17" i7 MacBook Pro incredibly slow

My i7 macbook Pro has become incredibly slow. Boot time is well over 3 minutes, bringing up a program (such as Microsoft Word or Pages) takes upto 2 additional minutes. When I look at the activity monitor, it does not appear that the machine is CPU bound--- CPU sits there at about 10-20% utilization at the most. I have a 7200 RPM drive, but it almost looks like it takes a long time to load. I have tried many programs: Disk optimization, DIsk Warrior, Clean my Mac, Mac Keeper.... so I have dedragmented my disk, cleaned all the caches, got rid of temp files, and done basically everything I can do.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I do not have many programs that I run regularly;; Mainly Safair, Chrome, Microsoft Office, iWork, and Mail.   The vintage of the machine is June 2010.   MacKeeper is saying my machine is at optimized. I have also removed virtualy all the programs that I had at startup including Growl, Flip4Mac.  I have also cleaned my desktop.
Ideas will be appreciated. I am now spending more time on my MacBook Air which is blazingly fast, but I am constrained by the small hard drive and the small screen.
Thanks,
Paul

Says it all right there. Uninstall this P.O.S. software if you can, they don't provide a method neither.
The Mac based Internet wants to crucify these jerks. It's as bad as MacDefender.
Download the free Easy Find here, it allows more deeper of a search than Spotlight, even invisible files. Seek and destroy MacKeeper.

When you first boot your machine and you have no programs open, look for a process that consuming a lot of CPU, it's likely your culprit, you can force quit it.
Look at your System Preferences > Accounts > log-in items for anything your not using and click the "-" to stop it being a log in item.
OnyX will deep system clean a Mac, do ALL the cleaning and maintenance tasks and reboot, it will do it without installing or running anything afterwards, unlike those other programs.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
What I suspect is your caches are thrown off by the defrag. Do the OnyX and remove MacKeeper, I think you'll be a happy camper after that.
When you reboot, there should be hardly anything running, your CPU usage should nearly zero.
If all this fails, your looking at backing up your data. Hold c and booting off the installer disk that comes with your computer and using Disk Utility to Erase, format HFS+ Journaled and reinstalling OS X.  Programs from fresh sources and files from backup.
Next time Carbon Copy Cloner your boot drive to a external drive, it's hold option bootable and you can recover/repair, run the computer off the clone or reverse clone if need be.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.

  • MacBook Pro Incredibly Slow, Shuts Down On Its Own, Dud?

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and if it's worth making the hike to my nearest Apple Genuis Bar.  I am a loyal Apple user, but man, I am having a myriad problems with this MacBook Pro 15" that I'm darn near ready to throw it out the window.  I'm wondering if it's possible I got a 'dud' computer.  I've had this computer for less than a year, and I've already had to re-install the operating system three times.  I don't run any funny programs on it, nor do I download bizarre things from the internet. I am also totally powering down the computer at the end of each day.  Randomly, the computer will simply shut down. Just shut to black, with no explanation whatsoever--and it's in a perfectly aired out place, so it's doubtful it's overheating. Or, for example, if I move the screen toward me.  It will shut the entire computer down.  I've had covers on the outside and on the keyboard since I've gotten it, so it's still pristine. It runs so very slow that it's maddening (what's that joke, 'You want to know how someone really is? Put them in a room with a slow internet connection?) and I get the 'spinning beach ball of death at least 40-50 times PER DAY. I mean, 40-50 times per DAY.  That's kind of insane.  Thankfully, I have Time Machine, but if I'm not backing up every single day, I'll risk losing information since the computer will shut down at will.
I work solely on this computer as an editor of a magazine, so it's incredibly frustrating when my work is suffering.  I'm about 50 minutes from the nearest Apple store, so I'm happy to go in there, but was wondering if anyone knew of any programs I might run to see if there's some sort of glitch.  I've already called AppleCare and they've had me reinstall my Operating System---the last time this happened was about a month ago, and again I'm plagued with the same problems... I mean, is it possible I just got a dud of a computer?
Any help I could run or programs you might suggest would be welcome.  I do not want to have to reinstall my operating system for the fourth time in less than a year.  Because that's plain ridiculous.
    Thanks!

for example, if I move the screen toward me.  It will shut the entire computer down.
You have a hardware problem you can replicate on demand. Make an appointment at the genius bar, NOW. Reproducible problems they can fix.

  • MacBook Pro incredibly slow slow slow

i have a week old macbook pro (2.8Ghz, 4Gb) and have not installed any apps yet, but just the bootup and running safari and mail is insanely slow.
its 10.5.7, and my almost dead, 8 yr old TiBook 667 is actually faster!!
    infuriating, frustrating, ***?!?!
    anyone else?

Slightly Different situation here. My MacBook Pro is about 3.5 years old (2.16 GHZ, 3GB(max)Ram) and it has been running incredibly slow since installing snow leopard. To be fair, I've had some issues with the user account all of my info is on before (I use a separate user account for Logic Pro and Photoshop). That other account on the same machine runs fine. I've found lots of forum posts telling people to repair disk permissions, try a new user etc. I've done all of that, the permissions are all fine, cache is freshly cleared and if I open Safari and Mail at the same time and try to type john in a search bar it shows as jjjjjjjjjjjjoooooooooohhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnn.
So my question: another user profile works, how do I get my stuff to it / what do I do if I know my main user profile isn't working right?

  • MacBook Pro Incredibly Slow?

My 2009 MacBook Pro has been acting very slow just this day. It used to work very fast. It's a 2009 13" refurbished.
Recently we upgraded our airport extremes and got an early 2012 extreme and an early 2012 time capsule. Before those upgrades, my computer was very fast. After the update, the computer was very slow.
Is this because my mac is too old and there is a 4 year difference between the products, or is there a problem with my airports? By the way, all other macs on our internet (2010-2012 age) are working fine, but mine stands out in being very slow. It takes me 30 minutes to install an itunes song instead of a few seconds.

why dont you reinstall the software back again

  • MacBook Pro incredibly slow wifi

So here is the issue that I am having:
I have Oceanic Time Warner Cable (Maui), with 100mpbs down, 5mpbs up. Here are the speeds I receive via speedtest on the devices I use wirelessly:
    iPhone 6+: 109.20/5.54
    iMac (24" early 2009): 80.38/5.42
    MacBook Pro (13" early 2011): 38.43/5.52
Both Macs are running Yosemite 10.10.3
I mean, HOW RIDICULOUS IS THIS?!?!? All 3 devices were tested in the same room as the router, one after the other. I am on 5ghz @ 40mhz, channel 149, no issues (obviously) with anything other than the MacBook. I have tried everything, and just don't understand how the macbook is performing so incredibly poor compared to my other apple devices.

watch out for what the new Photos app is doing... It seems to be uploading all photos causing wifi to crawl. In preferences, for the photos app, go to cloud tab, see if it is uploading or something. If so, choose "pause for a day". Then see if your wi-fi gets better. Seems to be a chronic problem and affecting a lot of users!

Purchase more RAM for your machine. The minimum is 2GB and many users here will recommend you at least increase to 4GB. Look at www.crucial.com

  • Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists

My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet.  Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
    Any advice is appreciated!
    My Specs:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.5 GHz
      Memory:          4 GB

    Melophage,
I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga  whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

DiskWarrior is a program that tries to repair low level directories that can get messed up. From their website ...
    What is DiskWarrior?
DiskWarrior is the safest, most technologically advanced, most powerful utility to eliminate directory damage available for any computer.
There are other utilities that do similar things.
Looking for login items is probably a better bet. You do this by opening System Preferences and then looking into Accounts. From there you should see a tab for Login Items. There will be some things you want to keep. iTunes helper and some other helper files are actually nice to have around, but you may have things that look like total sludge. Get rid of those. If you aren't sure, try to google the name of the program and you will likely get some more info about it before destroying it.

  • My MacBook Pro is slow, only safari open

It is 2 years old. 2.26GHz, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Not sure what to do? I only have safari open., My MacBook Pro is slow It is 2 years old. 2.26GHz, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Not sure what to do? I only have safari open, and it will freeze or the spinning rainbow wheel will come up for a long time. Or sometimes it shows that I am scrolling over something a good 5-10 seconds after I already have. Sometimes when I am typing, the letters appear later than when i have typed them. I am not sure what to do. Oh, and my security software is clean and up to date!
I have 85.22 GB of my 148.73 GB capacity available. I feel like it shouldn't be running this slowly!
    Please Help!!

Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.  When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer.
