27" I7 iMac will not recognize thumb drive

I have a PNY 8gb Attache thumb drive that is not recognized by my 2010 27" I7 iMac.    It does not show on the desktop, disk utility, finder or system profile. However, this thumb drive works on my MacBook, 2006 24" iMac and a Dell laptop running XP.   I have 4 other drives (1-4gb) that work on all of our computers. Currently running Lion @ 10.7.3 but this problem existed on SL @ 10.6.8 also.   I have tried this drive as a FAT-32 and Mac OS journaled and the 27" still will not recogize the drive.    Any thoughts?    Thank you.
Forgot to mention - called Applecare but they couldn't help.

Try doing a SMC reset, that might help. Otherwise I'd try another thumb drive.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down" and restart while holding down the mouse button. Anyone have any remedies?

I ran into a similar (identical?) problem.  I inserted a DVD-R and my imac would not recognize it.  The only way to eject was to do a restart.  I tried some of the SMC reset stuff.  That didn't work.  I came across another thread on macrumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336501)
    that solved my problem.
I have an external Western Digital Passport drive that I use for timecapsule.  It turns out
there are two files that WD adds to the /Library/LaunchDaemons that interferes with the
SuperDrive.  I removed the WD files from the LaunchDaemons directory and everything works fine
now.  Again, refer to the macrumors thread for more details.
The files I removed from the LaunchDaemons directory were:
    com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist
    com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist
..yes I had installed the WD backup software to see if I liked it....I did not, but didn't realize this files would cause a conflict with the SuperDrive.

If your on 10.6.8 like you should be for security/stability updates, somewhere along the line a later Bootcamp version was issued and only supports Win 7.

  • IMac will not boot, hard drive file problem? Can't install OS in 2nd part.

The iMac will not boot. The Apple displays on the screen, the cursor spins for awhile, and then it loops into a reboot effort.
Last night, I was doing a lot of custom file sharing settings using the include enclosed folders option at the bottom of the Get Info window.
Question 1: Could that file sharing process have messed things up?
In an effort to get things going........ A few weeks back, I used Disk Utility to create a 2nd partition, with the intent of installing Ubuntu Linux there. I never attempted the install, as far as I can remember, while playing with the Ubuntu Live CD. So, I thought I would install 10.5.6 from the CD in the 2nd partition. But I get an error message that says "The installer could not create the folder "/Volumes/Ubuntu 9.10/BaseSystem.pkg.161nDNDdQ.""
Question 2: I also shared that partition, could that have caused the OS install failure?
Question 3: If I understand the book correctly, I can try to install the OS from the CD on the 1st partition, and not lose my data, correct? Unfortunately, I don't have any backup for the data, as I don't own any drives large enough yet to accommodate the data on the drive.
Question 4: Anyone have any other thoughts as to what ent wrong?

    Hi, Grant.
Sometimes, it just pays to think on a problem. I awoke thinking, if it will boot the OS X install CD, it ought to boot my Ubuntu Live CD. And then, maybe I can change permissions on the first partition. As soon as I thought that, it occurred to me, if the problems are with the permissions, what if I used the OS X disk, and erased (formatted) the Ubuntu partition. That should set all the permissions on that partition back to default. Would OS X install then to the Ubuntu partition?
You better believe it did!! I'm typing this from the Mac after updating my 10.5.6 to 10.5.8 in the 2nd partition, and I'm booting from the 2nd partition.
I then did as you suggested, and from the Mac, I repaired the permissions to the first partition. But, the result was the same, there are a few permissions that do not match, and Disk Utility cannot, does not, or will not correct them.
I'm currently downloading the 10.5.8 combo update .dmg file. My thought is to burn that to a disk, and then install it over the version in partition 1. And trust that the current installation on partition 1 does not have any cross linked files that will destroy some data.
I do have some old ATA IDE drives I can hook externally to the Mac, and copy some of the information I have from the Mac to those drives before doing the 10.5.8 install.
Can you think of a better solution?

  • All of sudden the airport utility on the iMac will not recognize wireless devices that have on network for ever

Airport Utility will not recognize any of the devices on the network - mix of Time Capsule, Airport Extreme, and Airport Express.  The network works fine.  If you use the Airport Utility on iphone you can see and configure all the devices.  Any clues?

AirPort Utility version 6.0 is rather limited in its abilities. I suggest you download and install the more useful version 5.6 (for Lion): AirPort Utility 5.6
You can see both wired and wireless clients in Advanced > Logs and Statistics.
AirPort Utility 6.0 cannot be deleted but it will coexist with AirPort Utility 5.6.
Use 6.0 when you want pretty pictures. Use 5.6 when you actually want to do something.

  • Will not recognize jump drive nor allow me to open DVD tray

Intermittantly, my G5 will not show my jump drive nor a CD on the desktop. At those times, it will not open the DVD tray either.
When this happens, I can go to system profiler and see both the jump drive and the CD--it's just not showing up on the desktop so I can't open them. The only way I can get the tray to open and to recognize the CD and or Jump Drive is to reboot the computer.
What is going on and why don't these show up on the desktop nor allow me to open the DVD tray.

  • IMac will not recognize scan function of all in one printer

My 24" iMac will print on the HP Photosmart 3210xi All in One, but will not scan.
Twice, (to ensure I didn't miss anything) I have run the manual un-install procedures prescribed from HP, and installed the appropriate driver for Mac with no success.
When I try to scan, the scanner wants to begin, but the computer displays the message, "Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. (Scanner not found.)" We have the correct driver (Not the Print only option).
This printer still works "full-up" on the clunker PC, so it's not a hardware issue with the printer.
Any others with similar all-in-one issues? Solutions?

I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8  connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:
    http://scsc-online.com
They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction  and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
    I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The  only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
Disk Warrior can be found at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the  damage has already been done.
    Let us know what happens.

  • IMac will not recognize scanner

My iMac 10.6.4 will not scan. I have an HP Deskjet F4280; it will print fine, but when I try to scan using HP scan pro, or Adobe Acrobat, or Photoshop, it says "An error occurred while communicating with the HP imaging device." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Adobe software, but nothing works. It started doing this with a previous HP printer--worked fine for several months, then just quit. Now it's doing the same with this new printer. But it prints fine.

This is really weird I have been using the same HP printer/scanner C3100 but suddenly it won't recognize or scan;however, it will print and make copies
Yes, I have updated all the drivers and nothing, I wouldn't try contacting HP they charge an outrageous hourly rate to answer a stupid question.
    Any suggestions

  • IMac does not recognize optical drive

I have an iMac that I purchased. I thought that the optical drive was bad, so I replaced it. But the new drive is having the same problems as the old. It will open when you press the eject button on the keyboard, so it is obviously communicating with the computer. But it will not mount the disk. I am trying to reinstall OS X, and when I try to boot from a CD or hold down option and try to select a startup drive, the optical drive does not read the disk. It just spits the disk out and starts up like normal. Any ideas of what I can do to fix this? Thanks!

I have this same problem when I start k3b.
I have installed cdrdao, cdrtools and dvd+rw-tools as dependencies for k3b, I have created burning group and set that settings on k3b "modify permissions", but something is not working as it's supposed, because any device is found:
    ll /dev | grep sr0
    or
    ll /dev | grep cdrom
and no results, so my assumption its that some daemon that should be listening for changes on devices is not working... I assume that could be something with HAL daemon ( that I already have tried and no success) or other...

I have read that the problem could be related to KDE (that's my desktop environment) - https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/24643
PS: my optical DVD drive is external
EDIT: I saw that this post is one year old, I'm trying to delete this post, but I can't!

  • DIsk Utility will not recognize my drive to erase.

    Hello,
I am trying to erase my hard drive to install a new OS. I will be installing either OS 8.6 onto the 12 GIG ATA internal hard drive - the original hard drive.
I am using an OS 10.1 installer CD.
(I thought that DIsk Utility would be a better hard drive formatting utility than OS 8's drive setup utility.)
I first started up from the OS 10.1 installer CD and it first takes me through a few basic questions about the language (I chose English) and then a licencing question and I clicked agree. When it asks me which volume I would like to choose, both of my hard drives are shown but they are greyed-out (dimmed). When I hover over them with the mouse pointer, a small message appears to the left that says something like:
"This hard drive is dimmed because the CD installs all the languages"
This doesn't seem to make any sense. I was booted form the CD.
Why can I not use this installer to erase my hard drive?
This is a retail version of OSX with a white label. It came with two disks: OS9 and 10.1. The symptoms described above happened with the 10.1 disk. Next I will try OS 9. However I would like to know why my DIsk Utility on the OS 10.1 CD didn't show my drive as available. Any suggestions why the hard dirves were grayed out?
    Thanks

    Thanks Lau for you comments.
I need to install os8 because I need to run some old apps and I am using my os 9 for another computer I have.
By the way, the HFS+ file system was suuported from OS 8.1 and after and so that is not an issue. Good idea though.
And so I am back at my original question. It would appear that my OS X install disk doesn't like my blue and white G3's internal 12 GIG ATA drive and so I cannot format it with OSX Disk Utility. I would like to know why but for now I will just use OS 9 or OS8 drive setup. And so I have two choices: OS9 drive setup or OS8.5 Drive setup. Does it matter which I use? In other words is one better than the other? I will be later installing OS 8.6 onto this drive - and maybe OS 9 in the far future. I will try OS9's drive setup first.
Yes, and so this is my most immediate question at this point:
is there a difference between OS8.5 drive setup and OS9's Drive setup? (in terms or formatting a drive to install OS 8, 9 or even X maybe one day?) I will be using HFS+.
And then my second question is my original question which is why doesn't my OS 10.1.5 Disk Utility select my 12 GIG ATA drive? (its greyed out - dimmed?)
    Thanks

  • Time Machine will not recognize hard drive

Time Machine tells me "You cannot open “Time Machine” preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time." My Lacie HD is on and mounted. I have erased it and repartitioned it and still get nothing. I get the would you like to set up TM prompt but then get the message above.

If you ever hear back from Lacie please post the result. I've given up on Time Machine for the time being. I've mostly given up on Leopard for the time being. I've partitioned my internal hard drive so I can boot in either Tiger or Leopard, and I figure I'll continue to work mostly in Tiger for the time being and apply updates to Leopard and maybe eventually it will work out. The other big problem I'm having with Leopard is the ability to repair permissions. Other than that, most programs seem to work well, although no big improvement over Tiger.
I am hugely disappointed and disillusioned. In June I became a convert from 20 years of Microsoft, and have been a huge Mac fanatic. My iMac was a gateway device to iPods and all things Mac. This experience brought me back to reality. I'll likely never go back MS, but the computer is just an appliance, and all things Apple are difinitely not "plug it in and it works". This is my worst experience with an upgrade ever.

  • IBook G4 will not recognize Super Drive

There is a DVD stuck in my optical Super Drive. The drive now is no longer recognized in the system profiler either. There is no noise at all coming from the drive on startup or when an eject is attempted. This is a second-hand iBook so unfortunately i don't have any other information as the disc was stuck in the drive on purchase.

If a problem occurs when Applecare is in effect, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the Applecare expires in the meantime. A product specialist at Apple told me this.
You need to contact Apple and tell them that the replacement of the hard drive did not solve the problem, and that the hard drive is still not being recognized. It's possible that the new hard drive is bad, but it's also possible that the hard drive cable was not securely plugged into the logic board and that it has worked loose. Or there could even be a logic board problem that is keeping the hard drive from being recognized. But it's Apple's problem to sort out.
    Good luck!

What Mac operating system are you running on your iMac?
    Are you certain they're compatible?
Have you checked with HP to see if there's a newer driver?

In addition, I haven't loaded on any software with my last 3 printers.  They just work without them, IMHO.
But a current driver would be necessary.
