWR snapshot process is causing problems?
    --> I applogize for insufficient explanation. I mean the problems occur when "gather_database_stats" job takes statistics of "AWR snapshot data",
    because application data is very very small, only 10 Mega and 28 tables.
    Currently, we have deployed only 1 % of the entire application.
    ● This is the first time I manage a RAC database. I think a RAC database is something different from a single database.
    I do not think the same problem could occur in a single database.
    Thanks for detailed explanation and advice.
    Best Regards.

  • Is there a way to use different NIC names in 10g RAC?

    For example node 1 has ipge0 for private, ipge1 for private and node 2 has Solaris default e1000g0 and e1000g1? Or do interface names have to match on all nodes? I am not referring to IPs or subnets - just NIC names.
    Here is some background.
    This was a 2 node 10g RAC on Solaris that has been in operation for years. Node 2 experienced a corrupt root partition (OS, nothing to do with Oracle), so OS was reinstalled. After OS reinstall I copied /var/opt/oracle/*.* from node 1, changed them to reflect node 2 info, plus CRS related files from /etc/init.d, such as init.crsd, etc. This is shared Oracle home, so Oracle continued to run on node 1 just fine.
    However, after crs startup nodeapps tells me "atlts04ra.atlts04.vip:ifconfig: status: SIOCGLIFFLAGS: ipge0: no such interface". Indeed, this interface does not exist on node 2.
    So, is there a way to instruct oracle to use different interface names for nodes? Or will vipca ask for matching NIC names just like disk mount names have to match?
    I want to avoid reinstallation of RAC because that will disrupt oracle database that has been running on shared oracle home all along.
    Thanks.

    Fzheng, I am very interested in your statement "however you can change the e1000g0 to ipge0".
    You mean to say there is an OS script that will downgrade ipge0 interfaces to e1000g0?
    I got some more information from SysAdmins yesterday. Apparently, when OS was reinstalled on node 2 after root partition corruption, they also patched it up to Solaris 10u9 (which by default created e1000g0-type interfaces). The first node still had 10u7 with ipge0 interfaces. We, the DBAs, were not aware of the upgrade. So, nodeapps cant start saying "no such interface"on node 2.
    You are probably referring to script /usr/sbin/e1000g_transition.
    Here is the description:
    "DESCRIPTION
    This script allows you to perform an optional driver upgrade
    for the Intel PRO/1000 device present on this system from the \"ipge\"
    network driver to the Sun standard \"e1000g\" network driver. The
    e1000g driver include features such as link aggregation as well as
    superior performance in most environments. Moving forward, e1000g
    will benefit from new features as they become available, bug fixes,
    and performance enhancements. The disadvantage is that some
    applications configuration files may require modification to use
    e1000g if they reference the ipge network interface.
    This script must be run in single user mode.
    This script will alter network interfaces and related system
    configuration files. Configuration files for 3rd party applications
    will NOT be changed. After running this script, applications present
    on the system may require maintenance. The system may be in an
    unsecured state. The effects of this script may be reversed using
    the backout (-b) option."
    So, if I understand you correctly, you are proposing to run this this script with the backout (-b) option on node 2, so interface names will match.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks.

I have combined the MEtalink doc:362135.1 and the docs describing building a 10gRAC "database" using VMware..I want to know if the below process is good enough to get the required results:
    Steps:
    -Install VMware on HOST m/c
    -Configure 1st virtual m/c, say RAC1
    -Install RHEL on RAC1
    -Install 11i with 9i database on the local SCSI bus- SCSI 0:0
    -Install VMware client tools
    -Create a new ethernet adapter(for private interconnect) on RAC1
    -Create shared disks on RAC1
    -Partition the disks
    -Add the disks as RAW devices in /etc/rawdevices
    -Clone RAC1 to a new virtual m/c,say RAC2
    -Delete the 11i apps directories from its local SCSI bus..since these would be redundant on RAC2
    -Install Clusterware s/w on RAC1 using the same oraInventory that is used by the Applications 11i installation-
    -Install the 10g DB software and create ASM instances using dbca
    -Install Database componenets from 10g companion CD
    -Upgrade CRS abd DB s/w to 10.2.0.4
    -Upgrade the 9i database to 10g using dbua from the 10g ORACLE_HOME
    -Convert the newly upgraded 10g databse to RAC using the rconfig tool
    -Post migration steps for RAC
    -Enable AutoConfig on the Applications Database tier
    - Follow the "Establish Applications Environment for RAC" section from Doc:362135.1
    -Configure PArallel Concurrent Processing(PCP)
    Thanks,
    Sandeep

    (Considering that there are only 2 nodes the scenario the steps would be as follows:
    1. Install RAC using the steps provided at the link:
    http://oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleDB10gR2RACInstallationOnCentos4UsingVMware.php
    2.On RAC1 create a single instance of Oracle 11i (Both DB and Apps are on the same node)
    3. Follow the steps outlined in the Note:362135.1
    One thing to note is that the steps are the same whether the nodes are real or virtual.

  • Upgrade Oracle 10g RAC - Oracle 11g RAC on Linux Environment

    We are planning to Upgrade our databases to Oracle 10g RAC - Oracle 11g RAC which is Linux Environment. Kindly suggest me the best option for migration. Our production database size is 80GB.
    - Frest installation of oracle 11g using export/iimport dumps
    - Migration
    - Upgrade process
    Any information regarding this will be appreciated.

    Pl identify exact versions of "10g" and "11g", along with the exact OS versions.
    Pl see the upgrade doc - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/toc.htm

  • How to start Oracle 10g RAC database and clusterware?

    I have steps to stop the 10g RAC Database and clusterware but not sure about starting it.
    I have heard executing
    $crsctl stop crs --as root
    on each node
    will start the database,asm,nodeapps .Is that true?
    or we have to do that step by step like we do in stopping the clusterware and database below
    1.Stop the agent:
    cd to $AGENT_HOME/corpng04.amhc.amhealthways.net/bin, then run: ./emctl stop agent
    2.Stop the full database
    $ oracle_home/bin/srvctl stop database -d db_name
    3.Stop the ASM Instances on node1,node2
    $ oracle_home/bin/srvctl stop asm -n node -- I guess you can't give multiple nodes in one command with comma,you need to give this multiple times with diff node name
    4.Stop the NodeApps :vip,listener,oms and gsd
    $ oracle_home/bin/srvctl stop nodeapps -n node -- I guess you can't give multiple nodes in one command with comma,you need to give this multiple times with diff node name
    5.Stop the CRS cluster processes :those bloody 3 evmd,ocssd,crsd
    $su - root
    $CRS_home/bin/crsctl stop crs

    before is shutting down crs i tend to stop the instances and services via srvctl then stop crs via crsctl
    just the way i do it. not saying it's the right way but it is the one i am comfortable with.Good -) If we stop CRS, but forgot shutdown oracle instances ... we'll see shutdown abort in alert log file(that mean instances are shutdowned abort).
    We should shutdown instance before stop CRS anyway.

  • Seeking a solid reccomendation concerning 10g RAC implementation.

    I need a solid recommendation regarding what hardware I should use for my planned Oracle 10g RAC environment.
    Currently, I am looking for both node and SAN recommendations.
    I also created a list of 11 questions that I need to have answered.
    Here is how this will be configured:
    3 Node Oracle 10g RAC
    Each Node will consist of:
    32Gb of RAM (minimum)
    Windows 2003 64-bit Enterprise (corporate standard, but I can go with Windows 2008 if I have a valid justification)
    74Gb RAID 1 (minimum)
    Dual 10Gb Ethernet NICs
    The SAN will consist of:
    750Gb-3Tb dedicated to Oracle
    10Gb Ethernet NICs
    Here are some of my general questions:
    1.) Are there any benchmarks or case studies that you are aware of that might help in the decision process regarding hardware?
    2.) Where should my backups reside (SAN or elsewhere)?
    3.) What margin should be added for SAN provisioning and waste (even if thin provisioning is implemented)?
    4.) My CIO has decided to direct me to go with 10GbE copper instead of fiber channel, what unplanned hiccups can I expect?
    5.) What are the caveats of running dual redundant SAN systems?
    6.) We are currently using DELL hardware for all other systems, however I do have the freedom to change the vendor for this particular project if I can state a valid business justification. Any other vendors out there that make a better SAN or Node solution than Dell/EMC?
    7.) How much local storage do I need on each node?
    8.) Can I utilize 1 node to run ETL during production hours without drastically affecting database performance?
    9.) Regarding the maintenance of this setup, are their any particular classes or training you would recommend? I am a seasoned Oracle DBA, but could use any specific training on the specifics of RAC and/or general performance.
    10.) Are there specific advantages in Oracle 11g RAC vs. 10g that would be worth the cost of upgrading our 1000+ 10g user licenses?
    11.) Are there any studies on the performance advantages/disadvantages of running Oracle 10g on Windows vs. Solaris (or any Unix)?
    I will consider all input of high value, so please let me know what you would recommend.
    Thank you for your time.

    please find answers that i know for some questions.
    1.) Are there any benchmarks or case studies that you are aware of that might help in the decision process regarding hardware?
    2.) Where should my backups reside (SAN or elsewhere)?
    => what is the backup method you will be using? certainly recommend RMAN (in addition to OS backups that you are planning to use) for block recovery, should there a block corruption.
    i would keep some copies on the SAN local and mirror to DR site too.
    3.) What margin should be added for SAN provisioning and waste (even if thin provisioning is implemented)?
    => do not suggest thin provisioning for production.
    how big the volumes are going to be? reason for asking the Q is, if the volumes are going to be in TB, percentages can be lower. please plan for 2 years atleast.
    => have beetween 75GB to 100GB. hope you are going to have only ORACLE RDBMS and CRS software in here.
    please make sure that you rotate your listener logs and alert logs and regular removal of old .trc files older than certain number of days old.
    8.) Can I utilize 1 node to run ETL during production hours without drastically affecting database performance?
    => node usage will help from CPU standpoint only. what about the disk writes it is going to perform to the data files?
    9.) Regarding the maintenance of this setup, are their any particular classes or training you would recommend? I am a seasoned Oracle DBA, but could use any specific training on the specifics of RAC and/or general performance.
    => attend a 5 day course from Oracle. install RAC on own and play with it.
    10.) Are there specific advantages in Oracle 11g RAC vs. 10g that would be worth the cost of upgrading our 1000+ 10g user licenses?
    => did not compare, though installed 11g.
    11.) Are there any studies on the performance advantages/disadvantages of running Oracle 10g on Windows vs. Solaris (or any Unix)?
    => running on windows? please do not. used on linux a lot. pretty stable and solid. recommend to go with 10.2.0.4 or higher.
    hope the above will help.
