30" Display power button

Just upgaraded my G5 with a 30" Display, however the power button the display does not start the computer as it did with my 23" display. The power button when pushed and the computer is on, it will turn off the computer, but it does not turn the G5 on anymore.
How can I get the power button on the display to not only turn the computer off, but also on??

It can't turn the computer on because it isn't powered through the computer anymore.
The power switch is only sending a command to your computer to shutdown... that isn't the same thing as actually turning it off. You could achieve the same result by selecting "Shutdown" from the Apple bar.
Unless Apple returns to the ADC connector, the days of powering on/off your computer from the display are over.

  • My Apple display power button is flashing short-short-long.

My Apple display power button is flashing short-short-long. I know what it means and I checked everything and everything seems fine. What can I do to ensure everything is really fine and the flashing stops. The computer and the display worked fine for over a year. It started doing it when I switched my computer off using the power button on the display. it never happened before.
    thanks!

What you might try is unplugging the monitor at it s ADC connexion to the video card and the plugging it back in - all with the Mac turned on and everything working (and flashing).
I had an LCD/ADC flatscreen monitor that would dim the top half of the screen and start flashing whenever I would run Disk Warrior or Applejack or switch to a different startup drive. Simply unplugging and replugging would return it to normalcy - for days or weeks - but sooner or later.... Grew tired of waiting for it to go altogether and bought another monitor, but I tried it the other day on a spare Mac and - sure enough - it started up dim and flashing. Remedy was the same: unplug and replug the ADC connexion and it was back to normal. No idea why!
No guarantee, and no idea how long it might last, but the effort is small and the price is right.

  • Cinema display power button

I have a 20" cinema display attached to a macbook pro. I usually just hit the power button on the side to turn it off, but all of a sudden when I try to turn off the monitor, it asks me if I want to shut down the computer. Not sure what changed or how to turn off the monitor now. Any ideas?

    Figured it out.
System Preferences > Displays > Display Power Button > Turns power on and off. Couldn't find it before.

  • DVI to ADC adaptor: Display power button no longer works w/G5?

I'm looking for answers on a topic originally brought up in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=221092&tstart=45
concerning the Studio Display's power button when attached to an ADC/DVI adapter for use on a G5.
I am having the same problem. I had previously used the monitor directly attached to an MDD G4, and the power button worked fine. Now that it's attached to the adapter, I can't power up the G5. The brightness button will open the Monitors prefpane, so I would say that it's not a problem with the overall USB system.
Otherwise things work fine, so it's not the end of the world, but I'd like some confirmation or denial of the problem just to know if there's a defect or not.
    TIA
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It is working normally. ADC has extra pins to support the power button and light. DVI connectors don't have these pins, so there is no way for the DVI to ADC adapter to make the power button work.

  • Cinema Display power button doesn't sleep

I retired my older 15" Studio Display after recently purchasing a 23" Cinema Display. I loved the feature on my Studio Display that the power button would automatically put my computer to sleep. With my new Cinema display when I push the power button it brings up the Shut Down, Sleep, Restart, dialogue box instead. I changed the system prefs, and it still doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?

I have the opposite problem as Michael's. Mine gives me the option to sleep, powerup JUST the diplay or do nothing. I want to be able to powerup/shutdown the whole Mac using the diplay button on the side. Checked the sys pref and nothing there. Maybe somewhere else?
    Pls help. Thanks

  • Cinema Display Power Button Not Functional

The power button on my cinema display does nothing when pressed. The other button on the display (display preferences button) does work as expected. I have confirmed that the 'Disable power button' is not selected in the display settings panel.
The button glows brighter when I press it, but nothing else happens.
I would like to be able to start up and shut down my computer with this button since my bluetooth keyboard cannot do it, and I keep my laptop shut when it is connected to the external display.
I was just given this display, so I do not know if has ever worked.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Ron,
Possibly a daft question but do have either of the Cinema Display's USB or firewire cables plugged into your G4 as well as the DVI connection? This may sound obvious but I couldn't get the buttons on my 20" ACD to work until I plugged the USB connection into my Macbook.

  • 23" HD cinema display power button with 2010 MacBook Pro

The power button on my 23" HD cinema display (clear enclosure) doesn't turn on my 2010 MacBook Pro. I don't use both screens at once much and would like to leave the laptop shut. Is there a workaround?

Thanks! I found I can also start up, close the lid (and sleep), then just click to wake the machine.

  • IPad Mini Display + Power Button Malfunctioning

HI I just got an iPad Mini (1st generation) two days ago and it was workig fine until today when I was clearing some app data in my settings, then the screen went out. I tried holding the power button to get it back, but it wouldn't work. However, I held in the home button on the bottom, and Siri still worked but I searched for something on the voice command and I couldn't bring up what it found because the display is still out. Can someone please send me options on possible ways to get the display back?  Thank you

I have noticed this same exact thing with my iPad mini with Retina display. I notice it on YouTube, but it does it for only some videos consistently. there is this game called "Don't Starve" that I watch lots of let's plays for on YouTube, and the game has an over all sepia tone to it. Whenever I first start the video, some of the colors look off, but it fades sort of to where it should be. I pinch the video closed and everything looks off *outside* of the video, like there is no contrast, but it then kind of fades back to normal. Sort of weird, not exactly sure whether it is a display problem, or if it is a kind of auto adjustment feature... I notice it NOWHERE but videos. It doesn't really bug me, and I don't mind the screen fading back to where it should be after a video, (because at least the colors do go back to normal, rather than staying washed out!) but at the same time, it does concern me because I am unsure whether this is a software feature to enhance colors in video, or if it is a display problem. I have heard the retina mini does have image retention problems (for some devices only), which means that if a particular image is left on the screen for a long time, and then it suddenly changes, you can see an after effect of the previous image for a bit, which is a screen defect. Also, the iPad mini with retina display does have a lesser color gamut than other apple devices, seen easiest when comparing it with the iPad Air, it even can be seen when comparing to an iPad 3rd generation, or iPad 4th generation. I have observed this between my iPad mini with retina and the iPod touch 5th gen, iPhone 5, and this would also be seen between the iPad mini with retina and iPhone 5S, because the iPhone 5S uses the same screen as the iPhone 5.

  • Power button on Apple Cinema Display 23"

I just got myself a used Apple Cinema Display and I have a quick question regarding the behavior of the power button. In the display options I selected "display power button : puts the computer to sleep or wakes it" but when I press the power button I get a popup saying "are you sure you want to shut down your computer".
The display is connected to a MacBook, running Snow Leopard. Is this a known issue I'm missing a setting somewhere?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Don't worry, it's normal. Since Panther, It give you more choice. Personally, I prefer that.

  • Cinema 23" Power button preference settings and Windows XP

    Here is an obscure one.
I have a Mac Pro with 10.5.6 and a Bootcamp WinXP partition.
In System / Display / Preferences ~ options, I have the "Display Power Button Behavior" set to "Does Nothing".
When I boot into Windows XP, and then back to Mac OS, the "Display Power Button Behavior" is now set to "Turns the Display on and off"
I figure that there is equivalent behavior setting for the display in Windows XP that is resetting this, but have been unable to find it.
Anyone got any thoughts on how to keep the behavior of the power button as "Does Nothing" even after being in Windows?

I downloaded the most current version of WinACD, and it sort of works but does not solve the problem.
It appears that the most recent version of WinACD does not yet have the newer Apple monitors in its list of supported ones. So the control panel will say "No monitor present".
Here is a link to another discussion on this issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8967945&#8967945
So until WinACD is updated, this is a close but no cigar solution. It should work, if it was just updated to include the newer ACD monitors.

  • Power on from 30" CD power button

My old mac would power on from it's Cinema Display power button. My new Mac Pro won't. The CPU is in a gear closet, so this is very inconvenient. Is this normal? Is there any way to remotely power on a Mac Pro? I've tried a USB keyboard with power button but no dice...

There were devices for remotely powering on PowerMacs but I don't recall who made them and I don't know if they'll work with the Mac Pro. You might consider just putting your Mac Pro to sleep instead of shutting it down.

  • No Chime, display or illuminated power button QS Dual 1 Ghz

Hi. I have a PM G4 Dual 1 Ghz. It was a great computer until about 2 years ago when it sadly stopped working. I found a broken capacitor on the motherboard (No. 820-1342-B) , so figured it was a bad MB. I replaced the board with a (No. 820-1276-A) board and had no luck. The symptoms-the same as on the new board. I purchased a tested and working board (No. 820-1342-B) and still had no luck. I am beginning to suspect a problem with my processor card or my power supply but I don't want to put any more money into it. I have tried to reset PRAM but the keyboard isn't recieving power. The symptoms: Power light when pressed in, red light on logic board, fans, hd, and optical drive work. No keyboard, display, or chime. Please help- I want to donate this computer and can't bear throwing it away

You never said if you replaced the PRAM battery.
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
For G4's and earlier models, check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject.
There are other tips in there too.

  • 17in CRT Studio Display (Blue & White)-blinking power button

I have an Apple 17in Studio Display (CRT-Blue and White vintage) connected to my Power Mac G5.
Last night, I went home, and turned it on..or rather tried to turn it on but found it stayed black, with the power button blinking green->amber->green->amber etc.
As far as the computer was concerned, the monitor was still there and working (dual monitors...the mac kept the b&w as if it was turned on).
I swapped the monitors to the different video ports and the other monitor worked fine, so it's not the video card or vga->digital adapters.
I unplugged the monitor and replugged it, and it stayed with the blinking light.
Restarting the computer with the monitor attached had the computer still running as if the monitor was working just fine, so it seems to be getting what ever kind of feedback the mac gets to let it know a video card is there.
Anyone have any idea what could be up?
