11gR2 - ACMCA needs Oracle grid infrastructure to configure ASM

Hi
I am installing single instance oracle 11gR2 on linux redhat 5
I have problem with 11gr2 ASMCA.
I successfully installed 11gR2 oracle grid home.
Than i wanted to create the ASM diskgroup using asmca
The disks was succssefully discavered , but the creatation failed on the following error messages:
Oracle Grid infrastructure is not configured properly
ACMCA needs Oracle grid infrastructure to configure ASMI think it maight be related to root.sh problem.
1. where i can find the root.sh log output ?
2. Is it "safe" to rerun the root.sh once again ?
3. Could you please suggest what to check ?
Thanks

Hi There
You need to run root.sh script once again as root user. The script can be found immediately under the GRID home
for eg:/opt/11.2.0/grid/root.sh
upon running this script it will then ask u to run another script for Standalone servers
/opt/11.2.0/grid/perl/bin/perl -I/opt/11.2.0/grid/perl/lib -I/opt/11.2.0/grid/crs/install /opt/11.2.0/grid/crs/install/roothas.pl
You need to run this again as root user
This will configure the GRID infrastructure for a Standalone env.
After this you should be able to run ASMCA without any issues

• ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM - 11gR2 on SLES11

Hi,
I'm trying to install 11gR2 with ASM on a new SLES11 Server. So far i successfully installed the Database Software but struggle now when it comes to installing the Grid Infrastructure.
Partitioning and stamping the disks as ASM disks worked fine, oracleasm listdisks would give me my disknames as output.
So far so good - in the grid infrastructure installer i chose "install and configure grid infrastructure for a standalone server"
The setup was working, i executed the root.sh script without any issues - but configuring ASMCA failed with the following error:
INFO: Read: Error while detecting Oracle Grid Infrastructure. ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM.
Unfortunately i couldn't find a lot about it on the internet - i'm very stuck here..
Any ideas?
Andrea

i used raw devices in my first attempt - but read that it's not supported anymore - so i configured them as asm disks using the oracleasm tool.
which worked.. so the disks can not be the problem
i already read amans solution before posting here - but the problem in that thread was different - the guy installed the grid infrastructure software only and then tried to manually configure it, which failed.
His solution was to delete his previous install and choose '+Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server+' in the installer.
I already started my installation with Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server ... so that's no solution either :(

• ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM

Hi,
I am trying to install ASM 11gR2 on RHEL5. I am using VMWare Workstation for this.
I have already installed Oracle database software and Grid Infrastructure on this machine. While installing Grid Infrastructure, I chose install Grid Infrastructure software only.
Once this was successfull I am trying to create ASM instance using asmca.
Regarding the disks, I am using raw devices. I created a virtual disk which I have partitioned but haven't formatted it. Done this to create raw device
[root@localhost sysconfig]# /bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 16
and have added
ACTION=="add",KERNEL=="sdb",RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 %N"
to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-raw.rules
Then I tried creating the disk but it failed. So I did the following steps to fix it
[root@dhcppc2 Softwares]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb
Marking disk "VOL1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
[oracle@oracle11gR2 grid]$ tail -f /var/log/oracleasm
Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
To fix this
[root@localhost ~]# /usr/sbin/asmtool -C -l /dev/oracleasm -n VOL1 -s /dev/sdb -a force=yes
asmtool: Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
asmtool: Continuing anyway
Now I am able to view the asmdisk through listdisks option.
Have set following environment variables before running asmca
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/oracle/bin
When I am running ASMCA I am facing this error - Oralce Grid Infrastrcture is not configured properly. ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM
Any thoughts?

Hi Aman,
Thanks for the reply.
Is it possible to configure 11gR2 ASM on single instance databases ? I have done the config with 10g but I am struggling with the Grid Infrastructure. For eg: when I do deinstall of Grid Infrstructure

HI,
Before you proceed any further you need to know that Linux 6.0 is not certified yet against 11gR2

• Install Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 - Yes or No???

Hello,
We are setting up a new OEM Grid 12c system on Linux x86-64. We want to use it to manage several stand-alone, non-RAC, non-ASM database machines. The docs are unclear - do we have to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Release 2 on any of the database machines, including the machine that will support the OEM repository database, or not? Again, no plans to run Oracle Restart or Oracle ASM or Oracle RAC on that machine or any others.
The docs are not clear and we need a definitive answer.
Thank you, TL

Hello, OTN gurus.
Thanks for your attention to my original post. However, I am asking about a specific installation package called "Oracle Grid Infrastructure", which is separate from OEM Grid 12c and Oracle Database, and is supposed to be installed in its own home directory before the Oracle database software is installed in its oracle_home. "Oracle Grid Infrastructure" is also supposed to be installed in a different oracle_home from the OEM 12c Agent and a different oracle_home from Oracle Database, under specific conditions.
The docs say that you need Oracle Grid Infrastructure installed first in order to implement Oracle Restart and Oracle ASM for the Database. Other docs say you also need it for OEM Grid software. The docs are confusing on this point. I do not need Oracle Restart or Oracle ASM. I want to avoid installing this separate product, called Oracle Grid Infrastructure if I can. Does anyone know if a simple environment of Oracle Database 11gR2 (11.2.0.3), managed by OEM 12c OMS and Agents, requires "Oracle Grid Infrastructure"?
Thanks, TL

• RAC - Oracle Grid Infrastructure configure failed

Hi, am trying to install 2 node RAC on Oracle VMs. Before the installation during the -preinst check there were few issues which were resolved (ex user equivalence). After that during the installation process of the Grid it failed at step "Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a cluster". After it failed at this step, subsequent steps too failed which I asked OUI to ignore and then I ran both the post installation scripts. And then ran post crsinst which failed. Pasting below the output of the root.sh script, post crsinst and other checks.

before installation have u configure the private interconnect on both the nodes to same network adapter..
for example on node 1 if the private interconnect is on eth0 then on the node 2 it should use eth0 only...
for private interconnect use the hostonly option on both the nodes in the network configuration page of the vmware or virtual box..
and for public network it can be bridged
more over if you are installing on the laptop its good to configure the SSH using the OUI.. rather than doing it manually.. as it saves time
the private and the public networks should not have same range of ip address. like if public address are like 192.168.2.222/255.255.255.0 and private address have to be different like 10.10.1.2/255.0.0.0 (this is just an example)
have to configured the NTP.
any ways try installing the oracle rac on virtual box follow the steps given the below website they are pretty straight forward...

• Oracle Grid Infrastructure

Hi,
I'm trying to convince our systems administrator about the need for us to use Oracle Grid Infrastructure with our 11gR2 database installation. I find that I'm not really sure what the main advantages are, could you help please?
- What is the main advantage of Oracle Grid Infrastructure, what is it that will make me use it as opposed to conventional method of storage?
Any documentation recommendation would help please. I have been on the 11gR2 course and I have Oracle documentation but I am unable to see (or maybe it is lack of understanding) what is the main thing that will make us use it over an installation that uses file system storage.
thanks

I actually meant to copy and paste the benefits of using ASM out of it which answers the question OP had of using GRID for storage, (I had actually typed "see this bit") and was using the link as the reference, nont sure why I didnt, I mustnt have pasted properly into the post before posting. GRID as we know offers the asm usage which is the storage part of it. I have that link in my notes for reference when looking for the arguments to use ASM. From that link
•Provides automatic load balancing over all the available disks, thus reducing hot spots in the file system
•Prevents fragmentation of disks, so you don't need to manually relocate data to tune I/O performance
•Adding disks is straight forward - ASM automatically performs online disk reorganization when you add or remove storage
•Uses redundancy features available in intelligent storage arrays
•The storage system can store all types of database files
•Using disk group makes configuration easier, as files are placed into disk groups
•ASM provides stripping and mirroring (fine and coarse gain - see below)
•ASM and non-ASM oracle files can coexist
•ASM is free!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• Oracle grid infrastructure installation take long time on step 15 (perform prerequisite checks )

Oracle grid infrastructure installation take long time on step 15 (perform prerequisite checks )
I'm starting install and configure Oracle RAC 11gR2 on redhat 6.3 , when i reached step 15 (perform prerequisite checks ) it's taking long time more than 10 hours and still checking .... i closed it and start installation again it's same still waiting in perform prerequisite checks 75% complete
it is normal ?? what should i do ?? how i can monitoring installation steps and why this step take all this time please help .

Pl identify which exact version of 11gR2 - currently only 11.2.0.3 is certified/supported on Linux 6.x - Oracle® Database - if you are using 11.2.0.1 or 11.2.0.2, then you will need to use Linux 5.x

• How do I define 2 disk groups for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window

Hello,
It may sound too easy to someone but I need to ask it anyway.
I am in the middle of building Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Linux. I have 2 storage and I created three LUNs in each of storage so 6 LUNs in total look in both of servers. If I choose NORMAL as a redundancy level, is it right to choose my 6 disks those are created for OCR_VOTE at the grid installation? Or should I choose only 3 of them and configure mirroring at latter stage?
The reason why I am asking this is that I didn't find any place to create asm disk group for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window. In fact, I would to like to create two disk groups in which one of groups contains three disks those were brought from storage 1 and the second one contains rest three 3 disk that come from the last storage.
I believe that you will understand the manner and help me on choosing proper way.
Thank you.

Hi,
You have 2 Storage H/W.
You will need to configure a Quorum ASMDisk to store a Voting Disk.
Because if you lose 1/2 or more of all of your voting disks, then nodes get evicted from the cluster, or nodes kick themselves out of the cluster.
You must have the odd number of voting disk (i.e 1,3 or 5) one voting disk per ASM DISK, So 1 Storage will hold more voting disk than another storage.
(e.g 3 Voting Disk - 2 voting stored in stg-A and 1 voting disk store in stg-B)
If fail the storage that hold the major number of Voting disk the whole cluster (all nodes) goes down. Does not matter if you have a other storage online.
It will happen:
https://forums.oracle.com/message/9681811#9681811
You must configure your Clusterware same as RAC extended

• I cannot find Oracle Grid Infrastructure Patch Set 2 for windows x64

So maybe i'm stupid, but i've searched metalink every way i can think of to find the patches mentioned in the following preinstall instructions for 11.2.0.2 for windows
"To upgrade Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.1 to Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.2, you must first do at least one of the following:
* Patch the Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.1 home with the patch 9413827 and patch 9706490.
* Install Oracle Grid Infrastructure Patch Set 1 (GI PSU1) or Oracle Grid Infrastructure Patch Set 2 (GI PSU2)."
I've searched in Patches and Updates and https://updates.oracle.com.
I've got a 2 node 11gR2 (11.2.0.1) RAC on Windows 2k8 that i want to patch to 11.2.0.2 before implementing as production. I can find all the Unix flavored patches, but not the Windows Patch.
Feel free to make fun of me for using Windoze or not knowing how to use metalink, whatever you like, as long as you include a url to the Patch I'm looking for.
thanks
John

The first thing that i tried was the out-of-place upgrade, which failed 3/4 of the way through. This left me with a circumstance where i couldn't use srvctl to administer my RAC because of version mismatched files. The RAC appeared to be up but administering it was impossible no matter what home i set. I deinstalled 11.2.0.2 grid and the 2nd node of my RAC was broken and couldn't see the ASM instance at all. i actually had to modify the windows registry to get the 2nd node to behave properly.
That's when i read more carefully the installation instructions for the upgrade and came across the text i included.
"To upgrade Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.1 to Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.2, you must first do at least one of the following:
Patch the Oracle Grid Infrastructure release 11.2.0.1 home with the patch 9413827 and patch 9706490.
Install Oracle Grid Infrastructure Patch Set 1 (GI PSU1) or Oracle Grid Infrastructure Patch Set 2 (GI PSU2).
Adding nodes to a cluster during a rolling upgrade is not supported.#
Oracle Clusterware and Oracle ASM upgrades are always out-of-place upgrades. With Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g release 2 (11.2), you cannot perform an in-place upgrade of Oracle Clusterware and Oracle ASM to existing homes."
This mentions both the out-of-place upgrade and the need for the intermediate patches to be installed first. I'm not sure what to believe at this point. I read the above instructions as saying the intermediate patches need to be installed BEFORE the out-of-place upgrade would be successful, but i can't say that i understand why that would be the case.
Has someone done a successful upgrade on Windows from 11.2.0.1 directly to 11.2.0.2?
I appreciate y'all's help.
thanks,
JR

• Oracle Grid Infrastructure Query !!

Hi
I have a requirement to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure software on SUN SPARC v11. I would like to know, Whether the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1.0) for Solaris Operating System (x86-64) ) is compatible with Oracle 11.2.0.4 Database version ?
From where can I download the link for the same ?
Regards,
Chan

I would like to know, Whether the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1.0) for Solaris Operating System (x86-64) ) is compatible with Oracle 11.2.0.4 Database version ?
No, it is not compatible. You cannot have database version that is higher than the GI version. If you want to run an Oracle 11.2.0.4 database, then GI needs to be *at least* 11.2.0.4 as well. It can be 12.1 if needed/desired.
From where can I download the link for the same ?
From My Oracle Support, you can download the 11.2.0.4 version of both the database and GI software. This link shows you how to obtain the patchset.
Obtain Database Patchsets » Peasland Database Blog
Files 1of7 and 2of7 are the 11.2.0.4 version of the database. File 3of7 is the 11.2.0.4 version of GI.

Check the logfiles under $GRID_HOME/log/<node_name>/cssd/
I had seen the same problem and the following resolved the problem for me.
[root@rac1 ~]# rm -f /usr/tmp/.oracle/* /tmp/.oracle/* /var/tmp/.oracle/*
[root@rac1 ~]# > $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/<node_name>/cssd/<node_name>.pid
