1DC 1.3.5 firmware upgrade...worth the hassle?

After recntly sending my 1Dc in for the 1.3.4 upgrade, only to find out the line in audio feature was broken, I am reluctant to go thru the process again for the 1.3.5 upgrade.
Right now I simply use manual audio setting and a -25 dB attenuator cable for the mic input.
Is there any advantage to using the line input setting with the new 1.3.5 firmware upgrade?

Hi Everyone,
Is it OK to upgrade the 10.1.3.4 OH to 10.1.3.5 after we install the R12.1.1 file system but before running the R12.1.1 upgrade driver, so that we could complete the techstack related steps before the actual downtime to save time during the actual upgrade?
ThanksYou cannot upgrade 10.1.3.x ORACLE_HOME after you lay down R12 software and before the actual upgrade since your instance should be on R12 to apply the patches in (Upgrading to the Latest OracleAS 10g 10.1.3.x Patch Set in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 [ID 454811.1]). So, upgrade to 12.1.1/12.1.3 then upgrade the 10.1.3 ORACLE_HOME to the latest patchset (10.1.3.5).
Thanks,
Hussein

  • Is it Worth the Hassle

I have until 9/8/06 to return my 20" iMac Intel Core Duo I just purchased and have been using for a week. I would be charged a 10% restocking fee...but then I would be able to re-order the newly released 20" iMac OR the 24" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. My question is....is this worth the hassle. I love the machine. But it is considered older now. Is there that much of a difference that it would be worth me going through this hassle? I am a recent convert from the PC realm. What are your thoughts out there? Should I return and upgrade or stay with what I have? I use the machine for Studio 8 (Mostly Dreamwevaer and Flash..and hopefully Photoshop wehn it comes out...)
    Advice wanted.
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
    It depends.
The machine will not become unsupported anytime soon. But, the new machines do provide 64-BIT computing capabilities, and some nice performance improvements.
If it were me, I would probably consider taking the other one back. I don't know if I actually would. But, I might. I've known that the CoreDuo processors were only a temporary product offering since their introduction. Intel was pretty clear that they were only offering them as a short-term solution while they got ready for the Core2Duo. So, I deliberately avoided the CoreDuo knowing that the Core2Duo would soon replace it.
But, at this point, you need to ask yourself whether you really care about the differences enough to go through the motions.
You'll automatically lose at least $200 when you take it back. But, that's much less than you'll lose on a re-sale / private sale if you decide to sell it later.
The additional processing power is not "huge". But, if you plan to run programs that can take advantage of the 64-BIT processors, then you may see a significant difference.
It's really up to you. But, I know I'd seriously consider making the swap. But, I'm the type who wouldn't have purchased the previous model to begin with. So, I don't know how much my opinion is worth there.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.

  • Is paravirtualization worth the hassle?

I've been experimenting with both fully virtualized and paravirtualized guests (OEL 5.4 64-bits with Database 11g and user apps) under VM Server 2.2 to see how I want to make my final live production decisions, and have run into some strange issues with paravirtualization.
I've read that a paravirtualized guest can be faster than a fully-virtualized guest and wanted to test it for myself with my database and apps.
Creating a fully virtualized guest using the install-from-media method is straightforward and seems to give no problems and runs quite well.
Creating a paravirtualized guest the same method has been giving me problems, but I finally got one running.
First of all, it seems like only about one out of three paravirtualized guests created will actually start up and run. I've followed the exact same steps each time, but most times, after completing the Anaconda installer phases all the way to the point where you reboot the guest for the first time, it failed to start with an error something like: VmError: (1, 'Internal error', 'xc_dom_do_gunzip: inflate failed (rc=-3)\n'). I blew away the virtual machine and started over, and after the third attempt, it finally started up, but failed to mount the /boot filesystem, so I dropped into single user mode and ran fsck on /boot. After another restart, I finally was able to get a paravirtualized guest up and running.
I've gone thru this ordeal over a dozen times now creating a paravirtualized guest, and only successfully been able to make three of them start and run. All these numerous failures to start with the gunzip error and having to manually fsck the /boot filesystems has made my confidence level in paravirtualized guests pretty much zero. I doubt if I could put my faith in running one as a production VM now. Even when I get one running, it still gives one boot error message of unable to update the Intel cpu microcode, but I understand what's going on there and that step of the boot process could be deleted. The install process probably should've detected that it was running in a paravirtualized VM and not included that script to begin with.
Anyway, I've got my database and apps installed into a paravirtualized guest now, and have begun testing performance. I did run into the issue that the whole jvm subsystem of the database had to be ripped out and reinstalled under the paravirtualized guest, and also the dbconsole had to be removed and re-installed as well. I'm using tarballs of my database and application filesystems that were built within a fully virtualized guest, and even though they work fine when untarred into another freshly-created fully-virtualized guest without any repairs or modifications, these two issues arose when simply unloading the tarballs into a paravirtualized guest that was otherwise identical to the fully-virtualized guest.
I seem to be getting slightly better query times on the paravirtualized guest, and it might be worth the effort put into making a paravirtualized guest run, but I'm now worried that paravirtualized guests will be flakey and unstable.
Anybody else run into these kinds of issues with paravirtualization?
The fully-virtualized guests seem to be rock-solid and very straightforward to build, configure and run.
Is sticking with fully virtualized guests the safer choice?
My VM Server is a brand new HP Proliant DL370 with dual quad-core 2.9GHz Nehalem-core Xeons and 64GB ram, and does seem to have ample horsepower to get the speed I need with fully-virtualized guests running my database and apps.

I haven't heard of anyone running into the issues you mention with paravirt guests. We have extensively tested it in-house, and have also provided pre-built templates for paravirt database guests. Maybe you could give one of those a try, and see if they're more stable. There is a small chance that a guest OS configuration issue is causing the instability.

  • Has the firmware upgrade on the time capsule been fixed to allow iphones on the wireless network?  I reloaded the previous firmware edition and it fixed the problem.  thx

I checked beofre on the support communities when I was having trouble with the iphone 4 not being able to connect to the time capsule wireless after upgradeing the firmware.  When I reloaded the previous firmware version, the iphone wireless problem was gone.  Now the time capsule is asking to upgrade to that same newer version of firmware.
I don't want to do it until the iphone 4 wireless connection problems have been addressed.  thanks

......will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?
No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
    Same answer as above.

  • Will there be a firmware upgrade for the N80?

    Does anybody know?
I ask this question because I would like to make an informed decision whether to hold on to the N80 or get rid whilst I have the opportunity too.
I would prefer to keep the phone if I knew that some of the issue will be fixed.

karim, I have already reported my issues directly to Nokia using the approriate method, which is something you contiually reminds us to do, so there is not really any point discussing them in detail here.
coromoto, thanks for your comments, However I did not state the does not satisfy my needs, If in fact ticked all the boxes that's why I brought it. What I would like is a more stable phone with a more efficent use of memorey and if Nokia cannot slove some the battery issues via firmware than a bigger capacity battery would be answer to a lot of peoples prays.
Patience is a virtue, but at the rate Nokia produces new phone the N80 might be long forgotten before it's truly fixed.
I think it would be just good customer service if Nokia would actually say if they were working to resolve some issues by way of a firmware update, thus keep us of there backs.

  • Is 2.0 Update Worth the Hassle????

I have one of the original iPhones and have been reading the forums quite often since Friday and so far obviously I see a lot of people saying they are bricked. But is this happening because people were impatient and unplugged their phones before firmware update was complete due to the bogged down servers? This seems like a very possible scenario. Its either that or there really is something wrong with the update???
Also if people cram their phones completely full its not going to function properly just a computer wouldnt if you filled its hard drive all the way full.

It truly depends on your needs.
    If you need microsoft exchange
If you need some of the cool new apps
    then upgrade
the issue with upgrade was that on Friday the servers were overwhelmed. When you upgrade the phone is backed up, deauthorized from ATT, its memory is whiped, 2.0 is installed, your files are placed bak and the phone is re-authorized with ATT. when the servers were swamped people could not re-authorize and hence ended up with a paperweight
The draw bcak from 2.0 is that the phone seems to run slower. Not much but noticebly so.

  • Is 3.1.3 OS worth the hassle?

I've had my iPhone for few weeks now and it's been great. No problems, hassles, glitches, or technical trouble of any kind. Now I'm faced with upgrading to OS 3.1.3 and I'm really hesitant for two reasons:
    1. There are a lot of posts on here indicating problems with the updating process or resulting troubles after updating.
    2. I have a slow internet connection (dial-up) and I don't relish having my iPhone and computer tied up for hours with the update process.
I'm also concerned that there is a greater chance of failure with a slower connection and restoring the old OS can fail just as easily leaving my phone brick-like even though this is probably temporary. I realize that I shouldn't judge this update based on the number of posted complaints because I'm sure the number of successful and trouble-free installations far outnumber the unsuccessful ones. Having said that, I'm still concerned.
Do the security and functional advantages of this release substantially outweigh the risk of temporarily bricking my phone in light of what I explained above? If you were in this situation what would you do? Thanks.

I have updated to 3.1.3. I normally leave it a fair few days before updating just to make sure there are no massive problems with the update. I have had no problems whatsoever with the 3.1.3 update or any other earlier update. If you do decide to go ahead with the update, it is advisable to update iTunes first to the latest version.
I agree with Randy Fast. There are millions of people who have iPhone’s who never have problems. I imagine that if this forum was specifically for to post to say that I have had no problems with my iPhone, that these posts would massively outweigh the posts of people having problems.
I can only tell you my opinion of the 3.1.3 update, and that is I have had no problems with it, I seem to have a slight increase in battery life too, although I didn’t have battery problems with earlier updates.

  • Is the '11 update worth the hassle that I am reading?

I am a longtime iMovie user and am very hesitant to get the '11 upgrade after reading all of the reviews. I need factual opinions from fellow iMovie veterans. Thanks.

using iM since vers2 ... hope this is veteran enough ...
iM11 is actual the best version of iMovie-b (=iM-a is vers.≤6).
it handles my Cam's AVCHD video perfectly, offers all the 'effects' I need for my home-videos (mainly soccer game documentation), and is fully integrated into iLife suite of apps.
what it lacks: no option for plug-ins (as for more transitions), no option for add-ons (more Themes&Trailers as 'Jam Packs'), no integrated pointers (I'm using the well-known .png trick), the delivered, pre-defined Soccer-theme doesn't hit the needs of this sports (hey, the 'weight' of a player is nonsense, but what about goals, points, places?) ...
technically I don't notice any 'hassle'.

  • Is jserver worth the hassle (java in oracle db) ?

I work at a shop that has many oracle databases many of which I do not work directly with.
A couple of years back I had tried to put the jserver option into a ver 8.1.7.2 db and had a mess where I could not get it installed and could not get it uninstalled. Thankfully this is a dev db. To my knowledge the only way I can get it cleaned out of there is to full export the db, rebuild it from scratch while upgrading to 8174 and do a full import.
Some of the other db in our shop that I do not work with have jserver installed. I believe it is required by oracle applications.
The programmers I work with keep finding reasons to have this installed and I am questioning whether we want to carry this baggage on into the future.
My question is whether oracle is planning to conintue to support this in the future?
I've worked a lot with the everchanging Oracle application server platform. I don't see jserver in the future IAS wise. (to my limited visibility).
Can anybody shed any light on this. What are your opinions on whether I should go ahead and put the jserver in the dev / prod databases for this customer base?
Is the future releases of oracle applications still going to install oracle jserver?
    Thanks for your consideration.

So far as I'm aware, Oracle plans on supporting Java in the database for the forseeable future. If the Oracle Apps stack relies on it, you can be pretty certain that it will continue to be supported.
There are definite benefits to having Java in the database, above and beyond the benefits of having a Java application server like iAS. There is a fairly large class of applications that are written in Java that have no real need for an application server. If you don't need to load balance your middle tier across a bunch of app server boxes, there's no need for the extra app server box nor the extra layer of infrastructure. Also, if you have particularly data-intensive routines, co-locating them in the database is a great performance benefit.
If your developers are asking for the feature, I'd strongly suggest giving it to them. After all, you've already paid to license it-- why not get some benefit? I never installed JServer on 8.1.7.2, so I don't know how difficult it was in those days, but I've not had a problem installing it in a 9i database.

  • Migration - Is It Worth The Hassle?

I have to say that I LOVE the look, feel, and incredible technological advantage of using the latest and greatest Java IDE - Netbeans 6.0.1
I love the way it feels and I love the code completion and formatting. I love that I can add a parameter within parentheses and when I press the semi-colon, the cursor automatically jumps past the the right side parenthesis and places the semi-colon exactly where it is supposed to be. I love the Annotation integration because Netbeans uses Java 1.5 and I have been using JSC2 and have been limited to Java 1.4. I love JSF 1.2 Woodstock Components . . . they look and feel better than the 1.1 components I have been using in Creator. I love the responsiveness of Netbeans as compared to JSC2 on the same development laptop that I use. I am constantly amazed at the new and exciting plugins that are available.
I was especially excited when I read Winston's Blog and found out he wrote a Converter plugin that converted a JSF 1.2 Java 1.4 Project to a new JSF 1.2 Java 1.5 Project. I was anticipating converting my 35 page app and taking advantage of a really GREAT IDE in Netbeans 6 but, oh the problems!!!!!!!!!
I did what every good rookie developer does . . . I backed my project up in rar format and opened it up in Netbeans. The first time the classpath was hopelessly screwed up unless package javax really doesn't exist and I'm a whole lot more lost than I thought I was! So I deleted my userdir in Netbeans and made sure I had all the correct plugins installed . . .
    1. Winston's Project Converter
    2. Java EE
    3. Visual Web Pack
    4. Visual Web JSF Backwards Compatability Kit
I had them all so I tried again first deleting the userdir and then opening the 1.4 Version of the Project and after it was opened I converted it.
On the surface this seemed to work fine, but deployment was a different story all together!
    It just wouldn't deploy at all to GlassFish V2 bundled with Netbeans . . . I kept getting . . .

I absolutely love Netbeans and really feel like I am losing a Great Deal of advantages by leaving my Project as JSF 1.1 Java EE 1.4. I have no doubt that some will say that using Java 1.4 is sufficient, but I REALLY want to learn Java 1.5 and Netbeans and I have alot left to do with this Project so I want to start using 1.5 now rather than waiting for the next Project.
Has another Developer encountered similiar problems while converting a project? Can you please help me out here? And if more info is needed I will be happy to post it!

  • Is variance worth the hassle?

The longer I think about it and the more posts I read in this forum,
the less convinced I am about the usefulness of "variance" (its latest incarnation being wildcards with bounds).
It obviously complicates the use of generics pretty much, and I doubt
that its application will be so widespread. As you can see from the original implementation of the Generics collections API (without variance), one can get quite far just with generic classes and generic (static) functions, possibly with bounds.
The topic of variance came up after the following assertion had been made:
"a collection of T's should be assignable to a collection of S's if
    T is assignable to S".
This behaviour has been called "intuitive" and "consistent with Java arrays". Well, I challenge that. As we all know, Java arrays may throw
unexpected ArrayStoreExceptions without any explicit casting.
This is not what I call intuitive. Yes, I know that there is great effort being put into making variance better that Java arrays in this respect, but so far the sophisticated rules addressing all the related problems are not really convincing, are they?
So here I plead for the original draft specification for Generics, in which C<T> and C<S> were always unrelated types, regardless of the relationship between T and S. If you really wanted to treat a C<Integer> as a C<Number>, you could still cast it to the raw type C and then to C<Number>.
    What do you think?

Coming back to the java.lang.ref example, I concede
    that, given a ReferenceQueue<Number>, you wouldn'tbe
able to attach a Reference<Integer> to the queue
    without availabilty of wildcards.
Is that a really such a big deal?
You could easily wrap your Integer object in a
Reference<Number> instead and attach that to the
queue. No, that doesn't work with references because the
reference iteself has special semantics understood by
the VM. Wrapping messes up those semantics.
I'm sorry, I don't understand that. I thought that with variance you'd be able to do this:
    static void makeRef( Integer i, ReferenceQueue<Number> q )
    new WeakReference<Integer>(i, q);
Whereas without variance you could still do this:
    static void makeRef( Integer i, ReferenceQueue<Number> q )
    new WeakReference<Number>(i, q);
    Am I wrong here?
You seem to have overlooked phantom references, which
are not cleared before being enqueued. The JavaDoc for PhantomReference clearly states that get() will always return null.
Thus I haven't overlooked it, but I have to admit that I have never fully understand how one is supposed to perform "post-mortem cleanup" with PhantomReferences, so you may well be right on this.
