4 Nano Connection Questions

I have an old 20GB iPod w/dock connector (the one with the 4 buttons above the click wheel). The dock came with both a USB 2.0 cable and a firewire cable. I've been using the firewire cable, although I think I can find the USB cable that came with it.
I just got a new 3rd gen Nano. I haven't opened the box yet (it's a gift), but I understand that it comes with a USB 2.0 cable.
Questions:
1. Will the Nano fit in the old dock?
2. Can the Nano connect using firewire rather than USB, and if so, will it charge (the old iPod charges OK through the firewire connection)?
3. If a firewire connection will work, but the Nano won't fit in the dock, will the old firewire cable connect to the Nano?
4. The Nano specs say "USB 2.0". Other than slower transfer speed, will Nano work with a USB 1.0 port or is a USB 2.0 port required?

I think I've found the answer to one of my questions.
The firewire-to-dock cable will work to charge Nano, but not for sync. That suggests that the firewall cable will connect directly to Nano, and probably also that the Nano will fit in the dock, but that can be easily determined once I unpack Nano.

  • BIG nano connection problem

    I got my iPod Nano delivered today & after it finished charging I installed the software that is on the CD.
    My problem is that when i connect my Nano using the USB cable it doesn't show that it is connected in iTunes or My Computer or the iPod for Windows software update which means I can't choose to restore the Nano but my PC does make a ringing-type noise everytime i connect it.
    What is the problem with it? When you install the software do you have to format the iPod? Because when it says to connect it to check if it does need formatting nothing happens so i clieck on the box to not check & carry on to install the software & have my songs added to the iTunes library. I have done this 2 or 3 times but still can't find out how to make my Nano connected so i can finally download my songs onto it!
    I remember when i first connected the iPod a Windows message popped up saying 'found new device ipod' & said connect to internet to find updates for it to which i clicked on no. Then when i tried again later it said 'found new device Mass USB Device' & this time i clicked on the Windows message to find updates & it said something like aborted could not be done.
    Can you please help me with this? I'm only 16 & have saved up for this & don't want it to be a waste of money!
    Thanks hope this makes sense because I'm really tired!

    I recieved my ipod nano and for 2 glorious days it worked. Then my pc could no longer detect it, it just said "malfunctioned usb device" and didnot appear in itunes. The Nano just has the menu as opposed to the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" screen
    After a long and arduous day i managed to fix the problem.
    By clicking on this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 it tells you how to fix it.
    i just did this - (with the ipod connected to the pc)
    1) turn hold on, and then off,
    2)then press menu and the center select button simultaiously for 6 seconds
    3)the apple logo appears
    4)then it goes back to the menu briefly, and then goes to the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" screen
    5)open itunes, wait a minute and your nano will appear
    Wahooooo!
    hope this helps everyone!

  • Booting Win2k w/nano connected disabled ps/2 mouse

    I recently purchased a 4gb nano and installed the software that came on the CD as well as downloaded the latest iTunes.
    My problem is that if I have the nano connected via USB when I boot my computer, my ps/2 mouse is not detected. I must disconnect the nano and reboot my computer in order to be able to use the mouse again.

    What does it mean: " use both keyboard & mouse"? I can use them, everything is fine, but the boot..
    And I have this bug for ages. I know an other guy who has this error. So I think this is a bug in this type of mobo, not an error in mine.

  • Windows won't start with Nano connected

    My computer won't startup or restart with the nano connected to the USB port. It just hangs on the startup screen. I have to disconnect the nano and do a hard power off and then power up again then connect the nano after computer is started. Everything works OK then. Is this normal? Using Dell 8500 laptop with XP Pro sp 2.

    I have the same (or similar) problem with an iPod Video 30GB, and have found a solution. It is not a boot order problem. I've just posted the following as feedback to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93953
    There is also another reason why a PC may not start with an iPod connected. It is also related to USB, but is a different problem, and there are different work-arounds available.
    Problem: PC will not POST or boot with iPod connected to a USB port
    Description:
    With an iPod connected to any USB port, the PC will not pass power-on self test (POST), and does not attempt to boot. It remains completely unresponsive to anything except a hard power-off; in particular it is impossible to reach the BIOS configuration screen. This is not a problem with the boot order: the internal disk is first in the boot order, and in any case, POST is not passed and so booting is not attempted.
    With the iPod disconnected, the PC boots normally, and if the iPod is plugged in later, the iPod and iTunes function normally.
    Solution: either:
    1. Disable "USB legacy mouse support" and "USB keyboard and legacy support" in BIOS. Disabling legacy USB mouse support stops a USB mouse being used by BIOS and DOS programs, which is not usually a problem. Disabling "USB keyboard and legacy support" will prevent a USB keyboard from being used at all, which is a potentially serious problem.
    2. Boot with the iPod disconnected.
    System details: a PC based on the ASUS A7N8X v2.0 motherboard running BIOS version 1008. It has a USB mouse, PS/2-compatible keyboard, and a USB-connected printer and scanner as well as the iPod.
    Comments:
    This is not necessarily a bug with the iPod, but may be. There are three possibilities:
    1. There is a bug with the BIOS implementation of USB keyboard and mouse support
    2. There is a bug with the way the iPod responds when the BIOS is looking for USB keyboards and mice.
    3. There is a bug in the USB spec itself.

  • Nano connects and disconnects

    Hi
    My nano connects ok but after 10 seconds from connecting, it disconnects. I have tried formatting, factory sets and stuff, but no luck. After it disappears from My Computer, it still shows on the itunes, but the songs dont transfer.

    order? in other words have you used your USB port for another USB device with no problem before?
    maybe ( just a guess your USB port is wonky.
    On one of my computers the port on the front doesn't fully work but the ones on the back do work fine.
    suggestions:
    ~ try a different USB port IF you have multiple ports.
    ~try another USB device ( like an external drive or card reader) IF YOU HAVE ONE on the suspect USB port and see if it works.
    ~ re-seat your USB cable --(remove it and plug it in firmly)

  • Ipod Nano Connection Issues

    I am having trouble getting my ipod to connect with my PC.
    It has worked previously, as i have transfered 3gb of songs to my Ipod Nano so far.
    However now when i try to connect my Ipod to my computer, i plug it in, and nothing happens. I can play with my ipod, there is no "Do not Disconnect" symbol appearing.
    However, if i actually bend down the plastic part of the connector side to my ipod, so that it is kind of a 10° angle to my ipod (thus bending the connection isnide my ipod i guess) it reconises it.. Do Not Disconnect appears and it appears on itunes.
    However i dont want to be constantly bending the connector down so that i can transfer songs, beacuse not only is it inconvenient, but it can't be good for my ipod.
    I have no idea why its doing this, I have reset my ipod, re-installed, updated ipod software, tried different ports, i also tried my mates ipod lead to see if it was mine that was faulty. this didnt help, same problem.
    I understand i can send it in for a service, but wasn't sure if this would come under servicable conditions?
    Would appreciate some help that doesn't require sending my ipod away, but if there is no other choice, then i guess ill have to.
    Thanks in advance

    Hey quick question what exactly did you bend to make your ipod sync because im going nuts. I know this question is old but if u solved yuor problem let me know. Contact me at:[email protected]

  • Nano+nike question

    I already have a 4gen 20gig ipod, but want to buy a nano to use for running, and use it with the nike+ gear (once its finally released in canada). i have a few questions...
    a)i'm debating on what size i should get (1g, 2g or 4g)... i plan to only use the nano for working out and keeping the 20g ipod for commuting etc. I have 4.7gigs of music in my itunes library currently, and it grows weekly. what i'm worried about is the amount of space the data from the nike thingy will take up. would i be better to buy the 2 or 4g so i have space for the running data?
    b) can anyone post a site for the key pouches for shoes, that people are using instead of buying a nike+ pair of shoes?
    c) with my one ipod already set up with itunes, i understand you have to add a playlist for an additional ipod. what i'm worried about is when connecting the new nano, will it erase all the music from my itunes library?
    d) has anyone bought the air zoom moire for women? how are they?
    any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

    a) The running data takes up very little space according to this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303933#faq8
    b) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002TQXFK/qid=1153101476/sr=1-2/ref=sr12/104-0867471-4186328?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&v=glance&n=3375251 or try your local sporting goods store
    c) Nothing will be erased.
    d) Can't help you there, as I adapted my own shoes to fit the sensor.
    I'm pretty sure the original nano armband covers the dock connector, but Nike made one especially for the kit: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=B A3295B5&nplm=TJ549LL%2FA

  • Ipod Nano volume question

    Hi,
    I use my nano as a music source on my motorcycle connected to an Autocom intercom. I have found it to be the best think yet for non skip music.
    As I normally wear ear plugs I have always had a problem getting enough volume from other sources. However, with the nano I realise that you can import from itunes with a volume level adjustable up to +100%. I have found that at this import level I only need the volume turned up to about 80% on the nano when on the bike. However, even with AAC tracks I can hear some minor sound distortion.
    My question is would I benefit copying from itunes to the nano at, say +75%, and then have to use more volume on the nano or remain with +100% and use less volume on the nano?
    Or another way of asking is will I get better quality from increasing the volume from an import from itunes at a lower volume or increasing the volume on the nano to max?
    Hope that makes sense!
    Thanks,
    Mark

    I encountered this problem about a week into using it. I restored my iPod to fix the problem.
    Everything was fine for me for about a week, but then at the start of one run, the Nike+ voice tried to say two sentences to me at the same time. I think it was the "Walk around to activate your sensor..." and whatever instruction happens next at the same time. From this point on, all of my songs and Podcasts were less than half the original volume, but the Nike+ voice was full volume. This basically ruined the rest of my workout.
    I suggest trying to reset your iPod to see if this fixes the problem, and if not, then do a restore to your iPod.
    The only bad thing about doing a restore is then your iPod loses all of its workout history, so from that point on your history is only on the Nike+ web site. Too bad iTunes doesn't transfer the workout history back to the iPod...
    Good luck,
    Brian

  • Charging 4th Generation Nano - simple question I htink

    Is it possible to, using the USB connection, charge my nano on any computer ie one that doesn't have iTunes as a programme? Going to be travelling and not able to take laptop
    First using Nano and getting used to it - simple question I know
    Cheers and thanks

    I have a 4th Generation iPod Nano. It is only charged by linking it up to my computer. I have a Bose Sound Dock which charged my old iPod Nano but it does not charge the new one which is very disappointing. I recently purchased a Gear 4 Mains charger that for some reason is not compatible with the Nano and does not charge it. Can you throw any light on this?

  • Database connection question...

    i am using Java 1.5.0_06 and to connect to MySQL database i use Connector/J and the following code:
    try {
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    } catch(java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {
    System.err.print("Main: ClassNotFoundException: ");
    System.err.println(e.getMessage());
    return;
    try {
    con = DriverManager.getConnection(dburl);
    ps = con.prepareStatement(
    I was told i should be using a DataSource to do connection pooling and i have read over the info and downloaded jdbc2_0-stdext.jar and i am using MySQL and windows XP pro.
    the code looks like this
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    DataSource ds = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("jdbc/InventoryDB");
    Connection con = ds.getConnection("myUserName", "myPassword");
    then i just use con as i have already in my code.
    Can someone please point me in the right direction to get this working.
    I read this:
    A systems administrator or someone working in that capacity deploys a DataSource object. Deployment, which involves setting the DataSource object's properties and then registering it with a JNDI naming service, is generally done with a tool. As part of the registration process, the systems administrator will associate the DataSource object with a logical name. This name can be almost anything, usually being a name that describes the data source and that is easy to remember. In the example that follows, the logical name for the data source is InventoryDB . By convention, logical names for DataSource objects are in the subcontext jdbc , so the full logical name in this example is jdbc/InventoryDB .
    i have goggled but can't seem to find out exactly what i need to do next.
    I can't find the "tool" and have to be honest i am lost lol.
    can the The JDBC 2.0 Optional Package work with Java 1.5.0_06?

    i am using Java 1.5.0_06 and to connect to MySQL database i use Connector/J and the following code: i updated it to use manual connection pooling like so:
    final String dburl = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/......";
    Connection con = null;
    try {
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    } catch(java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {
    System.err.print("Main: ClassNotFoundException: ");
    System.err.println(e.getMessage());
    return;
    try {
    DataSource dataSource = setupDataSource(dburl);
    con = dataSource.getConnection();
    con.close();
    public static DataSource setupDataSource(String connectURI) {
    ObjectPool connectionPool = new GenericObjectPool(null);
    ConnectionFactory connectionFactory = new DriverManagerConnectionFactory(connectURI,null);
    PoolableConnectionFactory poolableConnectionFactory = new PoolableConnectionFactory(connectionFactory,connectionPool,null,null,false,true);
    PoolingDataSource dataSource = new PoolingDataSource(connectionPool);
    return dataSource;
    so i compiled and ran it and it worked no problem but my question is that this is a server that does some db work upon starting and then waits for clients like so:
    while (listening)
         new PSMultiServerThread(serverSocket.accept()).start();
    so once i am in PSMultiServerThread what exactly do i need to do?
    i know i don't need to do this again:
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    but do i need to do this again:
    DataSource dataSource = setupDataSource(dburl);
    i geuss i have to to declare the variable lol.
    and do i include this code in the PSMultiServerThread
    public static DataSource setupDataSource(String connectURI) {
    ObjectPool connectionPool = new GenericObjectPool(null);
    ConnectionFactory connectionFactory = new DriverManagerConnectionFactory(connectURI,null);
    PoolableConnectionFactory poolableConnectionFactory = new PoolableConnectionFactory(connectionFactory,connectionPool,null,null,false,true);
    PoolingDataSource dataSource = new PoolingDataSource(connectionPool);
    return dataSource;

  • Multiple DB connection question.

    I have a MDB that currently processes a message and updates a Oracle DB say Database A. Now we want that MDB to check some flags on a different Oracle database instance, say Database B before it updates the Database A.
    Basically, the during the processing of a message the MDB has to access Database A, Database B and Database A again in that order. My question is whatever I am trying to do is reccommended? Since I need connection to Database A again after I do some woek with Database B, can I still keep that connection around or do I have to close that right away?
    I am using wls 8.1.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    JB

    <p>The short answer is that you can keep both connections around at the same time, without any issues. Just be careful with any cleanup where you close connections, and make sure that both get dealt with regardless of any exceptions that might occur.</p>
    <p>But depending on the number of MDBs in your configured pool, it might be a more efficient use of database connections to create a smaller pool of stateless session beans to hold those database connections and expose utility methods for the queries (which could use prepared statements)</p>

  • Nano Connection Problem (1st Gen)

    Hey, everything was going well, then suddenly my iPod nano was no longer recognized by my computer. It is not recognized by iTunes or Windows. When I plug it into my computer USB, nothing happens. It doesnt even start to charge. I have to plug it into my addapter to charge it. I also tried plugging it into a different computer and same thing...not recognized. I followed the 5 Rs and such other steps but nothing helped. Can someone please help? Any option suggestions? (It has been under 1 year since i bought my iPod but i lost me receit )
    Thanks

    Have you tried resetting the Nano will it still connected to your PC running Vista? Didn't the 6G Nano come with it's own cable?  If so, try using that one.  Of course, the iPod Classic sync cable should work just fine, but it's just a bit of troubleshooting, so try it if you can.
    Otherwise, also try shutting down your PC completely, booting it back up, opening iTunes, and then connecting your iPod Nano.  Any luck there?

  • Nano only recognized by iTunes after computer restart(with nano connected)

    My brand new Nano just wouldn't connect to iTunes. I tried various things for about 2 hours. At one point it actually did connect to and sync with iTunes, but iTunes froze when I clicked the "eject ipod" button. From there on I couldn't reconnect to iTunes. After an exhausting amount of uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and following apples suggestions I took my 8gb Nano to an Apple store. They couldn't figure it out either and actually DOAed it.
    Just by chance when we restarted my laptop, the new Nano was already connected so iTunes immediately opened and syncd with it. At that point, both myself and the "Genius" at the Apple bar concluded the first one was just bad and that this one is ok.
    While at home later that day, I had connection issues once again(windows sees it but not iTunes). This is when I figured out that I can ONLY connect to iTunes when I Turn on/Restart my computer while my Nano is connected to the USB port.
    I'm using Windows Xp Home. I have the latest edition of iTunes and the Nano is up to date as well.
    One last note; I used the following page to free up my system from "mostly unneccessary" services.
    http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm
    I might have disabled a service that iTunes/ipod needs running.
    If anyone has had or heard of this problem before or sees a service on that page that might be affecting my computer, please let me know.

    I missed a comment in my previous post. In msconfig I had some services not checked and I turned them all on, including the Portable Media Service number service.
    I just rebooted with that one unchecked and it had no effect.
    So I would recommend having all the services checked in msconfig. One other thing you can do is compare your services list to mine. I'll include some information below. Let me know if you can determine if one of these is the culprit.
    In Program Files>Accessories>System Tools> System Information you can see the running processes and other things. See if these are similar to yours. Hopefully the formatting will be correct here:
