2008 IMac screen problems

need some advice here please ..
i have a imac 24"Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz bought in aug 2008 , now i am starting to see what i think are "dust fans " on the display and they are really annoying
i have researched and took the outer screen off to clean behind thinking this would solve it but to no avail, also tried the white screensaver and turn brightness down routes
they are clearly visible along the menu bar and also in the white and the blue boot up screens , also visable in the bootup screens are the outline of my window and dock ,not ghosting but outlines (hope you understand this description )
any way as im not near a apple store (nearest 60miles ) what do you recommend i do
any advice would be appreciated

well today i took the long trek to the apple store ,showed the genius and low and behold was quoted £400 for new display and new front cover panel !!!
took the stance of its only 16 months old and it should never happen to a screen of this age , well the genius says he will talk to the store manager
outcome ....new screen and front cover FREE OF CHARGE
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem

  • 24" 2008 iMac screen going black

My 24" 2008 iMac screen keeps going black then coming back after a while. What temperature would it need to get to in order to knock out the display? I have iStat.
Also, if the screen fails due to graphics card or other component, is it possible to connect an external display to use it until I can upgrade to a mini?
    Cheers.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Early 2008 iMac screen burn

I have an early 2008 24" iMac which has been our faithful family computer.  It started slowing down quite a bit so we bought a new one for home.  I then replaced the existing HD with an OWC SSD.  It helped immensely, like having a new computer.
Brought it to the office, upgraded OS to Yosemite, running Parallels and Windows 8.  Suddenly I have screen burn.  Never had this problem before upgrades.  I've only had it at the office for the past 1 week.
Now I have to admit, I don't think she's gone into sleep mode at night so I need to check the settings.  But I can't believe this happened so quickly.  Is there anything I can do to fix the problem or is my screen irreparably damaged?  By the way, I tried Jscreenfix without success.
    Thanks in advance
    John

It's actually not screen burn, so you don't need to worry about that. Please read Apple's advice on the subject:

    Hi,
I received this mac yesterday from an eBay seller. Everything once booted is running well, I spent most of the day yesterday installing various softwares such as the Adobe Creative Suite (CS6). Then all of a sudden, after around 8 hours of using the machine and editing some video content on Premiere Pro, I get this black screen (with absolutely no warning). The computer didn't change tone or anything with the way it was running, it sounded the exact same as it was. It wasn't like there was no signal coming from the graphics card, there was a signal, it was just a black screen (no cursor or anything). Eventually, I had to turn off the computer using the button on the front.
I have messaged the person who sold me the computer about this, and he has said "The problem is very simple: VGA card goes to sleep. You can change the 'go to sleep time' as Windows system, but don't know where this is with a mac". I've googled to the end of the earth but can't seem to find anything on it!
I've attached these screen shots too just in case...
Any help would be greatly appreciated or happy to answer any questions,
    Thanks,
    Sam

  • Another 27" imac screen problem

Hi all, just wondering if any of you have encountered these screen anomolies before (video link at bottom of post)
basically, ive had my mac a few months now (traded a constantly overheating and blowing up macbook pro for it).
I am an animator and so occasionally use my mac to render out 3d animations, meaning leaving it going for about 6 hours on average for a few seconds of animation, i also occasionally play games on both osx and windows 7.
Anyway it seems to have developed few different problems with the screen which at the moment i believe to be heat related.
Firstly there is the 'fog' problem that covers a large area from the top left of the screen (and a little of the top right) only its been there for weeks and weeks now hasnt got any smaller even when the machine is left on or left off and before people start telling me to remove the glass panel, im not going to do that because of dust sticking to the inside and also because the 'fog' has not behaved in the same way as it has for other people (dissapearing and reappearing as condensation would)
secondly, in the top left of the screen an area of crazy shaped wavey lines which look very much like they have been caused by heat and is a good few inches in length has appeared, although it this problem cant be seen when the screen is on, for a £2000 computer is annoying especially accompanied by other problems.
last but not least two small round marks have appeared near the centre of the screen which at first impression seem to b burn marks, perfectly round, slightly brown on the inside fading to white (colour may b a little difficult to tell in the video)
none of these problems are visible when the screen is on, and in the video the screen is a little grubby but i assure you i have tried cleaning off these marks to no avail.
it seems from my experience with apple computers that the products nowhere near match the service which is a shame because the service is the best i have ever experienced anywhere
any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

this is what surprises me, you live in california where apple must test its products, which without a doubt has a substantially hotter climate than Birmingham UK which is has its fair share of heat but only about 2 or 3 weeks of the year could it come close to california temps, yet every mac i have had some problem due to heat, i do some pretty demanding stuff with this one but nothing that a £2000 machine should have a problem with (i can understand my macbook pro blowing up seeing as it often got waaaay too hot)
i'm beginning to think a mac pro may be the way forward which would be an option for me if i was in the US but for some reason i cant figure out the UK market is being discriminated against to the tune of an extra £500 which i believe is nearly $800 at this moment in time.
quad core mac pro starts at $2499 (£1500) where as here it starts at £1999 ($3100)
a shame considering i cant get one because i cant afford that one and a screen....whats going on apple?????
Well I just discovered a couple of things I am concerned about. 1) I have a noisy Western Digital Drive. I can hear it read and write. My iMac Quad Core 2.8 is dead silent. It has a Seagate Hard Drive which is supposed to be noisy but its not. The Western Digital Dives are supposed to be quite. 2) I also have a buzzing noise coming from the exhaust ports when the screen is turned down low or when it gets hot doing intensive tasks.
The screen itself is great, no yellow tinge as some have noted.
I am considering getting a complete replacement.
    Thanks!

  • 24 inch iMac Screen problems after 10.5 upgrade

After upgrading to 10.5 i have had many issues with the display my iMac (white) 24inch Core 2 Duo. I have corruption resulting in horizontal lines across open windows and in some cases on the desktop itself. Some of the button text turns bright green. The iMac in question was purchased with the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT graphic card upgrade. I have run the 10.5.1 software update and the firmware is all up to date. Has anyone had the same issues? Does anyone have a fix? Help please.
I have upgraded my MacBook with no issues at all!

If your iMac keeps on freezing it could be a hard ware problem, the first thing to do is run Apple Hardware Test on your iMac.

  • IMac Screen Problem?

Hi, As you can see in the image below, there is this bright squiggly object in the bottom right corner of my iMac's screen. The computer is just under 4 years old. It is much more visible in person, and the artifact, or whatever it is, has depth to it, indicating to me that it is inside the screen or at least behind the glass. I have just started noticing this now. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • My 2008 iMac will get to the white boot up screen and has the loading circle and then it will freeze. And will freeze when attempting to boot recovery or bootable disc of Mavericks

Hi there, I have a 2008 iMac 24' 3.06 Intel Duo with 4gb ram. And yesterday it was working totally fine and jolly with no issues. Then I noticed there was an OS X update for Mavericks, so I finally decided to do it, and once it was rebooted it went to like the grey screen and I could move my mouse, just nothing else was there. So I tried to restart it, and then it booted up, but was really laggy, and so I decided to restart it and try again, this time the iMac froze at the login. So I decided to take it apart, pull the 500gb hard drive, connect it to my MacBook Pro, and then formatted it in Disc Utility. From there, I opened the Mavericks installer on my MacBook and then installed it to the iMac's hard drive via usb hard drive enclosement. And once the install of Mavericks was completed, I put the hard drive back into the iMac and tried to boot it. It now boots up to the white screen with the Apple and the loading circle underneath the Apple and then it freezes and doesn't go any further. So then once that happened, I turned it off and tried to boot it into recovery mode. Then it freezes on the screen with the Apple and loading circle below it. Then out of desperation, tried to use a bootable disc of Mavericks to see if i can at least get the iMac to boot up again, with no success. It froze at the same point again. So now I reach out to the Apple Community to see if anyone else has an idea on what I can do or if anyone had this issue and what they did to resolve it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

mddcfilms and Pat75, I'm having precisely this same issue -- no booting but spinning and freezing gear under the Apple logo. Have either of you come to a resolution? Here are my details:
    iMac, Early 2008, 24”, 3.06 GHz, 4GB
September 2013: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS GPU repaired, HDD replaced with Western Digital 2TB
21 April 2014: Erased HDD with Disk Utility on Mavericks USB; clean installation of Mavericks from the USB. Process completed without issue, including registration process. After a minute or two of poking around, machine shut down immediately (not through the shut-down process).
Since then it will not boot up. Grey screen and Apple logo appear, with gear spinning; the gear freezes, then the machine tries to boot up again. Occasionally I’ll hear “To use English for the main language, press the return key.”
I’ve tried booting into Safe Mode; same gear freeze and restart.
I’ve tried booting to the 10.9 Recovery disk; same gear freeze and restart.
Tried booting from Mavericks USB; same freeze and restart.
Tried booting from 10.6.3 DVD; same freeze and restart.
Ran Apple Service Toolkit (at Stormfront in the UK), which turned up nothing in error.
Started in single-user mode to test HDD and RAM, which are fine.
Started in verbose mode to check logs; some error messages but nothing seems crucial. After the log screen, the grey screen and Apple logo appear, gear spins, and then freeze.
Cannot get to Apple Hardware Test (vintage machine too old?)
Cannot get to Target Disk Mode with my MacBook Pro
Ideas: Potential booting flaw in Mavericks installation. Firmware incompatibility with Mavericks. Hardware issue in Nvidia GPU (known for problems). At the moment I'm hoping that it's a Mavericks installation or firmware issue, though I suspect the Nvidia GPU has blown up on me. These graphics cards are known for being pieces of junk, so I may try installing the lower spec ATI Radeon 2600 GPU if I can find one at a reasonable price.
Anybody else have precisely these problems or have any advice?

  • IMac (early 2008): grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have recently had a problem with my iMac - it started with distorted graphics and I booted into Safe Boot to back up all files with the intention of reinstalling OS X (either from original install CDs or from USB drive with Mountain Lion on).  Safe Boot got rid of the distorted graphics but as I rebooted to reinstall, the iMac hung on the spinning wheel on a grey screen with the Apple logo.
I have tried (in no particular order) : resetting PRAM and SMC, booting from original install CDs, booting from the self-created Mountain Lion USB stick, booting into Safe Boot again, booting normally, taking out keyboard/mouse and booting normally... the pinwheel either freezes, the iMac reboots itself, or comes up with a screen telling me to reboot due to a problem.  If I hold down command-V at startup it always freezes/fails at the same point and there's usually a previous shutdown cause of 3 or -128?!
I don't seem to be able to run the hardware test either from DVD or internet, I can boot into single user mode and the iMac will stay up for hours but I don't know what to look at or what to fix!  There are kernel panic logs relating to some of the shutdowns but as I can't view these out of single-user mode I can't attach them to the post but can look & reply on another machine.
It's an early 2008 iMac, 24" screen, running OS X 10.8.2 - I'd appreciate any help and will try to provide any extra information anyone needs (that I can glean from single user mode, anyway!)
    Kind regards,
    Carly

I've looked at that, I did try to link the discussion to the article but it failed too   Thank you though.
I just created an Ubuntu DVD to run - the graphics are distorted on that too so I'm guessing it's a fault with the graphics card.  I don't have the knowledge to confirm/deny it so a trip to an Apple Store is probably in order?

  • How do I transfer data from an old Powerbook G4 w/non working screen to my 2008 iMac. I want to save my photo collection.

I have an old G4 Powerbook that has suddenly lost it's screen. It just flickers at times. I want to get the iPhoto data with lots of pictures out of the G4 and onto my 2008 iMac. I have no idea how to network these two and it is complicated by the loss of screen on the laptop. I know the laptop is up and running after I TURN IT ON BECAUSE WHEN THE SCREEN DOES IT'S FLICKER ON AND OFF BIT I CAN SEE THE DESK TOP. HOWEVER, THESE FLICKERS ARE SO BRIEF I CANNOT PERFORM any TASKS (woops) on the laptop. Help???

I will post my experience just in case someone else has this problem. John was right about the Firewire cable being the 800 9 pin job for both my PB G4 (2003 version) and my iMac (2008 version). Even though there was no screen to look at on the PB I was able to get into the target disk mode by first hooking up the firewire cable to my iMac and then the PB, then, holding down the "T" key on the PB I started it up. The iMac was already up and running.
It took several seconds but eventually a target disc icon for my PB showed up on the desktop of my iMac. Double clicking on the icon let me have access to all that was in the PB.
Sort of and here is where it got dicey. My PB and iMac do not run the same OSX versions, the PB being pretty old. Additionaly the cause of my concern was my wife's photos stored in some obscure location on the PB and using an old version of iPhoto which did not mesh at all with my iMac version.
After a bit of poking about and trying different work arounds I got lucky and a info box poped up saying that the data needed to be upgraded to be read by my newer version of iPhoto. Long storey short I went down this path and got everything transfered to the iMac. Just not sure how I got on that path, but I did.

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • Problem installing Win7 64 bit on early 2008 iMac 2.66 GHz

I have read posts elsewhere that, contrary to what Apple says, it is possible to install 64 bit Windows 7 on an early 2008 iMac 8,1. The problem I'm having is that I can't get the iMac to boot from the 64 bit Windows 7 install disc. The error I'm getting is "Bootmgr is missing". I can view files on the disc just fine when I'm in OS X, so I know the bootmgr file is on the disc. But it refuses to boot from it. I know this hardware can support 64 bit cause I can boot OS X 10.6.2 into 64 bit mode.
Anyone else run in to this? Thx for any help.

Thanks Hatter. That did the trick. Actually, the link you sent me lead me to this site:

  • IMac early 2008 occasional screen flicker with external monitor

I am experiencing flickering with my early 2008 iMac when driving an external monitor. My Thinkpad is flawless when pushing out to the monitor.
It will be fine, but occassionaly (every 5-20seconds) the screen gives a little flicker, about 1/4 of a second in duration.
Also, sometimes, there is no flickering, it depends on what is being displayed, which makes me think video card. I am using the 2400XT and my software is up to date.
    ROM Revision: 113-B2250H-259
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.259
I am thinking about trying to source a 2600pro that came on the more high end version of my iMac and swap out the graphics card. I also want to drop a 2TB hdd in it, so I figure I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone, or kill 1 iMac with 2 simutaneous upgrades if I am unlucky! (o_O)

iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
I'm providing that so you can look for something equivalent.

  • IMac G5 Graphic Card Replacement for blue screen problem

When I turn on iMac, I only see blue screen, the apple technician said Need to replace graphic card,  Nvidia Gforce 7600GT 256.
1, can it install in IMac?  Seem like it work for PC?
2,  I had blue screen problem several time,  I think I turn on iMac too long, so it burn out graphic card.
3,  I have 2007 G5 24" screen model,  is any durable and afford graphic card you recommend?
Where to buy for cheaper price?
Do I need to change mother board?
4,  can I replace it by myself?  Any picture or video for graphic card replacement?
    Thank you.

If you look around, you might be able to find someone who will replace just the chip on the graphics card, which is what usually fails. It will take someone highly skilled; they really have to know what they're doing--it's not an ordinary soldering job.
Here's someone who found a non-Apple service to do this, and it proved to be far less expensive than a full logic board replacement. But I think this was in the UK.
