3 itunes express & IMac g5 as base station?

just Trying to get itunes into 3 rooms no internet or ethernet etc.. I have a Imac g5 and 3 airport express with itunes. I Can get 2 to work but third still seems to be out of range.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. i see you can use the devices as WDS but not sure of the configuration and if my Imac g5 should be my main base station for some reason it is not in my list of choices.
My dining room express which works is set up as my main base station for the network i called itunes.
Thank you

Here's some information on creating a WDS network.

  • HT1178 Can I just use my airport express as the primary base station and the time capsule as the network client?

I bought a new airport time capsule 3tb to be used to save to file all my pictures. Can I use it as network client and the airport express as the
    Primary base station?

To my opinion this looks a bit like what I'm looking for.
At the moment I have an Imac that is wireless connected to a 2TB time capsule (TC1).
To this time capsule I have another 2TB time capsule (TC2) connected via a upt wire connection.
At the moment there is a backup made via time machine from the Imac to the time capsule TC1 (the second TC is not used)
I'm not so technical so I hope you understand the configuration.
What do I want to achieve :
copy all my data from the Imac to TC1 so that the information can be accessed by more users.
create an automatic backup from TC1 to TC2 (mirror or raid system) for security.
give access to some users on the network to access TC1 to read and write data.
TC2 only serves as backup from TC1 and no direct access is needed to this disk.
If there is a solution, thanks for explaining it in 'IT kindergarden style' so that I can understand and use the info.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • AirPort, older AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Express, Newer AirPort Extreme Base Station

This may sound like a fairly dumb question, but here goes anyway:
I have a 27" iMac with the following AirPort Extreme card:
Card Type:    AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x8F)
    Firmware Version:    Atheros 9280: 2.1.14.6
For a Base Station, I'm currently using a pretty long-in-the-tooth M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station (with modem and antenna port)
I recently bought an Airport Express:
    AirPort Express MB321LL/A (A1264) to
    A. Use AirTunes to send iTunes from my Man Cave on the first floor at one end of the house to the family room on the first floor at the other, where it will connect to an A/V setup, and, probably, one of my USB printers
    B. Act as a repeater for the AirPort Extreme Base Station, which is physically closer to the Man Cave than to the family room. My wife and I use our ancient-but-hangin'-in-there iBook G4s in the family room (and upstairs) to check email, eBay, etc. Both in the family room and especially upstairs, we sometimes get only 2-3 bars on the AirPort signal strength indicator in the menu bar.
I see that I can get, from a well-known third-party retailer, an AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 (1st Generation), for an exceptionally reasonable price.
My question is, what would getting the AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 do for me, if anything? I know it would give me one more signal source in the repeater chain, and I could probably put the Auld Nyle M8799LL/A in the stairway or upstairs to boost the signal upstairs, and I could use the USB port in the AirPort Extreme A1143 for connecting another USB printer or USB external hard drive (would this drive be available to any Mac on the AirPort network?)
Any other configuration possibilities and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the prompt reply and the very helpful links. I'm going through all the support docs right now, but from your explanation and what I've seen in the support docs so far, it would appear that the maximum bandwidth is achieved by a physically-connected "Roaming Network."
I'm so out of it, I'm afraid I'd never heard  of "Powerline adapters," but I looked them up, and I guess this is the system that uses "Romex" - style standard house wiring to carry signal, which cuts down on each individual Base Station's power overhead (does it also affect bandwidth?).
I see a lot of names selling these adapters -- Western, D-Link, NETGEAR, ZyXEL, Monster, Sling Media, PowerNet, Cisco-Linksys, Actiontec, Medialink, Rosewill, TRENDnet -- and a lot of different configurations: 1 port, 2 ports, 4 ports. Basically I have one 27" iMac that doesn't go anywhere (it's not too portable!), a couple iBook G4s, and a point where I want to run 1/8" mini-jack-to-RCA L/R audio cable from the AirPort Express to an A/V receiver. I doubt this configuration is going to change, as I'm 63, and too lazy to lug stuff around if I don't have to. What do you think would be the best solution for me, considering I just ordered the AEBSn and I already have a brand-new AXn. Should the 27" iMac, since it ain't movin', be connected by ethernet/"Powerline adapter", rather than relying on the internal Airport Extreme card? I guess what I'm asking is, given what I want to do, how many of these Powerline adapters, what kind (do you recommend), with how many ethernet ports do I need?
Thank you again for your prompt and informed help.

  • Airport Express loses connection to base station

Airport Express second gen loses connection to base station, has to be reset.

Roger that.  Late 2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4mb ram, 10.9.1 Mavericks, formatted and hand loaded after questionable upgrade load.  Fast, flawless, no issues.
Airport Express configured to wirelessly extend existing network for the express purpose of supplying an analog
input to a stereo amplifier via airplay.  No other devices are connected to the AE.
The WAP is a Century Link Actiontec C1000A VDSL2 physically located 6 feet from the AE with no obstructions.
There are no existing proximal fortuitous distortion or RF interference sources.  Other 802.X networks near are
on non-conflicting channels.  The WAP is less than six months old and has no issues.
The WAP is configured  for MAC filtering with the SSID turned off.  In the allow list are two iphones, a printer, two more MBPs and the Airport Express.  One of the iphones is loaded with the Remote Ap which functions
flawlessly when the AE is connected.
The AE connects properly in the Extend Existing Network mode and performs as advertised as long as Air Play
    and/or itunes is active.
Some time after music has ended, the MBP has gone to sleep, or been shut down ... the Airport  Express loses its connection to the wireless network, with its amber light flashing.
Performing a reset and reconnecting is necesssary, and all works as advertised after.  Subsequently,
sleep, inactivity, or shutdown will cause loss of connection again.
I am aware the AE can be connected with CAT6, but that is unnaceptable.  If I had wanted to use wire I
would have plugged the MBP into the amplifier and saved $100.
My speculation is some sort of TCPIP flub in the design ... as in the AE does not natively transmit keep-alive
packets when it stops getting data from the Air Play computer.  It would be easy to decide whether to fix
the problem or return an inadequately designed product ... if there were any information about it.  No schematics, no operation description however leaves me only to say thank you for your time and hope
    you have the solution.

  • Airport Express Can't See Base Station

I have an airport extreme base station that has two computers normally connected to my network wirelessly (iMac G4 and Powerbook G4) which have worked fine for months. After completing an apple security update this evening on both computers the Powerbook G4 did not automatically connect to the network upon restart as it normally does. The iMac G4 started up fine and is how I am posting this note. The powerbook on the toolbar shows the network I want to join but when I select it (and and see the check mark next to it) I still cannot access the internet. When I run the Airport admin utility it cannot see any base stations (despite the iMac sitting 1 foot away and working perfectly). When I manually give it the IP address and password it says "unable to read the configuation of the selected base station." When I try the Airport Setup Assistant it also lists my network as one that I can choose but when I click on the "continue" button it says "unable to establish a network connection" and that my computer could not connect to the internet. Help!!! I have tried every angle I can thing of to get the Powerbook to connect like it did a few hours ago.

I have just discovered the same problem. After downloading the latest security update my Powerbook G4 [10.3.9] can not "see" any base station or express and/or connect to my network. The G5 running 10.4.5 works fine and sees all. Everything had been working just fine before the update then... Have tried all the work arounds I can think of and wasted a great deal of time. Any answers out there?

  • Extending network with Airport Express from Time Capsule Base Station

I have a working Time Capsule wireless base station that's setup and working successfully. I want to extend my network and connect to my stereo for playing via iTunes. I've spent hours trying to get the Airport Express to connect.
What's the correct basic approach? Time Capsule base and adding the AE to the network? Setting up WDS? If anyone has the proper settings for both the TC and the AE I would be very appreciative.

I still say this needs to be addressed by Apple on why there isn't 2 different forums for the old Express or the new Express.... Just like the Extreme Base Station. A lot of time is wasted on the forum on which Express a person has.....
    1. Old Express with "g" ????
    2. New Express with "n" ????
If you have the old Express, you need to set it up using WDS along with the TC.
If you have a new Express, then you can just check the TC settings for "allow this network to be extended" and set the Express to extend the network. This is much easier than setting up a WDS.
    Good Luck

  • Express w/ PPoE DSL Base Station & AirTunes

I have a Base Station with Wireless Internet working great with Deasktop System.
Have set up Express station with remote speakers downstairs. I have made connection and played music great!
I want to use internet and play music downstairs but each is different network.
My Base Station connects with DSL/Ethernet connection using PPoE.
    The express uses DCHP.
Am I screwed?? I want to have it all be one!
    Walk me through it please....

What you want to do is configure your Airport Express so that it "joins" the existing wireless network created by your Airport Extreme Base Station - this is one of the configuration options available to you when you run the Airport Setup Assistant. After this has been set up, you will have a single wireless network on which you can access the internet and stream iTunes to the Airport Express at the same time.

  • Cannot connect 2nd Express as a Remote Base station

When I try to set up a 2nd express it doesn't connect.
I see in the Admin app that it has a "strange" IP address assigned. The Extreme Base station and the 1st Express have addresses like "192.168.9.x" and the new (2nd) Express has a 169.254.X.X and although you can see it in Admin you can't do anything to it.
I configured both the Express Remotes via Admin and use the "Auto config as Remote" feature in the WDS tab via the Extreme Base Station's configuration.
I also have an iMac with a hard-wired iMac connection to the Base Station.
    Any ideas? Thanx.

I would do another reset and then configure the second Express manually. To configure the Express you have to be on the same network either with or without a wire.
Here are some steps to try and let us know the results:
    - From your wireless laptop run Airport Admin Utility
    - Select the Airport Extreme Bas Station (AEBS) and write down its "Airport ID"
    - Open the configuration of the AEBS and note the channel number it is on. It should not be on "Automatic"
    - Hard reset the 2nd Express
    - Connect the Express to your laptop with an ethernet cable
    - Both your laptop and the Express should be on the 169.254.x.x ethernet network since no DHCP server is available over their ethernet
    - Open the configuration of the 2nd Express which has a name similar to "Airport Base xxxxxx" in Airport Admin Utility
    - Change the Base Station name to something like "Express 2" and change the Base Station password so it's not the default "public"
    - Leave the wireless mode as "Create a wireless network (Home Router)"
    - Change the Network Name, wireless security and channel to match exactly what the other two Airports are set to
    - Under the Internet tab change it to "Connect Using: Airport WDS"
    - In the "MAC Address:" field enter the Airport ID of the AEBS
    - Under the Network tab uncheck "Distribute IP Addresses"
    - Under the WDS tab check "Enable this base station as a WDS Remote Base Station" and keep the check mark "Allow wireless clients on this base station"
    - In the "Main Airport ID:" field enter the AEBS Airport ID again or click the Select button and pick it from the list (not the 1st Express)
    - Under the Music tab set as desired
    - Click the Update button finally and wait for it to update
    - Disconnect the ethernet cable
    - If necessary move the Express to it desired location
Did that help? If the "Auto configure as a WDS remote base station" from the Extreme doesn't work those are the manual steps to apply to an Express!

  • Connecting Airport Express to Airport Extreme Base Station

Hi Folks. I am at my wit's end.
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (main hub) purchased in 2003. Just bought a new Airport Express and it just won't connect to the AEBS. I think I've tried everything. From automatic WDS set up (described here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454) to using the Airport Utility and/or Airport Admin to set up. Nothing.
I've looked through the discussions and found this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7011490&#7011490 but the solution provided makes absolutely no sense to me.
All I end up getting after numerous attempts at connecting to the AEBS is error messages and then a flashing yellow (amber I guess) light. When I do a "hard reset" it just goes back to flashing amber and it seems a factory reset doesn't work because according to this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044 I'm supposed to see the green light flash four times after I hold the reset button and plug in but that never happens.
This is driving me crazy. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hey John.
I did finally solve the issue but I'm not quite sure how it happened but this is what I did:
First, I did had hard reset on the AEBS and set it up all over again via AirPort Utility. I set it up to use a WPA/WPA2 personal password.
Next I did a hard reset (not a factory reset) (hard reset: while plugged in, use a paper clip and hold the reset button for 15-20 seconds) on the AirPort Express and then restarted my computer.
After restart, I opened AirPort Utility and set up the Express to join my AEBS network. When it got to the point where it asked me to choose the network to join, I chose my AEBS network and it magically knew the WPA password I had set earlier and then after that it was smooth sailing.
I had tried a number of variations of that process many times before (and failed) and for some reason this time, it worked.
Hope it works out for you.
    Best,
    Benjamin

  • Remote administration of Express in an Extreme Base Station network

I am a newb administrator of a small network of an AEBS with 2 Expresses in "extend a network" mode. I can access the Base Station over the internet but I haven't figured out how I can do the same with the Expresses.
Also, I understand that MAC filtering is unavailable for the Expresses in "ext a net" mode. Is this correct? It seems to be operational for the Base Station but even restricted MAC addys can access the network through the Expresses

    On this same topic;
We have a new Extreme base station that connects 1 MBP, (wirelessly), 1 HP Laptop (wirelessly) and 2 PC (via ethernet) to the internet.
All of the computers can see and use the Extreme base station and the printer connected to it via USB.
We also have an Airport Express that the two laptops can see. This has a printer connected to it as well via USB. (both are new Canon printers and all of the software for each, and their drivers are loaded on all computers).
Both the Extreme and Express have a steady green light, their own names and are set up on the same network.
Though my MBP can see both the Extreme and Express, neither "see" each other as far as I can tell. And, the printer connected to the Express cannot be seen in either Bonjour Printers, or anywhere else.
Also, in order to "attempt" to find the printer connected to the Express, I have to disconnect from the Extreme Base Station and connect to the Express.
How can I get the printer (connected to the Express) to show up in my pick list of printers WITHOUT having to disconnect from the Extreme and connect to the Express. Also, how can we get the Express to be connected to the internet via the Extreme?
All searches here and documents I have poured though do not address this issue and we'd really like to get this straightened out. I am willing to take a lot of time to do this, but do it right.
Can someone please help me with this?
    Thank you in advance,

  • ITunes not recognizing iPhone without base station

I recently bought a new case for my iPhone and it is hard to take off. I usually put my phone on the base station but when I take the wire out of the base and plug it directly into the phone, iTunes does not recognize it. I have tried to connect it with iTunes open/closed, rebooted. BTW this is XP. Any ideas?

    FYI:
I figured it out. I was using an older iPod cable that was plugged into the base. That seemed to work fine but when I plugged the cable directly into the phone it did not stay connected. I switched cables and am now using the one that come with the iPhone. I haven't had any disconnects yet and it seems to be charging correctly.

  • Set up existing expresses with new extreme base station

We just replaced our old extreme base station with the new fast one. It works good so far except that now my two existing airport expresses- one I use for airtunes and the other to relay the wireless signal to a far corner of the house- don't work. What do I need to do to set them up with the new station? I tried a reset but it didn't help.

Either connect them with ethernet to configure the Expresses or find them wirelessly(you can use Airport Utility or the older Airport Admin Utility). The bottom line is to get the Express selected in Airport ie the icon on the top file menu then use the Utility. If your nearwork is not visible to select then use the preferred drop down menu found in Network pane of system preferences. You may need to type in the network name or use the + button.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and it has been operating for several months, I decided to add an Airport Express to extend the range and it appeared that it was a simple process. NOT. • Cannot Connect Airport Express to Airport Extreme Base Station

I have just purchased a new Airport Extreme Base station and have it configured and running properly.
I would like to use my Airport Express to play Air Tunes and have tried to join my Airport Express's network. I have not managed to get this to work.
I have tried to configure the Airport Express manually and in Assist Me mode but every time it reboots to reconfigure the unit, it continues to flash amber. I have done numerous hard resets and followed the methods discussed in other posts but cannot get the unit to connect.
I am running the latest firmware on both units.
Has anyone solved this problem? If so, please help!

    Shallers...you are not alone.
I spend several hours this past weekend trying to get a brand new Express to work with a brand new Extreme station using all Apple computers.
Still no luck, after a gazillion permutations.
I really like the Extreme, it works very well, even with non-Apple devices.
The Express is going back....gawd awful thing from the Darkness.
