16:9/Letterbox problem

Hi,
I have created a DVD with DVDSP which looked correct when using the "Simulate" option, but does not look right when viewed from a DVD player. The problem is that everything appears letterboxed, rather than fullscreen as I want it to. For example, the clip I am using has been exported from FCP as a DV Pal anamorphic, with the image filling the screen (no letterboxing). However, when I play the DVD on a widescreen TV the whole disc is letterboxed - meaning that the visuals appear vertically squashed. I have been experimenting with DVDSP for a week now, but can't seem to get over this problem.
Hope someone can help
Jack

I will try a commercial DVD later today but I think you are right about the dvd player/tv not being set up right. The disc was tried on two other dvd players and widescreen tv's at home and worked fine (although the picture quality wasn't too sharp). One question, I noticed one of the televisions doesn't have an actual 16:9 setting, instead it has a "wide" mode - I get the feeling this will not be true 16:9, is that right?
Thanks
Jack

  • Best Quality Setting and Letterboxing problem

Just finished 10 minute production shot with a Canon xl2 in 24p advanced pulldown with 16:9. After exporting with compressor to DVD Studio pro and burning - have some leterboxing and quality is not what I expected. Also - client reports "pause" when playing on new dell. Need the highest quality - but production needs to play on most popular newer model computers. Would appreciate any advice anyone can provide:
    1. What is best export setting to use from FCP for DVD production of a 24pa 16:9 project? Should 16:9 be checked under the advanced sequence setting - or does that cause a problem in dvd studio pro?
    2. What is best compressor setting? DVDbest quality 90 minute 16:9?
    3. In DVD Studio - under the track settings - would you check letterbox, 4;3; or pan-scan & letterbox - why is there not just a 16:9 setting? Why would DVD studio pro indicate the asset is 29 vs 24 FPS?
Really need some help on this - we have a fantastic production and wand it to be displayed in the proper format at the highest quality. Thanks so much.

although your 'normal' rendering shows the correct scenery, it looks in 'best' as if the fall-off settings of your light(s) is too high/low (?? )
I would increase these settings of the lights…

  • Letterboxing problems

I'm editing video from 2 different cameras. A cannon and a sony fx-7. When I go from one camer clip to the other, my sony is showing up as letterbox and the cannon is showing up full screen. Both videos have 720 x 480 resolution. Is there a fix to this so it doesn't jump back and forth during final production? Thanks for the help.

So it sounds like the Canon recorded in 4:3 fullscreen mode while the Sony hdv was recording 16:9. If that's the case then you have 2 obvious options; either add a matte to the Canon footy to match the Sony's letterboxing, or zoom in / scale the Sony footy to fill the screen. Either way you're going to lose picture info, but since it's DV I'd recommend matte-ing the Canon footy.

  • Vertical letterbox problem..please help!!  pictures posted..

I am working on making a surf video... most of the footage i shot and edited was anamorphic 16:9....recently i decided to only shoot 4:3...so now, i have a few random 4:3 clips w/ vertical black bars on anamorphic timeline?!?!? does anyone know how to get rid of the vert. letterboxing?! or is there a way to convert those few 4:3 clips to widescreen in post-production to save time?

  • Double Letterboxing problem in iMovie 06

I have made two movies I would like to combine. When I play either movie it has a black bar top & bottom, which is fine. The trouble is if I open both movies and drag the clips from one to the other to combine the two then the black bars on the one I am adding get bigger and the movie compresses in size; viewable size not MB size.
    Any suggestions or ideas please?
    Thanks in advance

Gave up and reimported the movies!

  • Can i delete the letterboxing plug-in from the "show package contents"?

When I move clips from one project to another, either by click and drag or edit-copy-paste, of footage shot with the same camera the same day, the clip imports as a letterboxed clip. I have unchecked the automatic letterboxing in the preferences-import, deleted plists, ran disk utility, reinstalled snow leopard, moved the clip from my lacie to the desktop and then to the other project.
I would like to solve this by deleting (move to trash) the "letterbox.bundle" from the "plug-ins" of control-clicking imovie hd in applications. That seems like it would work, but I have never messed with those. Could it cause other unintended consequences? Also,I want to reinstall my iLife 6.0.3 disc but it gives me odd prompts also. I can't isolate the imovie part. Thanks!

Thanks for telling me about the "video format options". I wondered why it would try to start a new project in HD sometimes, giving a two-pane view in the clips section instead of three. I learned to play the camera before clicking "start a new project" to clue in imovie. I will always use this option now when starting a new project. I also had never payed attention to the format display at the top of my project screen.
I opened all the affected projects I've been trying to move clips around in, and they all say "DV-NTSC", so that seems not to be the cause of my letterboxing problem.
Now, I will try reinstalling imovie 6.0.3 with Pacifist. I assume I don't need to reinstall the idvd on that disc.
Thanks very much for the (new to me) info!

  • Exporting Movie: Aspect Ratio

I've been editing a music video that was shot on the HVX camera. It was shot at 720p. I started my project as a 720p project and imported all the footage (MXF files) into bins and edited my video. I go to export it and it exports to an AVI in an aspect ratio that is NOT 960x720! I checked the export settings and they are as follows:
    File Type: MS AVI
    Compressor: None
    Color Depth: Million+
    Frame Size: 960h 720v (16:9)
    Frame rate: 23.976
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
When I edit the video in premier it is the correct aspect ratio. I click on a clip in the time line and it says "Video: 23.976 fps, 960x720 (1.333)" so what am I doing wrong here?

The strangeness continues. I played the file in BS player and SOME of the fades worked. NONE of the fades in/out to black, but I may be able to work around that issue. I have it set up where it fades in and out to a blank space on the timeline. If I insert a black video slug the fades might work. I say this because when fading with other video (I have a couple crossfades in the video) they work just fine!
When I play the rendered video in CS3 the fades work. Why? I don't know.
Project settings as follows (General Tab):
    Editing Mode: P2 720P 60Hz DVCPROHD
    Timebase: 23.976 fps
    Frame Size: 960 h 720 v
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
    Fields: None
    Display format: 24fps
    Video Tab:
    File Format: DVCpro 100 720p 60Hz
    Compressor: Same as above
    Color Depth: Million+
I'm still getting the letterboxing problem too, when I use square pixels.
EDIT: My workaround for my fading issue did not work. I have no clue why. So for some reason TWO fades work in this project, but none of the others. The two that work are a fade in and out on a set of titles on vid track 2 and a cross-fade in between two tracking shots in the middle of the project. The fades that do not work are at the beginning and end I have a series of quick fades in and out, in typical music video fashion, that do not work at all. Except when played back in CS3, but I need them to work in other media players too!
Thanks for all the help so far :)
    EDIT #2:
Now even when I have the project rendering in HD Anamorphic pixels I get the same problem with the fading! It used to work when I'd render in 4:3. But now it doesn't. ARGH.

  • Easiest way to convert 4:3 sequence to 16:9

Alright so let me explain the situation.
I have a 4:3 video project using 16:9 footage. Originally we wanted it letterboxed because it was a lot easier (at this point I wasn't sure how to get 16:9 footage to display properly with iDVD and it was made before the widescreen TVs were so popular).
I want to go back now and change the sequence to be 16:9 (true widescreen rather than letterboxed). problem is if I simply tick the little checkbox under sequence settings the video clips are all stretched to still display as "letterboxed" because they have been set to the aspect ratio of "-33.33" under the motion>distort tab.
obviously I dont want to go through every single clip and fix the ratio so that it displays properly. is there and easier/faster way to do this? or am i going to have to painstakingly fix each and every clip on my timeline?

I've found that when you do a copy and paste it ends up looking the same.
What you can do is change the sequence settings to anamorphic (as you have done) and then select all the clips in the sequence. Go to:
    Edit -> Remove Atrributes
then make sure everything is unchecked except for "Distort"
Note that any clips that you have applied a distort effect to willl need to be redone.
    Hope that helps

  • Embedded Movie Aspect Ratio

I'm rendering DV video (720x480x.909 pixel AR) to Quick Time 7 and embedding in ID CS3 targeting PDF files. When rendered to .909 AR QT, the normal QT display (via PDF) displays correctly with correct AR. Depending upon my render settings, I've sometimes seen an active "maximize" command when right clicking the title bar of the QT player. When it can be selected, the maximized display AR is grossly distorted. Is the maximize function supposed to be available and scale properly?

The strangeness continues. I played the file in BS player and SOME of the fades worked. NONE of the fades in/out to black, but I may be able to work around that issue. • Maddening problem with letterboxing inconsistancy

I'm working on a project that requires letterboxing in a 4:3 frame. I shot my footage in 16:9, captured it and edited in a 4:3 sequence. Everything worked great. Second project, same thing except that some of the shots appeared on the canvas stretched out vertically and with no letterbox.
In the viewer they look fine as 16:9 compositions. But when they are dragged to the sequence. They are stretched out.
At first I thought it might be a capturing problem since all the shots from one day's shooting and capturing had this problem. But then I captured a whole, single interview as one clip and then broke it into sub-clips and some of the sub-clips have this problem and some don't.
    I'm scratching my head.
2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.9) iMac

First, don't do what you're doing. Don't edit 16:9 material in a 4:3 sequence. Edit in the format it was shot and captured in. Capture in 16:9. Edit in a correctly sized 16:9 sequence. When you're done put your 16:9 sequence inside a 4:3 sequence to letterbox it.
Once you mess up a clip by distorting in the wrong format sequence or capturing it incorrectly it gets difficult to recover and bad things can happen. When you put your 16:9 material into a 4:3 sequence it's being distorted. Move it out of the sequence and it will no longer display correctly.

  • Problems using the letterbox filter

    Hello,
I am having a problem compressing from Final Cut via Compressor into an Mpeg-1 file. I shot (and edited) in 16:9 but the Mpeg-1 files turn out squeezed up in 4:3.
I was advised that the letterbox filter would be a way round it but when I go into the Inspector window and eventually find a way to stop all the settings being greyed out, when I change them and save them, including selecting letterbox filter, then submit the job, nothing is any different. The finished mpeg is still squeezed into 4:3 with no letterbox.
Any advice that would help me solve this problem? Unfortunately I don’t know Compressor very well (as is probably obvious) and don’t find it at all easy to work out.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sasha

If you're looking at a setting in the Inspector, you're looking at one of two things; the original setting from the "Settings" window-- this one is not modifiable-- or the modifiable copy of that setting that you're using on your asset (the video you're compressing, in the batch window). Click on the setting over your video in the batch window to work with the modifiable version.
A good "basics of Compressor" tutorial might benefit you. Apple has a few on their website.

  • Letterboxing + Widescreen Problems!

Just purchased a Sony HC96 DV Camera - but seem to be getting some problems importing the widescreen video content?
Now matter how I create a new project in iMovie - it automatically seems to change it to 'DV-PAL'.
If I import the video, then iMovie preceeds to convert it to a letter box format.
If I turn off, automatic letterboxing, then all the video content is stretched!
Is the above by design, or is there a way for me to import my Widescreen Content in Widescreen?
    Thanks

My camera is Pal, but I live in NTSC land. My wide screen also goes to letterboxingon the computer. I used 29fps instead of the 25 fps. I wonder how this will work on a DVD.

  • Problem with letterbox

I've got a project I'm working on which has HDV 1080/24P clips and Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) 1440x1080 24P clips in it. The problem is it's letterboxed which I don't really want. How do I fix this?

If the letterbox is in the actual video clip (not a matte effect that you can turn off) you may have to scale up/zoom into the images until it becomes hidden (i.e. use Scale in the viewer motion tab).
But this will cause loss of resolution for sure. You could alternatively create a DV project and drag in your HDV/ProRes stuff with native bigger frame and fit that within the SD project. Everything depends on what you need to achieve.
Pixelation could be caused by the need to render, do you see any green, red, orange line on top of the timeline? If so select clips and hit respectively (depending on the color) Control+R or Command+R or Option+R.

  • Letterboxing and Aspect Ratio problem

I'm authoring a feature film DVD. All menus and movies are 16:9
When I play the Simulator in "16:9" everything is fine.
When I play the Simulator in "4:3 Letterbox" my menus are letterboxed as desired, however every movie is for some reason squished into 4:3.
    Any ideas?
The Video Asset box in the Inspector tells me all my movies are 720x480 16:9.
All tracks show in the Track Inspector as display mode 16:9 Letterbox.
All Menus show in the Menu Inspector as Aspect Ratio 16:9
Also of note, one of my tracks is used both as a movie and as a motion menu. Although it's the same track, with the simulator in 4:3 it's correctly letterboxed as a menu, yet squished as a movie!
I exported from a 16:9 Anamorphic project in FCP (as a QTmovie set to Anamorphic NTSC DV) and imported straight into DVD Studio Pro. (I've noticed on these forums most people go through Compressor. I didn't. Would that be the cause of my headache?)
The movies display in my QuickTime Player as 16:9 clips with a size of 853x480

The Simulator is very far from accurate. Burn a disc, then pop it into a DVD player.

  • HT4589 How do I move video clip clip up or down after setting letterbox, i used to be able to do this until i upgraded to 10.0.6

I used to be able to manually move my video clip up and down in the event the browser using one of the settings. It was a vertical settings that i would use to pull a video clip down after i applied a letterbox to the clip, so I could see the top of the the video clip that got blocked out by the letterbox. Still looking no luck....I used to be able to do this just upgraded to FCPX 10.0.6 now i dont have the setting..

think i might have solved my own problem the feature is not there i have to upgrade again to 10.0.7...this is getting annoying...
