24" iMac screen starts to leave shadow

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/machilus/4671862089/sizes/l/. This started to happen like a month ago. The screen seems to disfunction and can't display what I have done with the mouse. Is it possible the LCD is dying or the graphic card is out of order? Does fixing this problem cost a lot?

HI,
Run the Apple Hardware Test
Could be the graphics card.

It's possible you have a bad RAM chip, try running Apple Hardware Test on your system.

  • IMAC Screen Colors "Wrong"

Quite suddenly, my 2007 IMAC screen started displaying "toothpaste green" instead of white and the background colors have a lot of red in place of what?  Seems that the overall palette might be off.  I tried the calibration routine, but didn't change back to anything like it was.  The Log-on screen seems the same as it ever was, just after I log on are the colors all wrong.  This is true for the other two users on the machine as well.  Help!?

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on the Seeing tab, turn off White on Black, and drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left.

  • IMac screen on start up flickers

On start up the top half of my screen flickers for about 5 minutes and then goes to normal. Is there a setting to correct this or should I be looking at replacing the video card. I am running OS X.4 and it is the Summer 2001 DV 500 mhz processor. If I need to replace it I have an ATI MX4000 (AGP) with 128 meg and wanted to know if this would work. Also is there a reset function for the video card?
    Message was edited by: SnkEys990

There is no physical video +card in a slot+ in the iMac, so you cannot replace it. The video chips are on the motherboard. The problem is probably not in those components anyway. If there is a video problem, it is more likely to be in the analog video board that controls the CRT. These iMacs are CRT monitors and computers rolled into one package, and the CRT-video portion is often the part that fails, not the computer-video portion.
Here's something to check... Although the CRT of iMacs degauss when the iMac is started or restarted, this document
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25339
says you should leave the iMac off for an extended period if it is continuously turned on.

  • Black screen instead of TTYs after Xorg once started and leaved

    Hi,
I've installed Arch on my laptop and experience following issue... I log in after boot and run "startx", then openbox starts properly. This is fine, but when I leave X, I can't see anything (TTY expected). I can switch to another TTY, login as root and type "reboot" or type "killall X", then log in as regular user and type "startx" to get openbox again. So there are TTYs obviously but I can't see anything but black screen.
By leaving X (above) I mean...
    - typing "sudo killal X" in xterm
    - using openbox "Log Out" menu option
    - switching to another TTY by hitting Alt+Fn
All of these lead to the same issue.
I assume it's not Xorg problem, but I may be wrong of course. Is that driver related? I have Nvidia card and use proprietary drivers installed via pacman. Can anybody give me an advice where to look? Thanks a lot. I also attach (maybe relevant) outputs. If there is anything else needed to know please tell me and I'll post it.

I was having this exact same problem, then it just stopped. I am using the nouveau driver and I have a tnt2 card.
IIRC, I was having an unrelated problem with xorg or udev or something was having problems detecting my monitor, it claimed I had two monitors connected, I wrote an xorg.conf file and that fixed the problem. IDK if its is related or not because I don't recall exactly when things started working when I would switch ttys.
Try using the nouveau driver and see if it does the same thing, it has a kernel module so it might make difference,

    Hi...
My name is Turgay and have been using computer since 1982... 2 years ago, because of my friend's advice, i bought an iMac... It was the first Mac that i use... Till that, i was using normal PC's...
I bought an 24" iMac on July 2009 and started to use... I realized that i spent my 27 years for using (fixing) computers. Because the Mac was perfect. After iMac, i was really fine with my computer... But after something, that doesn't bother me, happened. The screen started to get cloudy and black... And it increased. Because of this i took my iMac to your authorised distributor http://www.bilkom.com.tr...
They changed my screen but in 2 months it happened 3 times and i wanted them to change my iMac with new one, under customer laws... In our country, the device must be changed with new one if the same problem occurs in 3 months. Because i know the customer satisfaction of Apple, i didn' worry about it but Bilkom refused my will... I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...
Waiting for your reply... Thanks and regards...

Unfortunately, you are not communicating with Apple here - we are all other users volunteering our time to help with technical problems.
Here is a list of Apple contacts; there is no email address  - you will need to write a letter to their corporate headquarters or call them:

Although, it appears that your problem is with a third party store and that you have won in court - did you get your money back? 24" iMacs have not been made since 2009 or 2010. Now there are 21" and 27" iMacs.

How much free space do you have on your hard disk? And have you ever performed a backup & clean install after an OS X upgrade?

  • When start IMac screen is white with no spiral and no apple logo

Why is my  Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8 IMac screen all white when I turn it on?  There is no spiral and no Apple logo and the desktop does not appear.  The screen is just white.
Prior to this, we had a wind storm in our area with some power glitches today.  After one of them, the dock items disappeared and just the wallpaper was there. The colored spinner began going around when I clicked on the mouse but nothing was happening.   I unplugged it to try to reset it, but now the screen comes up all white, there's no apple logo that appears at start up and that's it.  Now what should I do?

    Hello kathy15945,
The article linked below details a number of troubleshooting steps that can help restore your Mac's ability to successfully boot.

  • My iMac screen keeps showing pixels of previously opened documents and Safari tabs and hour or two after closing them. The shadow of those opened documents are still there hours later after shutting down and restarting my computer. What is happening

My iMac screen keeps showing pixels of previously opened documents and Safari tabs and hour or two after closing them.
Even when I swipe to the dashboard the outlines are still there when I know they should not be.
The shadow of those opened documents are still there hours later after shutting down and restarting my computer.
What is happening and what shall I do? Thanks in advance.

Not much to go on in your product info, but maybe this will help: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program. If not, then it's time to visit an Apple repair station.

  • IMac 24' starts up with Pixelated screen and hangs.

Lately ive been facing problems with my iMac (2009 early model, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb DDR3 RAM). Mostly its during start up. iMac has pixelated screen and the loading wheel also hangs and sometimes the screen also starts blinking. I need to long hold the startup button at the back to reboot, which sometimes works in one reboot and sometimes it takes 3,4 or may be more. Also after starting up, the pop up shows, that computer was not shut down properly. After starting up, iMac has started freexing and pixels start appearing and screen freezes (scheck creenshot below), but I've noticed that even after freezing, I've had the internet on my phone working perfectly fine, which runs via the iMac's wifi sharing.
Can someone please help me solve this issue. The motherboard has been recently replaced due to other problems i was having. What could be causing the start problems ? IS my hard drive crashing or what?
    Plese help.

That looks more like a problem with the GPU. You should run the Apple Hardware Test http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342

  • I can't get beyond a white screen starting my imac

This happened many months ago but my imac
evetnually started. Today I have tried several times
to start my imac and can't get beyond the white screen.
I get the mac sound at when it is trying to start up but then freezes
    at the white screen.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank.

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. If your startup volume is encrypted with FileVault, you’ll have to unlock it in Disk Utility before you can do anything with it.

My IMac , just started, taking a long time to get to the desktop.  First I have a gray screen, than a gray screen with a gray globe, a blue screen and finally my desktop.  Takes about 4 minutes.  What is wrong and what do I do?

Once the desktop is up and the iMac ready to use, open Systeem Preferences (Apple menu) and click the Startup Disk item. In the new screen, make sure that OS X on your hard drive is selected in the top row - click it once to make sure. Then test.
