16:9 aspect ratio - export to DVD

We want to produce some DVDs in 16:9 which play on a widescreen TV properly ie filling up all the screen and not warped in any way. also we would like the DVD to play on a regular 4:3 TV as letterboxed, and on a computer as 16:9
We filmed the production in DVCAM 16:9, digitised in as 16:9, and edited in FCP as 16:9.
At this point we have been trying with different settings and methods of exporting, we have tried using compressor, then to DVDSP, or as QT to Toast.
Results so far - all warped in some way, either letterboxed, stretched, zoomed, pillarboxed or a combination of the above.
Does anyone know of exactly what settings we need to use to get our project onto DVD in widescreen?
The proj is 2.5hrs long, we work in PAL and we are using FCP Version 6.0.2, Compressor Version 3.0.2 DVDSP Version 4.2.1
Thanks to anyone who can help
Meris

This has always worked for me:
FCP: File Export QTMovie... current settings.
COMPRESSOR: 16:9 High Quality 90 minute (choose ac3 for your audio in here)
Then, in DVDSP make sure the setting is correct in the above window.
Also - check your preview (forgot what it's called)you can change it to widescreen also. Dbl check there that indeed all is good.
Then, as said above also - run it on DVDPlayer in your applications folder. Don't watch it FULL screen, watch it as a window in your finder. There you'll get a read on EXACTLY what the dvd is sending... if you see a 4:3 window with letterboxing something is wrong. You should (SHOULD) see a 16:9 window with no distortion or letterboxing.
Once you determine that, the issue will be your setup of DVD player and TV.

  • DVR620 incorrect aspect ratio when recording DVD or VHS

I have a DVR620KU connected to a Sony Digital LCD Bravia TV, Sony HT-CT100 Home Theater system and a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300HDC cable box.  I am using HDMI cables except for the connection from the "out" on cable box to the "in" on the DVR620.   When recording from a broadcast program or DVR'd(cable box) program, the picture on the TV while recording, and the DVD or VHS recording when played back, have letterbox like bars top and bottom and the aspect ratio for the picture is stretched.  I have tried eliminating the Home Theater system, but that doesn't help.  Other than that, things work as they are supposed to, including viewing a commercially recorded DVD.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It does mean that the DVR620 is not the problem.
I don't have the same cable box as yours. Mine is an Explorer 4250HDC. Even if they were same, however, I believe different cable systems will handle things differently.
I'm on Time-Warner Cable in central NC. I have that big universal remote model URSU-8800L-TWR.
When I press SETTINGS, I get the Settings menu. On the bottom of the screen is Quick Settings. If I press right arrow several times, I get to High Definition. The choices are AutoHD, Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, and Output Resolution. The choices for AutoHD are on/off. I'm using on.  Picture Size are Zoom, Normal, and Stretch. I am using Normal. Aspect Ratio choices are 4x3 and 16x9. I am using 4x3. Output resolution should probably be 480i for recording to the DVR620. Note that on the NBC channel currently there is letterboxing on the top and bottom. There is no distortion or stretching. I don't see a way to avoid the letterboxing.
Part of the problem with making these changes is that they will affect all output from the cable box, so your HD signal to your TV might not be as good.

  • Solution for Aperture's aspect ratio/export bug?

take an image, then use the crop tool to crop it to a 'perfect' 2x3 or 3x2 aspect ratio.
    now export the image.
    my case?
Canon 350D images, cropped to 2x3, exported to 'within 750x510' with the purpose of getting an image of 340x510 pixels.
    the result? 340x509.
the only way to get a correct export size is to manually change the crop dimensions in the HUD; very inefficient; and sometimes this doesn't work either. rather than getting 340x510, Aperture sometimes skips to 339x510.
it's especially difficult to export images in my favourite mobile size: 174x204, even when using the equivalent 29:34 aspect ratio to crop the image.
    any ideas?

    found it.
first, I had to extend the length parameter of the Export preset far beyond my goal of 204 pixels and rely on the 174 width and aspect ratio to automatically calculate the final exported length of 204.
next, I had to manually increase the crop length of the image, 1 or 2 pixels at a time, and export each time until Aperture exported my exact required dimensions. it only took 8 tries!!

  • Aspect ratios exporting to quicktime

Apologies if this is a hoary old newbie question and please do point me in the right direction if there are other threads on the same topic.
I’m editing a short originally shot on digibeta 16:9, then dumped down onto DV for digitising in. I’m having trouble keeping the aspect at 16:9 when I export to Quicktime.
The imported clips need ‘anamorphic’ checked to push them from 4:3 into 16:9 for editing, and almost every time I export the timeline to Quicktime, it comes out as 4:3. I’ve tried loads of different combinations of export settings but can never hit on the right one twice, let alone quickly. It’s not helped by FCP defaulting back to, well, its defaults each time.
So my question is: What boxes need to be ticked, settings set, etc. to export to a 16:9 .mov? I’m after streaming quality to do rough cuts people can view online.
    many thanks
    SD

You should use Compressor for this if you're not already using it.
Export the squeezed movie from FCP, and bring it into The Compressor Batch window. Your clip will appear in the window with a "Setting" column to the right of the clip name. Click the pop-up to apply a setting.
You will see all of your codecs with the QuickTime Web Download settings most likely toward the bottom.
Select the settings that you need.
This will show information for your setting in the Inspector window. Towards the top of this window, you will see a series of buttons under the name & description fields. If you hold your mouse over them, the name of that preference will pop up. Click on the Second to the last on the right which is "Geometry".
Here you can chose your frame size, pixel aspect, etc. At the bottom, you will see "Constrain to display aspect". If you click that menu, and select "16:9", and then click "Submit" in the batch window, your movie will be exported in the proper 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • Best Aspect Ratio for Most DVD Players?

    Hello savvy users,
I'm getting ready to deliver the Master DVD to the duplication house.
What, in your experienced opinion, is the best aspect ratio to use for folks to play on their players.
It's a HIGH SCHOOL recruitment video that will be handed out to parents, etc.
(I may have missed it -- I've searched the forum but couldn't find an answer...)
    Thanks

Oh Please...stop the sobbing!! Did I ask questions on this forum without knowing the basics?...absolutely not!! Im here to help but that would be impossible to do without you knowing a little about video before you can do that. There's way too much to cover over a internet forum. Beside I gave you some good info already. Here's some more. You'll recieve more help if you dont take things so personally.

  • Aspect ratio when putting dvds onto AppleTV

I've been using a program that puts my dvd movies into mp4 format but when i play them on a widescreen tv, theres the black bars but not at the top and bottom. they are on the sides. Its really bad when i play a widescreen movie because theres the bars at the top and sides so the movie just looks like a little box. Any ideas on what kind of settings I should use? Haiulllp!!!

If you play them back via iTunes do they look the same?
The actual aspect ratio will also be important as if they are 4:3 movies you can expect the bars at the sides. If they're widescreen movies then remember many films will also have bars top and bottom as they are too wide for 16:9 TVs.
Also be aware that the way your TV processes widescreen signals can vary - different ones have different options which will attempt to fill the screen/zoom or show as 4:3 even. That's why I'm asking how it play in iTunes as if it looks OK there you may need to address settings on the TV too.
I converted a recorded film recently and it had the same - bars at sides/top and bottom which was odd for a letterbox picture - all became clear after about 10 minutes when the letterboxing disappeared and the rest of the film was broadcast 'pan and scan' 4:3, so even the letterboxed start was actually encoded as '4:3 at broadcast!

  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio exporting incorrectly

I shoot 16:9 footage with my dv cam @ 720x480. When I try to export using default video settings, and when manually setting them to 720x480 (PAR 1.2) I get the same problem: 16:9 video is squeezed to more like 13:9.
To demonstrate, I have exported a frame using these settings:
    http://atomspace.com/putfile/AR_settings.jpg
... and this was the result:
    http://atomspace.com/putfile/Aspect_ratio_wrong.jpg
As you can see, the frame is squeezed ---- for example, compare the CRT monitor in the exported frame to the one in the sequence window in Premiere.
Can anyone offer some advice to get my video (and frame exports) to be exported correctly - without this horizontal squeezing?

  • Idvd not keeping aspect ratio when burning dvd

Ok, what I am doing is creating the project in Final Cut, exporting using quicktime conversion (everything up to this point is 16:9) then I go to iDVD and what I need is a dvd that has no menus at the front or the end of the project, and it plays upon start. So I go to iDVD >file>onestep DVD from movie>select movie then insert dvd and it burns, But it burns it as 4:3, not the 16:9 I saved it as. I see nowhere to change this setting. Am I limited to only doing 4:3 projects with this type of dvd?

I'm very surprised that if you followed the references I gave you, you are still having problems.
Another solution is to use something called Anamorphizer that sets the file's widescreen flag so that it is recognized as anamorphically squeezed widescreen.
    Get Anamorphizer at http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).
What I do is air projects on our local school board channel and just realized that idvd changes my 16:9 to 4:3 when doing the idvd> file>one step dvd from movie option.
BTW, how does the DVD play in your computer? There may be an issue with the school board channel playback.

  • Aspect Ratio problem with DVD output

I have a FCP sequence that I have output as a self contained QT movie. The film was shot 16:9 HD, 1080i/60
I have processed this with Compressor, using the SD DVD setting for 90 mins (the film is 8 mins) because the client wants an SD DVD, not an HD DVD, even though the film was shot in HD.
I then take the Compressor output and import that into DVD Studio Pro. I set the display mode for the track as 16:9 and in simulator select display mode.
The problem is when I output the DVD, I have two non 16:9 televisions to test it on.
On one, which can switch between wide / original / 4:3 the only setting that looks normal (i.e. not squeezed or stretched or cropped) is the 4:3 setting. Yet this is a 16:9 film.
On the other 4:3 television, with no ability to switch between wide / original / 4:3, the image fills the screen but is stretched vertically (I would have expected letterboxing and wide screen image, as when I play a commercial DVD film on this television).
How can I output a SD DVD in 16:9 from this project?
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you this was very helpful. I had NOT in fact set the preferences ofr 16:9 encoding. I have now burned another DVD having made this change.
The result is better in that there are now two settings, original and 4:3 that work on one of the televisions I am testing on. Previously, the only one that worked correctly was 4:3.
I am still puzzled why I don't see the output as widescreen with black bars only at top and bottom. (I see it with black border all around. Though the image is not distorted.
Can this have anything to do with the fact that I am going from an HD format in Final Cut sequence to an SD DVD?
    Thanks again!

  • Can someone help me with aspect ratio conversion in DVD Studio Pro?

I'm a graphic designer at a small film distributor. Our production guy tells me I need to give him menu graphics at 854 x 480, and the Final Cut Pro will convert that to 720 x 480. That doesn't make sense to me; why don't I just give it to him at 720? I did two test files. BOTH look distorted. I'm not sure where to go from here; I want to solve the distortion problem, but I don't know what to tell our production guy he needs to do. Can someone explain to me, to forward to him, how to NOT convert/compress/whatever a graphics file? I want to be able to give it to him 1:1, with no distortion in the process at all. Or is that not possible? Thanks in advance.

If you've got photoshop, simply create a new doc using either the NTSC DV preset (either regular or widescreen).  This will create a doc that will display correctly from within photoshop, but save and import correctly in dvdsp.
This is all due to the fact that dvd's (and most video formats) use rectangular pixels while photoshop uses square pixels.

  • Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu.  The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV!  It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable).  I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal.  Please help!

  • Using "One Step DVD from Movie" on my IMac 10.8.6 using Verbatim DVD-R ("Life Series") 4.7 GB 16X 120, I get a wide angle version of my two minute story rather than the 3X4 standard aspect ratio that I normally get and want.  Help!

While using "One Step DVD from Movie"  using DVD-R Verbatim ("Life Series" 4.7  16 X  120 min) on my IMac 10.6.8 I get a wide angle aspect ratio on the DVD not the standard 3X4 aspect ratio.  The Quicktime Movie is is standard 3X4 aspect ratio and the video video footage is standard 3X4 aspect ratio?  Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
    3 -  reboot.
4 - launch IDVD and try again.
Personally I would not the the one step method but create the iDVD project  from scratch so you can make sure the widescreen option is not selected in the preferences and you can follow this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Aspect ratios for FCP 5 exportions

    To all Mac Fans,
I have filmed a film in HD and editing using FCP 5. I have done this when i export:
file > export > QuickTime Movie > (named the movie) > save
(my settings are "current settings" and the movie is self contained.
    Its an 8 minute film.
I dont know if this helps, but i went
final cut pro > easy set up
    and my settings are:
    sequence preset - HDV 1080i
    Capture Preset - HDV
    Edit to tape/PTV output Video HDV (1080 x 1440)
However, after exporting and then burning through iDVD when i play it on different sized televisions, i find that some of the image gets cut off. Right now i am presuming that that is due to HD being something like 1080 x 1440 pixels, which is bigger than the average tv which runs on an aspect ratio of 3:4.
a mate of mine suggested that i trim off the edges to each of my sequences, by cropping. However, that is long and time consuming, and due to visual semiotics i feature in my film, i cannot chop off edges of my sequences.
Could someone plesae advise me how to obtain the best quality 4:3 aspect ratio export formatting??
If it is possible, i prefer not to use compressor, as i have read the simple instruction booklets, exported it, but then cannot burn to iDVD.
    many thanks to all

  • Aspect ratio when exporting to DVD

Newbie - forgive me but have been struggling with this one for days.
Have a project - 5 min film - in FCP X and really struggling to export it to DVD using the share command - it will copy fine but the original is in 1920 x 1080 and the DVD share option automatically selects to burn at 720 x 576.  Inevitably the output is skewed and the altered ratio means that there is lost image around the edges.
I need to have this project outputted onto DVD.
I have tried exporting via the Blue Ray option and using the DVD disc option instead of the 'Hard Drive (Blu Ray)' option under Settings/Output Device but although this process seemed successful the DVD would not play on either a DVD player or Blu Ray Player.
Is there any way of exporting direct to DVD in 1920 x 1080 or similar locked aspect ratio (eg 1280 x 720 etc) or of altering the default output setting for DVD sharing?
I don't have compressor, I don't have DVD or Blu Ray burner software and surely FCP X can do this?
I have altered the format of the original file into various aspect ratios but irrespective, the output ratio is always the same incorrect ratio of 720 x 576.
In anticipation of your help, thank you and please keep your answers in plain language - am new to FCP X and macs!
    Thank you
    LizW

Taht's really puzzzling. Could you export a short section of your video as a Master File and open in QuickTime – and post a screen shot of the Movie Inspector Report?
Here are some screen shots of a 1080 PAL video. I have chosen a slide show with 3:2 images to emphasize the circle shape and the rectangle that extends to nearly the width of the frame.
I then export as Share>DVD. Note the 720X576 frame size bottom left.
Here, I have opened the VOB file after export in VLC (DVD PLayer will not support a screen shot).
As you can see the circle shape is not distorted (so the anamorphic data was read correctly). Nor is anything cropped in display – since the entire rectangle is shown and the width of the black bars is unchanged.

  • Aspect ratio problems when exporting from FCP and creating DVDs

    Hi there
Can anyone help? I'm using FCP to edit material shot using a Sony z1 in SD 16:9 mode. My media displayed correctly in FCP with the 'anamorphic' option ticked in the browser.
I then exported my short films as QuickTime movies and created a DVD in iDVD using those video assets.
When I then viewed the films on a widescreen tv, the films did not display at the correct aspect ratio. They were horizontally elongated, as though they had been stretched twice over, so that objects, people and text appeared fatter than they should.
Can anyone let me know whether there are any settings I could change in either FCP or iDVD to stop this happening?
    Many thanks!
