16:9 movie squished in iDVD

I have a movie all finished in FCP..16:9
when I pull it into iDVD (from iLife) the movie is squished. if I first "fix" the pixel dimensions in QT pro, the movie comes in at the right aspect ratio, but my titles, created in FCP, are nasty-looking and pixellated.
crummy choice!
any ideas on how to get iDVD to "see" what FCP has made?
thanks!
r

I have been working with anamorphic 16:9 in FCP, and when exporting (many various attempts) iDVD doesn't does not pick up on the fact that it is a 16:9 movie. My work around is quick and simple: open the clip(s) in Quicktime(Pro) and go to:
Window>Show Properties>Visual Settings...and then unclick the "peserve aspect ratio" so you can change it to 853 x 480. Save the clip in Quicktime after you make that change, and them from that point iDVD will know. I got weary of endless attempts to discover an export from FCP that iDVD would get. I may be missing something but I have tried and finally came up with this QT step.

  • Widescreen QT movie squished in iDVD 08 16 X 9 project

I've seen this question in a few forums but have yet to find a satisfactory solution. Widescreen movies look squished on iDVD 08 DVDs. Here's what I've been doing:
I edit and export a widescreen QT movie in FCP 6.0.4 (from a DV source).
I open the movie using QT and change the video track properties as detailed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2179
When viewing the movie in QT, it is in the proper 16 X 9 aspect ratio.
I create a new iDVD project and make sure it's widescreen. The theme is widescreen, the menu looks widescreen.
I add the 16 X 9 QT movie into the IDVD project and it looks squished from side to side, with grey bars appearing on the right and left sides of the movie's frame. This is seen on my computer screen as well as my widescreen TV (and my DVD player's settings are correct for the display). When I play the disc using my Mac's DVD player program, the screen shrinks from the widescreen menu to the squished banana-headed-people movie.
What gives? What's the correct settings and workflow to display my widescreen movies correctly on iDVD-burned discs?
    Thanks for any help!

Pretty sure DVDSP will let you set the flags for 16:9 "manually"
    From the DVDSP manual
SD DVD Menus, Tracks, and Slideshows
    • Display Mode: Choose the default aspect ratio to use when creating menus, tracks,
and slideshows in SD projects. You can choose from 4:3, 16:9 Pan-Scan, 16:9
    Letterbox, and 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox.
16:9 Pan Scan & Letterbox: You can have up to 12 buttons.
Since I'm not a DVDSP pro, so you might want to ask in that forum!

  • How do i add a second movie to an idvd project when 'sharing' from imovie always opens a new idid window?

I am creating an idvd project with multiple imovie projects.  I know I need to share my imovie project with Idvd.  WEhen I do that, idvd automatically opens.  Now I want to add a second project.  The problem is that when I share imovie projects a second time, it automatically opens a second idvd project.  I want to add multiple imovie projects on one idvd project.

One should not share directly to iDVD from iMovie.  The Share ➙ Media Browser option should be used as that results in a better quality movie in iDVD.  Do the same for both movies and you can drag the movies from the Media ➙ Movies pane in iDVD into the DVD menu window at the left.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Setting the order of my mov.s in idvd?

editing in the latest final cuts express/ exporting fce sequence to mov.s/ dragging mov.s (currently 3) into idvd "revolution main" box/ adding chapters at 5 min. intervals/ cleaning the silly menus (noxious music, whirling things, 38 minute loop duration)/ burning.
if i have 3 mov.s in the idvd project, idvd chooses the order not me. that's unacceptable. how does it chooses the order and why?
i suppose there's a way to put it all in a single timeline in final cuts express, make chapter markers in fce to delineate the 3 parts of the project, the doing something with even more submenus in idvd then add the 5 minute chapter markers in there. or is there away to do that?????????????????????
none of this is " new apple laptop WORKS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX"!!!

My experience is that if I drag the movies into an iDVD menu screen one by one, the “tab” order will be the order that I create the movie buttons. By “tab” order, I mean the order in which the buttons will be selected when I use the down-arrow button to go from one button to the next. I assume that's the “sequence” you are referring to.
Last night I figured out how to change the tab order, albeit in a simple case. I had used an old project as a template for a new one. The old project had three movie buttons on the main menu, and a fourth “?” button that opened a submenu containing some “about” text with no buttons. The tab order was
    Movie1->Movie2->Movie3->?
I saved as a new project, deleted the existing 3 Movie buttons, and dragged in a single new MovieX. The menu looked fine, with the MovieX button centered in the menu, and the ? button in the lower right corner. But when I ran the DVD simulator, I saw that the tab order was
?->MovieX, so that when the DVD menu first appeared, the ? button was selected by default -- not what I wanted.
I figure I could have just deleted the ? item and recreated it from scratch. I suspect that would have corrected the tab order problem, since the new version would be the last button created. But I was too lazy to retype the About text.
I went into the Map window (horizontal layout), and I noticed that the order in which the movie and About submenu appeared, to the right of the main menu item, reflected the tab order - the About submenu was above the movie. Looking at the original project showed that its 3 movie items were above its About submenu.
I tried just dragging the movie to another position -- that didn't work. Here's what did work -- I selected the About submenu, right-clicked it and selected Cut from the popup. The About submenu disappeared, and the movie moved up into its position. Then I selected the main menu item, right-clicked it, and selected Paste from the popup. The About submenu then reappeared to the right of the main menu, but now BELOW the movie.
Sure enough, when I went back to the DVD simulation, the MovieX button was selected as the default at startup. The final physical DVD also worked as intended.

  • All my movies are in 4:3 scale. I need to finalize a dvd, and when the movie enters in iDVD, burns in 16:9 format. What must I do?

I need a help from you. All my movies are in 4:3 scale.
I use always the same Easy SepUp in Final Cut. My movies is compressed as DV NTSC in 4:3 format.
I need to finalize a dvd, and when the movie enters in iDVD, the preview appears already written in green "widescreen preview", and so the finallized dvd goes to 16:9 format.
I checked in Idvd, and the size is choosed to 4:3.
Interestingly, I've used iDVD several times, including by using templatesmade to 16:9, and changing the format to 4:3 it always worked well.
Maybe is an Idvd update that causes it?

Sorry,I know this is a month late, but I think I remember this happening to myself some time ago. As I can best recall, I believe I had used an MP3 music file in my project (exported from FCP 7) and that was the cause in some strange way. I remember deleting a file (again, I believe the mp3 file)  and then it worked fine as 4:3.Not positive, but  I hope this helps.

  • Where can I find movie files in iDVD?

    Hello,
So, I have lost a quicktime movie file that I made in iMovie and cannot locate the file anywhere on my HD. However, when I open the iDVD Project (iDVD 7.1.2) I made to make a DVD the movie plays fine inside of the project. Does this mean the movie file still exists on my Hard Drive somewhere? Is there any way to access the file? I have looked in the Movies Library in iDVD and it is not there! Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    John

It will be located inside the iDVD project package under
However, they will not have any of the audio associated with the video.  And the extension will have to be changed to .mov but again with no sound.
For future projects is you save the project as an archived project file
all of the media files, photo, video, etc., that are used in the project will be copied into the project file in the Assets folder:

  • Merging movies in iMovie & iDVD

I have created a number of small (approx 7 minute) movies as parts of a 2 hour travel movie. I have tried to merge some in iMovie. The video clips copy & paste in ok at the end of the previous movie, but the voice & music paste on top of the audio in the original movie & therefore can't be correctly positioned.
Is it possible to copy a number of such small movies to DVD & seamlessly join them?

    Hi m
To merge movie parts in iDVD - Not possibly to my knowledg
I would merge them in iMovie.
In iM 5 or 6 You can have more than one project open at once.
I would use the timeline and select all clips + audio-parts then Copy
go to the collecting project. Move the playhead to end of clips allready here
    then select Past.
Now open movie 3 - select all on timeline (3-track vision) and go to movie 1
(collecting movie) - move play head to end and Past
    Repeat till all got copied.
Now remember that there is a 60 or 120 min limit to iDVD and this includes
    material in menus.

  • Putting multiple chapter-marked movies under one IDVD menu

I am currently making various instructional videos for a company and I want to fit 4 separate imovies that are chapter-marked under 1 idvd menu so I can fit this in 1 Dual layer DVD . Any answer can help. Thanks
    Macbook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I assumed the OP had tried that and it failed..
I asssumed he was using the 'Export from iMovie' approach that only gives you a way to add one movie to an iDVD project.
Anyway, we should have him covered.

  • How to add more drop zones or movies in an idvd menu

I was building a dvd in idvd and ran out of drop zones to fill but I couldn't figure out how to add more drop zones.
I tried different templates but I could find none that had more than 12 drop zones.
Then I was adding movies to the main menu and idvd refused to allow more movies added when I reached 10 movies. It said that the template did not accept more movies.
I tried a few other templates and could not get it to accept more.
I don't want to add submenus because the movies being used do not lend themselves to being put into different submenus.
Is there some way to add more than the default drop zones in an idvd template and to add more movies in a menu without having to use submenus?
    Thanks for any advice.

I couldn't figure out how to add more drop zones
Sorry, the templates 'are what they are'.
I don't want to add submenus because the movies being used do not lend themselves to being put into different submenus.
You need to figure out how to work with what is available.
If you want more freedom, buy Apple's Final Cut Studio and learn to use DVD Studio Pro.

  • How do I deleted a movie from an iDVD project

I created an iDVD project using a movie, and have decided to go back into iMovie and make changes to the movie I am using for this project. Since I have put so much time into putting photos and music in submenus, I want to use the same project I created, just replace the old movie with the new. I cannot figure out how to delete the old movie from the project. I have shared the new one thru Media Browser, and it is ready to be added, but I first need to delete the prior version from the iDVD project.
Anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

READ THE ENTIRE MESSAGE BEFORE DELETING ANYTHING !!!
To delete a movie from iDVD: Open iDVD. Click once on the movie title to highlight it. Hit Delete. It should disappear in a poof of smoke.
If you have chapters in your movie, you need to delete the Scene Selection text button also.
But, when you reopen iDVD after changing your movie, before doing anything in iDVD, iDVD should give you a message that your 'assets have changed' and ask if you want iDVD to update. Click on yes/ok, but check your iDVD project before burning. The way it is supposed to work is that iDVD recognizes that you have made changes to your iMovie, uses the revised iMovie in its files instead of the first one, and uses the updated iMovie when you burn to disk or create a disk image. It is a nice feature so that you do not have to delete the iMovie already in iDVD and have to put in your updated newer version; iDVD is supposed to add the update itself, using the newer version of iMovie. It worked that way in iDVD 6.
However, if you have an iMovie with chapters, what happens with iDVD 8/9, as opposed to iDVD 6, is that iDVD does indeed recognize the changes and sends the 'do you want to update' message, but if you tell iDVD to go ahead and update, the chapters will no longer select correctly. They all will default to the same chapter no matter which one is selected.
I can't tell you whether or not iDVD will correctly play the updated movie if you don't have chapters. You will just have to try it.
If you do have chapters and/or incorporating the changes in iMovie does not work, the only 'fix' is to recreate the iDVD project. It takes time but is not difficult since you have done it once. Open a new iDVD project and put the updated iMovie into it. Do a "Save as Disk Image" to create a disk image file of your iDVD project. Play the disk image file with DVD Player. If it plays correctly, burn your disks from the disk image file using Disk Utility or Toast. You can delete the old iDVD project.
    Good luck with it!

  • Diff b'twn sharing a movie to DVD and importing movie project to iDVD?

I'm a relative newbie so bear with me if this is a dumb question. What's the difference (if any) between sharing a movie in iMovie 09 to DVD vs opening iDVD and importing a movie project?
Someone at my local Apple store told me the former would only enable you to view the movie on a Mac, while the latter was necessary if you wanted to view the movie through a conventional DVD player. True? Seems odd to me and the iMovie 09 tutorial does not mention this if I recall correctly.
Bottom line, is there a difference? Which is better and why? Thanks.
(I will have to burn some to PAL for relatives overseas)

Not sure for imovie 9, but in iMovie 6 and previous versions, sharing directly from iMovie to iDVD is not recommended because the video will be rendered by both iMovie and iDVD. Importing into iDVD avoided this double rendering. So the quality is better using the import method.

  • Making movie project in iDVD without a theme - still having trouble. help!

I am trying to make a movie in iDVD without a theme. I am following previous instructions but having a problem. I open up iDVD, create a new project. Pick a theme, then select the map view. When the screen opens I drag my movie into the first box which says "Drop content here to play....". I also loop the movie to play over. I am not able to move forward with burning a disc because there is a yellow triangle warning in the main theme box which says "menu contains no buttons". Nothing in HELP addresses this as far as I could find. Since I don't want to use menus and just want to burn my movie, how do I get around this problem. I finally decided to try and burn a disc anyway and iDVD quit during encoding process about half thru. Help....

Thanks Geoff - Your suggestion seems to be what I am looking for. However, halfway thru encoding/burning iDVD app quits on me. I don't know why that is happening??????

  • How to keep a High Quality Movie Resolution using IDVD ?

    Hi,
When I connect my camcorder to the TV directly, I can see very sharp resolution video (in normal TV screen format).
If I download the same recording to Apple in widescreen format, add music to it using iMovie and then burn it using iDVD, I get very poor resolution when I watch this movie on the same TV.
Would you know how can I do to keep my sharp resolution after burning my movie using IDVD?
    Kind Regards.

    Hi
This is due to iMovie and really iMovie'08 or 09
They are aimed for quick editing to web-publishing - not high quality DVD.
iMovie 1 to HD 6 and FinalCut Express or Pro are the tool of choise for DVD or
    even Blue-Ray (needs Roxio Toast™ and ev. a Blue-Ray burner/disks)
iMovie'08 and 09 discard every second line = less quality very close to VHS.
I never managed to get full quality from them to feed iDVD.
    • Pro Quality encoding in iDVD is very sufficient to my needs and
burning out with Roxio Toast™ as Blue-Ray to standard DVD (max 20-30 minutes)
gives an even better result BUT ONLY PLAYBACK on Blue-Ray player or PlayStation 3.

  • Getting Final Cut Express movie (burned using idvd) to play in Windows

I have made my Final Express movie into a dvd using idvd. However, it will not play on Windows media player, even though it plays on a regular dvd player. I am not certain why, but is there a way I can make it compatible? I have tried even burning it as a "disk image." I know I made it work before, but I can't recall exactly what I did previously to make it play in Windows media player. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, I have never found a way around this. It seems like DVDs created in iDVD are incompatible with some DVD players and most PCs that I have tried.

  • When I import .mov file to Idvd I lose audio in certain clips

The .mov file I can paly everything fine thru quicktime but on import to Idvd I lose audio on some of the clips. Why? all the boxes are checked on the I movie.

Where did your .mov file orginate from? If it came from a camcorder or a digital still camera that takes MPEG movies, then you need two pieces of software to separate the audio from the .mov file. First, download the Free MPEG Streamclip (do a Google search), and once you download that, there will be a link to download the $20 Apple MPEG Streamclip plug-in for Quicktime. MPEG Streamclip is brilliant in that it will convert your MPEG .mov file back to a DV file for proper input into iMovie for editing while the QT plug-in will separate the audio. In it's original form, the audio to your MPEG movie is imbedded into the video. QT will play it fine, but iMovie needs to have it separated.
