1st Generation iPod Touch (8GB) won't respond.

Hi,
I have a 1st Generation iPod Touch (8GB) and it won't respond to anything.  I tried restoring and resetting and charging.  When I plug the iPod into my Mac (10.2 Macbook Pro) the iTunes (which is very up-to-date) won't even recgonize it.  My computer doesn't even recognize it as a storage unit.  I tried all of the USB ports and multiple cables but stil, nothing is happening.  I can't even get the screen to turn on and display the apple.
What should I do? Is the battery dead or is my iPod completely dead?
Thanks!

You can work through the five 5 R's of troubleshooting to rule out the possibility of corrupted software.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damaged part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • My ipod touch 8gb won't turn on, recognize a charge and nothing will pull on up the computer. I have only had it for about 8 months.

My ipod touch 8gb won't turn on, recognize a charge and when I plug everything in nothing comes p on the computer. I've had it for about 8 months and took really god care of it.

    Try:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If not successful, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • 1st generation iPod touch-screen stays black

I have a 1st generation iPod touch, but it's impossible to turn it on. I've tried pushing the home- and lock screen-button at the same time, and I've tried charging it, but the screen stays black. What else can I do?

    Try here.

  • Ios 3.1.1 will not download for the 1st generation ipod touch

Why won't ios 3.1.1 download for the 1st generation ipod touch?  It will start and then a second later stop.

Does it happen with the apps that came with the iPod?
Does it happen with all apps you have downloaded/installed?
Have you ried deleting the apps and redownload/install the apps?  You will not be charged again if you are signed into the same iTunes account that originally purchased the apps.
Next would be to restore from backup
Last would be to restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • I have a second generation ipod touch, why won't the ios 5 and ios 4.3 work on ipod touch 2g?

I have a second generation ipod touch, why won't the ios 5 and ios 4.3 work on ipod touch 2g?

Wel your "answer" provides not only a bad comparison, but is disingenuous at its heart!
Apple sold a product (8GB iPod Touch) that one could have assumed to be 3rd generation at the time of purchase (because that was what all the other models of iPod Touch were at the time). Then when ios 4.3 came out, we who purchased one of these units found out that the 8GB Touch was really a 2nd generation model, and it would not ever be updated beyond ios 4.2.1 (8C148). Since the version (4.2.1) is BUGGY, it would be in the best interest of Apple to at least provide a bug-fix update release for these units. It is not like we are asking for all the new features of ios 4.3, just fix the BUGS, please, Apple!

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch No Longer Recognized by Windows 7 PC

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch (no camera) that can no longer connect to my Windows 7 pc. Plugging in the iPod via USB does not trigger any sort of dialog box in Windows and it doesn't trigger a message saying a device has been connected; the iPod does not show up in either iTunes, Computer, Device Manager or Devices and Printers, either as an Apple mobile device or an unrecognized device, and does not charge when connected to USB (though the wall-charger still works). As far as my computer is concerned this iPod does not exist. I had successfully synced this iPod as recently as one week ago and am ready to pitch the thing in the garbage if I can't find a solution.
I have the latest version of iTunes as well as the most up-to-date Windows updates. I have already followed all the steps listed here (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows) multiple times with no success.
I also have tried following the instructions listed here (Re: For those Windows users who suddenly cannot see their device in iTunes. Here's a solution that has worked.) but this also hasn't worked since the iPod isn't recognized in the Device Manager and I am not given the option of updating the drivers, manually or otherwise.
I have uninstalled/re-installed iTunes and all related Apple services multiple times. The Apple Mobile Device Service is functioning normally. iTunes diagnostics indicate that there is no device connected no matter what I do. I have reinstalled my Windows USB drivers and changed the settings on the USB Root Hub in the Windows Device Manager to disable power saving options.
I have tried connecting the device to another PC which detects and syncs another apple device (iPhone 5) with no issues, and had the exact same result: the computer doesn't even recognize an iPod is connected.
I can't update the Apple Mobile Device Drivers because the device is not recognized by my machine in any way.
I even completely reset my iPod and that just left me with a unactivated iPod that still isn't detected.
I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style advice that people seem to offer on this forum. If anybody has dealt with this issue and has any serious advice other than "re-install iTunes," it would be much appreciated.

You said "I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style"
    - Did you try another cable?
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    Try on another computer

  • 1st Generation Ipod touch  keeps crashing/going into stand by mode 3.1.3

I have a 1st generation ipod touch that I recently restored to the newest firmware 3.1.3. My problem is that after this restore and subsequent restore attempts is that the device keeps clicking off to a black screen when I use wifi or transition from different desktop screens. The device does not completely crash as once the screen goes black I can hit the home button an slide to unlock. I have found that if I disable wifi this problem does not occur. I have tried to both reset and restore with no success. Any suggestions or ideas?

If a restore did not help, I'm afraid you have a hardware issue there.

    OR use this method
    1. Press-hold the Home button (big circle below the screen)and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) simultaneously.
    2. Continue holding both buttons (Ignore the"Slide to power off") until the iPhone shuts off and begins to restart.

  • 1st generation ipod touch Software issue

I have a 1st generation ipod touch (software version 3.13). When I attempt to update the software, it says that the software is up to date.  Can I manually force an update or is there something else I can do?

Nope. 3.1.3 is the highest possible for a 1st gen.

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch & Smart Playlists

My 1st Generation iPod Touch will not sync my Smart Playlists. After syncing, the Playlists appear under my iPod touch in the iTunes 11 sidebar. On my iPod Touch all songs/tracks for the playlists load into the iPod's library and can be accessed. Playlist names however either do not appear on the iPod or the ones that do appear may be empty. I've used these same Playlists for many years and have only recently started seeing this. I have done a full restore of my iPod Touch, the OS software is up to date and I've tried creating new Playlists with the same results. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
