17" Studio Display flickers on & off, then died

My Apple Studio Display is about four years old now.
Yesterday, it started flickering on and off for a while, then it completely died.
I let it set overnight, and proceeded to make "funeral arrangements" for the beast that I had so lovingly cared for...
I even took the Studio Display to my daughters home and connected it to hers since its the same computer.. and it started flickering again, on and off, etc...
Late this afternoon I went to pay my respects to my Studio Display whom I had been cussing out all morning, when it "came alive"....yes....."alive"....
And, as I write this, I feel like a much loved member of my family has risen from the dead and as if nothing had ever happened to it...nothing...nothing..
In my insignificant opinion, this "Studio Display" is about the best looking monitor I've ever seen from Apple. But, I will not be "fooled" again...
Now that this f%#@&'in display is working, I've done some important research as to what other monitor I'll be buying when this piece of crap really dies on me!...
I recall that I paid $1,000 for it originally. I've checked out some highly rated monitors, and when this present miscreant passes away, I most surely will not spend a cent to have it repaired, but go to the nearest Compusa or Staples, or whatever and pick up a non-Apple monitor, and hope for the best....
In the meantime, perhaps someone here could possibly explain to me why this piece of **** should die and then "revive" on me?...
But, I'm so "******" that I've actually prepared myself for its ultimate and rapid demise, that perhaps, just perhaps, I'll be glad when it happens!...

Hi Bob, I suspect it's the Backlight or the little Inverter assembly.
When it's dark shine a flashlight in it and see if you see a dim Desktop.

  • Display flickers lines and then dies black until device has hot temperature

    Hi Discussion,
I have a very strange problem since approx 2 weeks. My PBG4 is working fine and it is a very nice device, but until it reaches it's working temperature it is playing around with the display. There are lines (horizorental) flickering around the screen and then it is getting black and normal again. This process repeats every time the device is startet oder woken up from standby. If I try to adjust the brightness of the display with the buttons, this is working, so the lamp seems to be ok. I think the graphics board has some kind of damage. Did anyone else experience such problems? Is there a solution? I do not want to loose my device...
    Thanks Nico

  • Printer prints but display says Communication lost (device - control panel); Turn off then on.

    HP Color LaserJet CM3530fs
The printer is printing when asked to do so by a computer but the display says:
    Error
Communication lost (device <->  control panel); Turn off then on.
The orange attention light is illuminated and the display is always lit and shows the statement above.
It does not improve when switched off and on or power disconnected for long periods or pushing reset button at rear of unit.
Embedded web server works normally and thinks that all is ok.
Buttons on control panel do nothing.  eg. I cannot photocopy or scan.
The printer is about 2 years old but gets very light use in a family home.

  • 15" Apple Studio Display Shutting Off

My Apple Studio Display (LCD 15", purchased 2000) visual display is intermittently shutting off. Audio remains functional, and I can still type while the display is absent and when it comes back what I typed (ie, on a word doc) is there. The screen saver does not come on during the loss of visual display - the screen just goes black. When I move the mouse around or hit the keyboard repeatedly, the visual will come back. There are not problems with the display when it is visualized. Here's what i've tried so far:
    1. All connections are secure on the ADC cable.
    2. Tried restarting computer several times - no avail
    3. Checked the display settings in system prefs - energy saver is @ 15min.
I'm wondering if the problem is the monitor or something with the computer. I read somewhere in discussions that PRAM batteries can be a problem (mine has never been changed and I don't know how to reset).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really hope to continue to use my monitor!!

Do you hear a zapping sound when it happens? It could be high voltage arcing. Blowing out dust might help.

  • HT204380 My phone (iPhone 5S) getting green display after one second going to switch off then automatically ON during FaceTime

My iPhone (iPhone 5S) getting green display after one second going to switch off then automatically ON during FaceTime call. My OS version now 7.0.4. I think recent update actually to fix the above issue but still continues.

Similar issue Andrew.  After installing 8.0, the IOS deleted 225 songs from one of my playlists, and I'm still "recalling"  songs that are no longer in my Music Library.  Fortunately, although the playlist of 235 had only 6 songs left on it ( on my  Mac), the Playlist was not erased from my I -Phone.  I was able to recreate the Playlist on my Mac, using the intact playlist on my phone.  When I synched however, I was back to square one.  I went to the Apple store, and I had to reset the phone .  We also downloaded IOS 8.02.  They saved my playlist in the Cloud, deleted it from my Mac, then synched it.  Lo and behold, the playlist I recreated on my Mac, synched to my I Phone.  After the reset, I had like 11GB of free space.  (Its been 5 days since the "reset" and the number of GBs fluctuates from day to day !!)
When I got home from the Apple store I spent after  hours reinstalling all the apps, synchng the phone to the Bluetooth in my car ( you know the rest of the saga) , I purchased a song from I Tunes.  I "drag and dropped" it into a Playlist, and synched.  Didn't work.  Song shows in "Recently Added", but the drag and drop feature doesn't work.  Bottom line,  I'm not willing to "reset" my phone every time I add a song !  I've tried any number of fixes posted to this support community, but none have worked for me.
Furthermore,  it took me 3 hours to get the phone re-synched to the Bluetooth system  in my car.  However every time I connect to "Bluetooth Audio", the system needs to "find" and "reconnect to" my phone.    If you ( or anyone else ) finds  something that might work for both the music synch and /or the Bluetooth, I'd appreciate your input.
    Thanks, Lorenzo

  • PB G4 15" Display flickers then dies

Hello - I'm sure this has been covered before but the problem I'm having is the display flickers (after opening the PowerBook) then goes completely dim. I can still see the desktop functioning but just barely so I'm assuming that it's the display bulb.
I've been using an external display for a good time now and want my "lap" top back. Has anyone had experience replacing this bulb and/or just replacing the whole display? Which do you recommend?
I appreciate the feedback... thank you.

Yeah now that I look around a little more, PowerbookMedic agrees that it's likely the inverter. http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16612 Has anyone had experience with PowerbookMedic?
More importantly, can someone point me to an in-depth tutorial on replacing the Inverter yourself? Thanks

My I phone is restart after some time. Some times find out its off then if I press Home + Power button then again re-start. Some time after coming apple logo it take auto restart ...display become blue color. I have restored through I tunes and got I cloud backup. But stll have same problem.

Try once again to restore using iTunes, but this time without using a backup, to make sure that this is not software related.
If the phone still restarts on it's own, get it checked, this might then be hardware related after all.

  • My 11 year old Apple studio display died. what is best connection with new monitor

The lCD light finally quit after 12 years. So I bought a very cheap acer /led widescreenS200HQL 19 inch as a cheap quick replacement for my monitor on my  quicksilver G4 933. Question is it is connected to the second display port VGA... Is it worth buying a connector so it can be connected to the larger DVI port(where the apple studio display was connected?) will that make any difference??? Things seem fine but was curious as to the difference???

Many of the Studio displays were ADC. Are you sure that other port is really DVI and not ADC?
My 2004 MDD vid card has one DVI and one ADC connector. I have it connected to a Viewsonic display from about 2007 with both VGA and DVI ports. When I connect the DVI port directly to the DVI port on the G4, the native res looks good but it too small to read (old, tired eyes). If I change the desktop res to make things a little bigger, the image looks like carp--fuzzy and possibly some distortion.
If I use the DVI-to-VGA adapter on the computer and connect it to the monitor. the image is shape and proper at any support desktop res I select.
    You mileage may vary.

  • My MBP was working fine, but then the display just shut off... What should I try?

I was using my MacBook Pro 2011 13', when the display suddenly shut off. I thought at first that the computer shut down, but after a hard reset, the computer is on (keys lighting up, fan noises, heartbeat light on) but the display is completely black. I no longer have apple coverage. Does anyone have a recommendation of things I could try before taking it in?

    Try resetting the SMC.

  • MBP display flashes on and off, then the MBP freezes

Recently, my MBP started acting up. I can't figure it out. The display will go black, then will return to normal (over and over). After awhile, it just freezes. Any ideas?

It could be a power inverter problem, but you might try a disc repair to see if it's software related.
Start in single user mode by holding down Apple/S at startup
When you see scrolling text let go of the keys
When the text stops and you see a #root: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
    and hit return
Let it run through all the checks and repairs; if it fails first time run it again, if it finds and repairs anything run it again. (Some fixes can take a few passes) When it says "appears to be OK" enter
    reboot

  • Brand new mac mini and Studio Display 17" LCD- 2 adapters needed- problems?

From many forum posts here and elsewhere it seems I can in fact hook up my Studio Display 17" LCD monitor if I used the ADC-DVI adapter. But has anyone used the ADC-DVI adapter AND the DVI-mini DVI adapter that came in the box with the Mac mini?
Apple tech support told me on the phone tonight that doing so would "fry" the Studio Display.
Has anyone had any problems using this? Will running it through 2 adapters cause problems as opposed to the older minis where you could just do ADC-DVI and then into the computer?

Were you able to get your display working? I have an LG 27" at home connected to a Mid 2012 (June) MacBook Air 13" that has absolutely no issues. However, I just obtained the same Samsung monitor you have and appear to be having the same issue.
The only solution that I have found is to unplug the power from the back of the monitor or at the power supply each time my computer either wakes from sleep, screensaver, or a display that is powered off. This seems to be true via the following connections:
    1. HDMI to DVI thunderbolt adapter
    2. HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter
The display powers on with a slight flicker and then will immediately stop displaying the image on screen. What's especially strange here is the MacBook Air still believes the display is connected -- my login screen or active apps that are displayed on the external monitor do not move to the MacBook Air display as if it's no longer connected.
I hope someone has a solution to this issue! Thanks!

  • Strange Problem on my 17" Studio Display

Ok, just to get the specs out of the way - 2 17" Apple Studio Displays, both connected with ADC to DVI adapters to a Dual Core 2.3 PowerMac G5, running OSX 10.4.7, 2.5 GB RAM.
Saturday night we had a VERY bad storm - my wife and I were out when it hit, and my computer was on. I wasn't too worried as both displays and the tower are running off of a UPS/Surge Protector.
By the time we made it home, the battery backup had run out of juice and the system was shut down. We were out of power for about 12 hours. When the power came back up on Sunday - I booted up my mac.
As the initial Apple logo bootup screen popped up - I knew something was wrong. The background was a dark gray and the apple logo light gray - the opposite of what it is normally.
After the computer finished booting I'm left staring at my 2 displays in amazement. The display on the left looked as if the display had been inverted in the Universal Access Pane, and the right display was perfectly normal.
I can go into the Preference Pane, or use the shortcut CmdOption+Cntrl8, and all this does is flip which display looks normal and which one is inversed. I can't seem to find a way to get them both to display the same.
I've repaired permissions, I've rebooted, I've reset the PRAM, I've trashed preferences, I've scoured the Apple Discussion boards, I've spent hours on Google, I've run hardware tests on my G5, swapped the display outputs on the card to see if it was the video card - but the same display always shows inverted. I've also connected the suspect display to my Powerbook and it does the same thing, which leads me to be pretty certain its an issue with the display - not the CPU. I have no idea what to even try next.
Does ANYONE have any ideas for me to check out? I'm open to anything at this point. I've found a place that sells replacement parts, but have no clue what part I would even go about replacing.

    1. Shut down the computer. If you cannot do this because the mouse or keyboard are unresponsive, then hold the power button for ten seconds.
    2. Verify that the system is shut down by pressing CAPS LOCK. It should not light.
    3. Power-up the system and let it start.
    4. If the + key continues to repeat, it is probably a bad keyboard.

  • 23" cinema Display flickers and goes to black

    Hey all,
I am running two 23" cinema displays and one of them is flickering and going to black. Here is a video of it.
    http://larskoerkemeier.com/MVI_0972.MOV
The curved bands arent there thats just from the filming but what happens is the entire image shifts up very quickly and what you see flash on the bottom is actually the top. It repeats this a couple times and then turns off and then it repeats and after a couple times the display just stays off.
    System:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 6 GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    Thanks,
    -Lars

    Hi-
Try switching the power adapters to see if the problem moves to the other display.
Of course, reconnecting/double checking all connections is a good idea.
Other than that, any references in Console/Logs regarding graphics driver errors?

  • Display flickering in Safari-Retina MacBook Pro

Certain pictures and spots on webpages flicker, disappear, get locked up, etc., on webpages on Safari on Retina MacBook Pro.  The whole display has never been affected.  It seems to only happen in Safari on websites such as Facebook.  I'd take it to an Apple Genius but I can't get it to do it.  It seems completely random.  What could be causing this?

I am having the same issue. I have noticed that it only happens in Safari, and in my professional opinion as a software engineer, it is a software issue with Safari. I would say that the problem is due to the way that Safari handles scaling web sites to the high resolution display.
I have not tried this, but one could test this by switching the display resolution to "scaled for more space" in preferences. For the uninitiated, this will turn the "retina display" graphics scaling off, and give you the same 1:1 resolution you would get on a standard Mac display. That may turn off the scaling feature in Safari, and prevent the flickering issue. I would, however, not be surprised if it did not fix the issue.
Hopefully, to allay any/everyone's concerns, when an issue happens in a particular piece of software, but not in every piece of software then it is likely an issue with only that piece of software. I would not allow the Geniuses to replace your hardware in that case. You may end up spinning your wheels with no resolution to the issue.
For this I would just wait for the next release of Safari (as much of a pain in the behind as that is).
