30gb iPod Video freezes

Could someone please help me, or tell me if this is 'normal'?
I bought a 30bg iPod Video about 10 days ago. I installed the software on my computer...reset the iPod when I first plugged it in. Loaded up about 750 songs and about 35 pics.
The thing is, EVERYTIME I go running (basically every time I use it) it freezes. The play icon is still on the screen, but the song is not playing. Sometimes it happens in the middle of the song, sometimes before the song starts. (By the way, I always have the iPod on shuffle...does this make a difference?)
Saturdat morning, I had to reset it 3 times!!!!
The battery seems to run down fairly quickly, as well.
Have I done something wrong, or did I get a bad unit.
Help!

So what the support guy says is fairly true. The video has a hard drive and a small RAM buffer. The nano is all RAM. Hard drive's don't like being moved around and if the video is reading the hard drive at the time, it's going to skip and potentially freeze.
See iPod : Maximizing skip protection
and Troubleshooting songs that skip on iPod
So if you're using a playlist with any videos on it, that's really bad (cause videos eat up a lot of the RAm buffer).
But if you have long songs that can aggravate the situation too.
Best option is to get a nano or a shuffle if you want to run. If you want to try staying with the video and run, position it somewhere that minimizes motion (a fanny back or belt clip may help) or higher up on the arm for an armband.
Oh, I just read your bit about having it on shuffle - yes that is bad. When it's not on shuffle it will read as much o the playlist as it can into RAM. When it's on shuffle, it doesn't know what the next songs are going to be. Even with shuffle off, manually changing songs repeatedly can have a similar effect. Just build a playlist you like and run with it.

  • Only certain purchased videos locking up 30GB iPod video

What causes certain videos to lock up my 30GB iPod video, but not others? All the videos I have are either purchased or free podcast downloads; All from iTunes.
I transfer the files all the same way to my iPod, by clicking and dragging the file to my iPod in iTunes.
Some play all the way through without an issue.
Some start at the beginning and then lock up after 10 or 15 seconds and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
Others start playing right in the middle of the video and then after playing for about 10 or 15 second, it locks up and I have to reset my iPod because it won't let me do anything else.
I performed the 5 R's, no luck. I checked out and compared the file properties between one of the files that plays and one of the ones that don't. They're identical.
I'm bummed because I'm paying for videos that I have to watch on my PC, not on my iPod. So what might be causing this problem?
HP 1.9GHz Intel Pentium 4   Windows XP   30GB iPod video with software version 1.2 and iTunes version 7.0.1

I have the same problem; at least there's more than one out there. One of the videos I downloaded eventually began to work (I'm not sure why) but it kept freezing up and the audio had horrible static. (When I played it on the computer through the ipod, it worked fine.)
I cannot find an article on this site that explains what to do about that problem and apparently you can't simply send an email to a tech support center to ask about it. I guess I'll have to bring it to a store...

  • 30GB iPod Video Prevents ASUS A7N8X-X Mobo from Completing POST

    Greetings,
I've owned my iPod for about a week now, but it seems to have a little bit of an issue with nForce 2 based ASUS A7N8X-X motherboards, specifically in regards to the fact that if the iPod is connected to the PC during boot, the motherboard will not complete its POST and the boot is aborted. Where the POST aborts isn't consistent, but the majority of the time, it will abort on or before the CPU diagnostic. If I disconnect the iPod and then reset the system, the motherboard completes its POST as it normally would.
I was wondering if there were any other users who have experienced this. I have the current generation 30GB iPod Video and I'm using the dock cable that was included in the package.
    Thanks.

    Anything to do with this?

  • 30gb Ipod video on/off problem

For some strange reason my ipod does not want to turn off. I can let the battery die out and then charge it and then use it again, but if i wanted to simply turn it off after i stop using it. doesn't work. my play button works fine, pauses and continues playing fine, but when i hold the play button down, nothing happens. Anyone heard of this happening or know how to fix it?

Yes, iTunes is up to date, and has been installed properly -no problems at all.
There was (and is) no cell phone around my iPod. The volume didn't change on its own - but for me it was a bit loud, so I wanted to change the limit, so that I wouldn't go too far..and then this problem happened. There were I think about 200 photos, and they were uploaded through iTunes (this volume limit problem was there before I uploaded the photos though.) And I am manually uploading songs - I always did, on my old iPod too, since I go between 2 computers.

  • Earlier Issue with 30Gb Ipod Video

Hey, I have a 5th generation 30Gb Ipod video. I recently went out and bought a new 2.0 USB port for a PCI slot for my Ipod since I only had a 1.1 before that.
Well my problem is, I had it plugged in last night and it had the do not disconnect screen on the ipod for about an hour, so I pulled it out without ejecting it, and later on it said that windows said that the device was not able to be identified and was malfunction try unplugging it and plugging it back in, I did that and it still would work, so I restarted my PC and got it to work, then about a hour later I was uploading some photos and it gave me the same message, so I just turned off my PC and went to bed as it was getting late.
This morning when I woke up I thought maybe it was just the port so I unplugged and plugged it back into a different 2.0 port since I got 4 with that card I bought, I then left for school and came back to find that my Ipod is working like nothing happened since I changed it's port.
I just want to know if I should pull out that warrenty card and get a new one or if that message was just because the one port could recognize something was there, but not able to tell what device it is.

  • 30GB iPod Video battery Issue?

I have noticed a problem with my 30GB iPod Video recently. I've had it for about 1 and a half years now with no problems until now.
I think the battery may be on its last legs as it seems to discharge a lot sooner than it used to (i.e. fully charged Monday, by Wednesday its displaying "very low bat warning" upon sync - and that's with hardly any use!). Even on the Apple Support site (here:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60970) there's a page stating that it should take up to 2 weeks to discharge! This has happened the last 3 times i've synced and charged it!
Is this a sign that the battery is on its way to battery heaven (or ****)?

The symptoms do match a bad battery. Also, from what I've seen on the forum, a year-and-a-half is about normal (obviously depending on usage).

  • 30GB iPod Video Screen Replacement

I have a fifth generation 30GB iPod Video and it's really scratched up.
It's weird because it was in a hard case and they both got scratched, but it's like it was with sandpaper...well that doesn't matter.
Ok, so it's scratched a was on eBay looking at iPod accesories (cheaper there) and there were these iPod screen replacements that came with a tool and manual too. It's $15 so I was gonna get it but does anyone know if that's just junk and if it will mess up my iPod because now I can only watch videos when I'm in a dim room. It's really annoying and I need someone's help. Thanks! ^_^

no, i never broke my LCD screen but i had a friend that broke her nano and she sent it here and got it back with no problems..just a new LCD screen!

  • Contemplating purchase of 30GB iPod Video. Opinions?

Let me start off by saying that I'm not happy with Apple at the moment. My iPod mini just died on me after only 1 year of useage and Apple refused to help me out in any way because the warranty was 2 WEEKS past due. As a customer and lifelong advocate of the Apple brand, this really angers me. Especially since all in all I've spent over $15,000 on apple products.
Anyways... with that aside I need something else. And if I could sync another player with iTunes the way i can with an iPod I wouldn't even consider one. But I can't. So here I am.
I just want some opinions on the new 30GB iPod video from people who actually own one. Both good and bad. Let me hear it all. I couldn't bear plunking down over $400 for another player that's just going to quit on me in 1 year.
    Thanks for your help.

I've only had mine for a month, but it's still working perfectly.
There's a couple things I've found dissappointing about it.
First off, while I've found the video quality to be good, the battery life when watching videos is absurdly low. 2 hours of watching videos will completely drain the battery. 2 hours. So there's a good number of movies out there that you couldn't watch all the way through.
Plus, while it's nice that you can download TV shows, like The Office, through iTunes, just watching a few of them will drain the battery significantly. Kind of lame that the new video feature is so weak in this regard. Though I bought it mostly for music, so it's not that big of a deal to me.
Secondly, I find it unbelieveable that the thing doesn't come with a AC charger that you can plug into a wall socket. Yeah, it'll charge through your computers USB port, but if you want the ability to charge it through a standard outlet you have to buy the charger seperately for $25. Pretty lame if you ask me.

  • Ipod Video Freezes

Hi everyone I'm just wondering how to fix my ipod.
I know someone just put up a post just like it
I just got the new update for my 60GB Ipod Video. Before the update it was fine the videos played normally but now my videos will play normally for about 30seconds then freeze then play but without any sound.
I don't know what happened, was it the update? or do I just need to do something?
    Thanks for the help!
    Dell   Windows XP

This solution has worked to stop this from happening:
    The solution is:
    1) Open up the Video file in Quicktime Pro
    2) Select File->Export
    3) Select "Movie to MPEG-4" beside "Export:", then click the OPtions button
    4) Select "Video" and make sure that the "Video Format" is set to "Pass through"
    5) Do the same for "Audio", then hit OK
    6) Save the file
Basically what this does is rewrites the MPEG-4 "container" that the video is stored in. It seems that the iPod with the 1.1 firmware has a problem with the container as created by Videora and other programs. By simply rewriting the container, the videos play fine. This process can take up to a minute or two depending on the size of the file, but still MUCH faster than straight-up encoding via Quicktime Pro.
The other solution is to reconvert the file using other software that doesn't cause this problem. So far others have reported that the Nero Recode converted files have not caused this to happen while playing movies on the iPod.

  • 30GB Ipod skipping/freezing

My 30Gb ipod is having a meltdown. It's decided that it doesn't want to play songs anymore. It can get 10seconds into a song then it starts to freeze up have trouble then skip to the next song and do the same thing. Sometimes it will get half way through a song before it does it or if i'm lucky it will actually play a whole song. I'm not sure how to fix this I'm thinking about doing a restore to factory settings. I did this last year when I had a different but equally serious problem. But I want to see if I can get more information before doing this as it's a last resort.

Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
    1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
    2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
    3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
    4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

  • I need help with my 30gb ipod video

I just got one this weekend and i used the new itunes 7 to convert about 23 videos and then i put them on my ipod. When I try watch any of them I only see video and dont hear anythnig. I know my head phones work because I can listen to my music that i put on it.
is there a step or something im missing?

The file is most likely an MPEG (.mpg) file. The audio and video tracks are merged.
If you use iTunes or QuickTime Pro to convert it, it will only convert the video track and remove the audio.
I recommend getting an MP4 Converter program.
Xilisoft iPod Video Converter is great, you can get it for both Mac OS X and Windows.

all of the sudden after a month of having my ipod video, it wont turn off
any idea what to do? will resetting it even help??
it plays music just fine and nothing wrong with the connection to my computer

Like the guy said, different levels. You only have to hold down Pause, and then the system goes into Sleep mode. The problem is that you probably moved your finger when the button was pressed. Don't. Keep your finger still on the button. This happened to me oh so many times
Otherwise, add a Sleep item to your Main Menu. Hold down Menu for a few seconds to go back to the Main Menu. Go to Settings > Main Menu. Scroll down to "Sleep", and turn it on. Now go back to the Main Menu, and choose the Sleep option.
