I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I have a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad dvd drive. Can I use an external drive?

Is there an external CD/DVD drive that will work on a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad SuperDrive?

    Hi parrotdawg,
Please look at this post first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25385804#25385804
If that doesn't help, I have a Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS External DVD-Writer that works well with my mid-2007 MBP 15".  Note this this drive requires 2 USB ports but doesn't use an external power adapter.  Also, the above trick worked for me after I got this drive, so now I use it a Region 2 DVD player.

  • How to make TRIM in 10.6.8 work for Aug 2009 macbook pro with 120 GB SSD?

Just installed 10.6.8 on a August 2009 Macbook Pro with 120 GB SSD (which is Apple installed memory), and TRIM is not enabled.  When I installed 10.6.8 on an August 2010 Macbook Pro with 500 GB SSD (Apple installed), the TRIM became enabled without me doing anything else.  Is there some procedure I should use to enable TRIM on the August 2009 unit?  Thank you for your advice.  Carl

but there's no proof that such hacking is either safe or beneficial to performance
Not my take on this at all. My Air for example struggled with write fatigue something chronic - after filling it up the drive performance was down to about 40% on benchmarking, and in the real world felt a lot slower than it was. Enabling TRIM and then erasing free-space resulted in it benchmarking back to where it was at new, and the real performance being back to how I remembered it.
The Sandforce controller enabled Vertex 2E - I don't know if it's made a world of difference to that as I don't remember that unit suffering with write fatigue particularly.
The Crucial M225 struggled with write fatigue, and again TRIM sorted it out - and still has.
All the above perf tests/comparisons etc. are all on my blog if you want to have a look see.

I just bought a 2009 macbook pro with an os upgrade to lion. my question is how do i change the previous owners name (like when i bluetooth) to my name???

Your MBP should have been given to you with the original installation disks and OS.  The Lion OS is licensed to the person who sold it to you.  You will have create your own account and purchase Lion if you wish to use it.  Those are the stipulations in the licensing agreements.
    Ciao.

You can use XP but it has to be in a Virtual Machine and OS X as the host instead of as a dual boot system with XP in its own partition. That is how I run Windows on my Mac, in a Virtual Machine.
Take a look at VritualBox from Oracle. It's free and works very well.

  • Problem with upgrading hard drive in 2009 Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard

Current drive is 320gb with fresh install of OS SL updated with some other programs installed.  New drive is Seagate Momentus 750, same brand and model as the old, just bigger.
I install the new drive, boot off the OS SL CD and go into disk utility.  Partition and format with GUID and Journaled. Install starts and ultimately fails every time.
Tried to clone the 320 by putting it in the macbook, use the 750 via usb/sata.  Drive restores, but it is unreliable in loading and stability.  When it gets to the grey screen, it alternately flickers the Apple, Folder and NO sign.  Sometimes it loads, sometimes it just keeps spinning.  When it does load, it's slow and programs that take more power crash.
Brought it to Apple.  They said it was a problem in the SMART section, so I got a new drive under warranty.  This is the THIRD drive i've gotten from Seagate.  Still doesn't work.
I've countlessly repaired and verified the drive.  Helps to load sometimes, but not all the time.
If I put the 320 back in, everything works great.
    Thanks.
    -Ben

Is there a quality external enclosure to put the large drive in, one that has its own power supply and not rely on the port power in the MacBook/Pro? If it is a viable drive and can actually run a bootable OS X version, I'd begin to wonder after all that.
    {I'd also looked up your computer in MacTracker to see what if any limits on hardware upgrade may exist. Nothing said of direct interest to the HDD. Also in everymac.com, so there should be no surprises. Yet to have those problems is troublesome and a surprise. New drives can fail. Maybe in batches?}
And a clone of a working system for backup could be made with a utility such as CarbonCopy cloner or superduper, etc then tested as a bootable clone, with the hard disk drive tested thoroughly before use. It also is odd that a drive of that size would act up, I see drives of even larger size offered online by reputible resellers and Mac specialist companies who have been around awhile, such as OWC. I just looked to see if there was a ceiling on support of larger size HDD capacities, and 750GB is not the largest. Maybe the series you chose could be among a troublesome batch or brand.
http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=302 has a variety of stuff, including RAM, HDD, SSD, etc. And their staff has people who know what they sell. Well, some of them do. I had called them on a topic several years ago and they didn't really have an answer (I was given an OWC dual HDD external drive & it had issues, but had never been used. It still is sitting as-new, w/o support; now obsolete.)
I'd try a different brand and put it into an enclosure that has its own power supply, ports for USB2.0/3.0 and FW400/800, and so on. Perhaps even an OWC line item, not that I've had any valid experience with them here in AK. And ask their people about their products, get names, finger prints, mug shots...! LOL
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • TS2986 I am trying to download Snow Leapard on to a 2009 Macbook pro with version 10.5.8. Help

I am trying to update my Macbook pro 5,5 which has version 10.5.8 which I presume is Leapard. I have a copy of Snow Leapard and am trying to download but every time I click to install I get the message "The Application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this volume.
I have no idea what this means and am stuck. Please help.

    Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs

  • HT1237 My MacBook Pro with Retina Display won't boot nor charge after updating to SMC Update v1.1. What do I do?

I updated my MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the SMC Update v1.1. Everything went well with the installation, and it has successfully been installed amd restarted. After quite awhile, I shut down my MBP. Then when I tried to open it again, nothing happens. I kept on pressing the power button, even tried the shift+alt+ctrl+power, but nothing happens. My battery was on full charge, but when I tried to plug it into power, the LED of the MagSafe doesn't light up as well. What should I do?

I had the same issue and had to take it to the Apple Store and it was sent to the repair depot to get fixed.  Supposedly they had to replace the logic board.  Some posts reflect the fact that in other cases the battery was removed then reinserted by Apple technicians to fix the problem.  There are many who have reported the same issue after this SMC Update and the only fix to the problem for MacBook Pro Retina owners is to have it serviced by Apple.

  • I have a 2009 macbook pro with a power supply problem

I have a 2009 mac book pro. It was work fine with no problems and then one day it wouldn't start, I thought the battery was dead so I had the charger connected and it would start then just automatically go to sleep. It will just stay on for about 10 seconds. I took it to apple, they opened it up and found corrosion and they said I'd have to replace those parts. I was wondering if there is such a way to sync all the music and pictures I have on my hard drive  to my imac with the laptop being off, or if there is anyway I can solve the problem with out the heavy tab $$$???

You would have to bring it somewhere else for a second opinion.

  • Can I replace a failed hard drive on mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 1tb ssd +hdd?

    Any help?

    You might be able to.
Check either Macsales.com or iFixit.com for guides of how to add a second drive to your 2009 MBP.
I know that the SSD needs to be placed in current HDD bay and the HDD needs to be placed in the optical drive bay. So you would need a dual drive kit from either of the places mentioned above.

  • Am I able to upgrade the operating software on my 2009 Macbook Pro to work with Mavericks?

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 4 GB of Ram. Am I able to upgrade the software enough to support Mavericks and other software?

Yes, but you have a couple major caveats:
    Rosetta is gone:
    http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Many drivers may not work.
And you have to buy 10.6 first, then upgrade to 10.6.8, to get the free 10.9 update, then the 10.9.2 update to avoid the security leaks of the first two versions of 10.9.
