my 2008 21.5" 2.4 ghz Intel core duo with 4 GB memory iMac is running OS X 10.5.8 and has recently started over heating and locking up .... even with applications that it has never had problems with before .... I don't think it's capable of being upgraded any further, right? can I upgrade the graphics card or is that even worth it?
Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. The Internet is frequently very slow. I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port. Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.
Thanks very much for any ideas or comments.Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem. Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem. All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's output signal among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.

Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications. -

Had hard drive failure on MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, so had to rebuild the OS on new drive. Was on Lion 10.7.5 prior to failure, but had to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3 since that was most recent OS on media I had. After finally getting ethernet connection to router working, was able to get to internet and download / upgrade to 10.6.8. I assume I can probably buy the upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8 from there.
Problem is this, Airport will not stop self-assigning IP address for my wireless connection, and unless I can get wireless back on this laptop, doesn't make a lot of sense to continue the rebuild and reinstall of all the software that was on it prior to HD failure. Only way to my home network and router is ethernet now. Everything else on my network (Apple MacBook Pro laptops, iPhones, desktops, and non-Apple printers and laptops) is hooking up to router wirelessly fine.
Any ideas how to resolve successfully so that the airport will stop self-assigning and allow the router to assign the IP address?When see the beachball cursor, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

properly), started displaying video anomalies (lines); testing
(TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3) indicates the video is failing.
The graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1600. Is this reasonably
replaceable? If so, is the "MPC ClientPro 434 All In One ATI MXM X1600
PCIe 128MB Video Card" I found on eBay (for $25, used) essentially the
same unit?
My soldering skills are, sadly, poor.
And it only dawned on me a couple days ago that because this iMac does
not have a Core 2 Duo processor, it will not be able to enter the
"Lion" generation.

Using new battery on old 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
I am in a remote location, under a deadling. My 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro battery cable finally went south. I'm in a studio with half a dozen brand new battery units ... for 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 MacBook Pro's.
Can I use the battery from a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 MacBook Pro on my older 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo???

BenAs I wrote above, there is no possibility of using one of the new batteries in your old machine: it absolutely won't fit. Furthermore, removing the battery from one of the new machines will void the warranty on that machine, so even if you could contrive a wiring harness to connect one of the new batteries externally to your MBP, there would be good reason not to do it.
And if you did, there is no way to predict how the charging system in your machine would respond to the incorrect battery. Would it be charged at all? Would it be charged only to the capacity of the battery specified for use in your computer, which is far lower than the capacity of the new battery? Would the SMC in your machine recognize the battery and distribute the power from it correctly? The answers to these and many other related questions are anybody's guess.
So the solution to your immediate problem will be to move your work onto one of the newer computers, finish it up by the deadline, and order a new battery for your own computer. -
Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. I've upgraded to snow leopard which seems to have knackered my .me or .mac account (whatever it's called now), so I don't seem to have any option but to upgrade to Lion if I every want to see my emails again.
Apple say I must have a Intel Core 2 processor for Lion to work...... at least I think that's what they say.

If you have a Core Duo model then you cannot upgrade to Lion. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Look for the Model ID in the displayed information. If you have a MacBookPro 2,1 or later then you have a Core 2 Duo model and can upgrade to Lion. -
