4 questions on export/importing graphics for Web and Photoshop.

Hi, I have 4 questions here, and if you can answer one or more, I'd be happy!! :-)
1. In general, can there be a loss of quality when I export a file from Illustrator CS3 to Photoshop CS3, and then re-import it into Illustrator?
My guess is that you can switch applications with one single file, but you have to know what you're doing (any advise? I'm working with files that contain both text with either illustrated graphics or photos).
2. When I switch applications like that, which one is the final application I should save my final work from (for use in print and web)? Does this matter at all? (Example: I have text created in Illustrator. I export it into Photoshop and add a filter, and maybe a blured-layer of the the whole graphic.)
3. After completing the steps in the example above, and I do re-import it all back into Illustrator, the image appears with horizontal path-like blue lines, that let me slice the photo/text if I wanted to. Why does it do this and how do I get rid of those blue lines?
4. When exporting a file for web, what options are you setting for .gif and .jpg in order to NOT see its white background/frame around graphic?

1. Yes. The artwork will be rasterized to a fixed resolution in Photoshop. When re-imported it may appear the same, but it will have limited resolution on output, whereas Illustrator vector art has no (or infinite) resolution.
2. Depends on the artwork and what the client or printer has requested. If you can keep the text editable in Illustrator (blur and some Photoshop filters are available) then you'll have a more versatile and resolution independent file than you would if you switched to Photoshop. In the end, if the resolution of you art is adequate, it's up to you which is better for you to work with, based on your skills and experience. Keep all working files so you can make changes to artwork imported from one program into another.
Some features you might enjoy: You can place Illustrator files into Photoshop and make them Smart Objects. They remember they are Illustrator files and can be edited in Illustrator at any time. Rotate, scale, or distort the artwork in Photoshop and it is re-rendered a the PSD file's native resolution. In CS3 you can add filters to Smart Objects while keeping the vector data intact.
3. I have read about this, but as I'm not fully up on CS3 and don't have it installed on my main system I can't help.
4. To not see a white background for JPEG use a different matte colour. JPEGs cannot be transparent, so some colour must show where you want transparency. for GIF, the same applies, but you can turn on transparency. The artwork will be transparent, but the matte colour will determine how the anti-aliased edges are rendered. Use a matte colour that's as close to your expected background as possible or choose None. PNG 24 supports 8-bit transparency, which looks best of all, but is not supported by MS Internet Explorer versions 6 or lower.

  • Trying to not save artboard when exporting or using save for web and devices

    Hello,
I am using AI CS5 and I am trying to save a logo that is on an 8.5 x 11 artboard.  When I try to export or 'save for web and devices', I am getting the entire artboard to be saved - not just the logo like I want.  I have never had this issue in CS3, and just started using CS5 so I am not sure if there is a new feature that I need to be turning off to just save the logo instead of the entire 8.5x11 page.
    Any help is appreciated,

  • Strange quality issues when saving for web and devices.

Im a UI designer and spend lots of time working with illustrator and photohop. When I design I normally create vector mockps of my work and then export slices using artboards and save for web and devices. Yesterday Illustrator started having problems exporting files. The files look good on my computer, when viewed with pixel preview mode but when i export they look really bad. here is an example:
This is a screen shot of a part of a mobile app im working on at 100 % and 200 %
here is the same area when exported using "save for web and devices" at 100% and 200%:
as you can see there is a dramatic loss in quality. the icons look almost like a low color gif...
Here is what I have tried already:
I have tried changing the settings in the exporter. I normally use png 24 but I have tried all the different settings and they all do about the same thing. the only one that seems to look ok are swf and svg.
I have copied my files over to photoshop and exported from there. that works fine but it is a pain.
    any help would be great.

  • Exporting animation using Save for Web and Devices problem

The animation plays as it should when the "Play" button is pressed at the bottom of the "Save for Web and Devices" Menu , but when I Preview it the individual frames don't disappear once they've shown , so you can see them all at the end of the animation . This is also how they save as a .gif ( although using the "Save as html" option reverts to looking as it should , each frame appearing and disappearing in turn) How do I save as gif without this happening? Many thanks for any help

  • Save for web and devices: overlaping slices

I use Illustrator to design UI for web and applications. In many cases, there are overlapping slices for example the icons on the toolbar: the icons are separate slices with transparent background while the toolbar is a big slice under all of them. Everytime I need to export the slices, I have to hide the background, export the icons, and then hide the icons and export the background. It may not look like a tedious task but when you have to do this cycle 50 times a day together with your product manager and marketing team to fine tune the graphic design, it's such a painful task. Unfortunately it's not always about hiding and showing only 2 layers, it can be quite complicated depending on how many elements there are on the screen.
The problem only comes down to one question: how to export overlapping slices from different layers easier?

    Window >> Layer comps
Set this up, and with one click you will be able to toggel whci layers are on or off.
Out of curiosity, are you programming pages with CSS, dynamic layers or other? You cannot layer slices with transparency on top of each other in standard html. I find it so time consuming and impossible to get things registering correctly for all browsers, so try to minimize any layering technologies.

  • Errors in Export to PDF for web use - some images are lost when PDF is enlarged & in browser

I have a multi-page PDF in InDesign CS6 that I want to export to view on the web. I need the file to stay under 2MB, and I need it to be crisp and nice enough to read the type on the page (as small as 9pt type).
The errors that are occurring are the following:
On some browsers, some images will entirely not show up. Some of the missing images have been pasted into the document, some placed. I cannot think of a correlation.
When the PDF is enlarged (Adobe Acrobat X 10.1.10) to more than ~200%, there is one placed image that will mostly disappear. What I mean by "mostly" is that little bits of it are still visible, like I masked it carelessly or something. Since this is only occurring with one image it seems that it would be a problem with the image itself, yes? I'm all ears if I'm making a mistake. It is a placed .ai file with no link errors. Should I not be placing directly from illustrator? It renders wonderfully from 100% all the way up to 188%, and then if you enlarge by margins of 1% little bits of it disappear, almost a chunk at a time.
The way I've been exporting is:
File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print)
Adobe PDF Preset: Smallest File Size
    Standard: None
    Compatinility: Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)
Options: Optimize for Fast Web View
Export Layers: Visible & Printable Layers
    Compression
I always change the downsampling from [100/150] to [150/225]. I usually leave the JPG image quality low. I leave both bottom boxes checked (compress text and line art, crop image data to frames)
    Output
    Color Conversion: convert to destination
    Destination: sRGB 1EC61966-2.1
Profile Inclusion Policy: Include Destination Profile
However, after reading a few other forum questions I started trying to export as Acrobat 4 so that it would flatten. When I do that, problem #2 still persists although I didn't test problem #1. I haven't tried using Distiller, and using the "prepare for web publishing" action within Acrobat itself makes the PDF too artifacted.
At the heart of my question is this: I am a young designer at an old company that is not necessarily keeping up with the times. I REALLY want to know what the best, most efficient way to export a pdf for web viewing is. Does this exist in InDesign, outside of InDesign? Does it exist at all? Tell me what I'm doing wrong so that I can get better!
    Thank you in advance.

Show Large Images is a preference inside of Acrobat which might be disabled.

  • Photoshop crashes when saving for web and devices

When hitting saving for web and devices, Photoshop starts to render images but before it's done, it crashes. I get an error-popup with no text and the screen where normally the animation is shown is red. Then Windows comes with a crash report and I can only quit Photoshop.
I have an animation of over 150 frames, but just some black and white lines, no color.
    I'm using Photoshop CS 5.5 on Win7.
I tried deleting the preferences in AppData/Roaming etc, but no result, still crashes.
My Photoshop is also updated to the latest version.
    Help?

  • Save for Web and Devices (Illustrator style?)

Ive used the slice tool to mark out the images for exporting
    from my Fireworks document.
Does Fireworks have a 'Save for Web and Devices' feature like
Illustrator does? I want to have the 4-up display where you can see
the original image and file size in one section and use the others
to vary the JEPG/ GIF settings to get the best combination of file
size and image quality. I want to be able to save different
settings for each slice (as you can do in Illustrator).
I cant find this feature but it seems weird that a web image
optimization program wouldn't have it. I tired opening my file with
Illustrator and Photoshop but the slices wernt imported aswell.
Ive got CS3, is this option in CS4?
    thanks

FW bypasses the extra step used by PS and AI. In the main FW
    window,
choose 4-Up. Select the slice you want to optimize and set
    your
optimization settings via the Optimize panel. Everything bu
    the selected
sliced will be screened back a bit, so you focus on the
    active slice. It
will change on screen as you alter the optimize settings.
If you want to optimize several slices using the same
    settings,
    shift+click to select them.
When you're done, choose File > Export. Make sure to set
    Images Only as
your Export option and in the Slices field choose Export
    Slices. If you
want all slices exported, make sure that Export Selected
    Slices is NOT
    checked.
If you don't want unsliced areas also exported, also make
    sure Include
areas without slices is not checked.

  • Save for Web and Device Grayed menu grayed out

Using Photoshop 11.0.1 (CS4) and Mac OSX 10.5.6), I have an action that saves a retouched file first as a high quality jpg and then as a optimized jpg for the web. It has worked fine in the past, but today when running the action I received a warning that the Export command was not available. I tried manually exporting the using the Save for Web and Devices menu item, but it is grayed out and not available. The file is sized to 1024 pixels on the longest side, no layers and in 8 bit mode.
So far I have done the following:
Trashed the Save for Web preference file
    Repaired permissions
    Scanned for viruses
    Rebooted the system
Any other ideas short of a reinstall?

  • Illustrator CS5 15.0.2 crash when Save for Web and Devices (Mac)

    Hi baffled with this.
When Saving for Web and Devices in Illustrator CS5 (15.0.2), the application now freezes and has to be force quit.
HOWEVER if I delete the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder all works well until I quit the application, then the freeze will happen again. I had this happen before so under the advice of Adobe I created a new user and all was fine for that user so I transferred everything across... a laborious task.
So my question now is why now?... what has triggered this AGAIN?...
    Hope you can help... anyone.
    Running:
    Mac OS X 10.6.6
    Mac Pro tower.
    Note:
    have uninstalled, reinstalled, updated 15.0.1 - 15.0.2
    have deleted all font caches
have deleted everything... that could be related...
HOWEVER have narrowed it down to the 'Adobe Illustrator Prefs' file in the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder
Please too note this is not the folder permissions issue, am aware of that and have thoroughly checked all permissions, ran disk utility and disk warrior.
    thanks

If you use cocktail I suggest you get rid of it it can cause serious problems if you select the wrong settings, instead download ONYXwhich is free and will not harm your system or corrupt anything by deleting something you actually need.
I hit the wrong setting using cocktail and it locked me out of all of the hard drives installed or connected to my Mac it is very dangerous. And I cannot imagine a reason for a setting that would protect your hard drives from yourself to the point of not recognizing your own password.
I know it cost money and has advanced settings but having the ability to kill your system is crazy.
Also to repair your permissions use the disk utility or ONYX as the permissions can become changed when installing software or if cocktail changes it locking you out of folders etc.

  • How to save for web AND overwrite original files with Action?

    Hello,
I want to compress a batch of images with "save for web" using a Photoshop Action, and I also want to preserve my folder structure and overwrite source files. The structure is important because it's complex and needs to be structured this way.
    The Problem:
When I choose "save for web", I must define a destination. What happens is all optimized files from within the structure are saved in a single location.
Here's an example of the folder structure
    Folder A
         - Subfolder A1
         - Subfolder A2
    Folder B
         - Subfolder B1
         - Subfolder B2
              -Subfolder B2.2
    Folder C
         -Subfolder C1
    Summary
Is it possible for me to use a Photoshop Action with "save for web", and overwrite my files without moving them from the structure?

No need to re-invent the wheel.
Just learn how to use the Image Processor, Image Processor Pro, or Dr. Brown's Services 1-2-3 in Photoshop and/or Bridge.

  • Slice and 'saving for web and devices' not saving all images in selected area

Ive designed my site in illustrator and now im using slices and save for web and devices.
When I save a slice as a jpeg or gif it saves the text and but not the background image behind it. I haven't locked the background image and all the content is on the same layer in illustrator so why is it doing this and how can I stop it?
    Thanks
    James

Thanks for your reply.  Yes, my Photoshop CS5 is updated to 12.1.  I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and have tried viewing in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome with no improved success.
I have been reading these forums for about 3 hours trying to find the answer to this question but am still at a loss.  I have found one article here:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7974006/overlapping-image-in-photoshop-splice-how-to-fl oat-with-css
which explains using an "absolute" value in CSS to lock images in place.  I'm currently working in Dreamweaver to see if it's a common error in Photoshop when resizing browser but is easily fixed on the CSS side.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks!

  • Mandatory field Export/Import Procedure for Foreign Trade

    Hello all!
Is there any possibilty to define the field Export/Import Procedure for Foreign Trade
within the infoset as a mandatory field?
Table T162 doesn't show me this field.
    Kind regards,
    Barbara

    Hello,
in customizing under "Materials Management --> Purchasing --> Foreign Trade/Customs --> Control Foreign Trade Data in MM and SD Documents --> Incompleteness Schemas for Foreign Trade Data" you can create an incompletion procedure defininig the documents fields assigning a control type. Then in the subsequent customizing step "Foreign Trade Data in MM and SD Documents" you can assign the Incompleteness schema to each country code, choosing import or export.
    Hope to be useful.
    Best regards,
    Andrea

  • Artwork shifting when exporting or saving for web?

Have been creating some simple icons in Illustrator (CS 5.5), but the artwork is shifting when I try to export. For example, I'll create a 30x30px artboard, draw the icon inside the artboard, end export as a PNG. When I do this, even though the artwork is completely within the bounds of the artboard (no drop shadows or anything like that that would extend outside the artboard), there is some slight clippling that occurs in the exported icon. It's like Illustrator is shifting the artwork to the right and/or down 1 pixel as it exports.  Any ideas what might be happening here?
In the meantime, as a work-around I've just been copying the artwork from Illustrator, pasting it into a 30x30px canvas in Photoshop, pasting the artwork, adn then doing Save for Web. This works fine, but is an extra step that I'd rather not have to do.

    Jacob,
I tried enabling "Use Preview Bounds" as you suggested, but it still showed everything within the artboard. This was as expected since I set the button stroke for inside alignment rather than centered alignment when I created it.
I've attached an image showing the icon in 3 states. The left most image is the icon as it appears in Illustrator shown within the artboard. Actually the artboard was created by clicking on the icon.  When "Use Preview Bounds" was enabled, it lined up perfectly with the artboard lines.  The middle image shows the icon in the Save for Web dialog preview. You can see that it already looks shifted.  The last image on the right shows the exported icon where the right and bottom edges looked cropped.
As I mentioned, if I create a 30x30px canvas in PS, copy the artwork into it, and export using Save for Web for PS, it looks fine.
    Thanks for your help, BTW.

  • When i 'save for web and devices' in illustrator, the resulting jpg is cropped

Has anyone run into this before?  I'm trying to 'save for web and devices" in illustrator, but the resulting jpg doesn't show the whole artboard.  its cropped off some of the top and bottom.  my file is a simple box with text inside.  no other graphical elements of any kind.

Thanks Monika.  I have a 3.25x3" artboard that has just text on it.  I selected "save for web and devices" and the preview window shows the artboard smaller than actual size so some of the text is cut off or pushed to the edge.  I saved it just to see what would happen and the resulting file is just as was with the preview.  I also tried doing a 'save as' for the jpg and same result.  Oddly, I outlined the artboard with a box and the jpg came out fine.  Any ideas?
