My display went up in flames which is something I have never experienced or had ever heard of, luckily i was home and nothing else including the hard drive was damaged. I went to the apple store with the intension of buying a new monitor and soon wanting to upgrading to a Mac Pro G5. I first found that my Power Mac G4 is not compatible with a new Mac displays, due to the fact that the new displays are digital and as a Graphic designer i would not be getting the full graphic potential of a digital display on a analog hard drive. Being a brand loyalist, I would never consider anything other then Mac, sad enough I found that my Mac is more compatible with a PC monitor, then with its own brand... The Mac genius, barer of bad news, didn't stop there, I really was not prepared for what i was about to hear, but then heard it in slow motion coming out of his mouth "Mac pro G5 is not compatible with CS 2 Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, After Effects, nor with older versions of Macromedia Flash, Director and so on and so on..."
A $12,000 upgrade is a great down payment on a S class Benz not a computer thats for personal use.

At the risk of repeating some of what Forrest has mentioned...
From the dual 450MHz processors it sounds as if you have a 'Gigabit Ethernet' G4 model. This was amongst the first to support digital displays. The stock graphics card should have an ADC connector, allowing you to connect Apple's older style clear acrylic displays. With the use of a relativley cheap ADC to DVI extractor cable, you should also be able to connect Apple's newer style aluminium displays. You would just need to check whether the graphics card supports the resolution of some of the bigger displays though. If not, a replacement graphics card would be one option. In a sense some older Macs are more compatible with VGA/analogue PC monitors, as Apple moved onto digital years ago whereas PCs are still catching up.
In terms of software, with the new Intel based Macs such as the Mac Pro, you could either migrate your existing software to universal binary versions which will run natively on both platforms (PowerPC and Intel), or run your existing software under emulation using Rosetta. I expect most people do both, running under emulation to begin with and then migrating as and when they can afford to. Note there are G5s which are PowerPC based and Mac Pros which are Intel based, strictly speaking there isn't such a thing as a Mac Pro G5. Another option would be to buy a second hand or refurbished G5, which would allow you to run all your existing software natively.
I think it's also fair to say CS is primarily aimed at the professional, as are the Mac Pro and G5. They are expensive for personal use full stop.

I upgraded RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb on a 3 months-old MacBook Pro. Before that, my battery used to last 6-7hs and now it hardly lasts 3.5Hs

As a developer, I give the Mac an instensive use, runing an Oracle database within a Windows XP (I'm sorry) virtual machine with VMWare.
At the same time I run Oracle Reports and Oracle SQL Developer on the MAC side and TeamViewer to connect to my remote customers' servers.
Before upgrading RAM, the memory usage used to be 100% and the performance was poor. Now the performance is much better, the memory usage is around 75% but the battery is much weaker. Shouldn't be the other way around, as now the hard disk RAM pagination should be less?
Is that normal???? What can I do, other than going back to 4Gb and see what happens? Will it help if I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

I am worried I am having the exact same problem with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. I purchased an SSD from Crucial as well as two 8GB RAM sticks, which upgraded my RAM from a total of 4 GB to a total of 16 GB. I swapped the drive and RAM when I received my order in late February. Now, just a couple of weeks later, I am experiencing issues. The fan seems to be running a lot more often, and yesterday my MacBook went haywire. Is anyone else annoyed that you can't open a normal file with preview in CS6 on the Windows platform

Please, please , please restore the the ability of Photoshop to open with a preview on windows machines. That is; a single click on a file from within Photoshop gives a small preview image to tell you what it is you are opening. This is crucial to professional photographers in the industry working quickly with lots of images as I do in the medical/scientific photography field.
Every other version of Photoshop has had this feature and I can tell you a lot of power users like myself are not using CS6 just because a single click doesn't preview what you are opening. My company just spent $10,000 upgrading six machines and no-one is using CS6 for work - they are sticking with CS5. CS6 is only good for 'playing around' with photos, if production is key, then to save time, we need to see what we are opening on a single click - it's a no brainer! Check the forums to see this that is true, and if you are reading this and agree with me, write and tell adobe to fix this - pronto!

Thanks for correcting my quote/unquote quotes. Yes you are right. Not a very good use of them. I took time out to look at your photos. Very nice. I also play around with photoshop on my ladscape and fine art photos when I am not trying to make a living (that is paying my mortgage, sending kids to school buying food etc). I exhibit these in galleries and enjoy the luxury of spending the extra time on them - they even sell occassionaly.
Sorry if you were offended by the use of the term playing around with photoshop. Obviously your work is very nice. Unfortunatly I cannnot show you the work I do at work because of patient confidentiallity and, quite frankly, the images are mostly gross anatomy, wounds, lots of blood - not the sort of thing I like to share unless you are a health professional.
Anyway, since you have posted, can you help me with the problem is the question I beg to ask.

Farsi Titles in Premiere Pro CS6

I've seen a few posts that seem to be relevant but offer no conclusion about how to create Farsi subtitles in premiere pro CS6. I've seen many posts about persian font being reversed in adobe software, so that might be my next problem.
Adobe phone support offers no suggestions.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks but no cigar, Joe Bloe. Shortly after post #9 is post #14 in which they conclude that it's not possible to work with arabic subtitles in premiere pro. Adobe tech support was also not able to point them in the right direction.

Thanks Alan, Sorry I took a while to repsond - I've just spent 1 hour 18 minutes on the phone with Adobe (their bill).Turns out that what I am asking for is altogether impossible in CS5 (Premiere, PhotoShop Indesign etc.). It is also not possible in PPro CS6 but is possible in Photoshop CS6. So they suggested I spend just short of $1,000 upgrading my Master Collection CS5 to CS6! Other than that, they had no solution for me. On another forum someone suggested importing a .pdf to Photoshop and importing crops of that image into PPro. It works but my word it's laborious! Your suggestion might well work (you are a genius so it's likely) but I do not read Arabic and would not recognise a non-proportional Arabic font if it turned up in my Aphabetti Spaghetti! So, thanks for your input - I'm now a day behind schedule so I'm going to go the PDF / Photoshop route. Wish me luck.

Sorry I can't help any further, but my exposure to Arabic is zero too - just a flight from the UK to New Zealand and back via Dubai on Emirates. I had about enough exposure to the safety video in Arabic to recognise some of the spiel in Arabic by the end of the reurn flight!
My dodge with highlighting just the widely spaced characters and turning down (i.e. making nearer to zero), the kerning for those characters alone works for I's etc in English, but I haven't tried it with Arabic.

Discoverer Plus 10g Title & Table Viewing Size

Is there a way to increase the screen resolution of the title and table area in Discoverer Plus 10g? The font size says 10pt, but on the screen it looks more like 4pt. I couldn't find any settings in Plus to change it. Thanks, Amy.

Cause
By default in Discoverer Plus 10.1.2 fonts are rendered smaller in Java
than in other Windows applications.
Already saved workbooks will not have any change in font and formats even if
your default fonts are changed unless these workbooks are explicitly opened and
modified for using new fonts. The cause for this behavior is that when
workbooks are saved, font information is also along with it. This is very lengthy approach if you have over 1,000 upgraded workbooks.
Solution
To implement the solution, for existing/upgraded workbooks please execute the following steps:
Set AdjustPlusFontSize = "True" in pref.txt file.
This setting will make Discoverer Plus to display the font size correctly. It specifies whether Discoverer Plus Relational adjusts the font size to correct a discrepancy in the Java virtual machine, resulting in a smaller font size than other Windows applications.
true = adjust font sizes
false = do not adjust font sizes
1.Navigate to <Discoverer Home>/discoverer/util directory.
2.Edit pref.txt file and modify the setting as
AdjustPlusFontSize = "true"
under [Application] section
3.Run the script applypreferences.sh

Time Machine Restore and now says Scanner not found - when trying to use

the printers.
Had a faulty harddrive -(per the apple store - this after replacing the screen and logic board...) - so they installed a new one - I restored from my time machine backup - and then went to use my HP 1315 Scanner. Didn't work - get error - scanner not found - even though I can print to the device.
So - I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer in the system preferences - but get same error - so instead I uninstalled all the HP apps and reinstalled them (a pain because HP doesn't make 10.5 software yet).
Still same issue - Scanner not found.
I was using this same scanner prior to the hard drive freeze. HP posts a notice that if you really want the hp software to work you should downgrade to Tiger, install, then reupgrade - but that seems like a lot of hassle to get a scanner to work.
Does anyone have another suggestion?

I wish Profile allowed to list all of my computers and all of My OS systems - but it doesn't - so I'm forced to post each and every time whatever OS is causing whatever issue I'm having.
I have deleted and reinstalled several times to no avail. I do get an error on install that the HPIOX cannot launch...

Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.

[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case. I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.
I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.

I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.
I thought that once I started using iCloud, I didn't need to sync with iTunes anymore--guess I was wrong.

Try a reset ..
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
See if that makes a difference ..

why do you make life difficult when you issue upgrades . Surely you should check that they do what you say they will do!!
IiPhoto becomes photo , easy peasy you say photos from iPhoto library will automatically transfer across to photos .
bit of a let down when you find that out of 20,000+ photographs NOT ONE was transferred from iPhoto library . I take it that I have got to sit in front of my screen and transfer one by one , because to my horror tried to update from my Time Machine back up it does not transfer album data across at all . Heart felt thanks for that guys !
ALso so some of the shots won't transfer because metadata is compromised .
CAn I revert to Iphoto and get rid of photo ?

You have to open your iPhoto library with Photos to convert it to the Photos format. Launch Photos with the Option key held down and check to see how many libraries are presented in the window. If there is a Photos library open it to see if there's any photos. If not then you haven't opened the iPhoto Library with Photos to convert it. So launch Photos again with the Option key held down, select the iPhoto Library and let it convert.
Also, the iPhoto application is still in the Applications folder. It was just replaced in the Dock with Photos. If you were using iPhoto 9.6.1 before upgrading to 10.10.3 you can still use it with your iPhoto Library.

Extract the photos from the phone to your computer like you would with any other digital camera.
PhotoStream is NOT permanent storage and iCloud photos is in beta, meaning it's not fully cooked yet and you may lose data stored in it.

Thanks one again. I know you helped me the last to. I do have the Deja Vu font set in my folder. I downloaded and the last time. So I don't know if there is supposed to be more or not, but those were installed with Windows-XP after my reformat.
This is really driving me nuts. as I've done several re-formats on my computer and several friends computers and even upgraded hardware so I am not necessarily a software or programming expert, I am somewhat advanced when it comes to computers in general and can usually diagnose the problem but these font's are the problem and they never were before.
I did see in another forum that if you had a Dell Computer and did the Microsoft update for the onboard video card driver that it could be the culprit, but I have that disabled being I have a much better graphics card so the updates from Microsoft for the onboard video weren't installed.
It' a Dell Dimension 3000 with an Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller so I don't believe it is the culprit being it is disabled. The actual video card that I am using is a PCI Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT with 1 GB Memory. And I didn't have any problem before.
I appreciate the help. But still can't get things to work. Live Help Chat doesn't open for another two hours so maybe they can do "Remote Access" or something and can check setting and help me. But if you come up with other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Upgraded to 7.0.2 - Duplicates made of my 47,000 songs - how to mass delete

I upgraded to 7.0.2 of Itunes - for some reason none of my songs were recognized on my external drive - could not play any songs - reconverted to AAC - now I have duplicates of 47,000+ songs - want to erase the versions that won't play - the one's with the little "!" and gray circle around it - is there a way to mass delete and put everything back in order - without going through each song to delete "unrecognizable" version? All my playlist now have the version that doesn't play (with the playable version in library). Plus, when I reconnect to slave drive, will I encounter this problem all over again. Should I turn this Dell into a paperweight and just by a MAC? This goes along with my other question.

I'm figuring it out a little bit - appears my music files transfered to the C: Drive - so now I have identical files on the C: Drive and the G: Drive. Want to manage all music on the G: Drive (External Hard Drive)...do I need to delete current library, delete C: Drive music files and start from scratch with existing raw, unconverted external hard drive? Or should I delete everything on the G: Drive and export everything in Itunes to there? Not sure if that'll solve my "duplicate 47,000 songs" issue.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the other music is not on the iPod or on the computer you will have to get it from where you obtained it the first time.

Administrator.000 appeared after XP to Win7 upgrade using Easy Transfer Wizard

I used the Windows Easy Transfer method to capture my XP documents and settings in a saved file before upgrading to Windows 7 (32bit). After a clean install I then ran Windows Easy Transfer to restore my documents and settings from the file created earlier. Everything worked fine but I did notice that in the C:\Users directory an extra Administrator.000 directory was created with the date and time matching the time when I ran Easy Transfer wizard. Is it safe to delete this extra one and leave the original Administrator directory?
