16:9 playback on apple monitor

hi everyone, this is my first post so i hope someone can help.
i use a conon xl2 to film and i edit in final cut express hd. i film in 16:9 and can edit no problem, i can also export a self contained quicktime movie and burn it to dvd, no problem. i can play the resulting disc through my widescreen tv, again no problem. is there anyway the file will look right on a computer screen, it automatically gets squished horizontally into 4:3 aspect, so are my dvds! i am using idvd 5 or 6 and have the same results, i need to be able to produce a dvd at least that will play on a computer and does not look squished.
i realise that i have probably just missed something totally obvious and must apologise for being stupid, but i do need help!!!
thanks folks.

I'm assuming you're working HDV. I don't think iDVD can make a disc that's switchable. You really should ask this question on the iDVD forum.
All the best,
Tom

  • Sequence playback on TV monitor problem

I've been having trouble getting HD sequences to playback on a connected TV (Standard DV plays back fine).
The tape deck and monitor are connected via component cables, and playback is fine while playing HD footage in the deck. In FCP, I change the easy set-up settings to HDV - 1080i60 and capture footage fine. When I start editing and want the footage to playback on the monitor, all my video playback options are grayed out under the Audio/Video Settings (except for Desktop Preview). The only way I've been successful in getting my HD sequences to playback on the TV is by changing the easy setup back to DV-NTSC while editing. However, doing it this way letterboxes the video on the monitor and degrades the footage. Any help would be appreciated.

That is the only way you are going to get HDV footage to play out via firewire...and show up on an SD monitor. By letting FCP downconvert the signal to a DV one...and not a good one at that. This is only meant to allow you to get an image onto an external monitor so that you can see your footage...basically a client monitor.
To get HDV out nicely to a monitor you need an HD capture card...

Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire because it's Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.
The best option you have is the Matrox MXO...$1000. This coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you color correction quality...but, it isn't compatible with COLOR yet. www.matrox.com
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well.

  • I'm trying to connect my 30" Cinema Display to my new Mac Pro along with a new Apple 23'" monitor.  The new Apple monitor is fine.  On the cinema monitor everything is blown up pretty large.  Any ideas on how to solve this?

    The 30" display needs a DUAL-LINK adapter.

  • Can I daisy chain 30" apple monitor to thunderbolt HD on macbook pro?

I have a 30" apple monitor plugged into this adapter:  http://foliovision.com/2009/12/apple-dual-dvi-mini-displayport-adapter-mb571z   that in turn is plugged into the thunderbolt port as well as one USB port on my 2011 macbook pro i7.
I want to buy a Lacie Big5 thunderbolt RAID system, but I only have one thunderbolt port.  will i be able to daisy chain the monitor to the thunderbolt RAID?

I don't want to assume that it will work because it a little bit different on the Retina. All of the 2012 line of MacBook’s utilize the same thunderbolt controller which does support 2 displays and 4 10Gbit/s data (even the MacBook air 11" can support 2 external monitors and it's own display). But i think that the controller is hardwired for each port meaning each port only has 2 10Gbit/s data and 1 display. I haven't been able to confirm this because I don't have 2 thunderbolt displays and i was wondering if anyone has tried this. The reason why I ask is because I'm doing research on all of the new MacBook’s and their Thunderbolt controller.

  • If I purchase a non-apple monitor and connect to my Macbook Pro, will I be able to put it to sleep?

I'm looking to buy a monitor or two for my laptop (Retina Macbook Pro 2013 model (not the latest one)). There are a few things that I would like to understand.
    - If I'm going to get the Apple Cinema Display, I know I will be using thunderbolt to connect my laptop to it. If I get a non-Apple monitor though, what will I be using? HDMI? also thunderbolt? is thunderbolt exclusive to Apple or can non-Apple monitors use thunderbolt as well.
    - As far as sizing and resolution, I know that I have to pay attention to the resolution of the monitor I'm getting to make sure I'm getting the quality I'm looking for as opposed to just looking at the size of it. Ideally, I would want my monitor to look like my Retina Macbook, whats the resolution I should be looking for? Is Retina too much for a monitor? if so, whats a good resolution for a monitor that my Macbook can support fully, what size will work without reducing the quality? does dual screens (even if the second screen was the laptop screen) reduce the quality of one of the monitors?
    - I don’t know if this an exclusive thing to when using an Apple monitor but, would I be able to put my laptop to sleep (actually close the lid) while it mirrors to the monitor? Is this only possible when using thunderbolt and therefore it can only happen with Apple Cinema Display? or can it happen with other cables?
    - Finally what are your recommendations for monitors that are good. I'm debating between one 27/30 inch monitor and two 21/23 inch display. LCD? LED?

This is more about your modem then anything. Sometimes you'll need to unplug and plug back in your modem. Consider it a glitch from the ISP or just the modem in general.
when I need to turn something off then on I try the modem first. This when I'm not doing any ware and tare to the device.

  • 30" Apple Monitor as HD TV/DVD Source as Well?

Hi everyone! I am considering buying a 30" Apple monitor with my PowerMac and am considering the following:
Ditching my old TV and having just the computer and 30" in my bedroom. I want to use the 30" monitor for both my PowerMac and for watching DVDs, playing Xbox, and watching cable (both regular and HD). Is this possible? Will I need to sacrifice anything to accomplish this?
    Thank you,
    Keith

The Refresh Rate of apple's LCDs are a bit slow for good gaming. They give you a blurring effect with lots of movement. I wouldn't recommend it. Most LCD's right now are not great for gaming with the Xbox. Maybe I'm picky, but I got a bad headache and did not enjoy it. Also, you need to think of how you are going to get your dvd player/xbox connected to the LCD. It has a dual DVI input. You will have to run it through your computer with a TV-PCI card or a video capture card, if you have a desktop computer w/PCI slots. Also you will need a HD-Cable box with a DVI output. Even then you will have to keep unscrewing the cable to switch between your computer and the cable. Or you could find a TV card/video capture card to put the cable through your computer, but to be honest it may not look great on the LCD because the LCD has such a high resolution, and most TV, even the HD tv thats out now isn't truly the resolution of the LCD. You may end up not using the whole screen when playing games of viewing TV.
And then there is apple's pixel policy, as well as other lighting color problems, that they are not too willing to replace a 30" LCD with questionable problems.
For this kind of money, and for what you want to do. I would get a nice 20"LCD and a 30" Tube-Flat Glass screen HDTV from somewhere that offers extended warranties, and you will probably still save some money as opposed to the 30"LCD.And You will probably enjoy the DVD/Games/TV more. Unless you are editing HD video, or doing massive graphic design work/animation, I would bother getting such a large screen for your computer. It won't easily double as a TV/DVD/Game Monitor and it can't be coveredfor more then a year unless you buy it with a computer and buy applecare. And then you still will have to kick and scream at the genious bar to get it repaired.
Just my opinion on the matter. I went through this whole proccess previously.
    Good Luck.

  • 20" Apple Monitor - Thunderbolt - MacBook Pro 15" (late 2011)

I have an Apple 20” monitor with an HDMI cable. I had that monitor connected to my Macbook Pro 15" (late 2011) with an HDMI to Mini adapter, and it was working fine as a second monitor.
I purchased a Thunderbolt monitor to daisy-chain the Thunderbolt monitor to the Apple 20” monitor and end up with a 3 monitor system, but I cannot get it to work.
This is the way I have them hooked up:
    20” Apple Monitor (HDMI Cable->Mini)  -> Thunderbolt -> MacBook Pro 15” (late 2011)
The 20”Apple Monitor does not show any image even though it is on and working properly. The Thunderbolt and MacBook Pro displays show the images. How do I connect these?

You could use a USB to DVI converter

but performance will be severly limited by USB and some functions won't work

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks.  I thought it too loose until I tried it.  works just fine!!

  • What's a good non-Apple monitor for my 13" MacBook Pro? Looking around 20-23 inches, preferably LED.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro and I'm in the market for a non-Apple monitor (Apple monitors are way out of my price range). I'm looking for 20-23 inch monitor, preferably LED. I need it to edit articles for publication and for Bar Exam studying in the next year. What brands have shown to have good compatibility with Mac? Do I need an adapter of some sort?

You'll need an adapter cable, and which one you need depends on what version MBP you have and the inputs on the monitor.
I just recently purchased a Dell U2410 to use as a second display with my iMac. Overall I'm pretty happy with but my use is a little different, I wanted something with very good color accuracy for photo work.  Based on what you said your needs are, you probably don't have to spend as much.
One thing I will say, is this particular monitor (and I believe all Dells) has an antiglare screen on it, which to be honest, took me a little getting used to.  Because of the matte surface, text and documents aren't quite as sharp and can even look a little hazy at times.  For your uses  you may be better off with a glossy screen as long as glare isn't going to be too much an issue for you.
BenQ makes some pretty nice and affordable monitors these days LED backlit or otherwise, and on that note, theres absolutely nothing at all wrong with non "LED" monitors, both technologies are still using an LCD panel for the display, they just deal with the backlighting differently.
As the other poster mentioned, NEC is always a good option as well.  Less common on the consumer side, but they make very good professional products.

  • Use 23" apple monitor as second monitor with 27" imac

I've just bought a 27" imac, and I want to connect the 23" apple monitor from my old system to it as a second monitor.
The 23" has a huge cable with firewire and usb connectors as well as a multipin connector. How can I link it up?

    Hello,
I have seen people use the expensive DVI-ADC converter with an MDP-> DVI cable.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-A1006-DVI-to-ADC-Converter-LCD-Display-Adapter -w-Power-Cord-/330799049978?
Cheaper ADC to DVI converter won't work.
Then you need an MDP to DVI adapter...

DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200.

  • What monitor looks most like an Apple monitor?

As a photographer I do most of my editing with Aperture on a 24" IMac. I recently purchased a Mac Mini along with a 22" LED HDTV Samsung monitor for my studio assistant to use. No matter how we adjust it, the colors and saturation are frightening. I can't trust the images at all. Right now I can't afford a $900 Apple monitor. Any suggestions anyone on another monitor choice for photography?

Samsung monitoers typically have all manner auto and enhance
settings.  Are you sure all of them have been disabled?  Dynamic
Contrast is one that really fouls the works as it adjusts contrast
based on the content to to obtain a contrast ratio.
For serious and accurate photographic work, there really is no
substitute for a high quality monitor, especially if you precise
color matching for various outputs is required.  If this is your
case, expect to spend $600 to $900 for such a monitor.
You should check photography sites to see which monitors
are most preferred by serious photographers and go from there.
Typical mainstream monitors found in big box stores simply
do not have sufficient dynamic range or fixed contrast ratio
for serious work, or do tricks like Samsung's Dynamic Contrast
    to get the "wow" factor.

  • KONA 3 will not playback on CRT Monitor

    Hi
I am having problems with playback of clips and sequences in a DVCPRO HD 720p50 project. When I view clips on a JVC CRT monitor, via SDI out, using the 625i 25 down conversion feature in the KONA control panel, I only get a still frame until I stop playback at which point the frame updates to the current frame. Strangely, if I drag the playhead through the clip I can see the clip playing fine.
I have made sure that 'External Video' setting in FCP is set to all 'All Frames'.
I've made sure that the Video Playback option is set to AJA Kona 720p 50 8 bit (1280X720).
The Kona 3 Control Panel has been set up the recognise the 720p50 frame setting and down convert to 625i25(PAL) for output to the SD CRT monitor.
The only time I get proper playback on the monitor is when I set FCP video playback to AJA Kona 720p25 8 Bit DVCProHD(1280x720). However I get an awful strobe effect on the monitor.
I'm wondering whether the KONA presets even support this type of project/clip as nowhere can I find a preset that recognises my frame size - 960x720. The footage was shot on the Panasonic HVX200.
Any help would be really appreciated as I've spent many hours trying to find the right settings
    Thanks

I suspect that the cameraman recorded the material at 720p50 PN. This uses less space on the P2 card or Firestore, but the footage has a timebase of 25 fps, which apparently the Kona card doesn't handle.
Ask the camera person to record at the normal 720p50 setting on the camera, and the normal P2 or Quicktime setting on the recording media.
As for the footage you already have, there is a method in Compressor, to get it to 50fps.
For the setting select Advance Format Conversion - DVCPRO HD 720p60, and in the inspector Encoder (2nd button from the left) for the video settings select "Custom" and type in "50"
(By the way, this is also a workaround if you don't have FCP 6 and the new Frame Rate Converter to make a nice slow motion. After you get it to 50fps use Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 25 fps and it makes it play at 50 percent speed)
(Disclaimer - I have only a little experience with the HVX200, but this is what has worked for me.)

  • Apple monitor keeps changing background pattern

I have been using an inexpensive 18in flat panel monitor as a second screen with my MacBook Pro. I borrowed a friends 20 Apple monitor and tried it instead of the 18in, but the background screen pattern keeps changing every 15 minutes or so. I have reset the preferences NOT to change a dozen times. Sometimes it will accept me setting it to Panther Aqua Blue, sometimes it will not, but it always soon changes the pattern to one of the Apple Plants pattern and then changes again every 15 minutes or so. The "change picture" option is not selected. This never happened with my old cheap monitor. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and log out/in. set your desktop background as you like it. it should behave normally now.
