2nd RAM slot blocked from factory on new iMac?

I just received a new 20" base iMac with 1 gig of RAM today. I had purchased an additional 1 gig from crucial.com to add when it arrived. When I tried to install it the black plastic tab on the empty slot actually curled up on the BACK end and prevented the RAM from going into the slot. I tried every possible way of inserting it and to me it looks like it must have been a factory problem. I took the RAM out of the slot that was factory installed and the tab didn't curl up in the back. So I removed the tab on the empty side cut off the excess (about 80% longer than it should have been) reattached it and the RAM went in fine. Is this normal? Did I miss something? Are they shipping it in a configuration to try to prevent upgrades?

Hey, do you have more specific info....I just got one too in the last two weeks....refurbed actually, and same exact problem. Can you be specific as to how you got the tab, and cut it..... I don't want to screw anything up.

I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

If your MacBook came with it already installed, it may not be a version compatible with your new iMac.

Lenovo G580 2nd Ram slot broken

My laptop was preinstalled with 4gb and recently I brought a new 4gb ram to add to the computer but as I inserted it in the 2nd slot it still detects it as 4gb. I tried numerous times and also tried swapping them to find out and I know it isn't the new ram because Windows detects it on 1st slot but it's only when I put a ram in the 2nd slot that it has errors. My Windows is 64 bit so it should be able to use more memory. I don't know whether it could be the snap-in or something is wrong with the memory in the hardware. Could I get this fixed from a store or some remedy to get it to read?

Nevermind everyone. I feel so stupid right now. Turns out after hours of messing around with the ram slot I forgot that I needed to actually push down the ram into the slot rather than just inserting into place. I solved the problem myself so it turns out it wasn't a bad slot after all.

Can't migrate from G4 to new iMac

I just brought home my new iMac today and can't transfer my info from my G4. It finds the firewire, but on the screen that calculates the size of the volumes to transfer it only finds the network. The users, applications and file sizes just "calculate", it just hangs and does nothing. I've waiting over 20 minutes for something to change and nothing does.
What am I not doing to get the info from old to new?

You can get better help if you post everything about your two computers: system, ram, devices connected etc.
The way you connected both computers.
Just in case you don't know, for me it has worked this way.
Permissions repaired in the old Mac
Both connected via firewire - the iMac first - the old one started holding down "T" key - in Utilities Folder "Migration Assistant" will guide you.

Migration assistant stalled ( 110 hours, after 30 hours ). How else can I transfer my data from PC to new iMac without wireless migration assistant?

i am a new mac user
i have a new imac
was trying to transfer data from old pc to imac using migration assistant ( wirelessly )
i had done it once already, but i noticed that although it took about 8 hours, very little data from the c drive was actually transferred ( i had not noticed i had to designated folders to copy )
so i did it again, targetting folders on the D drive and my external hard drive F - lots of data ( about 300 GB )
after an hour i noticed that the estimated time for completion was 88 hours ! i did let it run for about 30 hours anyway and hoped for the best ...
this morning when i woke up the time remaining was estimated at 42 hours, but then it suddenly jumped to 110 hours !!!
when i came home 8 hours later, it was still at 110 hours, so i stopped it - i assumed it had crashed ...
i got a message that one folder on my pc might have been lost - corrupted
incredibly, after more than 30 hours, no data had actually been transferred to my new mac !!!!
in any case, i see now that migration assistant created a new user account anyway, which i do not want

how can i transfer data from my pc laptop to my new imac, preferrably with a direct cable connection as opposed to wireless, directly into my main account
and i how can i delete the other account migration assistant created in the initial "successful" transfer

Trying to install iwork '09 from dvd on new imac with no dvd drive.....iwork is brand new (bought off ebay) in unopened box....I have at my disposal an older imac with dvd drive and a 16GB thumb drive...what is best way to load iwork on the new imac?

First use Disk Utilty to make a disk image of the iWork disc on your iMac. Then there are two easy ways to install on your mothers new iMac. One is to copy to your USB thumb drive, visit your mother and install from the thumb drive. The other is to use a free upload and download service like www.wetransfer.com. Upload the .dmg disk image via www.wetransfer.com, then your mother downloads and installs. After installation you'll need to update iWork for Mountain Lion compatibility.

Transferring iPhoto collection from eMac to new iMac

I'm stumped here. I tried burning CDR back-ups of my iPhoto collection (with Tiger installed) on the old eMac and then inserting the CDRs into the new iMac which has Leopard installed. That doesn't seem to work. Many of the photos are only a few kbs in size. Yet some are around 400 kbs too.
There must be an easy, efficient way to transfer photos. After all, these are Macs we're talking about!!

I actually did copy iPhoto from the eMac to a portable HD. Still no luck. However what I did was drag the desktop iPhoto icon to the portable HD. It took awhile to transfer but it still doesn't seem to work. Maybe just dragging the iPhoto icon isn't the right way.
I find it odd that even when I burned iPhoto to a CDR from my eMac (this was when it was able to hold my photos, now there's way too many), it still wouldn't transfer to the new iMac's iPhoto. Again, I must be missing something fundamental here. I'm just so used to dragging and copying.

File transfer from eMac to new iMac

I plan on transferring files from my eMac (10.4.11) to the new iMac with mountain Lion. Since the new Mac doesn't have a firewire port, here is my plan:
1) buy a 400 to 800 firewire adapter cable
2) buy a 800 firewire to thunderbolt cable
3) daisychain them and run migration assistant with the eMac in target disk mode
Will this work?

If your old iMac has Firewire, you can use the migration assistant that comes with the new iMac described in this article:

If your old iMac has no Firewire, networking the two machines has differing instructions depending on which operating system is installed on the old iMac. What's the newest operating system you have installed on the iMac G3, if this is the case?
Speaking of operating systems, the iMac G5 does not come with Mac OS 9 preinstalled. Nor is it able to boot into Mac OS 9. However, on its installation disks is a program to "restore" Mac OS 9 so that it can be used in Mac OS X's "Classic" environment. The Classic environment allows most Mac OS 9 applications to work, though many drivers that previously worked under Mac OS 9 may not work within the Classic environment for specific peripherals, and graphics drivers for specific games. If you were only using Mac OS 9 previously, you may want to keep around the iMac G3 for those Mac OS 9 applications that don't work in Classic. I jUST GOT MY NEW G5 and was curious to the protection plan. I bought my emac three years ago from comp usa with a three year service plan and never used it. I did not purchase the plan on my new imac. Do you think this was a bad idea? Also, can you still purchase the plans from Aplle/compusa after the purchase. If so how long do you have. Thanks

I too had been questioning buying applecare. I got my iMac December 5 2005, and in January the harddrive had to be replaced. Yes I was very very happy I have a one year warranty and of course all I did was drive about 20 mins and drop it off at the local applestore and they replaced it in a timely matter. But it has made me think, Im still use to my windows days and I have replaced many a harddrive in those machines, all I had to do was buy a harddrive and pop it in. You cannot do that with this iMac and it would cost about $400 if it were not under warranty, so yeah before the date in december of 2006 I will be getting applecare,,,, just in case
