  • MacBook Pro very slow and junk mail after using wifi in Italy

After using different wifis in airports and hotels in Italy I am getting lots of junk mail in my inbox.  Also my internet is extremely slow.  I got a new router hoping that was the problem, and ATT checked our line to see if that was the problem.  I 'm afraid I picked up some sort of virus.  Is there an easy solution?

  • How do I use my serial number to find information about my MacBook Pro's Processor and RAM?

So I want to find information about my MacBook Pro's processor and RAM using the serial number because the MacBook no longer works. I remember being able to find this information on the apple website before, maybe by using the coverage checker. Did they take this information out of the coverage checker? Is it no longer possible for a costumer to obtain this information?

Append the last three characters of it to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page.
This won't reveal how much RAM it currently has installed.

Delete any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups (or Accounts) > Login Items
Same for  HD > Library > StartupItems
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Deskop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • After Mavericks Upgrade MacBook Pro Keeps Locking Up?

    Hello everyone,
After a smooth and easy upgrade to Mavericks my main work MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012, keeps locking up, I sen a few other posts on here related to Google Chrome, not sure if my issues are related to Chrome or not, but I do use Chrome as my main default browser and have it open all day.  Not sure where to start to find out what may be the root of the issue, any help would be great, thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • After installing Mavericks OS, My MacBook Pro is Slow and weak?

Recently I upgraded to Mavericks OS system from Mountain Lion. I use MacBook Pro 17" of 2011 with 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7.
Mavericks supposed to be faster and saves more battery life. But it was not in my case. I do most of my work with Ms. Office 2011.
    1) I find the Finder is extremely slow to respond. It takes more than One minute to open the folder files.
    2) I find the Ms.Office is very slow. Powerpoint slides are NOT showing the content on the column view. The system battery goes down very quickly with Powerpoint.
    3) The battery does NOT last more than 5 hours, comparatively it was usually be NINE HOURS.
I have reinstalled the Mavericks as advised by the Apple Expert from Apple Inc.
Still the Problem exist. What do I do?

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Two finger swipe was working for Firefox 7 in my macbook pro running lion yesterday but not today. i have installed Alfred. Has that broken it?

I was able to use the two finger swipe gesture on my macbook pro trackpad in firefox 7. It was working fine but has just stopped working. It does work if I hold the alt key while swiping but that seems a bit pointless. The only thing I have changed on my mac is that I installed Alfred. Has that broken the gesture?

Sorry to tell you this but it's starting to sound like a hardware issue.
Reason being is because youi've had this issue when you had 2GB of RAM, and running Leopard to Snow Leopard then to Lion.
Even after you've reinstalled everything it was still giving you issues.
Ok, try this one.  Open the back of your MB, take one RAM out of the top slot, then turn your MB on and see if it still freezes.  If it does, then take the lower RAM off the botton slot and install it on the top slot.  Turn it back on.  If the problem stops, then it could be your RAM slots.

  • After Yosemite Update, Macbook Pro Frustratingly slow, along with many problems after

    My Info:
    Macbook Pro (2012)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    OS X 10.10.3 (14D136)
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
186.54 GB free of 498.88 GB
Until the last OS X Update (Yosemite), I have had no problems with my almost three year old MacPro.
However, after the last update, I have so many problems with my mac, I just feel like throwing
    it out the window.
Unfortunately, I did not have a backup prior to the update, but I backed up my photos and files, then proceeded
to follow apple's instructions (apple support chat) to erase the HD and re-install yosemite from online. Then, I backed up my files and photos from my external drive. (I used TIME MACHINE)
    Fine in theory, but:
    1. my iphoto library was somehow lost, nowhere to ever be found again
    2. I suddenly have issues with my trackpad--the "double click" or "right" click refuses to work, I cannot drag and drop.
    3. I have java runtime error messages even upon startup, without internet connection, even though I have already deleted anything and everything java related.
    4. My safari is completely useless. Freezes even when only using one tab, must force quit every second.
    5. My computer decides by itself when to zoom in and out of a page.
    6. My apps are completely slow, I most always need to force quit them
    7. My trash has many issues-- If putting a file in the trash, it says "moving file to trash" for hours on end without ever completing the action, also, if I try emptying the trash, it's the same story.
    8. Settings. If I try to change a setting, it says "authenticating" for ever and ever without ever authenticating, and I am unable to change any settings.
I have talked to apple many times but have not yet reached a solution.
I have no other resolution at the moment, as I am in Taiwan for another month (My Chinese is limited and there are few, if none authentic Apple stores around)
I have one more month on my warranty so I can *possibly* take it in to a store when I return home, but I first wanted to ask here and see if anyone else stumbled upon the same issues, or if they had solutions.
    Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in safe mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • My macbook pro turns on and shuts off after about thirty seconds

After force shutting my computer by holding the on button, my macbook pro will not start up anymore. It displays the loading screen for around thirty to forty seconds, but shuts off immediately after that. My battery is in good condition and works fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi ltksm,
If you are having issues with your MacBook Pro shutting down unexpectedly, you may want to try resetting the SMC (System Management Controller). You may find the following article helpful:

  • 2009 15" MacBook Pro is sluggish and sometime reboots in the middle of work

    Hey everybody.
Just got my repaired (liquid on keyboard ) 15" MacBook Pro back from the Apple Store a few weeks ago. I haven't upgraded anything since, but now the screen frequently gives me the "rainbow beachball" icon and everything stops for several minutes. On three occasions (including moments ago!), the laptop simply rebooted. Thankfully, I had just done a command-S to save my work in progress.
Two days ago I rebooted from a CD and ran Disk Utility which DID find some errors and declared them fixed. After some rainbow beachballs last night, I ran Disk Utility again from the hard drive and it did find some permissions that needed to be repaired. With this latest crash, I felt that I should reach out for other ideas.
Any thoughts why I'm having these problems?

Call the Apple Store that repaired it. You need to advise them that you are having "issues."

  • Macbook Pro 13" late 2013 no response after efi update

Yesterday I installed the recommended EFi firmware update (either 1.2 or 1.3, I can't find out yet), everything installed fine and run well. In the evening I put my mbpro into sleep mode, today in the morning I was not able to restart it. If I press the power button, only the startup sound is played.
After pressing the power button, display (intern and extern) remains black, only the white apple on the cover is illuminated. No keyboard response and backlight either. Remote access also not possible.
I did reset the SMC (left shift+ctrl+alt+power) -> the charger LED showed the expected reaction. But nothing changed afterwards.
Anyone's got the same effect? What can I do? Please help. Many thanks in advance.
Macbook Pro 13" Retina Late 2013
    16GB RAM, 512MB SSD
    Intel i7 Haswell

Short update: After reading a while I tried several keyboard shortcuts during start up ... and I solved the issue:
Hold Command + Option + 'p' + 'r' during startup. This zaps the PRAM (Parameter RAM), an option that long-time Mac users will remember. Press and hold the key combination until you hear the second set of chimes. Zapping the PRAM returns it to its default configuration for display and video settings, time and date settings, speaker volume, and DVD region settings.
Thanks to all people who document such issues and its solution.

  • Macbook Pro heating up and draining battery after yosemite upgrade.

On Friday, I upgraded to Yosemite and I really like it. However my computer keeps heating up very quickly when doing simple tasks and the battery also drains. About 1% every 2 minutes when on Safari and having Pages open in the background. What can I do to slow down the battery drain. Before, on Mavericks I could get a whole day on Safari but now about half a day.

Nothing obvious here, but better get rid of that remnant of CleanMyMac2. Also check if all software with kernel extensions, launch agents and launch daemons is still necessary and up to date (if not uninstall or update).

  • HT4972 if you backup everything prior to update to ISO 5 then click all buttons under summary after transferring all paid apps from iPad and then I do the update, won't the restore then  just put the old OS on it.  I am sooo lost when it says the way you

    Dear iPad Wizards,
I am a beginner. I have an ipad and I need to upgrade to ISO 5 and I have purchased APPS on my iPad.  All the warning are scaring me.  Right now all of my sync square buttons are not turned on.  One of the warnings says I will loose my apps if I don't transfer them.  I did that (with another warning).  Then it said to back up the iPad, which I did. Heck all I want to do is upgrade my version correctly.  It then makes a statement that is something like when you are updating your version, make sure you have all your apps sync set normal, but when I do that it says you will loose all apps, but what the heck is normal (I say at this point).  So, since I am so lost and don't know what to do, do I just chuck it up to a learning experience because if I now restore everything after I do the update it seems that it will restore the old ISO...Am I correct.  I was just really thrown for a loop with that statement that is highlighted and I am still no where except backed up and apps purchased transfered to itunes.  Anybody else in the world ever have this happen to them?  I am truly thankful for anyone who might be able to help me.  I am thankful in advance if anyone understands this email.  Looking forward to someone who understand.
    With Many Thanks

To update to iOS 5.1.1, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases - you may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.
