15" MBP screen goes strippy

Hi !
When I powered it on, the screen went light grey, apple logo came on, little scrolling wheel ticked but then it gave me vertical strippy wallpapper with a message in 4 different languages telling me I "need to restart your computer. hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
1) Did that (obviously)
2) Took out the batteries, did the "pressing the power boutton for 5s" thingy
3) Left it on full charge before powering it again
4) With or without power power cable on
5) Various combinations of all above, with fingers crossed, then legs, then asking my daughter to press the boutton for me and so on . . . (haven't sacrificed any anymals over it yet though . . . should I ? . . . )
Anyway . . .s till get the same screen.
6) Tried to access it with my iMac via my wireless router using screen sharing and it didn't connect.
7) Linked it via firewire to my iMac first without pressing the T. Screen gets light shade of grey, fan kicks in but nohting else happens. No apple logo, no ticking wheel. . . and no stripes anymore.
8) Linked it via firewire to iMac this time pressing the T. This time I get the moving firewire logo and I can access the hard drive as normal.
Am running a full backup on an external HD right now before I book an appointment with a Genius at my nearest Apple store.
Any idea/suggestions would be much appreciated before I go there.
Thanks
D

It is definitely a hardware problem with the machine.  See my FAQ*:

  • MBP screen goes dark - only when plugged in

Hi, my four year old MBP 15" hasn't given me any trouble until now.
Recently I have only been able to use the mac on battery power as the screen goes almost completely dark once I plug it in. I have changed the settings in system preferences within power and displays, however this hasn't solved the problem.
Prior to taking it to a repair shop, do you have any suggestions what is triggering the light to go dark ? Thanks in advance.

Hi f, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like it could be a bad inverter board, but I don't know if that would cause it to happen only while using the power adapter. Depending on your exact model, it could be:

  • MBP Screen goes black and then restores.  NVIDIA graphics card issue?

    I've got a mid-2007 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, running 10.6.2.
Over the past couple of days I am having random losses of video screen. I will be on a webpage, doing nothing with it, and the screen will go momentarily black. It normally lasts for a few seconds, then restores. Nothing I do seems to affect the blacking out or the restoration.
I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card.
Any suggestions / input on whether I am experiencing the failure? FWIW, computer is still under Applecare.
    Thanks

    See this KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I have similar issues with my MBP. However there is also a widespread issue on the forums in which the trackpad and keyboard stops responding, and it may be difficult to tell if the problem is loss of video or loss of input ability when the display goes to sleep automatically. I'm currently in this boat. I'm not quite sure if I have a video problem of if this is the issue with the trackpad/keyboard connection.
The video card issue appears that apple will pay for out of warranty but they are not addressing the widespread problem with trackpad and keyboard loss of function and if you are out of warranty you are out of luck.

  • HELP! MBP Screen Going Crazy!

    Hi Everyone,
Been having screen problems with my MBP 2.66 Core i7 the past couple months. The computer's barely a year old and I've kept it in pristine condition.
Problem is, I'll be surfing or doing Photoshop editing and all of a sudden, whichever window I have open in front of me "looks" like it starts to duplicate itself again and again onscreen, then in random order, completely filling the 17" screen with garble, even covering the dock - a complete mess!
After about 5 seconds, if I mouse over the dock, it appears as normal...if I choose Safari, my latest Safari browser comes to the forefront and "hides" the remaining screen mess behind it, same if I continue to choose other dock items already open. But then again within 10 seconds, the scattered mess begins all over again and takes over my entire screen. Sound familiar to anyone?
I've rebooted, run sbin/, repaired permissions, run Drive Genius, etc. My MBP i7 runs both the Intel HD Graphics and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics. When this started a couple months ago, it happened maybe once in 3 weeks...now it happens every 2 days. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Yes, from what you tell it sounds like you have too.
If the store you bought it at are closer, then they should be helpful with getting it repaired/sent away for repair. - But here in Norway I just contact the care point and send it/bring it myself because it takes less time..

  • MBP Chimes but screen goes to black.

Having not used a Mac in many years, I'm not sure what I'm looking at for a problem. There are many postings with similar titles but I haven't found much in the way of details.
My son's early 2011 MBP 15" chimes, displays the gray screen with Apple logo and spinning gear, and then when it should display the desktop the screen goes black. A few seconds later the keyboard lights come on but the Apple logo on the cover goes off.  We've zapped and reset everything according to Apple and various web sites.
The OS came installed on this and I have no CDs. I did try booting it up on an Ubuntu CD. The machine did not boot fully but it did display a full color screen when Ubuntu was attempting to load. After that it dropped out to BusyBox but I was able to interact with the machine from the BB command line (e.g. navigating through the CD file structure, issues basic Unix commands).
Booting with Command-R produces little difference. Chimes, displays the gray screen and gear, and then displays black. The one small difference is that the keyboard lighting does not come on and it does not appear to go as far into it's startup sequence as it does when booting off of the regular HD (e.g. pushing the volume keys produces no sound, the eject button won't eject a CD etc.)
Booting with the Option key down displays the Mac HD, Recovery HD, and our wireless network. None of those choices produces any difference though the wireless does seem to connect up properly
I assume if the hard drive had failed completely then I would not see it on the Option boot display. I'm assuming that the 'Recovery HD' is a partition on the HD, so if the HD is running but the file systems are corrupt that might explain why they produce the same result. I'm not sure what the Command-R boot is supposed to do.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? It would seem I need to boot this up off of a CD to see if I can access the HD but I'm not a Mac guy. I do have access to a late 2011 MBP 13" but that also had the OS installed and came with no disks.

I was hoping that with the 10.10.1 update that this issue would be fixed. I may have discovered what is happening though.
I tried doing the above with the C-Span site. It worked! My MBP screen didn't go black and I could click on things there and it wouldn't lose the full-screen on the Apple TV. Good.
I then tried the RT USA feed where I first noticed this. Going full-screen on the tv made my MBP screen go black. SO, I am assuming this is a RT problem.
Am I right? (I have written them and hope to hear back.)
I also noticed that when clicking on the "computer" icon on Apple TV's menu, it tells me to turn on Home Sharing even though it is on. I indulged. I turned off home sharing in iTunes and turned it back on. Apple TV said it couldn't find my home library. OK.
I then played a movie, choosing the Apple TV on iTunes and it played!
So, Apple TV IS seeing my iTunes library so Home Sharing must be working even though Apple TV doesn't think so. Right?
I guess I'll ignore the message that says it can't find my home library and just do what I want to do. It would be nice if this was fixed though.
    Any ideas from others?
    Cheers,
    John

  • My MBP's screen goes pink

When I plugged the charger and turn the power on, my mid 2009 MBP's screen goes pink completely.
I thought it caused by software problems so I restart, but the screen is still pink.
    What should I do now?

It may be that the MBP overheated and that the internal shut down was engaged.  Run an Apple Hardware Test and see if it develops any issues:

    Ciao.
The test may have to be started by pressing the OPTION D keys.

  • MBP retina: wifi drops out when screen goes dark

    Hi there,
I've got a MBPr 15inch with the latest OSX version (incl. updates).
When my screen goes dark after 10 minutes of inactivity, my WIFI connection *always* drops out. So if I'm syncing something over Dropbox for instance, it will stop working. I basically have to make sure my laptop never goes inactive for too long. This is really annoying and one of a few other problems I'm having with this MBPr.
I've searched these forums, and there are people with similar or related problems but I couldn't find any solution yet.
Anyone else out there similar problems?
    Thanks,
    Kai

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro crash - screen goes black

There is a major problem with the mid 2010 Mac Book Pro's and Lion.  I suspect that it is related to the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB video card and perhaps the i7 processor.  The crashes are random and most often occur after a mouse click then the screen suddenly goes black and a restart is forced.  There is a thread on MacRumors that describes many others with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1182104
The crash occurs less frequently when the power and external monitors are connected.  When the MBP is unteathered it crashes every 20 minutes.  I am really surprised and disappointed that a bug this severe made it through final testing. Looking forward to 10.7.1.
    Scott

im so glad im not the only one with this problem. at least i know its not because some careless things i unconciously did that makes my mac gone berzerg like this.
i also encounter the exact same problem with all of you. problems started a month ago. at first it was just once in a while then it became a frequent thing especially when my battery left with 20-30%. then after i plugged in the magsafe, its okay. lately, nothing safes the mac from crashing, particularly when im running adobe and/or autocad. i thought it was software problems so i backed up my files, performed erase and install snow leopard then made an even bigger mistake by upgrading to lion. after finish upgrading, the crashings got even more often. every starting up, after i got a glimpse of login in, pufffttt, screen goes black but keyboard still on. googled it up and say reseting smc will do the trick. eeekkkk nothing! then resetting the pram. worked okay for quite some times then puufffttt, crash! ask a question on yahoo answers and got a help from lovely person to install gfsxcard-something and told to opt for integrated only. worked fine for 2 days and still went back to crashing. opened up the mac, testing each rams, reshuffling em, still got nothing. the only thing that enables me to do my work with this Majestic mac is resetting pram everytime i turn it on.
since im living in singapore (bought this mac june'09 in melbourne, australia), there is no genius bar to be found, running a diagnostic only at any apple service cost me 120 bucks and if i have to change the logicboard, its gonna cost me ard 1000++ dollas since i dont have any applecare and my warranty expired 4mnths ago. so, i might be killing myself soon! yauuzaaaa

  • Screen going crazy, pink horizontal lines, frequent random crashes?

    Hi all,
First post here... I felt compelled to post as usually Googling a problem will bring me to a solution from one of these discussions but in this case there are many similar instances of my problem but no-one seems to be able to offer an explanantion that fits my particular circumstances.
    I have a late 2011 MBP 15"
    Processor = 2.2 GHz i7
    Memory = 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics = Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    OS = OS X 10.9.2
Recently, my screen started randomly going crazy, all blocky and with horizontal pink lines all over. Then it would go either fully black or fully white. This usually happens when I open another tab or app. Sometimes it crashes and powers off. Sometimes it restarts.
If it powers off and I restart it or it restarts itself, the horizontal pink lines appear on the startup/spinning gear screen.
Then the screen goes fully white and the fans go crazy. Now it sometimes just stays hung like this and sometimes it powers off after about 3 minutes of crazy fans.
I switch it back on and it does the same thing.
It gets stuck in this loop for ages and often, if I just leave it and come back to it some other time, it powers up just fine however sometimes it will continue to refuse to power up.
If I try to boot into recovery mode, it blue screens.
If I try to boot into safe mode, it blue screens.
If I try diagnositics, it blue screens.
What could the problem be and how do I fix it?

I've had a similar issue with my mid-2012 13" non-retina MacBook Pro twice. First time I dropped it and it fell hard ( I mean it fell down a flight of stairs). It sounds like your graphics card and/or logic board and possibly the RAM sticks might have an issue. For me, a new logic board costs about $480 but Apple covered it twice since its less than a year old. Other issues I've had it would have a "checker-board" on startup and it would have a similar glitch when I would move it or set it down. It would also freeze and even shut down. I've also pulled it out of my bag, and it would be a lot hotter than when I put it in. I'd say set up a Genius Bar appointment or take it to a local certified apple service technician or if you really wanted to, setup an appointment and find out what's wrong and then repair it yourself, just make sure your data is backed up. I would suggest back it up to both iCloud and an external hard drive that can hold more data than the internal drive on your mac.

  • HT201343 AirPlay Mirroring. The ATV3 screen goes black.

When my mid MBP 2011 connects via AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion.  The screen goes black. It has worked before. Now it doesn't.  I checked firewall, graphics switching and rebooting all devices.
Streaming via iTunes works fine. ATV3 can access my MBP's library.
    thanks!

    Problem solved... sorta!
It appears that Parallels 7 is not compatible with Airplay Desktop Mirroring in ML
If you remove this file com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist
    inside
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    then reboot.
ATV3 now works again with Airplay Mirroring.
However, it breaks Parallels.  And you simply cannot put the com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist file back inside /Library/Daemons.  You need to re-install Parrallels. Could be a permissions thing, but I tried to repaire and follow Parallels instructions on how to start and stop the service.
I Hope this helps save someone some time...

  • Mp4 on ipad - screen goes black

    Hi all,
I have some 'home movies' that i'd like on my ipad (wedding video - nothing sinister). It works in itunes, it works on my iphone but when i transfer it to the iPad and press play, the screen goes black and i can hear the sound, just not see the video. It also doesn't let me pause or show any of the usual icons that show when you touch the screen.
Do you think i need to do something difeent for the iPad than the iPhone?
    The videos are .MP4
    Video Codec - H.264
    Thanks for any help!

What program did you use too get to the format you loaded in iTunes and what output did you specify? Also, what are some other specifics such as framerate and audio format. They have to meet:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • Screen goes dim when processor working - even when plugged to mains power.

Screen goes dim when processor working - even when plugged to mains power.
Whether I'm running 3D software or just surfing the net, the screen keeping fading/dimming and then recovering over a few seconds. No USB devices connected, mains power on - NOT IMPRESSED!
Any ideas - a hardware problem? Back to Mac?

If you go to System Preferences > Energy Saver, the is a checkbox under the "options" tab that says, "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep." On my new MBP (10.5.1), this was "on" by default. Try unchecking it and see if it helps.

  • MacBook Pro, randomly Windows 7 doesn't start and screen goes blank

Hi, I installed Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) using the BootCamp on my MacBook Pro (MBP) i7, mid 2010. Installation was successful without any issues. This is my first Mac and, for now, I primarily use Windows on my MBP. The problem: After selecting Windows OS, randomly, Windows doesn't start and the screen goes blank. When this happens, most of the time I have to press the power button twice and press the Option key again to restart in Windows. Sometimes I have to hold down power button for several seconds to turn off MBP, then power it back on to start over. Windows 7 seems to restart on second try every time.
I can tell when the screen will go blank and Windows will not start, when the blinking cursor does not appear on upper left corner of the screen. Also, I enabled Windows OS Boot Log and nothing displays when this happens.
I took in my MBP, twice, to local Apple store Genius Bar and I was told that it was a Windows problem and I must purchase AppleCare Protection Plan to get help resolving the blank screen. It was explained to me that AppleCare had Windows experts who can help with resolving the issue. Therefore I purchased the AppleCare Protection Plan and spoke to AppleCare directly and still no resolution.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is a forum specifically for Boot Camp, this is a general MBP forum and most of us don't use Boot Camp or Windows. The link to that forum is:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
Apple does support Boot Camp however if your problem is with Windows Apple does not support a Microsoft product. You would need to contact Microsoft for help.
