30" cinema display video quality

Just wondering. Maybe its just me but the video quality on the 30" when I'm playing a dvd isn't the greatest. I was expecting a lot more. The image is quite pixelated. Is it the monitor or the dvd or the G5 or everything. I would have thought a monitor would have superior image quality over any other screen.

please realize that DVD's use a resolution of 720x480, your 30" display is 2560x1920 or something like that, so when you are running a DVD full screen of course it is not going to look to hot.
That is just how it goes unfortunately.
Unless you have it connected to a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player, etc. runnint at 1080p (1920x1080) DVD's are not going to look like they would on a lower resolution TV.
Until they release DVD's at a resolution of 2560x1920 or higher, you aren't going to see super quality video from a DVD, on that display.
hope that answers your question. it is not just you either, DVD's don't look very good on basically any computer screen out their actually, the resolution is just much much lower unfortunately.

  • 15" late 2013 Macbook Pro / Cinema Display video freeze

    Late 2013 rMBP 15". 2.6 i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SDD. 27" Cinema Display
Occasionally, and unpredictably, the video will freeze.
I can be on a google hangout and have full audio but the video does not update.
After 10 to 30 seconds the display starts responding again like nothing ever happened.
It only happens (that I have seen) when my Cinema Display is plugged in.
I had troubles with this display booting into BootCamp and had to leave it unplugged for 10m in order to get it to reset.
Anyone seen anything like this or have any ideas how to troubleshoot?

You'll get 2560 x 1600 - that's the max resolution of the display, and it's the max resolution of dual-link DVI (at least, at the standard refresh rate).

  • Mac Mini Core Duo and 23" Cinema Display: video graphics performance

I know the Mac Mini Core Duo and the 23" Cinema Display are compatible but can anybody tell me if one can expect better graphics performance when using a 20" display or does it not make any difference?

Thanks Dan but maybe I didn't make myself clear. What I'm interested in is whether or not one can expect a noticeable difference in video graphics performance between a 20" Cinema Display and a 23" Cinema Display, when connected to a Mac Mini Core Duo.

  • Screen Share - Change what to display & video quality

    Hi LCSS Team,
I have been playing around with screen share and have it working in collaborative (both ends can share/control their screens).
Upon initial selection of deskop/app/window, is there a way to allow users to change what to display without having to
    start/stop?
    Use case:
    - User A is viewing user B screen. User B would like to change view from desktop to a specific window.
Also, the screen share video feed is very pixelated. I have tried it multiple settings including what you guys sent
me. I am trying to get it to Skype like quality. Is that even possible?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi octoguy,
iChat makes hardware and connection speed checks as it starts up.
This gives you the framerate and bit rate duirng a call.
Lets say that your processor gives your iChat 15 fps
This will be the rate that you will then see to a another Mac.
The same computer is likely to get 10 frames per sec to a PC.
This is some part due to the PC putting a fair amout of effort into producing a clear detailed pic.
On some PCs this setting for the video pic is so high that the audio will drop out completely.
The cure is to bring the PC preview to the front (tabs)
Then click on the small icon that appears to the right and adjusting the slider that appears to the left.
This will incease the frame rate and bit rate from the PC. It makes the video look smoother although the actual quality has gone down (you may not be able to judge this quality difference by eye)
As general rule you will get about 2/3rds of the normal Mac to Mac framerate shown in the Connection Doctor. It also seems to take about 50% more Connection speed to get the same quality video.
So Mac to Mac min is 100Kbps where as Mac to PC will need about 150kbps.
The quality drop from 15 frames a sec to 10 frames a sec does make the video generally more blocky but does also depend a fair bit on the processor power of the PC and the camera used.
I know that sounds a little vague but there are really many variables that can be a factor.

  • Mpeg-2 HD video on a 30 inch Cinema Display

    Hello everyone,
I have a 1.6 ghz Power Mac G5 (first revision). I use EyeTV to record HD video in mpeg-2 format, and the playback on the G5 on just a 20 inch widescreen is not good at all, really. Would a video card upgrade help this, and would the playback still be smooth on a 30 inch Apple Cinema Display if the upgraded card supported it? Or is this G5 just not up to it? The current card is the stock GeForce FX 5200.
    Thanks for your help

I have said software (ver.3) with an EyeTV Hybrid. Elgato is pretty clear that PPC macs cannot handle HD:
*+Note: 720p or 1080i HD features require an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Analog TV recorded and processed by a software encoder; quality depends on processor performance.+* http://elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/hybrid09/product3.en.html
You're lucky if you are even recording the show properly. The only playback you'll have on that machine is to export the show to SD / 480p & come back about 8 hours later to watch it.
Any upgrades bought would almost get you a new Mini.

  • How connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

how connect a 27 cinema display to HP Pavilion with VGA video output

If it is a thunderbolt version of the apple 27" display, you don't.  The TB displays can only work with a TB source.
I also think you are out of luck with the mini-displayport versions of the apple 27" as well.   This would imply converting an analog VGA output  to a digital input of the 27".  I suspect that there is not enough data supplied by VGA for that to work and I do not believe any adapters exist for this.

    Hi Lionel,
As a general rule of thumb, the ATI Rage 128 Pro will not support a 20" LCD. That being said, there are reports of it doing just that (possibly the edition that went into the cube).
I'm not that familiar with the ins and outs of the Cube, so I can't give you authoritative information on it.

  • MSN Messenger uses wrong inbuilt webcam for video chat on triple screen set up. It uses a cinema display webcam not the iMac webcam.

For some strange reason if i attach my 2  apple cinema displays to my iMac to make a triple  screen set up msn messenger video chat does work but it uses the apple cinema display inbuilt webcam and not the iMac webcam. Its annoying as i have to turn sideways to get into the video call view.
So i have  a set up like this: an apple cinema display thunderbolt, then in the middle an iMac new then to the right of the iMac another apple thunderbolt cinema display. WWhen i use MSN messenger to make a video call it uses the inbuilt webcam on the far right apple thunderbolt cinema display and not the inbuilt webcam in the iMac in front of me, its annoying any ideas please.
If i unplug both side cinema displays MSN messenger uses the inbuilt camera on the iMac like normal but when  i use extra screens it uses the webcam built into those and not the iMacs webcam.

I would try with another client like skype or something
and if it's only msn messanger which have the problem it may
be more of a question for ms's forum?

  • Calibrating Apple Cinema Display for Video Editing

What's the procedure to calibrate an Apple Cinema Display for editing in FCP (editing and preliminary color grading)?
My camcorder can produce color bars, but I can't hook it up directly to the monitor. Shall I record color bars and use the recorded clip to calibrate? What's the procedure regarding calibration?
    Thanks!

The need to "calibrate" a display for video "editing" is a complete fallacy. There is no need to have accurate images when plopping pictures and graphics next to each other to create a story in a linear fashion. For accuracy you need a dedicated input/output device with a display that represents your intended delivery; projection, broadcast, whatever. If your intended delivery is web or phone only, well, it's a total rodeo where the word "consistency" has no meaning at all.
The MXO, it puts a look up table on a computer monitor and then does some other electronic mumbo jumbo to simulate interlacing and other tv junk. I call it lipstick on a pig, others here will give it high marks.
The only real constant is that if you want to play in the world of "hd", the costs are bigger than in "sd" and is the return on investment worth it?

  • S-Video & Cinema Display on MBP

I've posted this originally in the macBook Pro section but quickly realized that this is as much a FCP question as it is a macbook Pro question. Here's the link to the original post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=350386
I hadn't really had a need for this before, but today realized that if I'm to properly do video editing, I need to watch my stuff on a TV first. The problem is that I currently have a 23" Cinema display, and love the amount of screen that it lets me use with FCP. But I know that apple said a DVI-S-video adapter is available, but I also wanna use my Cinema display. Is there a way that I could have both??
    -Brian

A video feed of your computer display is not going to give you a proper view of your video. You should feed your firewire to a DA converter/deck/camera to get the true signal...

  • Is imac and cinema display the same quality monitor?

I'm looking to buy an imac but am really concerned about color quality. I currently have a cinema display and looking at this as a second computer. I've read some posts that suggest that the display technology in the imac is different than the quality of the display of the cinema displays. Yet from looking at the tech specs they appear pretty identical other than the glossy cover. Is this true?

The 24" iMac should have the same image quality as a Cinema Display. The 20" iMac uses an inferior display.

  • Digital Desktop Cinema Display Preview Video Not Playing

I can't get the Digital Desktop Cinema Display to work on either a 2nd display or on the main display.  The audio plays correctly and the video will update to the current frame when stopped, but no playing video.  I have "All frames" selected.  In "Single Frames", the screen just stays black while the audio plays.
I have done a clean install of Lion and reinstalled FCP with the update to 7.0.3. I have a Matrox MXO, but so far have left in out of the new clean install.
I have deleted the preferences, repaired permissions, check the disk, emptied the trash and restarted.  Mirror on desktop unchecked. I believe that these are all the suggestions from previous posts.
    Suggestions?

Why does final cut x not recognize the sharp PN- K321 monitor ( European version ) as output video monitor, and premiere yes?
Working with two cinema display and PN- K321 and I can not preview the output video at 4K by DisplayPort, whereas with premiere and after effects I have no problems

Look, you can build an HD DVD with an SD movie, just as you can build an SD DVD with an HD movie. This is not a bug, it is most likely user error. Apple will not be addressing it.
Just start over, and ensure you are building an SD DVD by bringing up the inspector for the disc (click on the background in the Graphical tab).
Make sure SD DVD is selected:
(If you do the same thing on your ill fated project, you'll see that HD DVD is selected)
Build your DVD and you'll be fine.
    Patrick
P.S. You will need to google HD DVD and Blu-Ray if you want to understand the difference between the formats. The reason that DVDSP included HD DVD was that its format was similar to SD DVD's. Blu-Ray is something else entirely.

  • No video on Mac Pro 266 + 20" Apple Cinema Display + ADC to DVI Adapter

When I boot my Mac Pro, I don't get a video signal. I currently have a 20" Apple Cinema Display (clear case) connected via an ADC to DVI adapter. I have connected the monitor/adapter on a Powerbook G4 wihout any issues, which rules out the monitor. I've tried everything: resetting PRAM/NVRAM, motherboard reset button, unplugging everything...nothing works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you guys using the ADC to DVI adapter or the DVI to ADC adapter?
I have a clear 23" cinema display and I was thinking of getting a new Mac Pro... From what I can tell, you need the DVI to ADC adapter that sells for $100+. Is that correct?
