Today I installed Duke on my machine, I mentioned two little bumps:
- Installation via ftp-iso (25MB) doesnt work. Downloading the packages from base doesn't start, but synchronising the package database with the mirrors (I tested it with different ones) works fine before. There were no error message or something like this, it just happend nothing ... Anyway, I downloaded the base-isos and installed Duke with them. Works fine.
- While starting XFCE I run into problems with /tmp. By default, it is not writable for every user. Why? Of course, it is easy to fix, but in Voodoo there was no need for that, /tmp was writable for everyone. Is there any reason for this change or is it only a little bug?

Arch Linux 2007.08-2, "Don't Panic" has been released.
This is the first release to use our new repo layout.
There are two ISOs, ftp and core.
Changelog:
GENERAL:
- kernel 2.6.22.9 usage
- disabled arch_addons hook by default, it is now triggered by arch-addons
boot parameter
- RAM usage has increased, these are the new recommendations:
- 256 MB (FTP-ISO,CORE-ISO arch boot image)
- 96 MB (CORE-ISO lowmem boot image)

- fixed the nasty /dev mount bug
- fixed the /dev/ttyS0 errors if no serial port is installed in the system
- fixed repositories in install environment to fit to both architectures
- fixed km to not show broken chars after exit
- fixed grub installing with xfs filesystem
- fixed package clearing if setup option was chosen
NEW ITEMS:
- added pptpclient to install environment
- added sdparm to install environment
- added all free wireless drivers to install environment

stripped everything out that is not necessary for installation
As usual check md5sum before using the images and also be aware of the new
RAM recommendations the images have.

I think I did it as it should be:
1. /arch/setup
2. km
3. following the menu order
3.1. Network configuration --> no problem
3.2. cfdisk --> no problem
3.3. allowing the partitions + formatting them (reiserfs)--> no problem (but not sure it formatted: it went so fast)
3.4. choosing packages --> chose base packages and did not change anything (about 98MB of download) --> no problem
3.5. kernel installation --> no problem
3.6. system configuration --> /etc/rc.conf (was good configured, so no modification) and /etc/fstab (had to add hard disk's partitions, /dev/sda2 for windows vista, /dev/sda3 for swap, dev/sda5 for / and /dev/sda6 for /home
3.7. installing the boot loader (grub), editing /boot/grub/menu.lst and put grub on the MBR --> no problem
3.8. reboot
and my system restarted with opensuse10.3 grub, partitions were not changed (my suse is working ext3fs), and my old system was here back and healthy
I'll have a new try this evening, just to be sure I did not forget something.
I have userd arch for more than 2 years now and installed it at least 10 times without problem (or with problems I could resolve on my own) but I never had this "non-installation" problem

Installation feedback:
I installed Arch in virtualbox on a Windows XP host and after it initially hung up on boot (enabling acpi and apic was necessary), everything worked fine.
I was very pleased to see the pacman mirror selection dialog, apart from a "missing" pacman -Sy (I wondered why I couldn't install xfce4...everything was set up perfectly and it took me a while until I realized, that the local package database only includes the current repository) there was no need for post-configuration for the base system. I haven't checked for rankmirrors this time, but
Setting up X and xfce4 was done quickly and I had no further problems.
I was using the FTP-install-image.
Edit: Stay away from Safari for windows, it will not send or copy text fields containing a '[' or ']', it just cuts away everything following this character.

2007.11-0.4 Isos released, installation feedback

1 week testing should be enough,
I tested them in kvm-qemu and didn't find an issue.

The installation went fine.
just three little things:
1) I got this message a couple of times:
"INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"
Somewhere on the forum I read that you would try to fix that message, although it's not a real issue, it doesn't look nice either.
2) I remember this from the other iso's too:
When I deselect iwlwifi-drivers and install ipw3945-drivers instead, still iwlwifi gets added to the MODULES-line in rc.conf instead of ipw3945; so I have to replace iwlwifi with ipw3945 in the MODULES-line and add the deamon ipw3945d to the DEAMONS-line.
It's not too much of a bother but it would be better if fixed I suppose, there are quite a lot of people that still need those drivers.
3) It seems that, in time, a little configuration of the 'Install Packages' part of the installation went wrong.
From the 'Official Arch Installation Guide' when it comes to the point of 'Package Selection':
(...)you have the opportunity to specify whole package groups from which you'd generally like to install packages, then fine-tune your coarse selection by (de)selecting individual packages from the groups you have chosen. (...)
The "Select all packages by default?" question can be easily misunderstood; Basically you are asked whether you want all the packages in the categories you just chose to be selected or not. If you select YES, the whole list of packages contained in the chosen categories will be displayed and selected, and your job will be to deselect what you do not want. If you select NO, the same list of packages will displayed, but only packages of the BASE category will be selected, and you'll have to explicitly select any other packages you want to install.
With my installations till now, cause I need the ipw3945 driver for example, I always need to check base, lib and support categories. At the question "Select all packages by default?" I always choose NO, but after that I will have to select all base packages myself, so the pre-selection of all base packages is gone somehow. I don't know for how long this is going on cause I am still very newbie.
That's all I think I hope you did well on you exams; I'm getting behind at university with all this arch-stuff to play with

Install Arch from 2007.05 "base" iso or the "current" iso?

My old Arch install (0.7.2, upgraded in Nov. 06) may be broken, and I'm thinking of doing a fresh install of 2007.05. For the old install, I'd followed the recommended procedure of installing just the base system from the CD iso image, then installed the xorg and kde metapackages via pacman and then built the system from there.
At present, Arch offers a 2007.05-Duke.current iso of 550 MB that includes Xorg plus other things (but not KDE), on top of the base package. What exactly is the virtue of this bigger iso over the base package iso (150 MB). Why are the devs offering this bigger "current" iso, and is this the preferred way of installing Arch now?

You could also take it one step further, and use the ftp iso (a mere 27MB for i686, 35MB for x86_64) - that basically provides the installer only, and downloads everything else from the repos. Of course, as with slackhack's "base + upgrade" suggestion, a decent net connection is essential for an ftp install.

Duke ISO no working network, or even since 2.6.20-7

after losing all network connectivity after 2.6.20-7 and nothing fixed it I gave up, However the install CD's worked fine network wise, after install/update was a diff matter.. all modules were loaded and fine, log outputs showed nothing wrong, nothing missing everything is as it should be ... manual starting network gave same error, "eth0 timeout" nothing changed since 0.6 in my setup but whatever. Seeing the new Duke can transfer the network setup to the installed system I said great, imagine my surprise to see that the cd couldn't even establish a connection at all, even after manually loading the module, interface is shown fine , dhcpcd fails to even run. simple eth0=dhcp connection using forcedeth, have even tried using my netgear card instead since this all began ( and disabling the onboard ) no go no dice.. I'm getting to the point of leaving arch for something else that just works sad to say... Anyone have anything at all to suggest or try before the towel gets thrown in?? ( all cd's voodoo & duke are base installs only if it matters )

The original archlinux-2009.02-ftp-i686.img USB image was broken, a new image (archlinux-2009.02-2-ftp-i686.img) has been uploaded. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
With one image broken, we also had to create new torrents: We now use a single torrent per file again and added more mirrors to the webseeds. All seeders should stop seeding the old torrent and get the new ones.

Merge all ISO images of Oracle Linux into a single ISO (single installation media)

I have downloaded Oracle Linux 7 ISO files :
V74844-01.iso (4.1GB)
V74845-01.iso (340 MB)
V74846-01.iso (3.4GB)
V74847-01.iso (2.1GB)
Is it possible to merge all these ISO files into a single bootable ISO file, and write it to a 16GB USB stick to use it as installation media?

None of them. Only V74844-01.iso is required for a fully functional installation.
V74845-01 is a boot ISO and is used by network administrators when creating network-based automated boot/install solutions that require the installer to run the UEK instead of the RHCK. The default ISO uses the RHCK.
V74846-01 and V74847-01 contain the source code for all the packages that ship on V74844-01. This is required under the terms of the Open Source licenses under which Oracle Linux is shipped. This is only required if you want to modify and recompile any of the packages provided by Oracle Linux.

I too had this issue initially but in my case I had missed out on the following steps :
1.
From a command-line, launch the WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST), for example:
WLS-HOME/as11r1wc/common/bin/wlst.sh

The WebLogic Scripting Tool (WLST) is a command-line scripting environment that you can use to create, manage, and monitor WebLogic Server domains. Refer to the Oracle Fusion Middleware Oracle WebLogic Scripting Tool document for more information.

After the WebLogic Scripting Tool initializes, type connect() and press Enter.
3.
You are prompted to enter the username, password and Admin server URL. Enter these values and press Enter.
4.
Once connected to the server, run the following command to register your WSDL:

.ISO re-installation problems..

I am trying to re-install windows 7 Home Premium on my crashed PC.
Currently, I am using a spare laptop to download and prepare everything. I am trying to do this myself, rather than taking it to a store for a less stressful, but costly fix.
The sticker on the back of my laptop says "X16-96072". I understand this to be the version of Windows in need to download.
Of course, I have no disk, but DO HAVE a product key by way of a sticker on the back.
This is what I want to do:
Download a secure version of W7 Home Premium, re-install using a USB from boot-up and continue a quiet existence in life.
I do not understand why this is so difficult! I am clearly doing something wrong, but I cannot find advice that will help me solve the particular problems I am having.
I have found and completed (I think) a video tutorial on making my USB bootable through creating a partition using command prompt. I have downloaded W7 .ISO and have PowerISO v4.7 installed for the next part.
This is what I did:
Download ISO file. Open file in PowerISO. Select all files. Extract to a new folder on the desktop. Copy the items of the desktop folder on to my USB (prepared as bootable).
The problem comes when I extract files to the new folder on the desktop. I get a message saying "unexpected end of file found". The process allows me to continue copying the files to the USB.
Where am I going wrong? How might I remedy this error message?
I would really appreciate some help from people that know far more than I do about computers.

Could be a corrupt download of the .ISO file, see step #2 below to verify that you have no corruption.
1) Download the appropriate Windows 7 .ISO file which includes Service Pack 1
(Note: must match what your product key version is for)

a) Launch HashCalc and navigate to the location of the .iso file you downloaded.

b) Remove all check marks from the list of HashCalc options except for SHA1.
c) Click the ‘Calculate’ button and wait for the SHA1 string of letters and number to be displayed.
3) Next use ImgBurn (or Gear ISO) to create a bootable DVD. (See step 4 for USB flash drive)
Choose the “Custom Installation (advanced)” option and remove the check mark(s)
to eliminate unwanted options.

Latest R12 release installation.

Hi All,
I have to install the latest R12 release. I can see that latest version is 12.1.3. Can I install it directly or should I need to install the base version first and then apply this patch on that?

Install 12.1.1 then apply 12.1.3 on top of it (as 12.1.3 does not comes as a fresh installer).

Pre-release installation fail.

I've downloaded Pre-release file: AdobeInDesign10-Mul_x59.dmg and can't get past the Welcome screen. I don't have a serial number or subscription # for my CC acount, and don't want to install a trial if I don't have to. Through Live Chat I was told this is a technical problem and to try asking here.

MOSS 2007 Service Pack 3 (SP3) Installation.

Hello All,
We are planning to install MOSS 2007 SP3 on the Production environment. Prior to that, the plan is to install this on Dev and UAT environment first and then proceed to Production environment.
Production MOSS 2007 SP2 environment has the following Farm Topology.
2 WFE's , 1 APP server and 2 DB servers. Following are my questions.
1) What would be the best approach to install SP3? Is it to install SP3 across all WFE's and APP servers one shot or install it on 1 WFE first , validate it and then based on the result..proceeding forward to install on the other WFE and APP server?
2) Do we have any articles or guidelines provided by Microsoft on how to install MOSS 2007 SP3?
3) What should be the check list for this?
4) What aspects need to be considered for Validation purpose? Do we need to validate MOSS2007 OOTB features or only customizations?

I have some usability feedback as well:
Under the "Configure System" step, there's both a entry called "Pacman-Mirror" and one called "/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist".
When I click on "Pacman-Mirror", I get asked if I would would like to use the same mirror as i used for the FTP install. As the mirror I wanted to use wasn't in the mirrorlist earlier, I select no to this question. Instead of getting back to the Configuration menu, I am now asked to select a mirror from the list. I manually go through from top to bottom and select the best mirror, even though that's not the mirror I would like to use. I'm now back at the Configuration menu, and see that the next entry is called "/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist". I click on it, removes the first three lines (from the setup entry), search for my country and uncomment the mirror I want.
I suggest to change the above behaviour, by merging "Pacman-Mirror" and "/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" into one entry (probably just called "/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" to make it fit nicely in the list). When clicking on that entry, you'll get the question if you want to use the mirror from the install. If you click yes, the lines are added to the mirrorlist and the file gets opened with the editor. If you click no, the mirrorlist is opened with the editor immediately.
This would make it much more intuitive IMHO

- bump to latest kernels and introduce pacman 3.5.2
Hybrid image file and torrent is provided, which include
i686 and x86_64 core repository. Please check md5sum before using it.
Hybrid image file is a standard CD-burnable image and also a raw disk image.
- Can be burned to CD(RW) media using most CD-burning utilities.
- Can be raw-written to a drive using 'dd' or similar utilities.
This method is intended for use with USB thumb drives.

1. I gave you already an answer in my previous post, I don't know why your drive is not mounted autumatically the setup routine has a function to mount cd drive and usb drives.
ls /dev/sd* would be interesting or ls /dev/mmc*
2. It's not that different all is mentioned on the wiki imho, if something is missing just raise your questions here and I try to fix things, if needed.
