3TB HDD, GPT, EXT4 HPA enabled, [SOLVED]
I started my HTPC as usual, only to be greeted with "movie share" not found. I was suprised, looking at console, it seemed the kernely suddently stopped looking for my HDD.

I've read this guide: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/h2-fix-msdos-pt.php
Thanks to iranshaksi on IRC, very friendly and kind fellow. But i'm still puzzled what to do.
It's a fresh HDD, couple of weeks old, seagate 3TB, partioned with GPT/EXT4. I have over 300GB stored of PERSONAL video files on this HDD.
Please is there away at all to get access to my files? I just want to transfer the files I have on the hdd onto another one.
And perhaps re-partion this HDD. How can a hdd just stop working like this?
Is there a "magical" way i'm suppose to partition a 3TB hdd? My other 3TB works just fine. I'm quite puzzled here gentlemen

Post the output of `lsblk -f` In the future, you might want to consider using labels or UUIDs for mounting since drive letters can change if you add/remove a device or if something changes in the BIOS, etc. Labels are better in my opinion because you name them whereas UUIDs are meaningless to the user.
Yes sir, it's the only HDD that refuses to mount. Tried it on my other linux box as well.

Yeah I usually rely on UUID, but I had to make a fresh arch install, that's why they are using deviceid instead of uuid.
Thank You

How to Install Win7 on a 3TB hdd using GPT
Hi!
I'd like to change the HDD of my Thinkcentre Edge 72 from the original 500GB to a 3TB HDD.
Can please somebody tell me, how I can install the original Win7 Pro levnovo version (with the recovery DVDs) back on the new HDD (partitioned in GPT)?
Many thanks in advance!
Bye
Chris
Solved!
Go to Solution.I thought I would post a reply to this older thread as there is a new tip released from our engineering that might apply. I don't believe capacity points of the drive are a key factor here as much as GPT not working with Win 7 and the recovery DVDs.
The system is installed with the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. When using the Recovery disc set to restore the system to the factory-default settings, when selecting the GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition style, the system cannot be restarted after the Recovery process finishes. As a result, the system cannot be restored to the factory-default settings.
This happens because the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) of the system does not support the GPT partition style on the Windows 7 operating system. To solve this issue, select the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition style to restore the computer to factory-default settings.
Best regards,
Mark

AMD storage controller problems with a 3tb HDD
I recently bought a Seagate 3tb HDD to use as extended / secondary storage. It seems that AMD has not updated its storage controller to recognize >2tb yet. I cannot find drivers for my chipset anywhere at least. And it seems that noone running an AMD chipset is upgrading HDD's past 2tb? I know Intel came out with an update for their controller that fixed this problem. Is anything available for the AMD controller like this?
Hp Pavilion HPE H8-1214
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
AMD FX-6100 6 core processor
10 Gigs Ram
Gigabyte 2AC8 Mothermoard
AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series Gfx
1465GB Seagate ST1500DL003-9VT1 SCSI Disk Device (RAID) Primary (HP installed)
2930GB Seagate ST3000DM001-1CH1 SCSI Disk Device (RAID) Secondary (the problem drive)
Gigabyte has no mention of this Motherboard existing on their support site.
AMD has nothing about their Storage Controllers on theirs.
I can see all 3tb in Disk Management, but i cannot partition past 2.2tb. The last 746.52Gb will be unusable.
AMD AHCI compatible RAID Controller driver version is 3.3.1545.14 and Microsoft says that it is the most up-to-date
Any help with this would be great. Thanks!
This question was solved.

That would be all the help I can offer because I don't know why all 3 TB of the drive can't be seen in one big partiton unless you didn't format it in GPT.
In order for all 3 TB to be seen in one partition, the drive has to be formatted in GPT.

3TB HDD installed in HP S5360f Need BIOS Update
The original drive crashed and I replaced it with a Toshiba 3TB HDD. Now the system will boot up and run for a bit, but then freezes. The OS and the system setup screens both only recognize the new 3TB drive as being 800GB. Other support forums state that I need to update the BIOS, but I cant find it on the HP site.
What's the best way to proceed from here?
DattGuyDattGuy, welcome to the forum.
Here is a guide for running 3 TB hard drives with Win 7. Also, here is a BIOS update for the computer. It will not address the problem that you are experiencing, however.

Does hp dc7900 support booting from 3tb hdd?
does hp dc7900 minitower support booting from 3tb hdd?
Hi:
Probably not.
In order to be able to boot from a 3 TB HDD, you need:
1. A UEFI BIOS, which I do not believe the dc7900 has.
There is a picture (see page 5 at the link below) of the HP splash screen for an HP business desktop that has a UEFI BIOS. If your HP splash screen doesn't look like the one in the picture, then you will not be able to boot from a 3 TB HDD.
2. A GPT-formatted hard drive.

No, that won't work as that requires a UEFI bios and GPT format which is both not possible with your old board just supporting classic bios. You won't be able to access the entire drive space which makes a (costly) 3TB HDD quite useless.
Better just get nothing above a 2TB HDD.
Connection won't change that. -
Canvio 3TB HDD not recognized by other Devices
I am trying to connect this Canvio 3TB HDD to my Samsung TV and its not recognized. Tried connecting to the Samsung BRDVD player, not recognized. These devices recognize other HDD's but not this one. Any suggestions?
Yes, that should be fine. It would just operate slower usually. Do your devices recognize other drives that have that large of a capacity? Perhaps they can't see it because 3 TB is more than they support. I don't know for sure though. You may always want to contact Samsung.

Regarding a 3,5" HDD for an iMac, 27", 3,06 GHz Processor, EMC Number 2309. It was shiped with a 1TB SEAGATE Barracuda 7200 RPM drive. I would like to ask if the following HDD 3.0TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA 64MB Cache 6Gb/s HDD would fit into my iMac.
Hi,
no, the 3TB HDD did not work. The iMac did not recognise the 3 TB HDD - if I remember correctly (it was a long time ago!) the iMac only recognised 640 GB. I exchanged it for a 2 TB Seagate HDD with thermal pins. BUT - that's Apple for you - it did not have the Apple firmware. So the iMac booted, worked well - for about 10 minutes and then the HDD fan went on full blast, obviously creating a lot of noise. The only work-around solution was HDD Fan Control Version 2.4 - downloaded from http://www.hddfancontrol.com. After installation, the iMac ran smoothly without noise pollution.
Since then I have changed to another iMac with a SSD (250 GB) and a HDD (2 TB), 16 GB RAM. The machine is so wonderfully fast that I am not even interested in looking at the newer iMacs, which would be so expensive in comparison with the iMac that I have.
I hope it helped. Nice hearing from you after such a long time.
Kind regards.
PS I hope Apple will not censor this posting. -
I'm new to archlinux and this will be my first install. I use Debian and Kubuntu, but I'm no expert. I've read many archlinux docs (and they *are good*, congatulations), but I couldn't find specifics to what I want to do.
My system is a desktop box (6GB RAM) that I use for video editing, compiling, browsing and many other unrelated things. What I plan to do is to organize things in the following way:
SSD (60GB): first disk (for a fast boot up time) with only one partition, ext4
/ and everything, except for /home and /var
HDD (3TB): second disk with only one partition, ext4
Mounted as /something
Symlinks (or bind mounts) to /var and /home
My reason to use only one partition for / and one for /home and /var is to not have to worry about balancing partition sizes among system files, user files, web server files, etc.
Could you please comment on the following:
1) It seems that I can't use a a regular partition larger than 2.2TB, so I will have to use GPT. Do I need (or is it recommended) to partition both disks with GPT? Does it work with non EFI BIOSes? Can I use a regular GRUB2 install?
2) What is the recommended way of installing arch using this set up? Do I install everything under the SSD and later move /var and /home to the HDD?
3) What is the best way to have the complete final root file system: using symlinks, bind mounts, or any other technique?
4) I deal with huge files and sometimes huge pictures and huge memory needs (Blender 3D, GIMP and Inkscape with huge files, radiosity rendering, etc). I've read that a swap partition is not needed nowadays. So I was thinking of creating just a swap file inside the HDD partition. Would it degrade too much the HDD performance or fragmentation? Could it be used for hibernation?
5) Can I use the regular arch install procedure to accomplish all that or do i have to prepare anything before/after?
6) Any other tips?
Thanks

According to wikipedia, linux has no problem booting from GPT on BIOS, and accordind to archwiki, GRUB2 provides the ability to boot from GPT in both BIOS and UEFI based systems.. I dont think that formating both disk with GPT is necessary, but I am not sure.

I would install with this approach.

In this setup (/var and /home on one big partition), I would use symlinks.

This says Google about swap file/partition performance. You could use hibernation. I allways go with swap partition, but nowadays it is just proforma, because I have enough memory to never use swap.

I think (but I'm not sure, though) parted is on installation media. -
[SOLVED] How do I increase the size of an existing GPT ext4 partition?
I found some advice here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1389429
but I'm not sure whether the information is correct
1 Run parted on your device: parted /dev/sdX
2 Change display unit to sectors: unit s
3 Print current partition table and note the start sector for your partition: p
4 Delete your partition (won't delete the data or filesystem): rm <number>
5 Recreate the partition with the starting sector from above: mkpart primary <start> <end>
6 Exit parted: quit
7 Check the filesystem: sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdXX
8 Resize filesystem: sudo resize2fs /dev/sdXX
I'd like to increase partition #2 from 200 Gig to 300 Gig using gnu parted.

From the wiki gparted topic:
GParted is a GTK+ frontend to GNU Parted and the official GNOME Partition Editor application.
I think gparted can do anything gnu parted can do. The warning about ext4 in the topic you linked is from 2009, and recommends using gparted with a version higher than 0.6.2-2. Gparted 0.14.0-1 is currently in the Arch repo, so I think it's probably safe.

K8NGM2 Long boot with Nvidia RAID enabled *SOLVED*
Hi,
I just bought the K8NGM2 and first had the engineering bios... i upgraded to version 3.10 without any problems.
After I setup my RAID array The computer will boot, get past the RAID press f10 screen and get stuck at "Checking NVRAM" for about (timed) at 60 seconds!
That's a really long time! First couple of times I thought the computer had froze. After 60 seconds it will continue booting normally.
Is there any reason why enabling raid causes this to take so long to boot? I've had previous raid 0 setups and nothing took this long to boot.
Also, my HDD on this completely new computer is two Western Digital Caviar WD2500SD 250gb RE drives on SATA cables 1 and 2. The raid array is also
setup up correctly, striped for raid 0.
This is really frustrating because i really like this motherboard. Unfortunately I'm not sure what to do!SOLVED
Sigh, computers really throw you for a loop sometimes!
I had my Plextor DVD-RW set as master on IDE 1, NO slave (no second drive)
I also had my Benq DVD-ROM set as master on IDE 2, NO slave (no second drive)
Both were on separate cables.
After disconnecting both i the computer booted normally even with RAID enabled.
I found out that setting two masters on two cables on the IDE controller would cause the computer to hang for at least 60 seconds.
SOLUTION:
Use The Plextor as Master, and the Benq as the Slave on ONE IDE cable.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION 2:
Set the Plextor and Benq as Cable Select if using separate cables.
Boots very quickly now. Hope this helps. -
SSD + HDD, GPT & MBR dual boot.
Hi all,
I ordered my first SSD the other day and it is expected to arrive tomorrow. I current have a 500 GB HD that I dual boot Arch/Win 7. I was wondering the following:
It is possible to to put /boot, /var and my NTFS on the HDD with standard MBR, and install /, /home, and swap on my SSD with GPT? If so how might I go about doing that? If not, I can put /boot on my ssd as I don't believe it gets written to often. If I do that is it possible to dual boot a MBR drive from a GPT drive?
Also I am slightly confused about the UEFI section. I know my motherboard is "UEFI" but I don't know how to tell if it is in BIOS mode, or UEFI mode. Basially this is my first new computer if 5 years and a ton has changed
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the links.
In reference to https://gitorious.org/tianocore_uefi_du … I_boot_USB:
mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/[USB_DEVICE] should read: mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/[USB_FAT32_PART] correct? Just staying with convention of the rest of the wiki entry? It wouldn't make sense to format the device as FAT32, only the partition correct?
Minor issue.
Also, I am not sure step 4.2 or 4.3 are needed when for archboot seeing all the files already seem to be there.
ldlinux.sys version (installed by extlinux) should match the c32 and other syslinux modules in (USB)/boot/syslinux, otherwise syslinux will refuse to boot.
Hmm, I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I keep getting an "Operating system not found" error. I will have to keep playing with this, and see if I can figure it out.
May be due to the above reason, but not sure, since "Operating system not found" error is mostly from the BIOS (atleast in systems I have used), not from syslinux. -
I have the new 3TB WD green, like external HDD, in housing LC power LC PRO-35BE3

Record old VHS to HDD with Hauppauge HD PVR [Solved]
Video is fine but there is no sound. The best I can get is a scratching noise from the recording. There is nothing wrong with the equipment. I have both sound and video in windows. I tried 'cat /dev/video1 > video.mp4' and 'mplayer /dev/video1' and cat with a pipe to ffmpeg and my latest command is 'ffmpeg -i /dev/video1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -bsf:a aac_adtstoasc Krou.mp4'. I have the latest firmware in my hdpvr and a two days old install of Arch.
Edit! I found out that my hdpvr still outputted audio thru the RCA-port on the back, so just switching the audiocables to the back solved it.
