24-inch Cinema Display and Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - Cinema Display still flickers after updates
I currently have a 15-inch Macbook Pro (mid 2010) hooked up to my 24-inch Cinema Display. I have updated all the firmware for both the Cinema Display and the Macbook Pro but still get intermittent flickering. Moreover, I have cleared the PRAM and VRAM. I have done ever possible update I can find, the system is fully functioning. Help?
I am having this exact same problem. 2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB. I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter. The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro battery will not charge after plugging in firewire cable shut down computer
I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook pro with Lion installed.
I was running off battery, and I went to plug in a firewire cable, not plugged into anything, and when I inserted it, the computer shut off.
The computer would not turn on again without being plugged into the AC adaptor. The magsafe charger shows green, but the computer says not charging. The battery is showing 57%, but the indicator lights will only light up when AC charger is connected..
I have let it sit off, and plugged in for a couple hours, and nothing chages, and let it sit overnight not plugged in, but nothing.
I have read other forums about the same issue,, it seems like its a common issue, and some have said what it could be, but no one said what it IS.
I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, but to no avail.
When i plug in the AC adaptor, the computer immediately turns on (which I find kond of funny), and I am able to turn it off normally, and it will stay off, and I can also turn it on if the charger has been connected from pervious.

Mid-2010 macbook pro mini display port to hdmi works only intermittently
I have a 13-inch mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10.2. HDMI out from mini displayport to my Dynex TV only intermittently works. The times that I have gotten it to work involves a combination of restarting the computer, unplugging the TV and plugging it back in, then plugging in the MDP adapter. Now when I plug it in, the MacBook screen flashes black like it is trying to detect the external display, but no picture on the TV. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is the console log output when I plug in the adapter:

I took my laptop to my local Apple store to have the problem diagnosed and they told me the problem lies in the grpahics card which will require the replacement of the entire logic board at a cost to me of $340.
after that I did some research on the topic and found that this was a massive problem on this model of macbook pro and Apple never issued a recall to fix the issue, are there any class action suits in this category currently underway? if so how can I join?I also have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15". Also, I had paid $100 for Apple Developer account and I can't even use Xcode or Unity3D to work on my game because the moment I write a line of code, my computer crashes. Scratch that, I used to have an Apple Developer account (I let it expire a couple of weeks ago). It hasn't been of much use since my Macbook Pro crashes 15 times a day.\
A month after buying a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" directly from Apple, it began to crash. At first, I assumed it was my fault as I had been messing around with Bootcamp and doing other heavy stuff, but I quickly learned it would randomly decide to shutdown regardless of the task at hand. I was very busy at the time. I was a fledgling teacher in France, and I hardly had any time, or money, to put toward a 84 euro train ticket to Paris. Also, OS X updates were around the corner (Lion, Mountain Lion), so I held out, hoping the issue would be resolved with the updates.
During my investigation of the issue, I did find the TS4088 article. It recommended I install some updates, and then it described a problem that seemed similar to my own, but the order in which the problems occured, as described in the TS4088 article, did not follow the same pattern that my computer had been experiencing–there was no gray or black screen after the restart warning message when my mac crashed. The first time I found TS4088 on Apple's Support page (at a time when their product recalls were easier to locate before they redesigned their website), it was a couple of months after I had bought the computer. I reasoned that my Macbook Pro must not be suffering from the same issues as I had never seen the video freeze or go black before seeing a restart message. The restart warning message is the last thing I saw, no loss of video or black(or gray) screen afterwards. My computer would simply start to boot up again.
About two years after buying the computer, and suffering from about 3 GPU panics a day, I searched for the TS4088 article again, wondering if I had misread it, and that maybe the issues described in the article were the same issues I was experiencing. This time I could not find the TS4088 article on Apple's Website. I searched over and over again, but it was nowhere to be found. I assumed that issue had been resolved and the article removed. Now after three years of using a faulty, unreliable computer, I was feeling like a schmuck. I searched again on Apple's website to find the TS4088 article, or any new ones that outlined my very apparent GPU issues, but I had no luck. I circled Apple's website over and over and could not find that article. It was only through a link other frustrated mid-2010 Macbook Pro owners had posted on some other website that I found the link to TS4088, also learning that the forum's users were experiencing my same problems.
Based on the language Apple used to describe the problem, I did not reason that I was suffering the same issue. Here's what happens when my computer crashes:
• The computer seems to shut down. The display turns off, the fans stop spinning
• The message "Your computer was restarted because of a problem . . . Press any key to restart" is displayed.
• I press any key, the computer restarts, I wait for next crash to interrupt my work
Excerpt from TS4088
"Symptoms
Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray."
My computer never displays a restart message before the video is lost or display turns black. My Macbook Pro mid 2010 loses the picture on the display, and less than a second after that is the restart warning displayed. The video would never freeze or stop playing, rather the whole computer just dumped all of its processes and displayed a warning message asking me to press any key to restart.
My issues with this problem are the following:
•The problems described in TS4088 do not accurately reflect what users are experiencing. TS4088 is misleading in this respect.
•The article TS4088 was not easy to find on Apple's website. It seemed to have moved to an obscure, impossible-to-find location that could only be found thanks to the great number of other Mac users who are experiencing the same problem.
This issue hasn't been managed dutifully. I'm annoyed to have sunk money into a developer account. I'm annoyed that I sunk money into an expensive product that does not work. I'm annoyed that the description of the issue afflicting mid 2010 Macbook Pros was inaccurately and misleadingly described and that links to the TS4088 article disappeared from Apple's website when I could have truly benefitted from them. I am especially annoyed that my life in graphic design, web development, and iOS development has stagnated for several months as my computer crashes some 15 times a day. I am, however, pleased with the speed at which a Mac can boot up. -
Hi all... My mid 2010 MacBook Pro took a keyboard spill. It still works but the display is very very dark. A faint image can only be seen at an angle in very bright light. I think this model has an LED screen. Can anyone please tell me what the fix for this is? Thank you sooooo much!

Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components). -
How do I get my new 27" Thunderbolt Display to work with my mid-2010 Macbook Pro?
How do I get my new 27" Thunderbolt Display to work with my mid-2010 Macbook Pro? Or am I SOL?
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B0F
SMC Version (system): 1.57f18You can't. Theoretically, Thunderbolt devices that only transfer video and audio should work with Mini DisplayPort MacBooks like yours, but it's not the case of the Thunderbolt Display. Its firmware doesn't allow it to be used with non-Thunderbolt Macs, so you can't use the Thunderbolt Display with the Mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Instead, you have to look for another screen, or you can get an adapter and connect the MacBook Pro to a TV -
Why can't I use my mid 2010 macbook pro with 8GB memoir and NVIDIA GEForce GT 330M 256MB to run 3D in photoshop CC?
3-D is very memory intensive.
System requirements | Photoshop
Mac OS
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
3.2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 512 MB of VRAM (1 GB recommended)**
OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Internet connection and registration are necessary for required software activation, membership validation, and access to online services.*
** 3D features are disabled and some Mercury Graphics Engine enhanced features may not work with less than 512 MB VRAM. Read the Help article.
Bottom line, you don't have enough VRAM

My 15-inch, Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps restarting
Sorry if this has been asked here before but I've been having lots of trouble with my Macbook Pro lately and I'm not sure what to do. It keeps restarting all the time and I've noticed that it mostly occurs while I'm using the Type Tool in Photoshop. Which is very upsetting because I use that program a lot and I'm not sure what to do about this. The problem started earlier this year and has since gotten significantly worse, especially after upgrading to "Mavericks" OS X 10.9.4".
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
And here's the report that I received on the latest restart:

Any help would be greatly appreciated!Thank you so much for the reply!!! This really means a lot! I'm not familiar with that software and admittedly, I'm not all that tech savvy.
If I download this, does this mean I can use Photoshop again (Albeit temporarily)? And will disabling the GPU have any negative effects on my computer?
And I've also seen that a few other people have had similar problems with their "Mid-2010 Macbook Pro's" - is this because of a faulty hardware problem? And is the solution to have it replaced?
Sorry for all the questions by the way. Like I said, I'm not all that tech savvy but I really want to fix this and start using my computer like I used to before. Also, I live in the Territories in Canada and have no access to any Apple Stores so I can't really book a Genuis Bar appointment until my next holiday, which, sadly, won't be for quite awhile.
Again- thank you so much for the reply!!! : ) -
Hi, as the title reads my year old mid 2010 Macbook pro keeps powering off and leaving the below error message.
I'm a university student and desperately need my mac to hit deadlines etc. If anyone could suggest a solution or shed any light i'd be hugely appreciative. Thanks SO much. Joe

It looks like your NVIDIA graphic is damaged. If you need your computer now, you can fix the computer downloading gfxCardStatus and selecting the option to use only the integrated graphic, so that kernel panic won't appear anymore. Note that you won't be able to use the NVIDIA graphic, so the graphic performance may be worse than with this graphic.
Of course, that's a temporary fix, because you should take the computer to an Apple Store as soon as possible to get the Mac repaired. As the NVIDIA graphic is not soldered, the repair won't be expensive -
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro and Intel 530 SSD
Hey everyone,
Does anyone have any information regarding upgrading my mid-2010 MacBook Pro i5 running Mavericks with an Intel 530 250GB SSD? I have read some stories of people not being able to boot etc when running Lion with the 510/520 series. If it is not compatible, any suggestions of a similar SSD from another manufacturer?
Thank you all in advance and Happy Thanksgiving!@Clinton, thanks, I like this machine as well.
FWIW, I got the SSD with the "Data Doubler" from Macsales. For those who do not know this is a metal frame that allows a standard size 2.5" disk or SSD to be used in place of the optical drive, which in my case no longer was able to read many media disks anyway.
I setup the SSD in the old optical bay and left my 1TB Toshiba hard drive in the hard drive bay. I did this because I have some long ago memory of reading somewhere, perhaps in error, that the sudden motion sensor won't signal a hard drive in the optical bay in the case of an event.
The SSD is my boot device and main device while the hard drive is my media drive, movies, music, as well as the virtual Windows drive using Parallels. As a development machine this SSD has put new life into the old girl and saved me quite a nice chunck of change over getting a new machine.
One note; for my machine OWC recommends getting the 3G (SATA II) drive rather than a 6G (SATA III) as due to some quirk an OWC 6G drive will fall back to 1.5G speeds rather than 3G. Here is their list of machines:

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel
Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
Thanks for reading!Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

I hope this is not too much text and I hope it makes some sense. The problem happened while I was closing a tab on Chrome, which wasn't anything sketchy, just Facebook, and nothing too unmanagable (it was the only application active). Thanks for your help! -
My mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15 inch unibody battery will not accept a charge
HI there one and all!
My mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" unibody laptop will not accept a normal charge using the mag safe cord. I have replaced the original battery with a factory new replacement, but I still have the same results.
The computer powers up and runs only with the mag safe cord attached and when shut down, does not switch from green to orange to indicate the charging mode.
Can anyone be of assistance or perhaps has had a similar issue? Thanks in advance to anyone for their insight and help. If it makes a difference, my computer information is as follows: MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2010
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory. 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics. Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
Serial number. W80---------------
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)Please find "System Information" in this folder path---Applications > Utilities---and launch it. When it opens, find "Power" in the left-hand contents pane and click it to get something like this in teh main pane:
Copy everything in the "Battery Information" and copy/paste it here. The number values in that report may help us diagnose what is happening.
Also, did you buy this battery directly from Apple or from another source. There are an increasing number of reports showing up that suggests some counterfeit batteries being sold. -

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro? Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you? If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose. -
Stage3D and a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro
So, I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running Lion. It has a GeForce GT 330M. According to everything I can find online, my computer should support Stage3D. However, when I try and use an application that calls for it, I get errors about an unsupported graphics card. When I go to the Stage3D unsupported chipset page, it says that my GPU does not support Stage3D in Baseline or Constrained profile.
I found a guy who did some testing of Stage3D vs. WebGL, and he used the same chipset I am using to run the tests.
Is it a driver issue that was fixed in Snow Leopard/Mavericks? Or is my chipset actually unsupported? I would think that a three-year-old graphics card should still work. I appreciate any help that anyone can give.
Complete system specs:
MacBook Pro, Mid 2010
2.4 GHz i5
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256MB
Mac OS X 10.7.5
Flash Version: 11.9.900.152I'd personally trust the assessor window more than the list. It uses javascript to render Stage 3D animation via your GPU, so if it doesn't support it, it won't show the 3D animation.
Since 2004 Apple has been notorious for releasing "mid year" and "late year" models that have minor changes, but are still called the same year model. Sometimes, those changes are for the better, sometimes not.
I had a 2004 G5 iMac that was a 1.8gHz 20". It was made in June. The models made in December 2004 had iSight cams built in and a different GPU, but they were still called 2004 iMacs. Better systems for nearly $600 less. I had a late 2009 MacBook Pro that had a better GPU (512mb VRAM) than my neighbor's early 2009 MBP (256mb VRAM). I'd suspect that the people with 2010 Minis who CAN run Stage 3D have later models, with a different GPU, or some other "minor change" made by Apple that allows it.
Regardless of what it is, unfortunately Flash Player and Stage 3D can't upgrade hardware.
