24" iMac Brightness Query

First of all, I must say that I am ecstatic with the arrival of my refurbed 24" iMac. It arrived in perfect condition and is working flawlessly. Whoever owned this previously must have taken very good care of it or not used it at all. Or it may have been a demo.
My question is this: Is there some app that will dim the monitor down further than is possible with the built-in monitor dimmer?
I have the monitor dimmed down as far as I can, but it is still too bright for my eyes. White backgrounds just seem to glare from the brightness. My old 17" PB seemed way too dim to me, but this new iMac is extremely bright for my eyes.
Thanks,
Phillip Anthony

Yes, Photoshop is very important to me, meaning that a correct monitor color profile is very important for all the obvious reasons.
When I selected Color I was surprised to see an 'Adobe RGB' auto setting. I chose this and the monitor got lighter yet. Not what need, but I left it as such.
We uprights, it seems, are never happy with what we have.
Just ran across this bit of info:
"The reason apple limits the brightness is because the lighting on a flat display such as that of an iMac or laptop is that if too little power is supplied to the light it will become damaged ... "
And this may be of some help as well and it's free to boot:

Thanks again.

I just noticed about 1 week ago, that my IMAC has gotten much brighter...
I did not change anything on the machine, now my hightlights seem to be washed out - ex - I cannot see the same detail in Google Maps.
I tried to Calibrte the Screen using the Calibration Tool, but not much change.
    Can anyone offer any advice?
    All comments appreciated.
    Thank you.

I searched the intenet FAR and wide to find something that would help.
I actually thought I had to service my machine...
I guess I inadvertantly hit the key combination that triggered that on the machine.
Anyway, thank you again for the assistance.
    Saved me much greif.

  • 21.5" iMac brightness problem under Windows 7

Even at lowest possible brightness under Windows 7,
this is much too bright for working in the evening/night.
I was using VistaShades under Vista, but now under Windows 7
    VistaShades only darkens the background!
Does anyone know another program for reducing the brightness
    which is Windows 7 compatible?
    Thanks!
(BTW: I have the same problem using my 24" iMac under Windows 7
    see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2358779&tstart=0)

I has the same problem so i called a friend and all he did was go to navida's web site and download the beta drivers for gforce go 7600. make sure it is for windows 7. the ones on HP's website does not work and you can not use auto detect drivers when finding the driver.

  • New iMac brightness level keeps changing (auto adjust NOT checked)

Just got a new 27 inch iMac and keep on having to change the brightness level back to the brightness I prefer.
I do not have auto adjust checked, I put the brightness slider up to the level I like and after a while the brightness dims to what seems like the default level as its always down to the same spot on the slider...what gives? i just want it to stay where I want it...
    Help.

I have same problem, of autobrightness being unchecked and my brightness going from full to about 3/4 bright
all by itself. I had that problem, then flickering of my screen also was taking place. I didn't bring my unit into Apple
because this autobrightness thing plus flickering would not happen on command,, and I wouldn't be able to show them properly. Well , finally my left side of the screen dimmed,, and that was the go ahead to bring it in to them
to show the left side of screen. I also told them about the flickering,, and the autobrightness, which I figured played a role into the final left side dimming. They replaced the backlight and the display LCD on warranty.
I have had it for about 5 days. The screen is equally lit (as should be), however, I discovered that my same old
problem of autobrightness, is slipping back to 3/4.  So most of you have autobrightness problem in a sort of different way. I set mine to "torch" because my downstairs bedroom is dim (with one overhead light), but sometimes, just plain dark,, so I want to sometimes keep it at torch,, however, it still slips back. You would
almost think that if my surronding was dim or dark, that it would stay on torch if the autobrightness was really working properly. Go figure. I just tried SMC a short while ago,, I had tried, before my repair doing PRAM and the other one (I think VRAM).  I also will unhook my second monitor to see if that is having an impact on things.
Do any of you in this post have a second monitor attached,, and have you tried unhooking it to see if the problem
    is resolved?

  • IMac Brightness forgets setting after shut down

Hi, I have an old iMac (not sure what year but it's the white model 24").
Everytime I log in, the brightness setting is always at the lowest setting. At the minute I'm having to change it everytime I go on my mac.
The iMac is running OS X 10.5.8 if that helps at all?
Please help, I've searched for the issue have found nothing so far

Someone had posted this link on another thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=881&start=135
So I'm going to try that when I get home. Having Googled and searched these forums it seems I'm not the only one with fan problems, although there seem to be lots of varying issues. I'm now aware that shutting down my computer every night is not necessarily a good thing, but some threads I've read say that the diagnostics that Macs perform in the wee small hours don't get done if the computer is sleeping, either. So what is best? Just leave it turned on? I worry about leaving non-essential electric appliances on all night.
Any help would still be appreciated! Thanks.

  • Imac brightness control is stuck at half

The brightness control on my brand new iMac 27" appears to be "stuck" at half-way.  The display is not very bright and I'd like to increase it, but when I press the F2 brightness key, it will go down, but not up past half-way.  Is this a retina display thing or indicative of some problem.  It does appear dark and I'd like to brighten it up some.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, turn off auto-brightness. Open System Preferences > Displays, untick "Automatically adjust brightness" and set up the brightness with F1 and F2 keys

  • 24in iMac brighter than 20in?

Greetings. I will be purchasing a new iMac after the Leopard release. I would rather the economics of a 20 inch rather than the 24, but in store displays with them side by side, seem to show the 24 with a much brighter screen (settings were the same on both). I really dont want to sacrifice what appears to be a brighter screen by purchasing the 20in if the 24in is in fact a better display. Would appreciate any comments on this. Thanks.

Thanks for the input Jeffrey and your point about not having a side by side comparison at hopme is well taken. However,I wonder if anyone can tell me if there is a different display program in the 24 (23) than the 20 that would account for the difference? ('display program' may not be the correct terminology but as close as I can come!). I have noticed the variance in brightness in a couple different sales outlets and as I said, I did check to see both displays were set up identically. Thanks again and any others that would like to comment would also be appreciated. Cheers.

  • New 27" iMac Brightness Control Missing

I have a brand new 27" iMac. Currently the only things plugged into it are the Apple-branded wireless keyboard and mouse that were included with the iMac and ethernet. I waited for the 10.9.2 update to see if that would resolve the issue, but it has not. I have also performed multiple PRAM and NVRAM resets.
The F1 and F2 keys on the Apple-branded keyboard do not decrease or increase the brightness of the internal display. In System preferences -> Display, there is no brightness slider at all. It is behaving as if I plugged in a generic 3rd party display.
I am about to copy over the
    AppleBackligt.kext
    AppleBacklightExpert.kext
    AppleUSBDisplays.kext
from an identical 27" iMac (that doesn't have this issue) to see if that will resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, a complete reinstall of Mavericks is not an option at this time.
Thank you in advance for all your help and suggestions.
    Edit: fixed title typo

It is currently unavaible for reinstall, due to the time (albeit short) required. If I can't fix this another way, that's the route I'd like to take. I'm just hoping I can find a more direct solution, and to find out if this issue is just this machine or broader.
The steps I plan on taking right now are,
Verify the display is properly set up by Apple (maybe the internal USB isn't plugged in right?)
Replace .kext files listed above from an identical iMac with working brightness.
Dump any preferences related to the display I can find.
    Reset NV/PRAM again.
    Reinstall the OS.
    Replace.

  • Windows iPod Photo Transfer to new iMac G5 Query

    Hi,
I have a 40 GB iPod Photo that is fortmated for use with a PC using Windows Pro.
I have over 28 GB data or tracks on it, and i now wish to use it with my new iMac G5 that I have just purchased.
The thing is I dont know how to go about doing this, because I am concerned that if I copnnect it to my iMac G5, iTunes will remove all of the music that is already on my iPod, and I cannot have that happen, as It would take me forever to copy them to CDrom and then timport them into the iMac, I gues it would probably take me all of the Christmas and new year that way, and I have no idea if that would work poperly anyway.
Can anyone advise me how I can achieve my move over to the Apple computer please, without loosing my music. Once this is done I will not be wanting to connect it to my PC again. My iPod Photo is also set to 'Disc Mode' in iTunes so that I can see it as a drive in Windows if this is of any help.
Hope someone here can help or advise me.
    Thanks In Advance
    Drusus

    Nick,
As far as the Maxtor drive is concerned, I have kept it formatted as a NTFS Windows drive because OS X can read it without any problems at all, and apparently, according to Maxtor's web-site, if I format it as a Mac drive then it will not be recognised by the Windows system, and that I would have to partition it above 32MB!
So, I have purchased a Belkin Wireless Cable Router (it works with ADSL as well) for about 40 UK pounds. This I have connected to my Win XP machine with an Ethernet cable, and I now access both my 10MB Broadband cable connection and my Win XP machine on the iMac via the Airport Extreme wireless connection.
It was extremely (forgive the pun) easy to set-up, and took about 40 minutes from start to finish and that's only because the Windows machine crashed once, but after that it was just fine.
If you can, I would consider going for the Ethernet/Router way because it gives you access to both machines and Internet connections as well as printer and scanner sharing.
So if you wan't to know anything else, just let me know and I will do my best to explain.
Hope you had a good Christmas and Happy New year!

Does the late 2013 iMac support outputting to monitors which have an ultra-wide aspect ratio of 21:9?

Hi, tough to tell, but they do run extensive tests after any replacement, so I think I'd be happy about the free extra replacement.
If under warrantee, they should replace any defect they find, not just one thing.

  • Imac reseller query

Hi, my imac got recalled because of the 1tb seagate HD issue. I think the reseller has dropped the imac or something as they told me there was a "pixel" problem with the screen and they have replaced it free of charge, without contacting me. Is this normal ?
Should I accept the machine back ?   I am concerned if it was dropped maybe there is damage/degrading inside ?

  • Make Display Sleep Manually. Any Button/Shortcut Key?

Hi, I am having problem in making the display sleep automatically. The sleep setting does not seem to work very well.
Is there any shortcut keys to make the display sleep manually while the mac is working in the background? I just want the display to sleep not the hard drive.

Unfortunately the internal imac brightness control won´t turn the display into a completely dark screen, but there´s a nice freeware tool called "brightness control" which might help you....it does not turn the screen of, but it comes pretty close to that....
