2012 iMac 27" fails to boot AND wake from sleep

Hi all,
My 2012 iMac has recently started giving my trouble when booting and waking from sleep.
When booting - A normal power up results in the apple logo screen being stuck, then I have to hold down the power button for a few seconds until power off, then i power it back up and the computer boots up normally. NOTE: only at the second time does the computer succeed in getting past the apple logo screen to the sign in screen.
Waking from Sleep - When ever the mac goes to sleep he doesn’t seem to be able to wake up. Usually stuck on a black screen with just the spinning wheel shown. At times i waited more then an hour to see if he can get passed the black screen but in vain.
Other then that the mac works fine.
Both issues started roughly two weeks ago and roughly at the same time.
My mac is mostly used for work, I'm familiar with computers so I am trying to be extra careful with installing weird applications but you could never know..
SPEC:
Late 2012 iMac 27'' - 3.4 Ghz i7.
16GB RAM.
1TB Fusion drive.
2GB NVIDIA GTX 680MX
Wired keyboard and a Magic mouse.
Mountain Lion 10.8.5 (Updated and backed up on a regular basis)
Things I've tried:
Boot to Recovery and Repair Disk/Permissions.
Safe Boot.
SMC reset.
PRAM reset.
* The first two produced a single case of a normal start up, but after a shut down the problem remains.
Any ideas/thoughts/help would be much appriciated,
Thanks in advance,
Idan.

Bump.

  • IMac G5 crashes on restart and wake from sleep.....

I have an iMac G5 (2GHZ, PowerPC G5 (3.1) running tiger 10.4.6. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep and I try and wake it up by pressing any key nothing happens and after a couple of minutes the fans come on full blast - I am forced to shut it down with the power button and then restart.
A similiar problem happens sometimes when I restart the mac, it just hangs at the black screen and no apple 'tone' is heard as with normal startup, the fans then come on full blast - I have to then restart as with the above example.
These problems only happen sometimes but are frequent enough to cause concern. I believe the problems might be linked to USB devices connected to the computer as on small scale testing it seems the problems disappear when I unplug all USB devices except the keyboard/mouse.
My current USB connections are keyboard/mouse, Nikon
Coolscan 5000ed scanner, epson photo r200 printer and canon powershot usb cable. No firewire devices are installed but I am connecting to the net via an ethernet cable.
Any advice/input on these issues would be greatly
    appreciated.
    many thanks,
    Alex

pretty standard Logitech 3-button optical mouse. i have been using it for a long time though so i doubt that it is the cause.
    Ahhh!
Logitech released a new version of their control centre a month or two back to cater for some changes in recent versions of Tiger.
Definitely worth checking for the update. THis may conceivably be the cause of your problems. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/categories/US/EN,CRID=1792
[EDIT - I should add that quite a few people have been having problems with Logitech Mac drivers in recent times. see http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14421 for some of the issues. Some people use USB Overdrive instead, for this reason)

  • Boot up and wake from sleep noise from superdrive normal???

whenever booting up or waking from sleep, the superdrive seems to make a loud, not grinding, but close to grinding noise.
this noise is on other mbp's that i tested at the apple store, but it's really annoying, like your drive is about to die.
this happens every time on boot up and wake from sleep. do others find this acceptable or normal?
everything else is great. i do have the cpu idle whine, but it's intermittent and running the mirror widget definitely resolves the issue until the next restart.

that's really unfortunate. coming from pc side of computing, i don't recall such an awful sound when booting up laptops tha t had similar drives.
as for previous apple notebooks, i could only comment on the ibook g3 model which had a more pleasing mechanical sound...kind of like whirring(although not a superdrive).
also, a car cd player mechanism is much smoother and much more quiet. apple should pay more attention to this area like bmw does.
the only solution is to keep a cd or dvd loaded in the drive, but peace and quiet comes at the expense of battery longevity.

  • OS X 10.7.3 WiFi Update for iMacs and Wake from Sleep Problem

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1501
Apple has released a software update for those suffering from the iMac wake from sleep/wifi connection issue that resulted from updating to 10.7.3. It fixes the problem for me and several others. For those still suffering this issue, download it and see how it works!

To answer my own question it seems a workaround is to wake the iMac up using the power button rather than the keyboard. The WiFi reconnects this way.

  • File vault and wake from sleep

I had File Vault on ever since I got my Macbook Pro. It has always been slow to sleep and to wake from sleep -- sometimes taking 30 seconds. Then I turned File Vault and encryption of virtual memory off. Now the Macbook Pro wakes from sleep instantly. Can anyone explain what accounts for the difference?

    Hi, Daniel.
You MacBook Pro employs Safe Sleep. An educated guess would be that using one or both of FileVault or Encrypted VM might incur an additional delay for encryption of the sleepimage file.
Since it is easy to enable or disable Encrypted VM, try turning that back on and seeing if the delay returns. If so, that was the cause. If not, then it would FileVault.
    Good luck!

  • Lion, external monitor, and wake from sleep - please help!

For the most part I love Lion.  However, the changes they made to the external monitor support are not helpful for me.  Let me explain...
I have a 13" 2009 MBP.  In my office I use a monitor stand that the laptop can slide into from either the left or the right, and the monitor sits on top.  Previously I would simply take my closed MBP in sleep mode, slide it under the stand, and plug everything in.  Once the power cord and monitor cable were plugged in, as soon as I inserted something into the USB or SD-Card slot (or I think even the ethernet jack) the laptop would wake from sleep and the monitor would come on.
Now, however, this doesn't happen.  My only option is to plug everything in, open the laptop so it wakes up, then close the lid, then slide it into the stand.  This is definitely NOT an improvement!  Before I had my phone at the left of the monitor stand, and would slide the laptop in from the right.  Now, though, I have no choice but to slide it in from the left (after going through the above hassel), which means I had to move the phone off of my desk.
The energy saving preferences have the "wake on network access" box checked, which would make me think that it would wake up as soon as the ethernet cord is plugged in - but no such luck.  I also have wireless in the office, but it's hard for it to recognize that when it's in sleep mode.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a solution I'm missing here?  I'm using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, so of course those won't do anything while the computer is asleep.

I'm beginning to hate Lion because of this one problem. It's great that Lion doesn't sleep when you close the laptop with external monitor connected. But I can no longer wake the external monitor with USB mouse movement. I have to open and close the lid. This is very inconvenient when switching between two systems with KVM. The MacBook is awake; it just won't wake the monitor.

  • Boot Problem! Slow start up, shut down and wake from sleep mode.

I have a MBP late 2009. I used it a long time whit Snow Leopard, few month ago i did an upgrade to Mavericks.
To start up it takes 30-40 seconds until appear the apple logo. Then 2 minutes more to start up the sistem.
When I wake the machine from sleep mode it takes 40 seconds to be working.
    Shut down 40 seconds.
Even sometime it get frezze using only Safari.
    Things I have tried:
    Reinstall Snow Leopard (clean install)
    Install Mavericks (clean install)
    Replace the HD
    ¿Any idea?
    Sorry for mi poor English

    Chepoka,
have you ensured that all of your installed software is compatible with Mavericks?
If you boot into Safe mode, does it still take 40 seconds to awaken from sleeping, or to shut down? (It will take longer to start up in Safe mode because it will perform “sanity checks” on your boot disk.)
If you have a bootable external disk with Mavericks installed, use Startup Manager to boot from the external disk. Does it take just as long to boot, awaken from sleep, and shut down from the external disk as it does from the internal disk?

  • Screen Sharing and Wake from Sleep

    Hi,
I'd like to know if there's any way a Screen Sharing request from a remote vnc client can wake a Leopard machine from sleep. I've opened the vnc port on firewall, tested screen sharing while its awake... all good. When the target machine is asleep though it doesn't see the request as "Wake for Ethernet Administrator Access" I guess ?
Has anybody found a way to do this? I spoke to Apple support but they suggested I try Discussions.
    Cheers.

None of the file sharing or screen sharing apps actually send the WOL packet. You can have launchd watch the screen sharing app and then send the WOL signal when you use it. There will be a slight delay but it does work. You need to download and install wol as it does not ship with osx. You will also probably want to get "lingon" so you can set up launchd easily.
Commentary: I find it ridicules that this stuff isn't already built into the apps. Electric costs money and using it unnecessarily is a waste. Yet not one of the apps or tools designed to work over ethernet with another computer sends the wol command. Its like the developers expect you to have your computer on 24/7.

  • After Leopard upgrade problem w/dvd drive and wake from sleep

    Hi,
Bought a NEW install disk to upgrade my 15" Aluminum PB (1.67gh, 1 GB Ram,) from 10.3.9. Upgrade went fine, then again did an online upgrade fo software from 10.5 to 10.5.8. Mostly running well. However! There are two problems:
    1. The DVD drive no longer workds, it just spits out DVDs. Now I never had a problem with it before the upgrade and I actually used it for the upgrade dvd. I'm talking, like 5 minutes after the upgrade completed the drive no longer accepts DVDs.
    2. My PB was always a sleepy fellow, like many PB, having some problems every now and again waking from sleep. But this is now almost consistent, every time. And usually I could hear fan noise, or at least a spinning drive. This is just black screen and, even with the lid open, the white light keeps pulsing. Even the restart button does nothing, and I have to unplug it and remove the battery. Then, of course, it will boot up fresh.
Any ideas on either of these two annoyances?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Debbie

If the PRAM battery hasn't been replaced in the last 4 years, check to see that it is.  That may be a costly operation, so call around.

  • Blank Screens After Startup and Wake From Sleep

About half the time I startup my Mac Pro or wake it up from sleep, the screen will go blank, usually about 20-30 seconds after video appears on the screen. The system seems to be running, you just can't see anything.
I have had the screen go completely white, black or blue and occasionally, there will be a solid color with vertical lines throughout the screen. The only thing that will get display back is a forced restart of the entire computer.
I've zapped PRAM and run run hardware test with no issues reported but the problem keeps coming back.
I'm driving a Dell 2407 on my ATI 1900XT. Dell supplied a single-link DVI cable, could that cause issues with a dual-link port on the video card?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   ATI 1900XT, 2GB RAM

Intel Macs, especially MacBook Pros seem to be notorious for sleep issues...either not sleeping when supposed to, or not waking up from sleep properly.
My MacBook Pro has come out of the brief case hot as heck with a dead battery often enough, even with all the updates appled. If you listen to the MacBreak Weekly podcast, that's a common complaint of Merlin Mann, who can't figure it out with his machine, and he's no dummy when it comes to Macs. Not very encouraging, is it?
Still, what I would try is reinstalling the OS X 10.4.9 update. I've often read/heard on podcasts that it's better to manually install the larger Combo version of the updates. That seems to have fixed problems for me in the past.
Get the Intel 10.4.9 Combo Update here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateintel.html
    Good luck.

  • My computer 27inch iMac late 2009 model does not wake from sleep.

Having issues waking my computer from sleep. Seems to be getting worse lately. Can work fine for one or two days then when clicking mouse keyboard there is no response. I have to press the power button for six seconds to turn off then turn on again.

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • I want to use Back to my Mac, but my iMac using wireless LAN will not wake from sleep

I've read a ton of posts, and it seems that others have similar problems.
Here are some details: I have a 2 year old iMac now running updated install of Yosemite. I have a brand new MBP running clean install of Yosemite.
I have a 2 year old AirPort Extreme connecting my home wireless LAN. How can I get my MBP to connect to my iMac using Back to my Mac once the iMac has gone to sleep. Back to my Mac works if all computers are active.
The appropriate energy saver selections have been made. Leaving the iMac awake is not an option.
it just doesn't seem to work. No wake on wireless LAN?
    Help please

Someone else may come along and have an idea, but as far as I know the iMac shuts off wifi when asleep so it can't be used to wake up the Mac. It has to be a wired connection.
Leaving the iMac awake with the display off really doesn't use much energy so it might be worth considering.

  • Bluetooth Mouse and wake from sleep

I have a MS Bluetooth Mouse (Presenter 8000).
It paired ok, and connected. I used it all afternoon and love the feel and responsiveness - although I did loose the connection a few times). Anyway I returned from dinner to find that the system had gone to sleep. The mouse wouldn't wake it (yes I have that option set). So I dug out my old Apple mouse and plugged it in. When I went to the Bluetooth options on the menu bar I got the spinning beachball. Everything else worked fine but nothing on the menu bar (network, volume, date/time, etc can be used - although spotlight was fine).
I relaunched finder but that didn't help. I suspect that a reboot will be requited to get back full functionality. Is there any way to restart the Bluetooth app behind the menu bar BT icon?
So is my new $80 mouse - which I love - going to be too much of a pain with these 10.5.2 bugs?
Anyone else using a Bluetooth mouse? I can't believe I am having this much problem.
I did not install any software from the MS disk, was I meant to do so?

Seems I am the only one using a Bluetooth mouse. I went a bought a mouse with an RF receiver and have packed the BT mouse away.

  • Trouble with bluetooth keyboard/mouse and wake from sleep option

    Hi,
I have a 12" PB G4 that has in-built BT. I got a Microsoft Elite bluetooth desktop (keyboard + mouse) and the keyboard and mouse are recognized by my Powerbook but the option to "Allow bluetooth devices to wake up this computer" option is dimmed so I can't check it.. I googled and came upon Apple's howto on this and downloaded/installed the latest firmware.... no luck.. I opened up the firmware updater in Applications\Utilities and hit the Update button but get an error saying no apple bluetooth module exists... given that the keyboard and mouse do show up in the list of bluetooth devices, does this mean that there is no firmware update for this make of keyboard/mouse?
Anything else I can try to get this option to work so I can use the BT keyboard/mouse to wake up the computer?
    Thanks,
    NG
