30 GB Video Ipod reports Capacity 27.8 GB, Available 27.1 GB ???

I have the 30 GB Ipod Video and when I go into Settings & click About, it says my capacity is 27.8 GB and Available is 27.1 GB. I know this is wrong because I've used almost 25 GB of space already. Why am I getting an incorrect availability number? Thanks in advance

Yes, quiet strange indeed.
This happened on my Mini. Firmware update solved it. If you are using 1.0, I suggest you update to 1.1 or newer (Is there a version newer than 1.1?).
That's about all I can say on this issue, as that's how it solved the problem on my mini. Good Luck.

  • 30gb video ipod - capacity paradox

    Hello,
I've recently bought the fith generation 30gb video ipod. It's working fine apart from a possible capacity paradox...
In the ipod section in itunes the full capacity reads 27.86GB. The capacity meter reads as follows...
    Audio 9.44GB
    Video 17.7MB
    Photos 209.6MB
    Free Space 26.44GB
If you add them all up the total is way above the possible full capacity available???
    Anyone experiencing the same thing?
    G4 + Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi there. The same thing started happening to my 60GB iPod just today. Maximum capacity is supposed to be 55.68GB and as of yesterday I had about 2GB of free space left.
When I plugged it in today I noticed a bit of a change on the bar below where it shows me what occupies what space.
    Audio: 33.63
    Video: 23.13
    Photos: 472.7
    Free Space: 18.98
It obviously doesn't add up to 55.68. At first I thought maybe stuff was missing from my iPod but I unplugged it and everything was there. I plugged it back in and it still said the same thing.
I then tried to sync more stuff with my iPod, like tv shows and music videos and they all seem to fit, even though I know that at least one of the shows is near 2GB of space, and all the shows I added should be around 5GB.
Should I be freaking out? Is this a bad thing? Should I reset it?

  • Error message when connecting 80GB Video iPod

I'm getting this error message when trying to connect my 80GB Video iPod:
"The iPod (name) cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-48)."
    Never seen this one before.
I haven't synced this iPod for a few weeks but it always behaved fine before, taking a few seconds to appear in iTunes (v7.5) then syncing perfectly when I hit the Sync button (I have it set to manually sync only because sometimes I want to change the contents or only sync music).
Before syncing on this occasion, I did an iPod software update via iTunes - iTunes said there was a newer version (1.2.3). After the update, I disconnected the iPod for a few minutes (somehting I wanted to check content before syncing), then reconnected it. At first iPod took about a minute to show up in iTunes - way too long. I Reset the iPod and tried again but still LONG delay to appear in iTunes (again about 1 minute). I did another Reset - same result. Then I did a complete Restore, after which syncing to restore the contents gave problems - it refused to finish the sync. I had to disconnect and start again, syncing the data one section per sync session - Contacts, music, videos, iCal - which seemed to work fine. Then I disconnected, waited a few minutes then reconnected the iPod to check. It wouldn't connect at all. Did a Reset, tried o connect again and it did connect but then proceeded to resync all my contacts taking almost 30 minutes (way too long) to do so (I had made NO changes in Address Book since that data was put in there). I tried to reconnect again but then got the error message (above). Did another total Restore and the same shenannigans happened. Now, I have an iPod with data on it and works fine, but iTunes won't recognise it - just gives this error message every time.
By the way, my 8GB Nano (software 1.1.3) seems to sync fine on the same system, same computer.
Could this be the 1.2.3 iPod software giving issues? I appreciate any help because I also use this iPod for recording for my work, which getting a little urgent now.
    Many thanks.

Thanks Zevoneer, but no real success. I did all that but when I tried to sync after it, it got partially through the sync (about 10% I'd guess) and presented an error message saying that the disk couldn't be read form or written to (sorry but I forgot the error number). I disconnected the iPod, waited a few minutes then reconnected and again got the message but then the ipod continued to finish the sync, even though almost all of the music and 2 of my 4 videos didn't go over to the iPod. I'm now thinking that this just isn't satisfactory reliability from the device since I use it a lot in my work and rely on it. But this new iPod is only a few months old, had very little use and only made about 12 recordings - In comparison, I've used the Nano heaps but now want to move over to the bigger one, basically for more capacity and bigger screen for video. I wonder if it's a hard drive failure in this iPod?

You'll probably get a lot of opinions with iPod cases. Sometimes they are good, sometimes people report that they actually scratch an iPod.
Some iPod cases can be found at Apple's online store:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?find=ip od+case
Be sure to click "Next" to go to the further pages to see all (or more of) the results for iPods cases.
Also, you might want to search the Discussions for suggestions with specific iPods cases; this is a question that is asked very frequently, so you might find more answers by searching the Discussions:

Sorry I can't directly suggest any specific ones, but searching for various answers on here might really be helpful.

  • 8 GB Nano vs 30 GB Video Ipod

These are the same price. I'm trying to decide which to purchase. Are their any reasons other than size that I would choose the Nano over the Video Ipod with lots of storage?
      Windows XP

The Nano is also flash based vs. a hard drive in the video models. Flash memory is much more expensive than hard drives so this is why an 8GB flash player costs the same as a much larger capacity hard drive player. The benefit to a flash player is that it has no moving parts and will likely never fail. I've seen very few comments regarding Nanos failing. The most common hardware failure on hard drive players is the hard drive.

  • Big Problem w/ Video iPod. No response. Can't restore.

For the past few days my Video iPod 60GB will not respond, will not shut off and will not restore when I follow the instructions that I have found. I recently moved my iPod from my desktop (Windows XP) to my laptop (Windows XP) and it was all working fine. I loaded some new album art and a new music video onto my laptop and later updated my iPod. It appeared fine at first. But when I tried to play the music video on my iPod the screen went dark as if loading the video and then nothing happened. And now it will not respond at all and stays at the "on" but dark screen. iTunes will not even come up when iPod is connected to laptop or desktop. I'm affraid I may have to send it back to the company. I have simply left it on the charger hopeing maybe it would sort itself out but nothing. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Is it true? You can't use video iPod as a hard drive?

I can't believe that Apple would reduce the functionality of a new product, but I have heard that due to the absence of firewire, you actually can't use the new video iPods as hard drives.
Does anyone know if this is really true?
Half the reason for buying the 60G is to be able to backup files that are too big for a DVD...

I had reported in another thread that the long and short of it is that USB2 and Firewire 1394a are virtually the same, with differences. See this website for more info than you'll need. http://www.directron.com/firewirevsusb.html
Bottom line is that there is little difference regarding speed.
    Hope this helps!

  • Video Ipod - Half Mac/Half Windows?

I have a Video Ipod that is currently formatted for the Mac. I would like to use about half the storage capacity to transfer files between Macs and PC's and the other half as my Macintosh-formatted ipod. I really don't want to format the whole thing for Windows since I rarely use Windows at home.
Is it possible to partition the ipod so that one partition is the Mac partition that iTunes sees and syncs with and the other partition is a FAT32 partition?
    thanks

I doubt you will succeed in this plan however, you can try the non-destructive partitioning software that is available. Or in theory , backup your data, use disk utility to do two partitions, one HFS and one FAT32 and see if iTunes freaks out or not, if it does, restore it. I imagine there may be some details, but in DU you can look now to see the type of partition the iPod uses, since if it is mounted it is just another drive.

  • Just got my video ipod and I may have a problem

Hey guys, I literally just got my new video ipod (80gb) and when I went to plug it in to my computer, the connector that goes into the ipod doesn't go in very easily. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but it didn't happen on my old ipod. It feels as if I'm grinding against the sides...
If this is an issue or normal please tell me. I don't want to break the thing before I use it

First question: try pushing in on the sides of the cable going into the iPod. If it is still difficult to connect make sure there is nothing impeding the connection in the iPod side or on the cable.
Second question: I've used my 5th gen iPod on many flights and have not experienced the problem and there are people who have used them in the mountains. Others are reporting problems on flights. It doesn't break the iPod, it just is resetting on them and then works again on the ground. I'm wondering if some airlines are pressurizing their cabins above the 10,000 foot level.

  • 5.5 Gen Video Ipod rebooting when trying to play certain PodCasts.

    Hi,
After enjoying an Ipod Nano for a year and loving every minute, I went ahead and purchased the new 80GB Video iPod.
Its great but it has a tendency to reboot for no apparent reason when playing certain PodCasts. For example: Its impossible to play the Buzzcast episode: BuzzCast 09/27/06 - "Microsoft protects your ****". The Ipod shuts off and reboots every time. I'm using Itunes 7.0.1 and the Ipod is running the latest available firmware.
Can anyone else who also owns the new 80GB iPod download this particular episode and confirm?
By the way, I've also noticed that even though the iPod is connected / docked with iTunes and clearly visible in the panel to the left, The message "Waiting for iPod" is displayed when trying to re-sync a while later. The only way to get iTunes to make contact with the iPod again is to physically disconnect the cable and reconnect, (even though the iPod icon was still clearly visible to the left thus indicating already established contact with the iPod) Weird!
    Anyone else having this experience?
    Input appreciated.
    Kind regards / Alex

WHAT was apple thinking when they released iTunes 7.0 and firmware 1.2!? I installed in on my 60gb Video and the whole thing went to pot.
    1. It sounded horrible
    2. It would only allow me to download about 25% of my movies to the iPod (I have a large library and I take movies on and off depending on what I feel like for the trip I am taking.)
AppleCare Support was USELESS. Here is what I finally figured out to get the pod working right again:
    1. Uninstalled iTunes 7 from my computer (PC).
    2. Went into the registry editor and deleted all remaining references to iTunes.
    3. Restored the firmware to the version that came with the iPod last January.
    4. Used the 2006.06.28 firmware updater
    5. Installed iTunes 6.0.5
It works like a charm, just like it did before Apple "made things better."
AppleCare told me that they could not support songs ripped from my CD's, or any video that had not been purchased from iTunes. I am certain that the reason for this had nothing to do with their wanting a monopoly on music and video that will work on an iPod. Then he offered to report the problem I was having to their development team.
I asked him if other people were having problems with iTunes 7. He said the question was not relevant to my problems! I pressed him more for an answer and he continued to parrot what Apple has obviously told him to say. "My new 80gb Video is working fine. I have not had the problems you are having."
    DON'T UPGRADE TO ITUNES 7!!!!
I have ordered an 80gb since he said they work so flawlessly. Reading in this discussion, it appears that plenty of new 80gb users are frustrated too.

  • Music disappeared from my ipod but still in library and on our video ipod

I turned my ipod on today and music that was on it last night has now disappeared. These are from cd's that we had copied onto the computer and then deleted once we loaded them into itunes and onto the ipod. I didnt do anything different when i plugged it in to charge. HElp please!!!

It would appear that the iPod hard drive has become corrupt and unreadable. This doesn't mean that the songs are not on your iPod, hence the fact that the iPod reports used space and iTunes may show them.
You should restore the iPod and then reload the songs from iTunes, but if they are no longer there, then you are seemingly stuck with importing the CDs again.

  • New Video iPod will not connect

I have a new video ipod that will connect on one computer but not the one I want to use. I have reloaded itunes several times and checked firewall. When I plug the ipod in the computer makes three dings. Is this an error code of some type? It will not show up in diagnostics and after trying it shuts down internet connection until computer is re-booted. It connects fine on the other computer. Has anyone got any answers? I have tried different plugs and it shows to charge just will not connect.
video   Windows XP   Sony Media Station Both computers

You want to check and see if the other computer has usb 2.0 first.
If it does try to reset the ipod while it is plugged into the computer. Reset is the menu and the center button on the ipod. Also make sure the hold switch is all white.
Also you want to make you that you try different usb ports.
If that doesn't work use msconfig type that into the search here on the support page let me know if this works.
