3-color "double" line...graphic styles?

I'd like to create a "double" line that uses 3 colors.  The third color would be the gutter space in between, either white, or clear.  The lines on the outside would have different colors, and/or different dotted or solid patterns.
Example:
Red 1pt
White 1pt
Green 1pt
How would I create a Graphic Style of this type?

535678,
For a simple double line, you may use an Art Brush, for more complicated versions such as one full and one dashed, you may use a Pattern Brush.
You may:
1) Create a rectangle with a height corresponding to the first line thickness and an arbitrary length, or corresponding to one dash and one gap, and give it the first colour, no stroke;
2) Move a copy straight down (or up) by the distance in between plus the first line thickness, and change the height if needed (setting the upper left Reference Point in the Transform palette/panel), and change the colour.
Now you can define it as an Art Brush, or if you want the second line dotted:
3) For the line to be dashed, reduce its length to the dash.
Now you can define it as a Pattern Brush.

  • Can I make a "recolor artwork" into a graphic style?

    I may be over-thinking this:
Let's say I have a logo that is made with one spot color, plus a gradient of that spot color and white. I want to quickly change the logo from one spot color to another. I can't make the new colors into a Graphic Style, since the logo has multiple fills. I can't just click on another spot color in the Swatches panel, because it fills all the shapes with 100% of that color.
Is there a one-click solution for this? See example if my writing doesn't make sense

I would defer to Wade's knowledge of typos.
If your spot only shows up in your logo, you can replace the swatch with the new spot swatch.  Pick it as usual out of your library and then option drag the new swatch onto the old swatch. (you could also temporarily move to a new document to do it if you don't want to replace all instances of your old color, but at that point, live color seems more efficient...)

  • Graphic styles that use current fill color instead of stomping them?

Sorry if this is a really stupid, newbie question; I am a stupid newbie.
If I make a graphic style/appearance, it stores the colors of the fill and stroke and will then stamp that down on whatever else I apply it to (obviously). e.g. if I make a graphic style of a pale yellow fill and a bright orange dropshadow screen to make a glowing neon kind of look, and then drop that style onto a bright blue star, it will make the star pale yellow.
Is there a way to do a graphic style that _modifies_ the existing appearance instead of stomping it - e.g. dropping that graphic style on my blue star would make a pale blue fill with a bright green dropshadow screen.
e.g. A graphic style that said "make the new fill 110% value, 85% saturation, same hue as the existing fill color, add a 25 pt dropshadow that has the color of 90% value, 110% saturation, -3 hue of the existing fill color." And then that style dropped on a yellow star and a blue star would result in a glowing neon yellow star and a glowing neon blue star.
The reason I ask: I have a bunch of geometric shapes of various shades of red, orange, yellow and brown, and would like to see what they would all look like with dropshadows of dark, very desaturated complementary colors (the orange shape gets a dark blue/gray dropshadow, the yellow shape gets a dark purple/gray dropshadow, etc.). Do I have to go in and modify each appearance by hand, or is there some way I can automate that?
Thanks, and apologies if this is a really obvious question.
    Ken

You won't get as much control as you describe (specific HSV values), but try putting a negative value in the Drop Shadow dialog's Darkness field.
To create a Graphic Style that can apply an Effect without disturbing the existing fill/stroke of the object(s), first group the object(s), then apply the Effect (Drop Shadow, etc.) to the Group, and then drag the Group to the Graphic Styles palette.

  • I format a cell with a double line at the bottom and it appears until I move to another cell and the formatting is lost.

In Numbers, I format a cell with a double line at the bottom and it appears until I clik on another cell and then it disappears.

When you describe the "double" line are you talking about something like this?
If so this is only selecting an edge of a cell.  You still have to select:
    1) Line style using the menu to the right of the one I have circled (currently  "Thin")
    2) Line width using the menu to the right of the previous one and, finally,
    3) the line color using the menu to the right of the previous one
Even so I have not found a way to copy cell border formatting so I ALWAYS wait until the very end to add border formatting.

  • Defining a background color for a paragraph style

Hello and please excuse this very basic question, but I am completely stumped.
How do I simply define a background color for a paragraph style? I cannot use a table etc. because the styles are mapped during an XML conversion. Code lines should receive a gray background box to separate them from the text.
Also, is there a way to force line breaks whithin words for a specific style? The text, formated in Courier, should just fill the space with a fixed width per character and break wherever the line ends.

With some drawbacks it's doable using two paragraph tags.
The first tag, e.g. "Line" is empty (no text), and it has a reference page graphic that's just a rectangle filled 100% with color and set to have a percentage tint so that the text will "show through" it.
"Line" is also set to have a negative space below it, e.g. -12 points.
"Code" paratag has the actual code text in it, and it's set to have a negative space above, e.g. -12 points.
I've done projects where I have multiple Line paratags differing by the number of code lines needing to be shaded, e.g. Line1, Line2, Line3.
Unfortunately there isn't a way to automatically have the line expand to the correct depth of the Code paragraph, although I believe this would probably be something that could be done as a Framescript, to run through a document and create new "line" paratags of the correct depth depending on how many Code paragraphs or lines are in the following paratag.

  • Graphic styles not displaying

I have Graphic styles in the panel such as the Additive ones that have little red lines through the lower right corner, and when I apply them to images it make the artwork it was applied to disappear. What is going on with these?
    Thanks.

    1. I guess what I am confused by, is why are these even here (blank styles) if you can simply define your own style from scratch? Do these serve some other purpose?
    2. When you define a new style, which attributes from the selected artwork does it take on? It seems to take the color, what about stroke, texture, etc? Is there a way to choose which attributes to select for the style and which ones you do not want it to take on?
    Thanks.

  • How to draw and modify double lines with Adobe Illustrator?

I need tot draw roadmaps. This should be easy using the pen tool, but my problem is that I cannot find a way to draw double lines with this tool. I have seen many fancy border styles and patterns. Some do have double or even quadruple lines, but the problem is than that they have an offset from the vector line and the space in between the two lines (the edges of the road) cannot be filled. Somewere I also found some pens called 'Double line 1.1' to 'Double line 1.6' but they also had an offset from the vector and I could not chance the size of the lines and the interval in between them independently.
What I am looking for is a way to draw two lines in parallel and have the option tot fill the space in between with a color or even a pattern.
The color and size of the lines should be changeable to make a distinction between several types of road.
Is there an existing set of pencils for this purpose? It would be nice to be able to draw not only roads, but also railways and rivers!
I am surely not the first person who needs to do this?
    I use AI version 6

    Jacob,
Thanks for the answer. I have been searching for a solutions for a long
time, but today I found the solution on a forum (not on this one). That
solution is exactly as you described below, i.e. using a coloured line and a
narrower white line on top of the first one. My problem was that I did not
know how to create a custom brush based on the two lines. Now I know how to
do that. However, I still have the problem. I can now draw double lines and
I can change the color of the background line (the coloured one) but I
cannot change the white colour of the narrower line. I assume that I have to
completely redefine a new brush when I need to change that colour too.

    Rob Kole

  • 'In-Line Graphics' Need best way to use in InDesign

I'm working on a fairly dry piece with over a thousand pages and want to add some simple, type-based, graphic elements to help demonstrate some of the books' content. I want the graphics to move along with the text when there is text re-flow as the entire book is connected and will move on every page when I make changes. I do want the graphic elements to stay in place. The term 'in-line graphic' yielded no result on a search on these forums so I assume that that term, from days-gone-by Pagemaker and Quark days is no longer a valid term.
To help me, please tell me what graphic capabilities InDesign has that will allow me to insert the following that can be constructed directly within InDesign and not placed from outside graphics created in another application:
    Box around text
    Tables
    Straight lines or Rules
These are the things I would like to make use of. Please give me your experience with these and how well they work in InDesign, also give quick steps in how to create these types of graphics in InDesign, I thank you for this help.
    Ken

    Box around text
If you want it to flow, you could use an anchored object as was already suggested, but I'd say use a single table cell instead, it's much easier.
    Tables
Unless you're using an ancient version of InDesign, there should be a whole "Table" menu right in between "Object" and "View."
    Straight lines or Rules
There are paragraph rules for lines above & below paragraphs (you can find them in the paragraph style, or in a few other places, notably the options for the Paragraph panel), but I'd rather add underline to carefully positioned tab stops, just as we did back in the RageMaker era.
I don't bother to search the forums - the search tool seems to be permanently broken - but you can paste or place pretty much any image or graphical object created in ID into a text flow and it'll become the "inline" version of an anchored object.

  • Applying a graphics style to object in extendscript

    Hi
I've looked around but can't find anything on this although I'm sure its pretty straightforward.
How do I apply a graphic style (pre defined in the GRAPHIC STYLES palette as 'Line 1) to an object, say rectangle, called 'rectangle1' using extendscript.
Can't work this out. (In illustrator CS5 bye the way)
    Thanks

    var addStyle = idoc.graphicStyles['add'];
    addStyle.applyTo (sel);

  • Adding Graphic Styles using VBA

    Hi all
How would I go about applying graphic styles to a path using VBA? I would imagine the following line is wrong because it doesn't work.Any help would be appreciated.
    idoc.GraphicStyles("02-S").ApplyTo (isquare2)

You're right, it is no fun to have someone give you all the answers. Trial and error is how I learn the most, well it least to make it stick.  Believe me, I go online and try out different things before posting anything on here. Along the way, I might not find the answer I'm looking for, but I always find something out, and most of the time, it's something I needed a while back.
Yep, I've seen that error quite a few times on numerous projects, it means that the object isn't affected by the methods or properties I'm trying to affect it with.
However, I was able to make it work by removing the () from the object variable isquare2.
    idoc.GraphicStyles("02-S").ApplyTo isquare2
    Thanks for the challenge Carlos!

  • CS3 Graphic styles frustration

    Graphic styles in CS3;
I've defined several graphic styles and saved them in a library. Once imported into a new document or make a template doc with style already there.
Drawing lines in a layer:  clicking the graphic style i want and draw a line, so far so good. Copy and paste that line ...
gives me a NEW graphic style-1 which happens to be the same as the graphic style in which the line was drawn???? Why???
By clicking in the Appearance menu on New art has basic appearance and doing the same as above won't give a new style-1 but....
Now the lines I draw, copy or paste has no graphic style at all?????
What I want is to draw ,copy and paste lines with a specific graphic style and illustrator to get hold of the style!
    What am i doing wrong?

This bug or what ever it is did not seem to happen on Graphic Styles that had more attributes than one fill & one stroke.  So when I made a Graphic Style & I only needed a stroke with no fill I would just add another empty fill so I would end up with a stroke & 2 empty fills.  I do not know why but this problem did not seem to happen on any of these more complicated Styles.  The problem did happen one time with a complex Style but I just recreated it & it has not happen since.

  • Envelopes & Changing Graphic Styles

    Hi All,
When I create an envelope warp with text then apply a "Graphic Style 1" that works fine. If I close the file and reopen the "Graphic Style 1" is correct. When I attempt to change to"Graphic Style 2" the text seems to make a double. If I remove the envelope I can toggle from graphic styles fine.
Any help is appreciated!! Thank you!!

Jennifer I am using CS 4 and if I apply a graphic style the text after I do an envelope distort with warp it applies fine if I then select a new graphic style for the text it is now the new graphic style.

  • Graphic Styles, Multiple Strokes

I make a graphic style with more than one stroke. I choose the brush tool. I click the graphic style. I draw a line. only one of the strokes is applied to the path. I have to select the path again, and then click the graphic style for it to apply.
"New art has basic appearance" is unchecked.
It's time consuming and frustrating. And it takes the punch out of one of the better additions to the program.

Well to be honest this is going to sound sarcastic but it is not intended. You make three lines the way you want it to apply to new shapes. the you select and drg it ot he brush panel and eselct to make it an pattern brush you have to read the help files in order to understand how to make a pattern brush.

  • Graphic Styles multiplying when objects are copied

I have some groups containing lines with graphic styles. Sometimes, when I copy and paste these groups I get new graphic styles with name plus the number 1, 2, 3...
    E.g. "Foo" -> "Foo 1", later "Foo 1" -> "Foo 2"
Do you know how to avoid this happening?

That could help - but it seems that it would kill your CS5 specific stuff if you opened the file up in an earlier version?
Is that not true? Would I lose any other data?
I tried bcl5462's comment below but the import into cs4 failed completely (I get a "PDF Objects that have been Reinterpreted error" and none of my original document remains), and I'm not sure if it even deals with graphic styles (from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408008.html )
Open the file with Illustrator CS5 (trial)
From Window > Actions, "Delete Unused Panel Items"
Also - try clicking on the brushes panel and selecting all unused brushes - delete.
Select all unused swatches and delete.
    Save the file.
Open the file with an older version of Illustrator (e.g. Illustrator CS3)
This will inform you the file was saved in a newer version of Illustrator and the file will be imported.
In this process Illustrator CS3 will not import the corrupted brushes or swatches.
    Save the cleaned file.
