  • Internet Explorer 9 not showing as not installed when using Windows Update - Error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I built a few new Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 VMs today and ran into a problem where Windows Update is not detecting the fact that Internet Explorer 9 is already installed. Internet Explorer 9 keeps showing up as an available update when
using Windows Update. When I try to install it as a test I get the error message: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
My normal build procedures include applying all the patches for the OS prior to any other work on the servers. The way I like to do the patching is to do every update other then IE9 in the begininng and once all the other updates have been
completed, install IE9 and then patch it if there are updates available. I followed this procedure on every build for the last year and I have not run into any issues until today. The only difference today is the latest patches that were released yesterday
April 10th, 2012. To test the theory that it may be one of the latest patches, I reinstalled Windows from scratch making sure to format the disks and then I installed IE9 right after the OS install without any other updates. Once the
server was rebooted, I checked Windows Update and Internet Explorer 9 still showed up as update (Not the Cumulative Update which normally shows up after an IE9 install) and yes, I did make sure to click the 'Check for Updates' link before I looked just
in case. My next test was to patch a couple of the servers I had built prior to April 10th, 2012. Those servers did not have any issues with the latest updates and they are not experiencing the same behavior as the newly built servers.
I ended up comparing the IE9 Version on the cleanly install OS (No updates were installed except IE9) and the servers I built last week which were patched. The versions are exactly the same.
My findings above lead me to believe that there is a problem with the latest IE9 install package (which includes the latest cumulative update) and the Windows Update detection component.
I guess I am looking for someone to report this up the chain to get this fixed so no one else runs into this problem. I know in some cases we may not be able to see additional IE9 updates until this is resolved.

I just started having the same problem.
I was creating a new VM in Vsphere from our 2008 R2 SP1 image and it hasn't been updated and repacked in a while, so i have to install about 60 updates, including IE9.
I went through my normal setup as i had just created 2 VMs and updated them on Monday with no problem.
I got the same error code as you. The install looks like it installed IE9, but the update is still showing up as available in Windows Update.
I deleted the VM, created a new one, chose all updates except IE, then did that and it still shows up again.
Then i deleted the VM, installed just IE 9 and it still shows up as available on reboot.
I have a script that i can use to reset/clear WSUS cache on the computer, (Software distribution folder, and the windows update log, and recreates a certificate), so i tried that and then rebooted and it still showed up.
I then decide ok, maybe the Image got messed up somehow, so i started creating a new 2008 R2 install from scratch last night and chose to update just IE9 as the first install. I did that, rebooted and it didn't show up in Windows Updates, so i though GREAT.
I proceed to kick off the 100+ downloads needed before i left and left the console up.
When i got in to work this morning, the updater seemed stuck on 31 of 102 updates, this one in particular: KB288516. I rebooted the computer, because it wouldn't stop and just seemed stuck since last night, which these updates should only have taken about
an hour to install at most. I log back in and sure enough, it now shows Internet Explorer 9 at the bottom of the update list as being needed for install.
I believe this is Patch Tuesday week, so maybe they screwed up something with the Windows Update detection engine, because it worked fine on Monday when i had to update IE9 on 2 VMs that i created.

When I updated to iOS 8.1 on my iPad 2 it failed when installing it's in recovery mode and when I go to iTunes to restore it downloads the update to about 900 Mbps then gives me error 9006

    Hi Willy,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article below provides information about specific update and restore alerts, including the 9006 alert that you saw when attempting to update your iPad 2 to iOS 8.1. Try using the instructions provided to see if the issue is caused by a conflict with the security software on your computer.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.
    I hope this helps,
    -Jason

  • AnyConnect 3.1.01065 error - Failed to install AnyConnect VPN Profile because of file move error. A VPN connection cannot be established.

    I've got a user running:
    AnyConnect 3.1.01065
    on
    Windows 7 64bit.
Several weeks ago she started encountering the following error:
-after logging into Windows and launching the AnyConnect client, she enters her username and password and successfully authenticates.
-the connection is not established and she's presented with the following message: "Failed to install AnyConnect VPN Profile because of file move error. A VPN connection cannot be established."
After doing some troubleshooting, inlcuding uninstalling/reinstalling the anyconnect client, it seems the culprit is the following file:
C:\ProgramData\Cisco\Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client\Profile\<filename>.xml. When the problem occurs (which is not regularly, sometimes it occurs daily, sometimes just once a week) examining that file indicates it has no security or permissions set. Quitting the AnyConnect software, modifying the file so that the user has full control of it, then relaunching AnyConnect fixes the problem (until it happens again). Uninstalling, and making sure to move C:\ProgramData\Cisco to the trash, then reinstalling did not seem to help.
The closest match in these forums is the following thread, https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3760446 - though no clear resolution was given.
Has anyone else encountered this, and been able to fix it?
    Thanks much.

Just FYI, it seems at least in this case, purging all the previous system restore points seems to have resolved this issue...

  • The iPod (bla bla bla) cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (-208)

I am gettign strange errors, to which I can find no explination, solutions or even a mention of. Upon syncing my iPod nano with iTunes 7.0.2 I get an error "The iPod (bla bla bla) cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (-208)"
There is an Apple error code for -208:
-208 badFileFormat File is corrupt or unusable, or not AIFF or AIFF-C
It then syncs the music correctly, but not the photos or the contacts. When setting the contacts to be updated, iTunes says "No Contacts available. Open Address Book and create contacts?" Address Book is full of cantact and has been for years.
    The system log has:
    2007-01-12 01:21:01.012 iTunes[506] CFLog (0):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed; the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:

The parser will retry as in 10.2, but the problem should be corrected in the plist.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution?

I hope APLLE will work so hard to come up with better version of itune 7 soon!

  • Can't copy music to ipod ("cannot be updated... unknown error (-50)"

Well, the last month has been pretty much a nightmare with my beloved ipod (60gb with video, and I'm using a Powerbook G4).
My immediate problem is this: after transferring about half of my music onto my ipod (which I'm doing from scratch, because of another issue that will come up later in the post), I got an error message saying "The ipod 'Disco Stu II' cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)." I click ok, and am stuck here. I cannot eject my ipod - when I try to, I am told that "it contains files that are in use by another application" - although I'm not running any other programs (except, currently, Firefox). When I click "ok" to that, the first error message recurs. When I close itunes and move the ipod icon from my desktop to the trash, I get a message saying that the disk is in use and could not be ejected. Relaunching Finder doesn't change this. Reopening itunes, nothing changes. It's possible that if I restart the computer, I'll be able to eject the ipod, but this also seems like it might end up doing more damage.
The larger problem: this type of thing has been happening often recently. A few weeks ago, I was copying music from an external hard drive onto my ipod, when itunes suddenly quit. I don't remember all of the details, but I got a message saying the ipod couldn't be read or written to. I said ok, ejected the ipod, and to my horror found that it was now empty. When I plugged it back in, itunes gave me a single option to restore the ipod. I called AppleCare, who walked me through an alternate version of restoring (unfortunately, I don't remember the details here either). I was then able to put music back on my ipod, and for a few weeks it worked okay. But last night I had my ipod plugged into my laptop's usb for charging, and while my back was turned another error message (I think this was another "cannot be updated"), and again I was stuck with a single "restore" option, so once again, I had no music on my ipod. Which is why I'm trying to refill it now, without much luck.
Other possibly relevent stuff: earlier tonight, while my ipod wasn't connected, itunes caused a kernel panic. I thought (hoped) that this meant my copy of itunes was the problem, so I trashed my copy (as well as my itunes preferences... but are there other things that I should also be trashing?) and downloaded and installed a new version. Apparently this wasn't the solution, since the immediate problem happened after I installed the new version.
Any help appreciated. This is the kind of thing that makes me want to cry, or throw things.
    Adam

Update: I restarted the computer and, surprisingly, itunes could read my ipod and was able to transfer music to it. I still received one or two of the "unknown error" messages while transferring the rest of my music (carefully, less than 100 songs at a time). However, I'm still unable to eject my ipod either through itunes or finder. I was only able to do it by restarting again. Knock on wood, the situation seems tolerable now, but I expect to be living in fear that my ipod will stop working for the next few weeks. Any wisdom would be appreciated. thanks!

  • I cannot install iTunes on Windows 7 I receive the Error 7 (Windows Error 193).

I cannot install iTunes on Windows 7 I receive the Error 7 (Windows Error 193).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times but with no luck.  Does anyone have another option?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the above steps haven't helped try installing:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for a 32-bit core program, similar to previous 64-bit releases of iTunes.
    Or roll back to:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)
    as appropriate.

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
    download iTunes again from Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.
Windows is notorious for having "other" issues that make it unstable, we as volunteers helping others can't always resolve those issues.

  • The iPod " " could not be updated. An unknown error has occurred (1417).

This is what saved my day... I copied this from a longer reply.
"Try this: I got error 1417. The iPod "Dan's iPod" could not be updated. An unknown error has occurred (1417).
1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing "Do Not Disconnect" message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes
5)That's it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status."
The only thing I would add, restart your computer with the IPOD left connected. When it starts back up you are set.

    Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 1000, and 9006
Follow the steps to troubleshoot security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. An incorrectly set default packet size can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
