2nd generation iMac G5 is suddenly pixellating

M 2nd generation iMac G5 is suddenly pixellating to the point of unreadabilty after being on for a couple hours. If I turn it off and let it sit for 10 or 20 minute sit starts ok again. My serial starts with YD531 . Is this likely to be capacitors and how hard is that to fix. I am used to soldering , but not electronics. The computer was worked on twice with power problems while under warranty.

Hey b'trout,
pixellating to the point of unreadabilty after being on for a couple hours. If I turn it off and let it sit for 10 or 20 minute sit starts ok again.
Now while this could be capacitors and is usually the first thing you think of in these machines. (Easy enough to check, just pull the back and look at the caps) If you're not sure what the problems look like:
http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
Now in your case I'm thinking that it has to do with temperature of the graphics chip. I just repaired my Power Mac G4 dual 1.2 MDD which was doing exactly what you describe. When I pulled the graphics card the chip to heatsink thermal past was dried out and brittle. Cleaning it up and reinstalling new paste fixed the problem.
Now the iMac is different in that there are thermal transfer pads that move the heat from the GPU (graphics processor unit) to the heat sink. The heat sink is of unusual design and my suspicions if you read through this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2559193&start=0&tstart=0
is that they fail. I know of no way to test them or tell if they are failing. My thoughts on possibilities are in that post.
The other thing that would help in a diagnosis would be if there was a temp sensor on the GPU, which there doesn't seem to be. (This iBook G4 I'm on has 5 sensors according to Temperature monitor. The iMac only two)
The only test that comes to mind is to run the iMac with the back off. Then you'd have to remove the upper plenum cover and blow cold air on the upper part os the plenum. If that prevents your failure you have a faulty heat pipe.
You can email me for more info.

I was wondering after just having purchased the iMac G5 only 6 months ago, will front row work with my computer or is Apple just trying to best itself every week or so? Can't find out where to get front row either, anybody able to help?

  • 30 frames per second on a 2nd generation iMac (333 MHz) - what codec?

I'm trying to make video play at full speed on my old iMac. So far, I haven't been successful but I haven't been using optimal source video, the tester video needed about every frame to be a key frame, and the result was anywhere from 1-15 fps.
I don't care about quality. I want it to look blocky. But I want it to fill the screen (800x600) and I want it to play at full speed. I can go as low as 18 fps but would love to keep it at or above 24.
I am currently testing it on a os x 10.3.9 with vlc or QuickTime pro. Quicktime seems to maintain the frame rate better, but I want the playlist function of vlc.
    1) what codec would you try? Again, compression artifacts don't bother me. That's actually the look I am going for. My best luck so far has been MPEG-1 with 640x480 and .5 Mbps bit rate. Sorenson, sorenson 3, and even cinepak, all at lowest quality didn't come as close as MPEG-1. I'm compressing a cinepak now with 256 colors, but that might be too limiting for some of my videos.
    2) In this instance, would it better to encode at 800x600, full screen size, or allow vlc to scale it up?
    3) would I see a dramatic performance boost if I ran this from Linux, like yellow dog? Since this is all I am using the computer for I suppose I could do this all from the command line, but I'd like to have a GUI at first while I get comfortable with vlc from the command line.
    4) do you think my limitations are more from the ram, processor, or video card? I'm happy to upgrade the ram and the video card, I just don't want to waste money on a computer that otherwise has no value to me.
Thanks for reading and I appreciate any help!

I actually tried photojpeg, thinking I could get around my keyframe issue, but it had the same result. I'm trying it with some new source footage, and I'll see if that one works.

  • IPod didn't want to restore but did on 2nd generation iMac

    If it's a repost sorry.
After having my iPod in a restart loop I got it into disc mode. But it still wouldn't mount, so I couldn't fix it. Then I walked over to my dad's old gray iMac DV and it fixed everything fine. His computer has exactly the same OS and iPod updater so I'm guessing my iMac is the problem.
I've read of other people fixing it by going to PCs and reformatting it and then going back to their mac and reformatting back, and I'm guessing it's the same issue.

Plug it in and try the restore again.

  • Can I set a 2nd Gen. iMac to work wirelessly without Airport?

I have a older G4 tower that has Airport on it, but my ancient 2nd Generation iMac does not have Airport on it, and obviously will not connect to the internet. Is it possible to run the older iMac wirelessly without Airport? Is there anything I can add to the iMac externally instead of having to open it up and add hardware?
I'm not that computer savvy, so the most basic straight forward method would be most helpful.
    Thanx!

You could use an Ethernet wireless adapter. Examples of Ethernet wireless adapters are the Linksys WET11, Linksys WET54G, and the Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP bridge.

  • Time Capsule fix needed (2nd Generation)

I have a 2nd generation Time Capsule that suddenly died.  I thought it was on the way out as lately I was getting warnings that it wanted to essentially start my backups from scratch!!
I took the hard drive out and tested it in my Drobo and the drive still works.  I believe its the power supply and need to know:
    A): Where to but one.
B):  If the same power supply that was in there is good enough for a 2-3 TB drive instead of the 1 TB.
    Thanks for any help,

Old name condensers although they still use that name in French and other languages.. we call them capacitors now.
They are dead.. the rust on the end is leaking electrolyte.
You need to replace with high capacity low esr types.. it is most important if you want to repair to buy the right ones.
And you need 4 caps not just two.. I pointed the post out in the other thread.

  • TS3989 How do I accept iCloud updated terms of service on Apple TV 2nd generation using only an iMac computer, since I have no other iOS devices?

I just updated my Apple TV 2nd generation, and upon completion it would no longer give access to Photo Stream. Instead I was told that I needed to accept the change in iCloud terms of service without letting me know how to do that on an iMac, since I don't have any other iOS devices. Where do I go to accept these terms of service changes, in order to continue to use Photo Stream. Is there an easy answer, or is this Apple's way of forcing me to buy products that I don't need?

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

  • Problems syncing iPod Touch (2nd generation) with iMac under Mountain Lion

When syncing my iPod Touch (2nd generation) with my iMac (under Mountain Lion) the entries in my diaries/agendas do not sync. Apps and music sync without a problem. What must I do?

I have this problem.. and after spending time at the Genius Bar yesterday, I discovered that my old ipod touch is obsolete..( the Ipod touch is a 32.bit system, while the newer operating system is 64... so they're simply not compatible.)
I expressed great dismay that my perfectly good ipod touch was now obsolete...  then the genius suggested I export my contacts and calendars to Google..
That was easy to do, and then, on the Google community forum i learned about nuevasync.com, which lets you synch all of this back to your ipod touch via Exchange.
    WOrked like a charm.
Nuevasync. com is free for an initial trial (10 days?) and then costs only 15$ per YEAR.. so I'll use this as a good work-around

  • My 2nd generation iPod Shuffle suddenly quit - Fix?

My 2nd generation iPod Shuffle suddenly quit on me just recently with no warning.
The lights indications say t has no music on it but connecting it to the computer shows the loaded tunes. I tried a full reset and reloaded the tunes but still no joy.
Further reading suggests either a dead logic board or a sick battery.
As a last resort I am wondering if anyone knows of a software approach before I get the tools out and start pulling it apart.

    I've found my own answer...
I was getting the green-orange-green-orange sequence of lights which all the info I had found to date said was the "No music" code. As I could see the MP3s on the iPod in iTunes I knew there was were MP3s on it.
Various knowledge seraches I did suggested adud battery or dead logic board - both terminal problems for this model unless you have spare parts ( which I do, courtesy of friends who have retired their Gen 2 iPods).
Then I found that under recent versions of iTunes (V 8 or later) it won't recognise podcasts or audio books as being present if you have the iPod set on shuffle.
I only ever listen to podcast and audio books on my Gen 2 AND had bumped the mode switch onto shuffle resulting in an apparently dead iPod. Put the  mode switch back to continuous and it's working again. Stupid !
I love Apple products  but I'm also a firm believer in the principle of "If it ain't broke don't fix it". All too often I seen Apple 'fix' something that wasn't broken over the 25 years I've been an Apple user.

  • HT1481 my ipod is 2nd generation and when i was listning songs, suddenly it stopped working and then it is neither started nor charged.

    dear sir,
My ipos model is 2nd generation 2gb ipod, when i was listning songs suddenly it turned off and when i tried to charge it, there was no responce from it and also my pc. please tell me what should i do ????????????

    i had already tried this
Sorry.  That was not apparent from your original post.
So you tried the reset mention above?  Is the Shuffle plugged into a USB port on your PC/Mac or via a wall adapter? Maybe let it sit for a day or two and then try the reset again.
Otherwise, it could be a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to take or send the device in for service/repair/replacement.

  • Macbook pro and Imac wont both sync to apple tv 2nd generation.

I have an iMac currently syned with my 2nd generation apple tv. I also had my new macbook pro synced to the apple tv. Recently I removed the apple tv from iTunes on my macbook pro. I would like to get it back, but it will not show in my itunes preferences. Do you know how I can restore the apple tv option into the preferences in itunes?
I have tried resetting everything on my apple tv.

You can re-download SD content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer, uncheck the preference to download HD in the bottom right corner.

  • Ipad 2  and ipod 2nd generation is not recognized by itunes 10.5

I have windows 7 64 bit and ipad 2 (ios 5.0) and 2nd generation ipod v 4.3.  Neither of these are recognized by itunes when I plug them via usb.  I have 2 usb on the front left side and 2 on the right side back.
I have tried rebooting my laptop and ipad 2 several times as well as shutting down avast antivirus, comodo firewall and spyware sweeper it did not work.  Then of all of sudden whether the antivirus or firewall is shutdown or not itunes recognized ipad 2.
I can connect via wifi using a dlink and going through mozilla firefox to load any files on my ipad 2.
This did not happen before 4.3 it seems it started happening in the last two updates of ios.
I have tried another laptop and it is the same.
I notice  that for the computer to recongize the ipad 2 two beeps must be heard before it is recognized but itunes does not.
    What do you recommend?
What do you mean by a periodic defect.  I live in Hamilton and we do not have an Apple store for me to take into.  I bought it at future shop.
I have also tried to uninstall and update the driver but that did not work.  What is wrong and what do you recommend I do.
I was to reinstall itunes over the itunes that I have would that work.
    thanks for your response.

my ipod touch 2nd generation version 3.1.3. all o0f a sudden had stopped charging and will no longer show up in itunes.when i tried charging it that day it wouldnt charge and now its dead. i tried charging it back up and wont charge and when i try to turn it on it only shows the apple with black background and turns off again.any suggestions please text (574) 344-6625 or email [email protected] or [email protected]

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Try:

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
