1st Gen and 2nd Gen - help me?

Ok so i'm confused here...
The 1st gen and 2nd gen iPod touches both have the same 128mb of RAM yes...
So why is it that the 1st gen is apparently incapable of running iOS 4?
Yes, i understand that multi-tasking, and wallpapers(?) are too memory-intensive for the devices with such a small amount of RAM.
But come on, surely something like folders isn't totally 100% impossible for the 1st gen??
I know that the second gen is running @ 121Hz faster than the first but i would've thought that folders require the use of the memory over the processor?

I make no judgements about whether these devices are iOS 4 capable or not. Nor do I offer an opinion about the policy of which devices do, and which do not, upgrade. Nevertheless, it is Apple's policy, and I unfortunately I don't think you're gonna get the answer you seek here... Sorry.
You could try a Genius Bar or AppleCare, but only if you seek a Monty Python-style ‘Argument Clinic’...

  • Can't decide between the 1st gen and 2nd gen 32GB iPod Touch, please help.

I would like to buy a 32GB iPod Touch, the problem is that i can't decide whether i should buy a 1st gen or 2nd gen.
Obviously 2nd gen is "better" but is it worth the extra $$$?
Best Buy has the 1st gen for $310 and the 2nd gen is $400, that's $90 difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    that's $90 difference.
Actually, it's only $80 because the 1G touch will come with the old 1.x software and it cost $10 to upgrade to 2.x software.

  • Can I use the same sync cord for my 1st Gen and 2nd Gen iPod?

I have to replace my sync cord (house fire) and I wondered if I could buy just one cord to sync both my iPods? I have a 1st Gen and a 2nd Gen.

If they both use the same type of cord, 30-pin or lightning, then yes, you can. There is no difference to the internals of the cords, just the connectors. Just match what you need.

  • What is the difference between the 1st GEN and 2nd GEN IPOD TOUCH

    Does anyone know the changes?
Does the 1st Gen have a a speaker?

    In addition...
The 2nd gen will accept headphones with microphone.
The 2nd gen has a volume control up/down button on the case.
The 2nd gen has bluetooth capabilities which in theory will be enabled with the iPhone 3.0 software update.
The 2nd gen can be obtained in a 32GB model as well as the 8GB and 16GB models.

  • Touch 1st gen and 2nd gen headphone jack question

Alright so my headphone jack crapped the bed and i was looking into just buying the jack and repairing it myself. Now when i look on the internet for a headphone jack, the only things i see sold are 2nd gen hp-jacks. now would this work in my first generation ipod touch? they look identical. I just want to confirm before i buy it.

the only difference between the the two jacks is the 2G has three contacts compared to just two on the 1g. I would rather replace the 1G's headphone jack with the 2G. Two contacts are for stereo left and right. The three contacts for the 2G is for stereo left and right plus mic. Then you can use your 1g to make wifi calls with Skype. I plan on doing this to my 1g as my 2G already has it from the factory which is one of the changes of the 2G from the 1G. Let me know how it goes.

  • 1 Gen and 2nd Gen ATV

I have both of these hooked to one TV and at first two ATV's showed up in iTunes, but now only one shows up and feel it is 1st Gen as it gives me a hard drive space. I have unplugged 2nd Gen twice but nothing shows up? Any suggestions on how to reset or whatever I need to do. Wireless setup with Airport Extreme

ATV2 doest show up in iTunes unless you physically connect it to your computer with a micro USB.

  • Size difference of dock for 1st and 2nd gen

Hi, I tried searching the forums but i couldn't find a specific answer to my question.
I know that the dock for the 1st and 2nd gen is at a different place, but does anyone know if the exact size has changed? That is, if i have just a plug which was made for the 1st gen nano, can this plug fit into the 2nd gen dock pins?
Any help will be great, thanks!
      Windows XP Pro

All dock connectors are the same, so you can use the same cable.
However, you asked about the dock which is not the same as the dock connector. The dock is this.

  • 1st and 2nd Gen differences?

What are the main differences between the 1st and 2nd Gen Touch? I'm getting ready to buy a 32gb Touch, but I can't figure out what is improved on the 2G. If it's nothing major, I'm just going to get a 1G and save $50.

also, the 1st Gens have old software on them. if you get one you'll have to pay to upgrade to 2.0 and consequential software upgrades.
external volume buttons, longer battery life, the design is slightly different - described as 'sleek and feeling better in your hand'
enough reasons i would have thought for you to go the whole hog and get a new one.

I have an AC adaptor from the Mini, model #A1070 W008A130 and I was wondering if it was compatible with both the 1st and 2nd gen Nanos.
I've been unable to find any power specifications and just want to make sure I'm not going to burn both mine and my girlfriend's Nanos out when we charge them away from a computer.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Differences between 1st Gen + upgrade and 2nd Gen?

Hi all. I was looking into purchasing a new iPod touch, but before I do so, I was wondering if there is any difference between getting an iPod touch 1st generation and purchasing the software upgrade and simply purchasing a 2nd generation? Reason being that I can get a 1st gen much cheaper than the $10 that it would cost to get the software upgrades, so if I can do that it would be great.
So is it a seamless upgrade or will there be some small differences between the two? Thanks in advance for the replies!

Updating a 1st gen Touch to 2.1 is the way to go if you don't care too much about the primary differences, where the 2nd gen Touch has the speaker, external volume control, and slimmer at the edges. I've had both and am glad that I have updated to the 2nd gen Touch.
Note that the 2nd gen Touch does not have the same charging circuit as previous iPod models, so if you have 3rd party chargers that rely on the 12V (firewire) pin on the iPod's dock connector, those won't work. For the 2nd gen Touch you need to have "Made for iPod" designated charging accessories which use the 5V (USB) pin of the connector. Chargers don't specify which pin of the connector they use, so if you go with a 2nd gen Touch be sure that any accessories you buy for it are designated specificatly for the 2nd gen.

  • Atv 2 1st and 2nd gen headaches

i have an atv2 2nd gen amd an atv 2 1st gen, the 1st plays movies through itunes perfectly with no problems, the atv 2 2nd gen will not play those same movies, i have to air play from my pc to the unit for it to play.

Is this with streaming local content or renting through iTunes?
I was assuming you were doing the latter. If so, see below.
If you set up the ATV to use a DNS other than your ISPs then yes that would be an issue, that's what I am trying to get at. It would not have to do with browsing but would affect streaming on the device.
If you have set it up with the default DNS then that's fine.
If you're using home-sharing check firewall and any anti-virus.

As suggested take it in to see if it's a problem with your unit.
