2010 Macbook Air with 4GB RAM or 2011 Macbook Air with 2GB RAM

So I am looking a the following 2 Reforebished Macbook Air models:
Refurbished MacBook Air 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FC968LL/A
Originally released July 2011
11.6-inch (diagonal) high-resolution LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
64GB flash storage
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
FaceTime camera
Intel HD Graphics 3000
$789
Refurbished MacBook Air 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/G0JK0LL/A
Originally released October 2010
11.6-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
4GB memory
128GB flash storage
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
FaceTime camera
$799
So my main question is which is better, the core 2 duo with 4GB of memory and 128GB of storage, or is the intel core i5 with 2GB of memory and 64GB of storage better? There is only a $10 differnce so the price doesnèt matter to me.

i would go with the one with more RAM and larger SSD.
Simple reason - you can't upgrade it in the future.
Sure the other one has a faster processor but what's the use of having a faster processor if you only have 2GB of RAM?
The other one is newer, but again, you can't upgrade it.
That's the reason why it's also cheaper........

  • Want to upgrade RAM on 2011 Macbook pro 13 2.3GHz i5 4GB

    Hello all,
First of all let me thanks you guys for the support you have been giving here.
I am new to the forum and this is my first post, I recently bought the new 2011 Macbook pro 13inch 2.3GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 with the 4GB RAM (4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2x2GB)
I want to upgrade from 4 GB to 8GB. I have researched this issue and found three suitable options, i need help deciding on which to buy. Any good brand or compatibility issues
I really appreciate your help guys. The links

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'd worry a little bit about Newegg's "Limited warranty."
OWC is fully warranted — no iffy "limited" on it.
You can use OWC's rebate form to turn in your current RAM and get $26 refunded if you buy the upgrade from them.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/support/rebates/memory.cfm
This would bring the price down to $86.99, but no free shipping, and, presumably, it would cost you shipping to send the modules to them in order to collect the rebate, too.
I'd want to know the details of that "Limited" warranty if buying from Newegg.

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA isn't working. It won't recognize any external monitor. It worked just fine with my older spring 2011 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, but now with my brand new 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, it no longer works

I just bought a new MacBook Pro this summer and was all excited. But I'm very frustrated right now because I can't connect to any external monitors through VGA. My thunderbolt (DisplayPort Mini) to HDMI works just fine, but when I try with my other connector to go from Thunderbolt (DisplayPort Mini) to VGA, Nothing works. my screen goes blue and changes size like it recognized something but nothing is ever detected on the external moniter or projector. I'm not sure what is wrong but it's very frustrating. I'm just very depressed that it worked just fine with my 2-year-old MacBook Pro but isn't working now. I'm running OS X 10.8.2. I just upgraded yesterday from 10.8.1 but that upgrade did nothing to fix my problem. Can anyone help? Thanks

I am haveing this exact same issue. I have plugging in 3 monitors and tried two different VGA to mini displayport and nothing is working. I recently bought a Acer monitor and it work for an hour and now it back to doing the same thing.
When I plug the VGA adapter in to the monitor the monitor think its not connected to a computer then when disconnecting the VGA adapter the monitor thinks it is connected to a computer.
NEED SOME HELP!!! at the point of all my hair is pulled out.

that is the same problem i am having! if anyone can help that would be great i'm losing my mind over here

  • Can I install RAM from 2011 Macbook Pro into 2009 macbook Pro?

I just upgraded my new mbp from 4 to 8gb. I have a friend with what I think is an early 2009 mbp. Can I take my two 2gb (4gb total) chips and put them in his?
Also, if his is newer, same question. I know that recently (not sure when exactly) the memory cap was raised to 8 on the mbp. So I'm wondering if it's a different kind of chip that wouldn't be compatible with older mbp's.
    Thanks for you help!

You can try it, but it may not work, because your RAM is faster than what's specified for his machine. It should downclock to the speed of his system bus, but it doesn't always.
To use 8GB in an early-2009 MBP, it must be running at least OS X 10.6.6 and have the latest Apple firmware update installed on it.

  • My macbook pro 2.2ghz, i7 , early 2011 having problem with the graphic card

hi, just need clarification, that i was made to understand that the NVDIA graphic card installed in Macbook Pro, has a warranty of 3 years, eventough without Apple Protection Plan. Can someone clarify this , as i m having problem with it now.

No, the GPU does not have a seperate 'three year warranty'... unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan.
If you feel that you're having problems with your GPU, take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run a free diagnostic test. If the card is faulty, and you don't have a APP, you'll have to pay to have the entire logic board replaced.

  • Which Microphone for New Mid 2011 Macbook Air 13"

Please recommend a few USB condensor microphones for voice/vocal recordings that is sure to work with the New Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
My 3.5mm to USB adapters that work on my 2009 Macbook Pro with Leopard OS, no longer works with Lion OS
Ill be using this with GarageBand, iMovie & Audacity. Previously I'd use my Azden SMX-10 with the adapter. (the Azden is also used with my Canon DSLR).
    Thanks in advance.

It is entirely possible, as many have known from day one (as ifixit's first teardown revealed). Unlike the unupgradeable memory, the SSD is a discrete expansion card that is removeable with just one screw, after removing the case cover. It is however debateable as to whether such an expansion is worth the possible risk of making demonstrable changes to the MBA whilst still under warranty. So you may want to stave off consideration for a while.
I made the upgrade recently on my older 2010 MBA, and it was easier than upgrading the HDD on my old MacBook Pro.

  • Greastest possible performace with 2011 macbook pro and 2008 airport express

What setting create the fastest possible speeds with a airport express  with a brand new 2011 macbook pro taking use of the 450 Mbits/s. For that, Apple changed their Airport card and also installed 3 antennas (instead of 2 before), something indispensabie to be able simultaneously to use 3 channels of 150 Mbits/s.

    Your router is likely fine.
You should first update the Airport firmware for it, simply run the Airport and Software update.
    See this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3802
And then go to your System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and for IPv6 turn : OFF
Reboot and see how that goes.
When you connect to the router it gives you a lease on a IP address, if your computer's time and date are off this could make the lease expire and you connect and then get disconnected. So check that, see if it holds.
    Reset your SMC and NVRAM/PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Go to your <home> /Library/Preferences and drag the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file to the desktop and reboot, it will be rebuilt, hit your Sytem Preferences and reset them.
drag the useless file on the desktop to the trash.

  • Ram for my Macbook pro

I have a 2.4 intel duo core macbook with 4gb 667mhz ddr2 installed but I want more ram, whats the most ram my computer can be upgraded to? Whats the difference between ddr2 and ddr3?

Is yours a June 2007 MacBook Pro? That's the only thing that I could find with a 2.4GHz Intel dual core CPU...
If so, the maximum RAM that you can install is 6GB - one 2GB module and one 4GB module. The modules that you need are 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2.
If yours is not a June 2007 model, please write back...

  • Native hdv editing on macbook pro 2,33GHz and 2GB RAM

    Hi,
I intend to start editing native hdv on my portable mac. It has a 15,4" monitor, ati mobility radeon X1600 256MB graphics card, 160GB 5400rpm hard disk and a FW800 port. The output will either be hdv to tape or DVD. Can you tell me if it will be a stable configuration?
What about the preview on my monitor - will it be hdv 1440 x 900 resolution? What will be the impact on the color correction process? And about the disk - is 5400 rpm enough or should I try to change it to 100GB 7200rpm or maybe store it all on a FW ext disk? Is it true that if you capture to your hard disk and then transfer it to a FW ext disk the chances of having dropped frames are much less?
I'm just upgrading now to HDV filming and editing so I have all these basic questions and doubts. I hope you understand and help me out. Thanks.
    MacBook Pro 2,33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

It's not good to use your internal drive to run OS X and import footage. Here is some information from Final Cut Pro's manual.
If you need to fit a lot of media files on a relatively small hard disk, such as a
PowerBook (or Macbook Pro) hard disk, you can recompress all your media files. This is the phase of the offline/online workflow when you create the low-resolution, offline quality media files for rough editing.
    Format______________________ Format Typical data rate
OfflineRT (using Photo JPEG)__ Varies between 300-500 KB/sec.
    DV (25)_______________________3.6 MB/sec.
    HDV (1080i)__________________3.6 MB/sec.
Your internal drive should be fine for OfflineRT editing as the format uses much less data rate, so your drive can run the OS and Final Cut Pro at the same time.
The manual tells you how to use the OfflineRT format. It's quite cool!

Yes that is your best bet.  Without looking at it too closely double check your options here:

  • Are you able to increase the ram size in the 11" macbook air or do you have to buy it with the 4gb ram from the start?

I have bought a macbook air 11" with 2gb ram.  I tested it out at the apple store and those products had only a 2gb ram and I did not have a problem with that.  Although I believe this size ram will work for me, I am curious about whether I can increase it at a later time if I choose to do so.

The current MBA's memnory is not upgradeable.
Whatever memory allocation it was built with, is the only memory you will be able to have.
The only way to get 4 GB of ram is to return you air and buy another one with 4 GB.
If you just bought it, you may want to think quickly about the return policy, if you anticipate ever wanting that 4 GB.
But for many users, 2 GB will suffice.

  • Can mid 2011 macbook air use early 2011 macbook pro's RAM?

I just upgraded my macbook pro's ram from 4gb to 8gb.
Can I put my stock early 2011 mbp's ram into a mid 2011 macbook air?

No. The MacBook Air's RAM isn't upgradable, except when configuring a model in the online Apple Store.
